Ahogy önfényező emlékirataiban, például a „Hollywoodi fenevad”-ban írja: „Hollywood történetében eddig én voltam az egyetlen forgatókönyvíró, akit üldöztek hölgyrajongói” – eredetiben a groupie szót használta. Hát, szép munka. Terjedelmes és szaftos életrajzaiban általában fölbe döngöli azokat, akikkel sikertelen filmet készített és elismeri azokat, akikkel sikereseket. A ma már megtért keresztényként élő egykori fenegyerek tényleg elérte, hogy a kolumbiai dzsungelre és Hobbes protokapitalista Londonára egyszerre hajazó Hollywoodban forgatókönyvíróként plakátnév legyen. Legutóbbi adásunkban a "Flashdance" (1983), a "Kicsorbult tőr" (1985), "Zenedoboz" (1989), az "Elemi ösztön" (1992) és a "Sliver" (1993) forgatókönyvírójáról beszélgettünk, aki nemcsak Magyarországon világhíres. It's Trent's pick this week and he's unleased an iconic one! It's the 1992 erotic thriller that saw Sharon Stone propelled into the Hollywood A-list, Basic Instinct! Basic Instinct, directed by Paul Verhoeven, was marked by controversy, meticulous attention to detail, and the collaboration of a talented cast and crew. Verhoeven worked closely with screenwriter Joe Eszterhas to craft a screenplay that blended elements of eroticism, suspense, and psychological thriller, creating a film that pushed boundaries and sparked debate. Casting played a crucial role in the production, with Sharon Stone delivering a memorable and provocative performance as Catherine Tramell, the enigmatic and seductive femme fatale at the center of the story. Michael Douglas's portrayal of Detective Nick Curran added depth and intensity to the film's protagonist. The production team faced challenges in filming the movie's steamy and controversial scenes, navigating issues of censorship and public outcry. Despite these challenges, "Basic Instinct" became a cultural phenomenon, earning both critical acclaim and box office success, solidifying its place as a defining entry in the erotic thriller genre. As Curran delves deeper into the case, he becomes entangled in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with Tramell, whose manipulative and enigmatic nature keeps him guessing at every turn. As the investigation progresses, Curran finds himself drawn to Tramell's allure even as he suspects her involvement in the crime. As the line between suspect and detective blurs, Curran must navigate a web of deception, betrayal, and eroticism to uncover the truth before it's too late. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

When "Basic Instinct" first graced cinema screens in 1992, it didn't just arrive; it detonated with the force of a cultural and cinematic bombshell. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and penned by Joe Eszterhas, this neo-noir thriller became a topic of fervent discussion, controversy, and analysis. Damo's pick for the podcast, undoubtedly, underscores not just the film's enduring impact but also its provocative standing in the annals of movie history. So, let's dive into the icy waters of "Basic Instinct" and explore what makes it such a compelling, if contentious, masterpiece. The Plot: A Labyrinth of Desire and DeceptionAt its core, "Basic Instinct" is a detective story, but labelling it as such feels reductive. The narrative follows San Francisco police detective Nick Curran (played by Michael Douglas), who investigates the brutal murder of a rock star. The prime suspect? Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), a brilliant, enigmatic novelist whose fictional murders eerily resemble real-life killings. What unfolds is a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, but who's the cat and who's the mouse shifts with the narrative's serpentine twists and turns.Cinematography: Crafting the Neo-Noir AestheticVerhoeven's direction and Jan de Bont's cinematography paint "Basic Instinct" in the stark contrasts and shadows of classic film noir, yet with a distinctly modern flair that's both sleek and raw. The film's visual style is not just a backdrop but a character in its own right. It amplifies the story's erotic tension and the psychological depth of its characters, using the moody landscapes of San Francisco and a chilling score by Jerry Goldsmith to deepen the atmosphere of suspense. The Controversy: Pushing Boundaries or Crossing Lines? No discussion of "Basic Instinct" can skirt around the controversy it ignited upon release. Its graphic violence and explicit sexuality, particularly the infamous interrogation scene, sparked debates on misogyny, homophobia, and the exploitation of women in cinema. The film was both condemned and celebrated for its unapologetic content, becoming a lightning rod for discussions about censorship, artistic freedom, and the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters in media. Despite the polarized reactions, it's this very controversy that cemented the film's place in pop culture and academic discourse.Character Development: An Intricate DanceThe chess match between Nick and Catherine is underpinned by their complex psychological profiles. Douglas' portrayal of Curran—a cop with a troubled past and a penchant for self-destruction—offers a fascinating glimpse into a man ensnared by his own desires and demons. Sharon Stone's Catherine Tramell, meanwhile, is an iconic figure of the femme fatale archetype, redefined. Stone delivers a