In this Episode Julie and Ginger teach about the PolyVagal Theory and introduce us to Our PolyVagal World a new book by Dr. Stephen Porges and his son Seth Porges. Link to the book: https://www.amazon.com/Our-Polyvagal-World-Safety-Trauma/dp/1324030259 How safe we feel is crucial to our physical and mental health and happiness. When we feel safe our nervous system and entire body undergo a massive physiological shift that primes us to be healthier, happier, and smarter, to be better learners and problem solvers: to have more fun; to heal fast, and generally to feel more alive. It is in this safe state that we can learn. When we feel safe we feel a sense of connection to ourselves and others. We are born wired to connect but when trauma enters the picture it rewires us and we feel disconnected from people, society, and our own bodies. The impact of trauma stretches through our brain and nervous system through every part of our body changing our physical and mental health. Joined with producer/director Seth Porges (How To Rob A Bank, Class Action Park) our heroes discuss one of the best made action films of the 1990s.
On this week's episode, I'm joined by Stephen Robert Morse and Seth Porges, the producers and directors of How to Rob a Bank. Streaming now on Netflix, the true-crime doc's subject, Scott Scurlock (aka, the Hollywood Bandit), calls to mind Point Break in his commitment to living his life however he pleased and funding it through criminal activities. But, as Porges told me in our interview, How to Rob a Bank is also a subversion of the cinematic trope of the noble bank robber, a rejection of that idealized vision of criminality. It's a reminder that what filmmakers portray has some impact on how we see—and take part in—the world. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to watch their movie. And if you enjoyed this episode, share it with a friend!
Seth Porges on his hit Netflix documentary "How to Rob a Bank" -- which tells the stranger-than-fiction story of the 'Hollywood Bandit,' a treehouse-dwelling ex-meth dealer who evaded authorities as he hit bank after bank in and around Seattle.
In a city where bank robberies were an everyday occurance, one Seattle bandit stood out among the rest. The FBI nicknamed him “Hollywood,” a savvy criminal inspired by heist films like “Heat” and “Point Break.” Beneath that elaborate prosthetic disguise was Scott Scurlock, a free-spirit living in a treehouse and spreading his stolen cash around. But when he plans to retire after one last big score, everything goes wrong. The Netflix film How to Rob a Bank traces Scurlock's escapades as the high-profile robber the cops are desperate to get their hands on. It shows the toll being “The Hollywood Bandit” took on him, as well as how his $2 million stick-up spree came to its cinematic conclusion. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews directors Stephen Robert Morse & Seth Porges. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched How to Rob a Bank yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.

Seth Porges and Chris Charles Scott's darkly comedic hit film “Class Action Park” skirts the trappings of 1980s nostalgia and chronicles the unbelievable rise and fall of the most insane – and possibly the most dangerous – amusement park that ever existed. In his discussion with Tiller, Seth reflects on the universality of doing idiotic, dangerous things as kids (2:08), the vital tonal shift in the film from hilarity to death (6:40), creating the film on their own dime (19:05), the editorial process (23:20), landing the film at HBO right at the onset of Max (26:15), how the first outline barely changed (31:30), and the choice to feature himself as an on-screen interview as well as incorporate voice-over narration (36:10). Dr. Lori Desautels, has been an Assistant Professor at Butler University since 2016 where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate programs in the College of Education. She was also an Assistant Professor at Marian University in Indianapolis for 8 years where she founded the Educational Neuroscience Symposium. Currently, the Symposium is in its 10th year, and now sponsored by Butler University College of Education. Through these conferences and symposiums, educators, parents and the community learn deeply about how adversity, trauma and resiliency impact the developing nervous system, helping our students to feel a sense of autonomy and purpose along with social, emotional and cognitive well-being. Because of her work, Dr. Desautels has been able to attract the foremost experts in the fields of developmental, relational and the social neurosciences which significantly grow the conference each year.Dr. Desautels has created a nine-hour graduate certification at Butler University in Applied Educational Neuroscience / Brain and Trauma. This certification has grown from six graduates in its pilot year in 2016, to over 400 graduate students in its now 7th cohort. The certification is open to students around the world as it has transformed into a virtual platform and format. The Applied Educational Neuroscience Certificate, created by Dr. Desautels in 2016, is specifically designed to meet the needs of educators, counselors, and administrators who work beside children and adolescents who have, and are, experiencing adversity and trauma.Dr. Desautels' passion is engaging her students through the application of neuroscience as it applies to attachment, regulation, educator brain state, and teaching students