In Episode 65, Bill Cohen returns to the show to discuss current trends in the prevalence of dementia in our society and factors that contribute to developing dementia, including environmental conditions, lifestyle choices, and genetics. With the increase of dementia cases each year and the new national attention on dementia from celebrities who are now being diagnosed, it is time that we have more candid conversations about this disease, how to prevent it, and what to do if we or a loved one could potentially develop dementia. In this episode, we discuss preventative strategies as well as preparation strategies in case a loved one is eventually diagnosed with dementia. Our conversation then navigates through the challenges of caregiving, the need for caregiver support, and the use of elder mediation in complicated situations. After “retiring” from state employment and entering his “encore career” seven years ago, Bill is a caregiver support group and memory café leader, a podcast guest, a speaker, a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA)®, a trained elder mediator, and a caregiving support consultant. He has completed several caregiving courses through the Alzheimer's Association and the Society for Certified Senior Advisors (CSA)®, and earned business degrees from Boston and Portland State Universities. Bill Cohen's loving and talented mother, Sheila, lost her home to Hurricane Katrina. Then, she lost her health, ability to create beautiful art, and, ultimately, her life due to Alzheimer's. For almost 10 years, Bill was her primary caregiver and advocate, not just her son. He turned his personal loss into his passion for supporting other caregivers. Bill is a native New Englander and has lived in the Portland, Oregon area for almost 40 years with his wife and supporter, Lori. Resources from This Interview: 1. Bill Cohen recently received the "Male Caregiving Voice of the Year" award. You may understand why he was selected when you listen to his caregiving story in this episode and how caregiving unveiled a new purpose, which is now providing him with an encore career. Bill was his mother's caregiver after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005 and took away her home. First, he stepped in as her long-distance caregiver. Then, when she moved closer to Bill in the Pacific Northwest, he became her primary caregiver, juggling caregiving with his work commitments. Bill's mother had Alzheimer's disease, and Bill found helpful resources along the way through the Alzheimer's Association, which led to him attending a support group. As time progressed, he became the support group's facilitator, which led to hosting memory cafes and learning more helpful resources, which he now shares with other caregivers. Bill owns Cohen Caregiving Support Consultants LLC and is a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA)®, caregiving support consultant, elder mediator, volunteer, and advocate for a cure for Alzheimer's disease. He helps folks manage their caregiving journeys with their care partners living with dementia. He speaks to organizations and meetings and facilitates caregiving support groups in person or virtually.

Episode Guest: Raines Cohen, community organizer and co-housing coachEpisode Description: The stereotypical modern ideal of independent solo living and aging is really a new modern experiment that doesn't work well for many people. We can achieve greater independence through interdependence if we're willing to engage with neighbors or housemates to take care of one another. That's what aging in community is all about. Many structures and ways help people preserve their privacy while they share, such as setting clear limits and building relationships over time. Having a deeper shared purpose or value can support deeper relationships and caring, more than just housemates or places to live. You can get more of what you want or need in a community living arrangement by starting with a clear list of your own priorities, but instead of treating it as a list of demands, use it as a guide to your listening, and then prioritize.About Raines Cohen:Raines Cohen, CSA, CLIPP, is a community organizer pioneering the field of Aging in Community. As a Cohousing Coach, he works to help people find and co-create sustainable communities, cohousing neighborhoods, EcoVillages, and all forms of cooperative shared living that blend privacy and community. He has visited over 125 North American cohousing neighborhoods, lived in two, and served as a Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) Ambassador. As a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA), he loves to connect life planners and folks serving elders with new options for their clients. As a Certified Living in Place Professional (CLIPP), he looks for ways to help folks feel safer and more secure in their existing homes as they age and evolve to incorporate new neighbors and housemates. He wrote the Aging in Community chapter in the book Audacious Aging, was a founding member of Elders Action Network (EAN), and serves on the boards of Sage-ing International and Gray Panthers of the Berkeley/East Bay Area. He lives with his wife, Betsy Morris, at Berkeley (California) Cohousing.Get in touch with Raines Cohen:Raines' Handout: Download his chapter called "Aging in Community" in the book, Audcacious Aging https://www.agingincommunity.com/RevolutionizeRetirement/ Raines' website: https://www.agingincommunity.com/ Purchase the book, Audacious Aging: Eldership as a Revolutionary Endeavor: https://revolutionizeretirement.com/audacious Grab our free guide, 10 Key Issues to Consider as You Explore Your Retirement Transition, at https://10keyretirementissues.com/