career-defining performance, imbuing Catherine with an icy intelligence, seductive charm, and an enigmatic aura that challenges both Nick and the audience's perceptions at every turn. The Screenplay: A Double-Edged SwordEszterhas' screenplay is a masterclass in building suspense and developing intriguing characters, though it's not without its flaws. The dialogue sometimes veers into the melodramatic, and certain plot elements haven't aged well, reflecting the era's less enlightened attitudes. Yet, it's these imperfections that make "Basic Instinct" such a rich subject for analysis. The film's narrative bravado, combined with its thematic ambitions, provides fertile ground for discussions about power dynamics, obsession, and identity.Cultural Significance: A Mirror and a Maeldrome"Basic Instinct" arrived at a crossroads in American cinema and society, reflecting the burgeoning discourse on sexuality, violence, and censorship. It challenged audiences and filmmakers alike to confront their boundaries and biases. The movie's impact extended beyond the silver screen, influencing fashion, music, and literature, and sparking a wave of erotic thrillers that sought to emulate its success. Over three decades later, it remains a reference point for discussions about gender roles, media representation, and the intersection of sex and violence in storytelling.Damo's selection of "Basic Instinct" for the podcast is a testament to its multifaceted legacy. It's a film that can be celebrated for its craft, debated for its content, and analyzed for its cultural impact. Beyond the controversy and the steamy scenes lies a meticulously crafted narrative, compelling character studies, and a commentary on the human psyche's darker recesses. In revisiting "Basic Instinct," we're not just watching a movie; we're engaging with a piece of history that continues to provoke, unsettle, and fascinate. It's a testament to the power of cinema to challenge societal norms, to reflect our deepest fears and desires, and to leave us pondering long after the credits roll. For its boldness, its artistry, and its undiminished capacity to generate discussion, "Basic Instinct" remains a pivotal piece of cinematic art. And, perhaps, that was its intention all along – not just to entertain, but to incite, to provoke thought, and to remain indelibly etched in our collective consciousness.

Helmed by Paul Verhoeven and penned by Joe Eszterhas, the duo behind the provocative hit Basic Instinct, expectations were high for this journey into the world of Vegas showgirls. On today's episode, we're heading to the Cheetah Lounge for our stripper shift, stopping off to get some chips and Cristal, and also beat the everloving fuck out of Andrew Carver, while we revisit the absolute hot mess, but wonderfully campy film, Showgirls (1995). This movie was directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Eszterhas. This movie stars Elizabeth Berkley (The First Wives Club, Saved By the Bell), Kyle Maclachlan (Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet), Gina Gershon (Bound, Riverdale) and Gina Ravera (Soul Food, The Closer).Joining me for this episode is the wonderful Donovan Marcotte, with his fiance Bryan!! As part of our break before season 3, we have more deleted material from season 2 to share with you! We talk action figures that look like they're covered in lube, Dario Argento's Dracula being watched at work, horse noises run amok, bots attempting to scam our stream, Adobe Premiere shortcuts, a grossly unethical use of AI, white actors with good and bad Mandarin pronunciation, how great it can be to walk through cemeteries, and a potential pitch for Erotic Clue (just in case Rian Johnson is listening). Joe also offers an update on the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes at the top. Joe Eszterhas's tenure as the hottest screenwriter in town ended with two notorious 1995 flops: the NC-17 rated Showgirls (directed, like Basic Instinct, by Paul Verhoeven) and Jade (produced, like Sliver, by Robert Evans), We'll analyze why these films failed to connect with audiences in 1995, and, more importantly, why the media at the time seized on them as major embarrassments for the industry. Join us for HYSTO? Episode #178 - 1992's Basic Instinct - Written by Joe Eszterhas, Directed by Paul Verhoeven - starring Michael Douglas & Sharon Stone
Sharon Stone and Joe Eszterhas's post-Basic Instinct reunion film was one of the most troubled productions of the 90s. A post-Hitchcock tale of sexual surveillance given a technological update for the 90s, after a long battle with the MPAA the sanitized, R-rated version of Sliver was rejected by critics and audiences, but the movie and the juicy gossip leaked from its production (which included a love pentagon involving both actress and screenwriter) only enhanced Sharon Stone's aura as an old-school Hollywood star for a decade that didn't know what to do with her. One of the biggest hits of 1992, Basic Instinct was sold as Michael Douglas's return to Fatal Attraction territory, but its success owed to an alchemy of three other creatives: a writer (Joe Eszterhas) who was driven to become the highest-paid scribe in movies; a director (Paul Verhoeven) who was determined to redefine the amount of sex considered acceptable in a Hollywood movie; and a female lead (Sharon Stone) who had waited a long time for her breakout role, and finally found it in a bisexual murderess with the sheen of a Hitchcock blonde. We'll talk about all of that, detailing the extremely messy production that was protested by LGBT activists – and its screenwriter – virtually from beginning to end, and examine Basic Instinct as a collision of toxicity and commerce that was emblematic of just-pre-Clinton era. