This episode is about sensory strategies for speech therapy sessions. It opens with an acknowledgement that OTs are the primary sensory experts, and offers resources for reviewing sensory basics. The episode then discusses the difference between being “sensory-defensive” and “sensory-seeking,” reviews the sensory system, and then moves into a discussion of strategies to support students with sensory differences or a diagnosis of sensory processing disorder. These strategies come from SLP and researcher Celeste Roseberry-McKibbin. The first strategy is addressing students' physical comfort, the second strategy is including movement in speech therapy sessions, and the third strategy is supporting students during transition times. The episode then discusses the connections between interoception and emotions, and offers three strategies to help students begin to notice and understand these connections in their own bodies. These strategies come from occupational therapist Kelly Mahler, and they are objective labeling, “I wonder” statements, and descriptive language.

Join Julie and Ginger in speaking to Occupational Therapist, Kelly Mahler about Interoception and the body-mind disconnect. Kelly teaches that as caregivers and educators, we should be curious without expectation of a response from the children we work with. She also explains that we all have different internal experiences; our first step is to believe others and their experiences. Kelly tells us that before we start working on helping and healing the body-mind connection, we really need to work towards a place of regulation and help that person feel safe in their body and environment. Interoception is having a moment. The popularity of the 8th sense is likely due to the fact that it gives words to sensations that we all experience, like: hunger, fatigue, heart rate, and pain. But, even though these sensations seem universal the reality is that there are vast differences in how and to what degree we experience the components of interoception. We are beginning to be able to correlate brain-level differences with different experiences of interoception. And, what's really interesting is how these differences impact emotional regulation. And, what's really, really interesting is that research is showing that interoception can be improved. And, there seems to be a correlation improvement with emotional regulation….(without ever working explicitly on emotional regulation.)In this 1 hour CEU course, we'll look at a school based program that does just that: improves interoception and emotional regulation. After we review the article, we'll welcome to the podcast Kelly Mahler, the lead author of the paper and one of the pioneers of researching the practical implication of interoception for OTs and other health professionals.Learn more about our guest:https://otpotential.com/occupational-therapy-directory/kelly-mahlerYou can find more details on this course here:https://otpotential.com/ceu-podcast-courses/ot-and-interoceptionHere's the primary research we are discussing:An interoception- based intervention for improving emotional regulation in children in a special education classroom: Feasibility study.Support the Show.

