We are honored to bring Astronaut Fred Haise to our microphones. From Apollo 13. Not the movie. THE Apollo 13. Astronaut Fred Haise's new book, "Never Panic Early” tells the story of what it's like to find yourself stranded in outer space after your mission to the moon gets scrubbed by an exploding oxygen tank. On today's show, Fred, for the first time, relives his slingshot around the dark side of the moon as he watches newly compiled lunar satellite video that recreates his precise view from the cabin window fifty two years ago. NASA's finest hour wasn't landing a man on the moon and then safely returning him home to planet Earth. It was, instead, a team of dedicated scientists and specialists preventing an emergency from turning into a disaster. Sometimes our finest moment is not what we achieve but what we prevent. The story of Apollo 13 serves as a timeless reminder that there is no substitute for concentrating the mind on what's mission critical. "Don't Panic Early" is not just Fred Haise's story, it's a master's class on keeping your wits about you while all others are losing theirs. Fred wrote the book with Bill Moore who also joins us. We take a sober look at Saturday's massacre of African Americans in Buffalo. The shooting was partly because of white supremacy. But the REAL reason for the shooting is it's too easy for every lunatic in America to get their hands on an assault weapon. Our nation's gun laws are an act of collective suicide. We choose weapons over peace. We prefer profits for arms manufacturers over our own security. From guns to for profit healthcare Americans are killing themselves in the name of Mammon. Is this election, or should it be, the death knell of the concept of “the Latino voter” in the US? Is it time to retire this notion that we can categorize a continent’s worth of people, with very different heritages, very different racial identities, very different economic backgrounds and goals, just because consultants and pollsters like to have one nice, flat line in their demographic breakdowns? Brandon Sutton, host of The Discourse podcast, Brandon how much last night felt like a bit of a backlash vote against the Black Lives matter movement, joins us to discuss Tuesday's election and the state of Bernie Sanders supporters. How much last night felt like a bit of a backlash vote against the Black Lives matter movement, Joe Biden’s looked at that movement and said nah I’m good, I’m gonna denounce these folks and stand over here, while Trump beat up Biden on the movements. And its like what cowards Biden is, oh no they’ll say I’m a socialist, bash socialism, oh no anti-police, bash BLM. At the end of the day they won votes on calling Biden an anti-cop socialist.Dr. Jack Rasmus, author and professor in the Economics and Politics departments at St. Mary's College of California, joins us to discuss the math behind the election process. Also, how come every time they count mail-in ballot dumps they are so devastating in their percentage and power of destruction? Things looked like they were going pretty well for Trump last night, but what is the mathematical paths to victory still open to Biden and Trump.

Howie Hawkins is the Green Party’s candidate in the US presidential race. He joins Steve to discuss not only his platform, but the role of third parties in US politics and, of course, economics. Steve opens the episode by pointing out that he and Howie are in about 90% agreement on all the issues. Howie was the first US candidate to campaign for a Green New Deal ten years ago, in 2010. He ran against Andrew Cuomo for Governor of NY state in 2010, 2014, and 2018. With the suspension of Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, progressives are confronted with the choice of “Dem-enter,” which nobody is excited about, and supporting a third party, which many think of as a wasted vote. Here Howie makes a good case: a strong third party can force the media and other candidates to deal with our demands and confront issues that they’d prefer to avoid. There are historical precedents: the Liberty Party put slavery on the ballot and the Socialist Party brought social insurance programs into the forefront, some of which were adopted in the New Deal. Howie’s gubernatorial run in NY put so much pressure on Cuomo that he was forced to adopt some Green Party positions including a ban on fracking, the $15 minimum wage, and paid family leave. One of Howie’s goals in this campaign is to receive a large enough percentage of the vote to get the Green Party on the ballot line during the next election cycle. This will make it easier for down-ballot Green candidates to run. To seriously compete for national power, it must be built from below. Steve and Howie discuss strategies for breaking through the media blackout, achieving rank-choice voting, and forcing third party candidates into the debates, which was easier to do when debates were sponsored by the League of Women Voters -- before the Commission on Presidential Debates muscled them out. The Commission is not a government agency; it’s a private nonprofit corporation controlled by Democrats and Republicans, so everyone has to play by its rules. The majority of the interview is about combating the climate crisis within the time limit we’re faced with. Steve brings up his recent interview with Steve Keen who says we will need a command economy. Howie counters that we need a democratically planned economy. We already have a command economy with giant corporations that are “private tyrannies.” The people don't have a say in whether we're doing more oil and gas drilling or investing in renewables. Howie proposes a socialist economic democracy which he says we will need in the key sectors if we're to make the rapid transition. It can’t be done with carbon taxes, some mandates, and a few incentives. The incumbent industries will always fight those and keep us tied up. We should take over the utilities and companies like Exxon Mobil and Koch Brothers Industries. Howie outlines a plan that includes maintaining a living wage for workers in that sector. The rest of the interview goes into the need for free or low-cost high-speed internet throughout the country, the historic movement for a job guarantee, and international policy. We suggest that after listening, you check out Howie’s website, howiehawkins.us Howie Hawkins is one of the original Greens who has run on the GP ticket numerous times. He became an activist during the civil rights and anti-war movement of the ‘60s and has been involved in the labor movement for much of his life. @HowieHawkins on Twitter Howie Hawkins 2020 on Facebook

On this edition of Parallax Views, noted activist and organizer Howie Hawkins joins us to discuss his 2020 run for President under the Green Party ticket and what he calls the "life or death issues" facing the United States of America today. Although many have written off the Green Party as a "spoiler" party whose candidates have potentially sabotaged the efforts of the Democratic Presidential Part's Presidential opportunities over the years, Howie makes a passionate case for the importance of Third Party Politics and the Green Party as a force that can push for progressive reforms. Additionally, he notes that a large part of his campaign is about helping to build the base of the Green Party at the local level so that it can grow and prosper in the future. Moreover, Howie offers a number of nuanced, thoughtful takes on issues including policing, the War on Drugs, ecology and environmentalism, military spending, and income inequity that are worth considering and details his involvement in the original Green New Deal. Also discussed, Beto O’Rourke goes off the deep end again, calling America ‘racist to its core,’ and Dan discusses the possible cause and effect of legalized marijuana and increased violent crime in Colorado.

