Looking back at the first round of the Culture Wars, with Jesse Helms discussing a crucifix submerged in urine on the floor of the senate, one figure remains misunderstood: Thomas Kinkade. The "Painter of Light." The guy your alcoholic grandmother who would never admit she terrorized you really loved. Kinkade's career combines the worst of American culture -- multi-level marketing schemes, Jesus Christ kitsch, and televangelism -- into one product. Jessa and Nico discuss Art for Everybody, the new documentary seeking to rehabilitate Kinkade's image, and whether if Kinkade were alive today he would be appointed the new head of the NEA or Kennedy Center (yes).  Shownotes and references: http://theculturewedeserve.substack.com

Filmmaker Miranda Yousef joins us to discuss her documentary Art for Everybody, which enjoys a 100 percent critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's the story of self-styled "Painter of Light" Thomas Kincade, who made a mint selling kitschy scenes of cozy cottages. Kinkade marketed himself as a devout Christian, but as the film reveals, beneath all that light lurked a dark side. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the first half, neuroscientist Kristen Willeumier shared ways in which we can build and maintain cognitive health throughout our lifetimes. Dr. Willeumier highlighted the uniqueness of each person's brain chemistry, saying that "every case is different… due to environmental factors or genetic factors." She underscored the significance of staying active both physically and mentally, pointing to studies that link physical activity with increased blood flow to the brain, which helps preserve cognitive function. "Staying cognitively engaged and physically active… can really help slow down or reduce our risk of dementia," she insisted. The conversation then shifted to dietary influences on brain health. Dr. Willeumier recommended the Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. "Berries have been shown to really help support healthy brain function," she noted, adding that foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish and walnuts, also promote cognitive well-being.Dr. Willeumier shared other practical tips for improving brain health, including engaging in mindfulness practices, reducing processed food intake, and managing stress, which can lead to shrinkage of key brain areas. "Stress can shrink brain volume in the prefrontal cortex… which is essential for higher cognitive functioning," she warned. Dr. Willeumier also touched on the future of neurotechnology, specifically Neuralink's brain-computer interface. "These technologies could really transform the way we look at what is possible with the brain," she said.Sleep was another crucial topic. Dr. Willeumier explained that restorative sleep is vital for memory consolidation and emotional regulation. Throughout the rest of the interview, she provided listeners with more tangible strategies to "biohack" their brains. "Practicing gratitude, taking brisk walks, and even enjoying a piece of dark chocolate can promote brain health," she advised.---------------------In the second half, animal communicator Amelia Kinkade shared stories of reincarnated animals coming back to the humans they love. "Everywhere I go, 75% of hands go up when I ask if people feel their pets have reincarnated," she shared. Kinkade recounted a story about a veterinarian's deceased cat who communicated details of her own death, and even described a future incarnation. "[Beings] can actually negotiate reincarnation," Kinkade noted.A significant theme of the conversation was the innate intuition that all humans possess. "There's no sixth sense; it's our first sense. We all have the capability to connect deeply with other beings," Kinkade stated. She emphasized that animal behavior often reflects human emotional states, saying, "If a person is upset, the animal mirrors that emotion—it's a deep spiritual practice."She also described her late chocolate Persian cat's reincarnation, which she encountered during a safari in Africa. "I had a vision of a lioness asking for my blessing for her cub," Kinkade said. Later on that same trip, she met the cub from her vision and realized her cat had returned. "He's come home to Africa, and he's changed species, but it's still him," she asserted. She encouraged listeners to embrace their connections with animals, explaining that they serve as guides and healers. "Your animal is your spirit guide," she explained. "They don't leave you forever. They just need to sometimes go off and get a new body."

Kerri Kinkade of Connecticut was a pioneer in her field. She was one of the few women to graduate in information technology during the Vietnam War. Throughout her career, she worked in technical support and retired a little over a decade ago. Her battle with pancreatic cancer began during the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Her symptoms included loss of appetite and later jaundice. Due to the circumstances of the pandemic and it being the holiday season, she had to wait until the New Year to see a doctor about her symptoms. When she finally did, they found a mass on her pancreas. Knowing that both of her parents died of different cancers, she understood that the term "mass" was not good news. Kerri was ultimately diagnosed with Stage 2 pancreatic cancer, which fortunately meant she was able to undergo surgery along with 12 cycles of chemotherapy. She describes the side effects of her treatment cycles as well as her outlook. Kerri also shares her choice to advocate for herself to continue doing the things she loves, such as traveling. During her treatment, she participated in a support group for pancreatic cancer patients where they shared their unique perspectives and experiences. Inspired by their stories, Kerri decided to compile them into a book, which took two years to gather and compose. Initially, the idea was for this information to be in a pamphlet or smaller informational resource, but she includes patients with all different stages and locations of tumors, along with insights from caregivers. Kerri explains she wanted to create a resource that provided information she looked for when she was first diagnosed, as she wanted patients to find a case that resembled theirs to give them a means of hope and better understanding through the process. Join us for this wholesome episode of the Project Purple Podcast to learn more about Kerri's story and her book, “Living Your Life with Pancreas Cancer”. This holiday season, discover another side to “The Painter of Light”!  In our final installment of "Live from Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival", Miranda Yousef joins Mike to discuss her feature documentary, “Art for Everybody”.  From an early age, Thomas Kinkade struggled with the impact of his impoverished youth, torn between emulating van Gogh's critical regard and seeking the economic success of a Norman Rockwell or Walt Disney.  As Yousef explains, turning himself into a successful brand cost Kinkade dearly, and in the thousands of “unpublished” works that he left behind, we can sometimes glimpse revealing aspects of Kinkade as an artist as well as a living, breathing human with a multi-faceted personality.   While firmly grounded in her subject, Yousef's film manages to go well beyond the life and oeuvre of this one individual to ask questions about the nature of art:  Is it meant only to “talk to” other art, to problematize representation, or can it also properly provide joy and even comfort?  And her film may ultimately be read as a plea that no matter what value we place on Kinkade's art, that we not hold disdain for those who appreciate it differently.   Follow: @artforeverybody on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

