Around $445,000 from the hotel/motel tax was distributed among the visitors bureau, Marietta Welcome Center lease, and city staff marketing allocation. The surveys, led by Dr. Bob Sargent of the state Department of Natural Resources, revealed average to above-average nesting success in the surveyed areas. This is particularly significant considering the impact of avian influenza on bald eagles and other bird species nationwide. The recovery of bald eagles in Georgia is considered a conservation success story, but the species is still listed as threatened in the state. The survey recorded 198 nest territories, with 150 being successful and 232 eagles fledged. These findings indicate that Georgia has maintained over 200 nest territories annually since 2015, with an increasing number of eagles nesting. The surveys are conducted by helicopter twice a year in different sections of the state, with the coast being surveyed annually. The positive results provide reassurance, especially regarding the coast, which experienced a significant decline in nest success rates due to avian influenza. Story 8: Hodges Grayson Hodges, a linebacker from North Cobb High School, has committed to playing college football at the Air Force Academy. The 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker chose the Falcons, impressed by their 10-3 record from last season. Hodges expressed his excitement about the opportunity to play for a Division I university and described it as a dream come true. His decision was influenced by the family-oriented and authentic conversations he had with the Air Force coaches, particularly inside linebackers coach Ken Lamendola. Hodges believes he will fit well in the Falcons' defensive scheme, which allows linebackers to roam and make tackles in open space. He aims to continue improving and hopes to achieve postseason success with his high school team. Story 9: golf The Mount Paran Christian boys golf team dominated the 2023 season and secured the Class AA state championship. They shot a team total of 290, finishing 34 strokes ahead of the runner-up. Coach Scott Varner praised the team's preparation and mental understanding of the game. He emphasized the importance of managing the golf course, capitalizing on opportunities, and maintaining a team mindset. The victory marked the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance. Varner was recognized as the Cobb County Boys Golf Coach of the Year, but he humbly credited the success to his players and their dedication. Chris Trent is the Next Gen Catalyst on our Church Strengthening team. He served as a student pastor in churches in Texas and Georgia, most recently as student pastor at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church for 14 years. Jenni Carter is a Statewide Next Gen Consultant on our Church Strengthening team focusing on helping churches in Kids Ministry. She has served for over 10 years with the GBMB and is nationally recognized for her efforts in VBS training and for seeing thousands of children come to faith in Christ through VBS. Gen Z (born years 1997-2013) is easy to focus on the negative things society says about this generation. But on this broadcast, the team has a conversation on leveraging relational authority in the lives of this generation to see God using them in the local church. The team discusses: Why relational authority with Gen Z is different than ever before. How can church leaders disciple a child if their parent can't (or won't) be the spiritual leader in the home? What's one of the first things we can do to begin the discipleship process for kids?
Buford came into Friday's game with a perfect record, ranked No. 1 in the state and a consensus top-10 team nationally, and winner of three straight state championships. Walton was not intimidated. The Raiders prepared this week as if Buford was just another opponent and left Tom Riden Stadium with a 42-35 victory in the second round of the Class AAAAAAA state playoffs. The win sent shockwaves far beyond the Buford and Walton communities — but not as much on the Raiders' sideline. Walton will return to the road for the quarterfinals next week, facing another unbeaten foe in Carrollton. Of Buford's 11 wins this season, eight of them were decided by more than 20 points, but that did not faze Walton's will to play spoiler. Walton will play Friday night on the road against Carrollton. About half a dozen local families that grew a little larger this year via adoption celebrated the milestone Saturday at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. The event was hosted by the Cobb County office of the Division of Family and Children Services, the state organization that provides child protective services, foster care and adoption. Along with a breakfast of chicken and waffles, Cobb DFCS provided photographers for the families to take Thanksgiving portraits, and gave each family a $25 Walmart gift card to have the photos printed. Deputy Director of Cobb DFCS Carmen Nance organized the event to honor adopting families. She said Cobb has 436 children in foster care. According to Nance, the county's foster system needs community support — more foster families, and more resources for those families. Nance said it is important for children in foster care to stay within their home community if possible, so they can maintain some of their social network through friends, school, and church. Nance said the Cobb County Foster Adoptive Parent Association is a good resource for those looking to foster, adopt, or support the local foster system. MUST Ministries is expecting 10,000 runners this Thanksgiving Day as the nonprofit celebrates 20 years of racing against poverty with the MDJ Gobble Jog. Since 2002, families from all over the world have come together on Marietta Square to run in the Marietta Daily Journal MUST Ministries Gobble Jog, one of the largest Thanksgiving Day races in the Southeast. The annual event raises funds for those in need who come to MUST for housing, food, job assistance, clothing and more. This year, MUST will help more than 60,000 people across eight metro Atlanta counties find a second chance at hope. Runners and walkers choose between a 10K, 5K, 1K, Tot Trot (50 yards) or being a phantom runner. For more information, visit gobblejog.org or mustministries.org. The Mount Paran Christian cheerleading team recently won its 11th straight state championship in competition cheer held at the Macon Centreplex. The team faced not only a new competitive class when the Eagles moved up to Class AA, but also extended its streak with a new coaching staff led by McKenzie Rutan, Shelley Ray, and Nikki Hamilton. To date, the squad is the only team in Georgia, in any classification, to have won 11 consecutive cheer titles. The streak began with the 2012-13 season. Competition cheerleading is acknowledged as an Olympic sport and has been recognized by the GHSA/NCAA for more than 25 years. The cheer squad holds the most consecutive state championships for any sport in Cobb County, and is closing in on the Walton girls tennis team's mark of 13 titles in 14 years, and 16 championships in 18 years, between 2001 and 2018. This 11th consecutive title also puts the competition cheer team second in most consecutive titles in the state in any sport behind Jefferson High School wrestling, which