and staff about their neuro-anatomy thus integrating Mind Brain Teaching, learning principles and strategies into her coursework at Butler. Dr. Desautels has conducted brain institutes and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Costa Rica and Dubai on Mind Brain Teaching and Learning. She has created webinars for educators, clinicians, and administrators illustrating how educators and students alike must understand their neuroanatomy to regulate behavior and calm the brain.Dr. Desautels graduated with a BS in Special Education from Butler University, an MS in counseling education from Indiana University and earned her Ph.D. in philosophy with an emphasis in early adolescence/ thought formation from Indiana University and American Institute of Holistic Theology. Dr. Desautels resides in Indianapolis, Indiana with her husband, Michael. She has three grown children, Andrew, Sarah and Regan and four rescue fur babies.Regan Desautels, an artist from Indiana, USA, and Alexis Cruz Gómez, an artist from Hidalgo, México, are a creative team that works together on illustrations, woodburnings, murals. Regan has worked as an independent artist and muralist in Chicago and Hidalgo. Alexis has worked as a graphic designer for some local organizations like Saberes Colectivas (Collective Wisdoms), and ALDIMEX - Alianza Indígena Para el Desarrollo de México (Indigenous Alliance for the Development of Mexico), as well as international organizations like Slow Food. The creative team has most recently worked on graphics for Dr Stephen Porges and Seth Porges' new book and illustrated Dr. Lori Desautels' new book, "Intentional Neuroplasticity." Their development together and separate as artists has taught them to never stop learning from their work, and has shown them the magic that comes from collaborating with their clients and breathing life and color into their words and stories. From 1978 to 1996, in the wilds of Vernon Township New Jersey, there existed a place called Action Park. But, unlike most theme parks, this place's popularity went hand-in-hand with a reputation for poorly designed rides, under-trained and under-aged staff, intoxicated guests and staff, and a consequently poor safety record that result in multiple deaths and more personal injuries that one can ever imagine! And while Action Park's reputation was known far and wide throughout the upper east coast, the rest of the world is learning about it through director Seth Porges' documentary, “Class Action Park” now on HBOMax!! We talked to Seth this morning, which led to many stories about our own misspent youths….

The nostalgia of the 80’s and 90’s is a driving force of our pop-culture today. With the rise of streaming services like Netflix and thrilling documentaries like HBO Max’s Class Action Park, it is now easier than ever to get a glimpse into that era and make us push the limits of our recollections of the past. In Non-Compliant Podcast Episode 31, Host Jay Edelson, nationally recognized plaintiff’s attorney and Founder of Edelson PC, and Guest Seth Porges, Co-Director of hit HBO Max documentary Class Action Park, discuss the murky areas of nostalgia, the wild story of Action Park, the rise of streaming services, and the process of making a documentary. To start the show, Jay and Seth get nostalgic and talk about how 80’s and 90’s culture that has shaped who we are today (4:15). It is fascinating to see the transformation of kids that were often left alone to push their limits in that era, as they turn into the helicopter parents today that are hyper-focused on their children’s activities. Next, Jay and Seth delve into the wild true story behind Class Action Park and how its chaotic atmosphere made life-long memories for anyone that experienced its glory (10:05). While such a park doesn’t exist today, the documentary gives viewers a chance to ask themselves how they would respond to the anarchy and chaos (12:23). On a broader scale, Class Action Park also gets viewers to revisit their own experiences of growing up in the 80’s or 90’s in an era with more freedom (14:30).Later in the show, Jay and Seth discuss the growing popularity of documentaries that have evolved from Ken Burns-style informational shows to the wild-romps like Class Action Park (25:04). The rise of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max have allowed for more viewers to access documentaries for the first time, especially during the pandemic (27:36). But the uptick in popularity is also due to the differing style of documentaries we see today that force us to take a fresh look at reality (29:00). To wrap the show, Jay and Seth break down the process of making a documentary and how Class Action Park went from concept to one of the most popular HBO Max movies (30:50). Even with multiple streaming services, filmmakers must put in a lot of work to get attention for their projects to reach wider audiences through promotions and word of mouth. But at the end of the day, documentaries and movies will capture the most audiences if they are authentic and feel like they come from people with a passion for the underlying narrative (38:00). Check out the show to hear more about Class Action Park, why Chris Gethard is a great comedian and storyteller (22:00), and to catch a glimpse into Seth’s next project (40:00). If you haven't seen the HBO MAX documentary “The Legenda of the World's Most Dangerous Amusement Park” you truly have to see it to believe it, and Seth (Director/Producer) is with us to talk about it. As