Following on from our delve into what emotion regulation really is (see our previous episode), Patricia and Sammy discuss some key strategies to use when supporting children, as a parent, teacher or anyone who works closely with children. We explore interoception further and discover ways we can support our children in strengthening this sense (check out Kelly Mahler's free resources here). This is vital understanding as it links so closely to so many of our neurodivergent people's struggles! We then discuss other strategies and frameworks we can use to support our children's understanding of their emotions (read: our understanding of their behaviours), such as HALT and Phoenix Cups (for more information and to find out your needs profile, check out the Phoenix Cups website here). All underpinned by psychological safety, which we discuss also. Text Dr. Lenz any feedback or questions In this podcast episode, Dr. Michael Lenz introduces Kelly Mahler, an occupational therapist who discusses the often overlooked aspect of our sensory experiences: interoception. Kelly explains interoception as the body's ability to perceive its internal state, which affects emotions, hunger, pain, and more. She shares insights into how recognizing and fostering interoception can improve life quality, reduce distress, and aid in managing chronic conditions like fibromyalgia. The conversation also covers the challenges of those with interoceptive differences, particularly in the neurodivergent community, and the importance of personalized approaches to therapy. Kelly and Dr. Lenz also touch on the scientific backing of interoception and its relevance in both understanding oneself and navigating healthcare interactions more effectively.00:00 Welcome to the Podcast: Introducing Occupational Therapy and Interoception00:47 Meet the Host: Dr. Michael Lens's Background and Disclaimer01:13 Introducing Kelly Mahler: The Occupational Therapist's Journey01:33 Understanding Occupational Therapy and Sensory Processing02:44 Diving Deep into Our Senses: Beyond the Basic Five04:34 Exploring Interoception: The Internal Sense05:08 Kelly's Personal and Professional Discovery of Interoception05:57 The Impact of Interoception Differences on Daily Life13:39 Investigating the Causes of Interoception Differences16:39 The Real-life Consequences of Interoception Differences22:12 Improving Interoception: Strategies and Mindfulness25:04 Raising Interoception Awareness: Education and Advocacy31:27 Final Thoughts and Resources for Interoception Support the Show.A Fibromyalgia Starter Pack, which is a great companion to the book Conquering Your Fibromyalgia, is now available. Hello everyone and welcome back to Voices of Your Village. I get to hang out with Victoria Facelli. She's an IBCLC, is a graduate of the Global Breastfeeding Institute's Lactation Program, and not the kind of lactation consultant who hates formula, which I'm super jazzed about. Right in the intro she said, "this is a book about feeding babies, nothing more, nothing less. It's easy in the early days of parenthood to confuse feeding with parenting." And I love that because I think it's so true and there's so much tied to it. I think we see it with birth and we see it with feeding. And your book that we were just referencing, Feed the Baby: An Inclusive Guide to Nursing, Bottle-Feeding, and Everything In Between, gives families more tools to really be able to navigate this consciously and intentionally. You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and I get to dive in with occupational therapist Kelly Mahler about interoception, which, I would say, is the key to navigating life from a well -being standpoint. Interoception is one of the sensory systems that I think is so often overlooked, and I think it's the cornerstone for mental wellness. It definitely is the cornerstone for accessing self -control. So often we want kids to control their words, control their actions, like, ask for things kindly, all that jazz, and the reality is they can't do that if they don't first have interoceptive awareness, if they aren't aware of what's happening inside their bodies. Kelly is a rad OT who works in this space. I got to pick her brain, and I am so jazzed to bring this to you because I think it also is huge for burnout and overwhelm and that exhaustion that we're often feeling in parenthood and in education. I think this is truly going to be a huge part of the conversation for so much of mental wellness in the next few years. All right, folks, let's dive in. Does your child ever seem disconnected to their body? Maybe they would completely forget to eat if you didn't remind them because they never experience hunger, or they can play outdoors for hours in freezing weather but because they're not really noticing how cold it is, they leave the hat, gloves, and coat at home. Or on the flip side, maybe your child is intensely connected? Maybe they experience such strong internal or external body sensations that it is hard for them to pay attention to anything else or it spikes their anxiety or triggers them into fight or flight mode? These are just a few examples of extremes and variances in interoception awareness, which is essentially the language of our bodies. And for most neurodivergent kids, interoception is a factor in their ability to hear or feel, pay attention, and ultimately respond to the messages their bodies are sending them at any given time. I wanted to explore this concept of interoception and differently wired kids more deeply for the show, so I reached out to Kelly Mahler, an occupational therapist who specializes in interoception and is a co-principal investigator in several research projects pertaining to topics such as interoception, self-regulation, trauma, and autism. Kelly answered my big questions about interoception, including how it relates to sensory processing differences or SPD, why it's essential that we help our children get to know their bodies' unique language, and the relationship between ADHD, autism, and interoception. We also talked about what happens in our kids' brains when they increase their interoceptive awareness, and effective strategies for helping our kids develop in this area. Kelly Mahler is an occupational therapist who specializes in interoception, and I was so happy to have recorded this interview with her. Kelly sheds light on how interoception, the awareness of our internal body signals, significantly impacts children's (and adults'!) emotional well-being. Discover how interoception is distinct from other sensory processes and how it influences so many aspects of daily life, including emotional regulation. We chat about the role of mindfulness practices in enhancing children's self-awareness by making them more attuned to their body's signals. We also explore the use of interoception in toilet training, a crucial skill for kids' independence and development. This episode offers a profound perspective on emotions as informative rather than "good" or "bad" and provides valuable resources for parents and professionals interested in delving deeper into interoception. In this episode we dive into interoception, our ability to understand the messages we are getting from inside our bodies. Our guest, Kelly Mahler, makes the connection between interoception and truly neurodiversity-affirming therapy practices. Kelly Mahler presents internationally on interoception and has authored 12 resources, including The Interoception Curriculum. This episode covers how a deeper understanding of interoception can help us support authentic self-regulation for our autistic clients.
Interoception is a relatively new concept as it pertains to the experiences of autistic children and adults. Described as the eighth sense, it has to do with being able to understand and interpret sensations that come from one's own body. There is increasing evidence that problems related to interoception are common in autism, and are related to capacities in the development of self-regulation. In this episode, Kelly Mahler, an OT and a leader in bringing awareness of interception to autism, and Chloe Rothschild, an autistic woman, discuss the implications of interoception for supporting and understanding the experiences of autistic people.

In this episode, we're exploring the concept of interoception, and how it impacts both physical and mental well-being. Interoception can be defined as one sense of their internal state of the body. This is a full-body sensory experience that has both a conscious as well as a subconscious or semi-conscious layer to it. As practitioners, we're able to train the sense just as we would train balance or proprioception. Interoception includes the brain's processing of signals relayed up from the body into specific sub-regions of the brain, such as the brainstem, the insula and the somatosensory cortex. This felt a sense of our body, its organs, and all of our physiologic processes allow for specific, as well as subtle or nuanced representation of our emotional and physical state. Interoception is important for maintaining homeostasis in the body. It improves one's self-awareness or body awareness. It's a critical component of mindfulness training, especially when you're working with body-based conditions, such as reversing chronic pain or releasing trauma. Both have important ties to interoceptive processing. Training interoception, which we can also term as this eighth sense, is often left out of both physical and mental health treatment for chronic pain. Joining us to speak about interoception is Occupational Therapist Kelly Mahler. She an Occupational Therapist, serving school-aged children and adults and is a winner of multiple awards, including the 2020 American Occupational Therapy Association Emerging & Innovative Practice Award. Kelly is a principal investigator in several research projects pertaining to interoception, self-regulation, trauma, and autism. In this episode, we'll further define interoception, how it can be used in clinical practice and how interoception has an influence on chronic pain and other chronic disease conditions. Without further ado, let's learn about this eighth sense of interception and let's meet Dr. Kelly Mahler. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Our body is a screen onto which our inner experiences are frequently projected. Authors, through their writings, vividly illustrate the imprint of the mind onto the body; for example, Caroline Hanson says “Nervousness made her feel nauseous, almost like she had two hearts frantically beating in her chest, instead of one.” The human interoception system processes the internal sensations and let's us feel what is happening in our bodies and through body-regulation we can strengthen our Executive Function by self-regulating our thoughts, behaviors, and actions without the sense of being overwhelmed. If loving oneself is the greatest revolution, then the body is its frontline fighter! On this episode, award winning occupational therapist, author, and faculty at Elizabethtown College, Dr. Kelly Mahler discusses how to understand the signals from our body and how cultivating the abilities to know the meaning behind these signals is the key to live a healthy life.Dr. Kelly MahlerKelly Mahler OTD, OTR/L, earned a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Misericordia University, Dallas, PA.