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we usually talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today is a very special episode with a very special guest. Karina Longworth of the incredible You Must Remember This podcast joins us - ahead of the release of her new season “Erotic 90s” - to discuss Erotic 90s B-Sides like Sliver, Boxing Helena, and Jade. We discuss the era of Joe Eszterhas, the appeal of Sliver, the failure of Jade, and the fractured ambition of Boxing Helena. We also discuss the famous Kim Basinger lawsuit that goes along with the film. Basic Instinct and its ignored sequel (Basic Instinct 2: RISK ADDICTION) are also discussed, and this line read gets a lot of time. Oh and, just for fun, enjoy this clip of Jim Carrey impersonating David Caruso on CSI: Miami. It'll brighten your day. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter at @TFSBSide. We wrap up Verhoeven Month and our coverage of Showgirls! We take a new approach to how we fix this movie to bring it more in line with how one would pitch an actual film. Joe describes his one and only experience in a strip club, Jack gives us a closer look at screenwriter Joe Eszterhas and his Fleetwood-Mac-esque 90's love life (note: don't take relationship advice from psychics), we briefly touch on some more of Paul Verhoeven's weirdness as we further discuss the documentary You Don't Nomi, Jack delves into Hollywood sleaze and scandal as he describes Girl 27, and we finally present our idea for how to fix this movie and prevent it from winning Worst Picture at the 1995 Razzie Awards. Put on your best Versace, heat up some brown rice and vegetables, and join us for this surprisingly unsexy finale. Verhoeven Month continues as we begin our exploration of 1996's Showgirls, a movie that actively destroyed Jack's appreciation for breasts. Possibly the only NC-17 film we'll be covering on this show, we delve into what does and doesn't work about it, cover some of director Paul Verhoeven's background beyond what we did in our Starship Troopers episodes, marvel at the impact video rentals can have, make entirely too many references to Marvel Comics and Grant Morrison (but who is surprised?), talk about how poorly this film treats its black characters, and set the stage for part 2's coverage of screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. Kick back by the burning remains of your Andrew Carver record collection, lock up the chimpanzees somewhere safe, and have a medical professional on standby in case Elizabeth Berkley's writhing somehow throws out your back and hips just by watching. Double Indemnity (1944) Double Indemnity is a 1944 American crime film noir directed by Billy Wilder, co-written by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, and produced by Buddy DeSylva and Joseph Sistrom. The screenplay was based on James M. Cain's 1943 novel of the same title, which appeared as an eight-part serial for the Liberty magazine in February 1936. The film stars Fred MacMurray as an insurance salesman, Barbara Stanwyck as a provocative housewife who is accused of killing her husband, and Edward G. Robinson as a claims adjuster whose job is to find phony claims. The term "double indemnity" refers to a clause in certain life insurance policies that doubles the payout in cases when the death is accidental. Praised by many critics when first released, the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards but did not win any. Widely regarded as a classic, it often is cited as having set the standard for film noir. Basic Instinct (1992) Basic Instinct is a 1992 neo-noir erotic thriller film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Eszterhas. The film follows San Francisco police detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas), who is investigating the brutal murder of a wealthy rock star. During the investigation, Curran becomes involved in a torrid and intense relationship with the prime suspect, Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), an enigmatic writer. Eszterhas developed the script in the 1980s. It became a subject of a bidding war until Carolco Pictures acquired the rights to the film. From there, Verhoeven signed on to direct and Douglas and Stone joined the project, after many actresses were considered for the role of Tramell. Before its release, Basic Instinct generated controversy due to its overt sexuality and violence, including a rape scene. Gay rights activists criticized the film's depiction of homosexual relationships and the portrayal of a bisexual woman as a murderous psychopath. In one scene, Stone's vulva was filmed as she crossed her legs, which she claimed was done without her knowledge, a claim denied by the director. There are several cuts available. It's Fall Verhoeven on Rogues Gallery! This is the magical time of year where we revisit the films of Paul Verhoeven. And WOW is this one a doozy. Showgirls was a critical and commercial