If the beauty we see or hear or touch enters our minds and memories more powerfully than do ideas expressed in words, isn't it advisable for the teacher to show how the ideas of a culture are embodied in art? What experience does the student have, for example, when he is taught to "read" two very different paintings of the same subject, one from the early Renaissance and one from the time near its end?In this lecture, Dr. Anthony Esolen answered these questions and more as he walked through four great works of art: "The Annunciation" by Fra Angelico, "The Annunciation" by Jacopo Tintoretto, "Magdalene Penitent" by Donatello, and "Magdalene Penitent" by Caravaggio.Originally from northeastern Pennsylvania and the grandson of southern Italian immigrants, Dr. Anthony Esolen received his A.B. in English Literature from Princeton University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Renaissance English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Esolen serves as Distinguished Professor of Humanities at Thales College.

Second volet d'une réflexion sur la peinture organisée aux Beaux-Arts de Paris en 2022, cette table-ronde explore la pratique de la peinture aujourd'hui par un dialogue entre des artistes peintres majeurs de la scène picturale française : Romain Bernini, Ymane Chabi-Gara, Dora Jeridi et Bruno Perramant.   Masques primitifs, plantes exotiques foisonnantes, paysages montagneux crépusculaires, poses corporelles intrigantes, visage borgne, dolmen effondré, tout semble venir d'ailleurs chez Romain Bernini. Mais d'un ailleurs proche, déjà immédiatement présent. Toujours un peu familières et toujours lointaines les figures semblent flotter sur les fonds délavés par une pluie, à la fois épaisse et vaporeuse, huileuse que la lumière perce en zones colorées bleue, verte, orange ou jaune. Une zone indéterminée, un espace pictural qui met le regardeur en attente.   L'isolement, la solitude, le corps en rapport avec le monde et avec la condition d'être social sont les sujets centraux des peintures d'Ymane Chabi-Gara. Elles représentent des individus, seuls ou en groupes restreints, dans des univers et des situations miroirs de leur intériorité. Espaces domestiques et friches industrielles servent de support à la narration, guidée par des impressions formelles et colorées. Ymane Chabi-Gara détermine la structure de la composition par un dessin minutieusement détaillé. À partir de ces trames, l'expérience de la peinture pour elle-même ouvre des possibilités sensibles. Le corps lui sert de point de convergence vers lequel toute l'expérience tend et trouve du sens. Le corps des autres mais aussi, depuis peu, son propre corps. Cette mise en scène d'elle-même aborde à la fois la singularité de l'intime et la solitude comme sentiment archaïque et universel.   La peinture de Dora Jeridi est intense, énergique et expressive. Elle témoigne d'un désir fort vis-à-vis de la matière et d'un rapport gourmand, parfois vorace, à la peinture. En représentant des situations où apparaît souvent une narrativité énigmatique, il s'agit pour l'artiste de montrer un état de crise qui ne peut se dire, un monde non-dit et silencieux, quoique avide d'expression. Tantôt onirique, tantôt cauchemardesque, parfois violent, son travail manifeste une tension irréductible entre déferlement chaotique et quête de la grâce.   Bruno Perramant sur sa peinture : « Il ne faut jamais oublier à quel point je suis chaque jour confronté, à une seule et même tâche. Peindre des tableaux. La confrontation permanente avec la matière éloigne l'expérience mystique. Mais vous avez raison sur un point, les tableaux doivent être médités, vécus, leur visibilité n'est pas toujours immédiate. Je ne réfute pas cette approche, j'étais récemment à Cortone pour voir l'Annonciation de L'Angelico, comme à chaque fois, c'est un éblouissement magistral. L'ambition de Fra Angelico est hors norme et elle réussit toujours, aussi bien dans les fresques individuelles des chambres monastiques de San Marco que dans les grandes peintures à l'huile.