a kid raised in Northern New Jersey, Gregalicious being as old as a stone, grew up going there and can attest to the damage done and the authenticity of this movie. We talk about the insanity of when the inmates ran the asylum, and the legacy of the best teenage playground that ever existed and one that certainty will never exist again. Broken, Bruised and Scarred, Action Park was like a punk rock concert coming to life, and left you with that feeling you get after leaving a mosh pit with blood running down your body and you couldn't be happier at the end of the show. Thanks to Seth for resurrecting some amazing memories, and making everybody who didn't get a chance to go to Action Park jealous, and scarred sh*tless at the same time. CLASS ACTION PARK is streaming now on HBO MAX and for more info www.classactionpark.com You can catch up with Seth on Instgram @sethporges See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We give you the lowdown on a great documentary film, CLASS ACTION PARK, directed by Seth Porges that focuses on the scariest and most dangerous theme park that ever was. Action Park was definitely a fond and nostalgic memory for lots of teenagers, despite the high risk for personal injury and in some cases, death. It was the kind of place that parents would not have allowed their kids to go if they’d known more about it - or even if they’d know how crooked the owner was. The kind of place that simply would not exist in the present day. A crazy, free-for-all wild-west, no rules theme park with water slides and flume rides and all manner of mayhem that seemed to have been designed by an 8th grader on notebook paper. The film is funny, it makes you cringe, and it also brings the very real tragedies into focus. Highly recommended by the Cinemondo team for the fantastic 80s and 90s nostalgia.SPOILER WARNING: This episode contains MAJOR SPOILERS which means important story details will be revealed. Here's the gist: During its 1980s and 1990s heyday, New Jersey's Action Park earned a reputation as the most insane — and possibly the most dangerous — amusement park that ever existed. It was known as a lawless land, ruled by drunk teenage employees and frequented by even drunker teenage guests. The rides were experimental and illogical, and seemed to ignore even the most basic notions of physics or common sense—not to mention safety. Let's put it this way: There was an enclosed tube waterslide that went in a complete loop—and that wasn't even close to the most dangerous ride at the park. Lying somewhere between Lord of the Flies and a Saw movie, Action Park is remembered as a place so insane and treacherous that, decades later, anybody who ever stepped foot in it is left wondering whether their memories could possibly be true. It became a nearly perfect breeding ground for urban legends and myths.

Action Park was a northern New Jersey water park, open from the 1970s through 1990s, where many kids had their first kiss, their first beer, their first taste of adventure. But as Class Action Park directors Chris Scott and Seth Porges tell interviewer Eric Steuer, it was also a place where dangerous, poorly designed rides and waterslides resulted in many kids being injured, and even caused a few deaths. When people over 40 say kids today could never do the things they did "when we were growing up," one of the reasons for that is places like Action Park—a wonderland of danger that also became a wonderland for personal injury attorneys. In it, we’re transported to a time and place where the rules didn’t apply, where dreams became reality (even if they maybe shouldn’t have) and where the rides seemed to defy the laws of physics. The IAAPA conference is next week and there will be a ton of new attraction announcements. But most times, the new attractions use the same ride systems we've seen for years. We kick off this week's show talking about a NEW coaster prototype by S&S that could shake up the industry (and enthusiasts). We'll also talk with Seth Porges, one of the co-directors of "Class Action Park." This new documentary takes a look at the story behind "Action Park," the infamous New Jersey amusement center that was known for its "anything goes" attitude. We'll hear about how the park's wild attractions... including the iconic and dangerous looping waterslide!
Writer/editor/producer and all-around cool dude Seth Porges joins us for a lively and comprehensive conversation on pinball in America and abroad, its legal and moral journey throughout history, moving machines up five flights of stairs, and playing nothing but video modes. Stay 'til the end to hear the song Wesley Willis wrote about Seth!
I met Seth at this secret, underground gathering of thinkers in New York, known as ‘The Influencers’ where he was giving a disturbingly funny talk entitled ‘you can tell a lot about a man by the sex bot he makes for himself.’ Seth Porges is a journalist covering a wide range of topics from pop culture to emerging technologies. He has written for everyone from TechCrunch to Maxim, and is a regular commentator on numerous televisions shows on the National Geographic, Discovery and History channels. I probably should have asked him about the reference in his Wikipedia profile about his work as a test pilot on the maiden voyage of an experimental pulse jet-powered carousel, but we ran out of time talking about why pinball was once a moral hazard in New York City, the challenges of translating social interactions in virtual reality and the future of robotics.