failure when it was released in the fall of 1995, but the film found new life as a midnight movie and went on to become a cult favorite. So what's going on here? Is this so bad it's good? A misunderstood masterpiece? Or is it just as terrible as everyone seemed to think at the time? Let's find out. Topics include: how the success of Basic Instinct allowed Verhoeven and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas to run wild with this project, the controversy over the NC-17 rating, the two opposing character arcs the script seems like it's trying to give its main character, the way Elizabeth Berkley's performance was singled out by critics and why none of that is really her fault, how certain audiences have reclaimed the film, the straight-to-video sequel, and much more! The finale of our season on the awesome movie year of 1992 features our audience choice pick, Paul Verhoeven's Basic Instinct. Directed by Paul Verhoeven from a script by Joe Eszterhas and starring Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone, Jeanne Tripplehorn and George Dzundza, Basic Instinct prevailed over two other movies about femme fatales in our 1992 audience choice poll. The post Basic Instinct (1992 Audience Choice) appeared first on Awesome Movie Year.
There are some AWESOME Vegas movies out there. Classics like "Casino", "Oceans Eleven" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". There are also some TERRIBLE Vegas movies out there...like "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone", "3000 Miles To Graceland" and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2". I think it's fair to say that the film we're discussing in this episode falls somewhere in the middle. Considered to be one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, Showgirls (written by Joe Eszterhas, directed by Paul Veerhoven, and starring Elizabeth Berkley) has morphed into a huge cult classic. Thanks to a steady stream of nudity & gratuitous sex, the film was given an NC-17 rating and to this day, remains the only film with that rating to have had wide release in US movie theaters. And although Showgirls wasn't based on a true story, Eszterhas and Veerhoven claimed they did "extensive interviews" with people in the Vegas entertainment community to make the portrayal of the showgirl world as accurate as possible. So, did they get it right? We're about to find out. My guest for this episode, making her second appearance on the podcast, is Dani Elizabeth - a legit Showgirl and former cast member of the legendary Vegas shows, "Jubilee" and "Crazy Girls". Dani shared the story of the first time she saw Showgirls and how it almost led to a career change, we dove into the film with some character analysis & theories on why people watch the film over and over again, and we compared Dani's "showgirl life" to Nomi Malone's. Showgirls is a 1995 erotic dram film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Eszterhas, and stars Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle McLachlan, Gina Gershon and Gina Ravera. The film centers on a “street-smart” drifter who ventures to Las Vegas and climbs the seedy hierarchy from stripper to showgirl. The film was the second collaboration between Verhoeven and Eszterhas, after their success with Basic Instinct. Just as the AIDS-related death of Rock Hudson was finally forcing straight people – and Hollywood – to acknowledge that epidemic, a film was released that transposed the new climate of sexual fear into a murder mystery. The sleeper hit of 1985, Jagged Edge turned Glenn Close from a respected actress into a star, and established the brand of screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, who would later write Basic Instinct and Showgirls. Almost a decade after radical feminists began to call for a crackdown on violent sexual imagery, Jagged Edge tried to have its cake and eat it, too: infusing its sex and violence – and its depiction of a career woman – with a fundamentally conservative point of view. In the new episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, two films that had struggles with their casting. The hugely controversial Showgirls are one stage got close to landing Madonna. But the reunion of writer Joe Eszterhas and director Paul Verhoeven would battle a whole host of problems. The Hand That Rocks The Cradle was a more modest, off-radar production. But it still had two lead female roles that Hollywood stars weren't particularly keen on taking on. Stories of both are told in this episode. A Serious Disc Agreement is the only "serious" podcast on the Australian Internet about "Movie Disc Culture."Alexei Toliopoulos (Finding Drago, Total Reboot) and Blake Howard (One Heat Minute) are expanding their IMPRINT COMPANION podcast to include the best physical media releases worldwide. For this episode, Blake and Alexei discuss the new STUDIOCANAL Basic Instinct UHD. STUDIOCANAL - Basic Instinct 4KSTUDIOCANAL today announce the 4K restoration of Paul Verhoeven's (ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL, STARSHIP TROOPERS) BASIC INSTINCT. Commissioned by STUDIOCANAL, the film was restored through 2019 and 2020 from the original 35MM negative and supervised by the director himself, with invaluable input to the bonus material from Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas. As