won every year from 2001 to 2019. Five interceptions and a lost fumble led to five Rockmart touchdowns in North Cobb Christian's 63-10 loss at Rockmart in the second round of the Class AA state playoffs Friday night. Coming off of a thrilling 14-6 win in the first round, No. 10 North Cobb Christian (10-2) was hit with costly mistakes on offense against the Number 7-ranked Yellow Jackets to lead to an early exit in the playoffs. The Eagles went into halftime down 28-10 after getting some traction on a nine-play, 76-yard scoring drive late in the second quarter that ended with quarterback Matty Go finding Skyler Parker down the left sideline for an 18-yard touchdown pass. When they came back from the break, that momentum deteriorated quickly. Rockmart scored on the first possession of the second half as Cam Ferguson capped an 8-play, 70-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown run. Ty'Shawn Johnson intercepted Go two plays into North Cobb Christian's possession, leading to a short field and a 15-yard touchdown run by Rockmart quarterback JD Davis a short time later. Go finished 9-of-16 for 114 yards, all of which came in the first half as the senior was 0-for-4 in the second half, each time getting picked off. The Eagles were held to 75 yards rushing for a total of 189 yards of offense. Rockmart, meanwhile, had 304 yards with 291 coming on the ground. Davis and Ferguson each had two touchdowns while Brent Washington scored two touchdowns, one on a 2-yard run and another on a 60-yard interception return, both in the second quarter. Marietta used bookstore Book Nook will close, according to a letter written by the store's owners. Before shuttering, the Marietta Book Nook on Roswell Road is discounting nearly everything in its stock by 50% every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the rest of November. The store will not be open on other days. The letter does not specify an end date for the sale or an ultimate closing date. Trade credits will still be accepted at the other Book Nook locations in Decatur and Lilburn. Some items are exempt from the 50% off discount: comics, graphic novels, and premium items, which will be identified by a star sticker. Everything else is half off. The Book Nook had been temporarily closed to customers for about a month because of a change in management, according to the store's manager, Alexa Dunford. Dunford was not sure what caused the change. During that time, staff have been reorganizing the shelves to prepare for the sale. The book store has been a staple of Marietta's used book market since 1973. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. In today's podcast, William Vanderbloemen talks with Bryant Wright, Author, and former pastor of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. After decades of serving at his church, we got the privilege to help Bryant carry out a succession plan. This conversation and his latest book capture that journey. We hope you enjoy this conversation! https://www.vanderbloemen.com/blog/preparing-for-next-leader-succession-podcast
Clay Smith took over Johnson Ferry Baptist Church just before the pandemic hit. He was 40 at the time, following a leader who planted the church and had been there since he was 2. Now 43, Clay looks back and shares some of the lessons he's learned about following a legacy leader. “First, you are an interim,” he says, “We are all coming and going.” That is, you might be at your church for 3 months, for 3 years, or for 30 like Clay's predecessor… but your job is temporary. That said, Clay highlights five lessons he's learned— and is still learning. “We're all learning,” he reminds us.
Dr. Wright is an author, national speaker and one of the most respected leaders in Southern Baptist life. He served as senior pastor of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, Georgia for 38 years. He served as president of the Southern Baptist Convention from June 2010 to June 2012. Bryant founded Right From the Heart Ministries, radio program reaching thousands of people world-wide. And currently serves as President of Send Relief for IMB. Chris Trent, served as student pastor in churches in Texas and Georgia, most recently as student pastor at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church for the past 14 years. Chris is an author, Consider This: A Youth Minister's Guide to Longevity. Chris is the NEXT GEN Catalyst on our Church Strengthening team, an illusionist and master of all things Disney. Bryant shares • the keys to success over his four decades of ministry and rhythms that can help all leaders • wisdom from his new book Succession for all leaders looking to retire or leave a ministry well • the importance of a sabbath and guidance on asking your church for a sabbatical • gives specific details on guardrails he had/has in his life to help him stay morally faithful • why it is imperative for a pastor to build relationships with unbelievers in the community • why we are not seeing more young people surrender to ministry and what leaders can do Chris shares • keys to success from the second chair leader • there was never any confusion about what mattered most at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church • mission clarity precedes mission success • new initiative “called to ministry” initiative at the Georgia Baptist Mission Board in the Next Gen ministry to raise awareness and call out the called • what he hopes to know for when his ministry is completed Scott shares • people don't walk in straight lines unless they are focused on a target. If a person is dropped off in the desert and they have to walk their way out, they will almost certainly walk in circles (leg length discrepancy). • people remember a little of what you say and a lot of how you make them feel • challenges leaders to consider: when the tide rises, all the boats in the bay rise with it, so lead well and don't give up

The Wayward Child The story of the wayward child is no stranger to virtually every parent today. Just about everyone you talk to either knows or has a son or daughter who has struggled with something. That could be behavior, attitude, or a combination of both. Addiction, self-harm, and even suicide are all incidents that are growing at an alarming rate among young people today. But yet, our standard of living is at an all-time high. It's also no secret that many parents don't know what to do, and it's no wonder! The myriad of things that can cause a child to stumble and fall away are ever-growing and enticing. We often see parents doing everything they can to keep their kids smiling. But is this the end-all? Where can parents turn and what can they do when they just feel like giving up? Discussing the Prodigal with Fair & John Brocard Fair is a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and a graduate of Furman University with a BA degree in Early Childhood Education. Following graduation, and after teaching kindergarten, she raised her three children. She then worked in the children's ministry at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Metro Atlanta for 6 years. He received his law degree from the Potomac School of Law in 1978 and has been in active practice of law since 1980. Incidentally, he specializes in juvenile and adult criminal defense and significant personal injury cases.