This is the second half of the Black Caucus Presidential Debate in Muncie, IN on September 20th, 2019. The following Green Party Candidates for President were present: David Rolde, Chad Wilson, Dario Hunter, Ian Schlackman, Howie Hawkins and myself. Unfortunately Sedinam Moyowasifza-Curry was not able to attend. I experienced some technical difficulties in the recording so we only have the second half of the debate to present. I made no edits to the content other than to remove pauses in the questions and answers. The first person to speak is Monica Stinson Brown, who was the host and timekeeper for the event. David Rolde answers the first question from the debate. I want to thank the other members of the Green Party Black Caucus who helped to organized and run the event: Trahern Crews and Robin Harris. If there is anyone else I am forgetting who worked to make the event a success, I am sorry and will get you next time. The biggest surprise to come out of the event is that Howie Hawkins is running not only as a Green, but also as a Socialist in New York- a clear violation of the Green Party Presidential Campaign support Committee's rules that all candidates had to sign to participate in the Green Party Presidential campaign. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dennis-lambert0/support

On this episode of The Critical Hour, Dr. Wilmer Leon is joined by Eugene Puryear, the co-host of Sputnik Radio's By Any Means Necessary, to discuss this past Sunday's Unite the Right white nationalist rally that was held in Washington, DC. The Unite the Right 2 rally in Washington, DC, turned out to be an underwhelming dud, with less than 30 supporters showing up. Rally organizer Jason Kessler made some brief remarks, and the demonstration ended up being cut short. A huge police presence was able to successfully keep the ralliers and counter-protesters separated. At one point, a small skirmish broke out between police and counter-protestors who threw bottles and other objects toward officers, but things mostly stayed peaceful. Some alt-right members like David Duke have traded their Klan garb for Brooks Brothers suits. But the question remains: is it still necessary to respond to these groups, or is it best to ignore them? The situation inside Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017 has been a crisis kept silent. Thousands of Puerto Ricans whose homes were destroyed may now lose temporary housing; a death toll that was initially reported at 64 is now over 1,400 and rising; schools are closing; and aid sent to help the citizens that was supposed to be distributed by the National Guard was found rotting and undistributed. Questions are abundant. Who's to blame, and where do we go from here? The US ambassador in London has urged Britain to back President Donald Trump in pulling out of the Iran nuclear agreement, saying a united front is the best way to persuade Tehran to change its course. Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson wrote in the Sunday Telegraph that “we are asking global Britain to use its considerable diplomatic power and influence and join us as we lead a concerted global effort towards a genuinely comprehensive agreement.” Trump pulled out of the deal in May and last week began reinstating economic sanctions against Iran that had been eased in exchange for concessions on Iran's nuclear program. By pulling out, the US is in violation of the agreement, and EU member states could have problems under international law if they follow the US' lead. With rising unemployment and rampant inflation, many Iranians are struggling to survive. We'll find out what's going on on the ground in Iran. GUESTS: Eugene Puryear - Co-host of Sputnik Radio's By Any Means Necessary.Julio Ricardo Varela - Co-host of In the Thick podcast and Founder of Latino Rebels.Rosa Clemente - American community organizer, independent journalist and hip-hop activist. I chat with former U.S. Representative of the State of Georgia and 2008 Green Party Presidential candidate, Cynthia McKinney, about the Russiagate scandal and turning a skeptical eye towards the intelligence agencies claiming that the Russian Federation was behind the hacking of DNC (Democratic National Committee) servers in the summer of 2016. She also breaks down her concept of "Power Cells," a way of governing through direct democracy, as she finds democracy in its representative form to be a relegating force for the citizenry. Lastly, we talk about the Democratic Party and the African-American vote. In a time where the party seems to be switching their focus toward other non-white groups, why are blacks folks so adamant on being loyal to the party?

Her “Healthy People, Healthy Planet” teaching program reveals the links between human health, climate security, and green economic revitalization. This body of work has been presented at government, public health and medical conferences, and has been used to improve public policy. Jill began to advocate for the environment as a human health issue in 1998 when she realized that politicians were simply not acting to protect children from the toxic threats emerging from current science. She offered her services to parents, teachers, community groups and a native Americans group seeking to protect their communities from toxic exposure. Dennis Kucinich and former Independent Presidential candidate Ralph Nader. In each case, none of these candidates have ever appeared in a nationally-televised Presidential debate.  The question of course, is why?  Each is nationally-known to at least a not insignificant number of the American population, but perhaps more importantly, they have each run for the highest office yet only candidates of the two main parties, Democrat and Republican, participate in the debates.   Due to this obvious discrepancy, or rather tragedy in the Democratic process, this evening's s guest is author of the book No Debate:How the Republican and Democratic Parties Secretly Control the Presidential Debates, George Farah (Seven Stories Press),   George is the Executive Director and founder of Open Debates, and is an attorney at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll.