boundary-pushing today as it was in 1992, BASIC INSTINCT redefined the erotic thriller subgenre and remains a must-see for audiences globally. The film will soon be launched theatrically in France with STUDIOCANAL's partners Carlotta, coinciding with the French home entertainment release (June 16th 2021), and will also be in cinemas from June 17th 2021 in Australia and New Zealand, followed by a theatrical release from Rialto Pictures in the US later this year. STUDIOCANAL will also launch the film on Ultra HD™, Blu-Ray, DVD and Steelbook editions in the UK (June 14th 2021), Germany (June 17th 2021), Australia (July 7th 2021) and New Zealand (July 14th 2021)In addition to a new trailer, two brand-new artworks have also been created to promote the release which were designed by celebrated, French graphic artist Flore Maquin. Maquin is noted for her iconic Cannes Film Festival poster designs of 2018 and 2019 amongst a host of other film work.To coincide with the new restoration, a brand new 52 minute documentary, BASIC INSTINCT: SEX, DEATH & STONE has been created by STUDIOCANAL, TCM and Rockyrama and is being sold globally to broadcasters, having received its network premiere in France in December 2020. This documentary includes exclusive interviews and personal anecdotes captured in 2019 and 2020 with Paul Verhoeven, Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas, editor Frank J. Urioste, writer Joe Eszterhas and cinematographer Jan de Bont, and will feature on the Home Entertaiment releases for the film as a special bonus feature.RESTORATION DETAILS:The aim was to create an image just as crisp as audiences had enjoyed in 1992. The first step was to scan the 35MM image negative of the film in 4K DPX LOG 16 bits on Scanity – but the restoration team at Hiventy Laboratory in Joinville-le-Pont noticed a problem with the negative. STUDIOCANAL project manager, Sophie Boyer, explains – “we quickly realized that the negatives corresponded to the short version of the film. In addition, some shots from the most erotic scenes were censored in the United States. We went looking for these cuts: their negatives had disappeared, but we found them in the internegative. Thanks to this, we were able to restore the full-length version of the film, the only version that Paul Verhoeven wanted to have restored.”All damages on the negatives were identified: stains, scratches, dusty shots and instabilities. DIAMANT film software was used to remove these defects. The laboratory undertook over 100 hours of manual removal of the dark stains. Light filtering was applied to remove the superficial defects, with particular care taken to retain the grain and the texture of the original image. The film was colour graded for theatrical, home entertainment and 4K HDR release using previous digital releases and 35MM prints as a reference. The colour-grading required a painstaking homogenization between the different versions (the director's cut vs. censored versions). The sound was similarly restored – the dynamic of the mixes was improved and the sync checked throughout, with corrections made using Protools plug-ins for a 5.1 + 2.0 version, from sources 3324.SYNOPSIS:Michael Douglas stars as San Francisco detective Nick Curran, a troubled cop with a history of trigger-happy shootings. The death of a former rock star sends him into the orbit of the victim's lover, novelist Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), who immediately becomes prime suspect in the murder. But Nick's lust for danger draws him further and further into Catherine's orbit as he becomes dangerously obsessed with her. Can he prove her innocence and free her of suspicion? Or is she involved in the murder after all?The film also stars Jeanne Tripplehorn as police psychologist Dr Beth Garner, George Dzundas as Nick's partner Gus, Denis Arndt as Lieutenant Phillip Walker and Leilani Sarelle as Roxy Hardy. The cast is rounded out by great character actors like Bruce A. Young, Stephen Tobolowsky, Wayne Knight and Chelcie Ross.SPECIAL FEATURES available on Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, DVD and Steelbook:NEW: Basic Instinct: Sex, Death & Stone (53'10)NEW: An unending story – Scoring Basic Instinct (16'22”)NEW: New TrailerBlonde Poison – The making of (24'38”)Cast & Crew interviews featurette (6'29”)Storyboard comparisons (11'01”)Screen tests (8'39”)Audio commentary by Paul Verhoeven & Jan de Bont (128′)Audio commentary by Camille Paglia (128′)Blake Howard - Twitter & One Heat Minute Website Alexei Toliopoulos - Twitter & Total RebootSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

What if Rear Window was sexy… but also extremely boring? Like, really boring. Not even copious amounts of William Baldwin butt could save this! Sliver was based on a novel from Rosemary’s Baby and Stepford Wives author Ira Levin, written by Showgirls and Basic Instinct scribe Joe Eszterhas and directed by Phillip Noyce. Sharon Stone stars as an editor who moves into an apartment where the previous tenant seemingly committed suicide, she meets William Baldwin and they’re perfect for each other! They both love watching people on his many CCTV screens, actively ignoring the sexual abuse that one of the tenants is experiencing at the hands of her stepfather, having sex in different positions and truffles! Almost nothing happens in this movie!