He was hailed as “The Painter of Light,” a titan of pastoral landscapes which glowed whimsically from the windows of malls and Disney stores across America in the 1990s. But inside Thomas Kinkade, the famed born-again Christian artist behind one of the most commercially successful art entities ever created, lurked a darkness even he couldn't cover with layers of shining lacquer. His tragic story of worker exploitation, belligerent self-destruction, and nostalgia gone awry was carefully hidden behind a wall of corporate money for decades but emerged from the shadows after Kinkade's sudden and unexpected death back in 2012. It's a piece of forgotten American art history so bent Teams Edward and Kimberly had to drop their monthly storytelling competition and join forces to share it with y'all correctly. If you've ever felt disillusioned with The American Dream, skeptical about so-called “Christian artists,” or creeped out by those relentlessly-cheery Christmas villages glowing in Hallmark stores every winter, hit play and listen as the veneer dissolves into truth far stranger than fiction. Alex Holman Alex Holman, the winemaker at Notre Vue Winery joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country today. This is Alex's first time on the show. Notre Vue means "Our View" in French. The property was once called the Balverne Estate. Notre Vue is their top tier brand that can only be acquired through the estate. Balverne is their 3-tiered brand, more of new world varietals, with wider distribution. Notre Vue is more based on old-world blends. The property has been growing grapes since the 1800s. Having earned a degree in Chemistry from Fresno State, Alex Holman first worked as an analytical chemist and in a fertilizer-pesticide plant. Then decided he wanted to work in a different place, so he went back to school for Enology. He is a native San Franciscan so that brought him home. He caught the fermentation bug from being a home brewer. Before we continue with Alex Holman, Dan Berger has brought another "cellar dweller" from his extensive personal wine collection, to taste and discuss. This one is a 2004 Syrah from Brandborg Vineyard & Winery in Elkton, Oregon. Dan says they have the most fun tasting room in southern Oregon. This wine has flavors of black pepper, raspberry and a bit of fresh plum. Dan says their wines are a great value at modest prices. Alex Holman detects some aroma of violets in it too. He likes that as a descriptor for Syrah and for him, that's a sign of a good one, when it's present. The Notre Vue property consists of 700 acres, 310 are devoted to forever wild open space. The Notre Vue website has a lot of pictures and descriptions of the property and the wildlife that lives there. They have about 220-240 planted acres with 16 varietals. The property is in Windsor, a half mile east of the freeway, up to the top of the hills. The Kinkade fire came through the property. It burned 80 miles of irrigation lines. They did manage to harvest some fruit and the rest of the work this time around has been a struggle. They sell more grapes than they bring into their own winery and contracts have been "difficult" this year. The testing labs were so booked up that it took 6 weeks to get his results on smoke taint tests. Dan says the soil type is different than most of their neighbors. The property is split between Chalk Hill and Russian River AVAs. The southwestern quadrant is ancient sea bed, more clay soils, higher magnesium. The northern part has the volcanic Chalk Hill soils. Their Bordeaux and Rhône styles are doing well up on the rocky soils, whereas their Pinot and Chard vines are in the lower areas. Alex Holman says, "A wise man once told me that wine is made from fruit, so that should be your first flavor." The Chardonnay they are tasting is "nice and dry, and lovely," says Steve Jaxon. Dan Berger says that one thing that is appealing about this tasting is that it is not too cold. Alex says it is important to have sweet and spicy oak. He pays a lot of attention to his coopers, that they are not overbearing. Notre Vue has a lot of open space and lakeside pavillions where they have tastings. Block 23 has a beautiful view of the valley. It is a great place to watch the planes when they do air shows. They are open daily by appointment only 10:30 to 4:00. They can also host special events for small groups of 8-10 and up to 40 people. Bob and Renée Stein have owned the property since 1992. They have two labels. Ten years ago, the property was called Windsor Oaks and before that it was Balverne. When they transformed from Windsor Oaks, Balverne became the three-tier brand with national distribution. Notre Vue is their special lots, only available on the estate. Bottle Barn would have Balverne rather than Notre Vue. He explains how the different labels are derived from different clones. They are also tasting a Rosé. Dan says these is a lot like Rhône wines, blends of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Dan says so much Sonoma County Rosé is made from Pinot Noir,

It's that time of year again, Book Fight family: time to throw a couple logs on the fire, pour yourself some eggnog, and listen to us make our way through another terrible Christmas-themed book. This time it's from the Thomas Kinkade collection. Did you know that the Painter of Light was also the Writer of Light? Or, more likely, that the Painter of Light had enough money lying around that he could pay some poor writer to bring his cheesy paintings to life? The specific Kinkade book we read was the fifth novel in "his" Cape Light series, called A Christmas Promise. It basically follows the plot of the Michael J. Fox movie Doc Hollywood, but ... more Christian. Also, we eat some weird holiday snacks that almost kill us. Enjoy the holidays, friends!