His new bestseller, Build a Life, Not a Portfolio aims to reinvent the role money plays in people’s lives and provides a new perspective, thus helping people put themselves first. For decades, the popular notion for most Americans has been to work hard endlessly early in life so one can enjoy financial security later in life. Working with this approach, many people lose their work/life balance and fail to enjoy the years of their life that matter the most. John doesn’t agree with this lifestyle.

How do you care for an aging family member? What if the family member does not think they need help or is suffering from a disease like dementia or Alzheimer’s? Statistics show that Americans are living longer and with diseases like Alzheimer’s on the rise, more of the American population will need care. On the show today is Bill Cohen, a caregiving support consultant, who provides us with some great information and perspective on the aging community and how best to care for them. He is on Clear Choices to discuss not only the choices that he made to become a consultant later in his life but also the choices that his clients have to make in regards to caring for their aging family members. Bill is originally from New England but has lived in Oregon for thirty years with his wife and several pets. He has done a lot in his life from being a financial advisor to working for the DMV. His common thread has always been helping people. His life goal and milestones have been delivering value to others. What brought him to his most current role as a caregiver consultant is what he experienced when he took care of his mother whose life was ultimately taken by Alzheimer’s. From then on, he committed himself to providing the help and support he needed, but didn’t have, when caring for his aging mother. He became a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) and now provides guidance, advice, and support for caregivers and their aging family members. "It’s so much better to prepare, be proactive and plan in advance. One of the things I like to say is that if you are thinking that it is time for mom, dad, or whoever, to be getting additional care, it is time. That’s the time to start planning.” In this episode, you will hear: - How Bill helps people as a caregiver consultant - A list of things to consider if you have an aging family member - How Bill guides clients through difficult choices Thank you so much for listening! Fritzi Gros-Daillon will talk about how we can age at home. One of the toughest things to decide about after retirement is where to stay. You can listen to the show at: http://rockyourretirement.libsyn.com/how-to-age-at-home Age at Home: Fritzi Gros-Daillon knows how to do it. She is a former senior move manager and has worked with 1000 families while being a long-distance caregiver for her parents in California. Fritzi founded Household Guardians in 2013 as an age at home consulting firm. Her passion for keeping family members safe in their own home environment for as long as possible has grown from years watching family's struggle to make the best decisions. Her environmental business background, certification as a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) and years of experience bring a combination of expertise and perspective to the current aging in place issues. Her book, “Grace and Grit: Insights to Real Life Challenges of Aging for Adult Children and their Parents,”, has won three national awards since publication in June 2014. Fritzi's interview on how to age at home was jam-packed full of information, so I was furiously writing it down. Some great information she gave us: * There are Toilet Paper Holders that can be used as balance bars. They can support 250 pounds of weight and look great. * Call them BALANCE bars, not grab bars. Our aging population doesn’t like these old sounding words. * Easy things to do related to lighting: * LED lighting on railings help. * Toe kicks can help. * Motion sensor lights help to raise our consciousness. * Motion sensor lights help us see where to put our feet and help reduce falls. * Add railings to hallways above the wainscoting. * Look ahead 6 months to see what needs to be done. * Smart soles are shoe inserts that work with an alert system. * Change lighting to reduce glare. * Cover or remove mirrors and reflective surfaces. * Remove family photos and replace them with pictures of flowers and landscaping. * Remove busy patterns on walls floors and furniture. * Use color to differentiate items such as plastic glasses and plates. * Be conscious of odors and sharp sounds. Use lavender, not rosemary. * Install soft background music. These are just a few items. She has a 240 point assessment that she does to help you age at home. What do you think people should know BEFORE they retire? An assessment of your home can give you ideas for now and the future; It can increase the “visibility” of your home for all family members. What if someone is “stuck in their retirement? Stay engaged. Find a place to volunteer or learn a new skill. The experts are looking at this next generation of retirees to provide $2 Trillion of value in expertise to the national economy through volunteering and mentoring..it is a part of the national conversation.