In the world of Bad Movies, nobody can touch Paul Verhoeven's and Joe Eszterhas's Showgirls. Connor and Jon are left nearly speechless by the tastelessness of the film that "Hollywood doesn't want you to see." There's good reason for that slogan as it is nearly unbearable to watch. Even so, the boys slug through the film and rag on this weird part of film history that is better left forgotten.WARNING: Major spoilers for An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood BurnFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rulesoftheframe/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rulesoftheframe Twitter: https://twitter.com/RulesOfTheFrame YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCII7_Fevn8na1ZkXyfUeTQA/featuredFilms mentioned in this episode:---------------------------------An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn (1997) | Dir. Welcome to Chris & Chris Talk Movies. In this podcast, life-long friends Chris Ferry and Chris Huddleston discuss Sci Fi movies (sometimes the best Sci Fi movies, sometimes not), horror movies (occasionally some of the all time best horror movies…often…not), a few of the very best action movies (I think you see where we're going with this), and genre films from their childhood and beyond in this laid-back, rambling, but inviting series!Rated PG for occasional mature language and alcohol consumption.Episode Number 32: BASIC INSTINCT (1992)This week marks our first foray into one of the hottest genres of the early to mid 1990s - the erotic thriller. Perhaps none was bigger than 1992's BASIC INSTINCT, which made over $650 million worldwide in today's dollars. If there's one thing people remember from this blockbuster starring Michael Douglas (WALL STREET, ROMANCING THE STONE) and Sharon Stone (TOTAL RECALL, SLIVER), it's the infamous interrogation scene, claimed to have been the most freeze framed scene ever during the days of VHS. We discuss that and other entertaining topics such as everyone with a psychology degree being able to manipulate people's minds, whether or not this film still has the ability to shock audiences, and whatever happened to erotic thrillers (and will they make a comeback).Written by Joe Eszterhas (SHOWGIRLS), and directed by Paul Verhoeven (ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL), the BASIC INSTINCT cast also includes Jeanne Tripplehorn and George Dzundza. Is BASIC INSTINCT one of Michael Douglas' best movies? How does it rank among Sharon Stone's filmography?Send us your thoughts to chrisandchristalkmovies@gmail.com
In 1995, critics howled and self-appointed guardians of good taste were horrified at the release of Showgirls. Directed by Paul Verhoeven with a screenplay by Joe Eszterhas, the NC-17 film was a notorious flop at the time but is now considered a camp classic and a window into a moment of moral panic.
The After Movie Diner starts its perilous journey chronologically backwards through outrageously bad Eric Idle films bravely going where no other podcast thought it was at all reasonable or normal to go. This is the zenith of me getting some weird thrill out of being so "against the flow" that I torpedo my own show to cover obscure and unpleasant films featuring former Monty Python nudge nudger and Rutle, Eric Idle.To start of this catalogue of cringe and season of shite, we dive head first into the mire of madness that is Joe Eszterhas' unforgivably racist and sexist laugh vacuum An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn which stars a bunch of people who should be so ashamed of themselves, they should probably be publicly pelted with fruit: Sylvester Stallone, Whoopi Goldberg, Jackie Chan, Ryan O'Neal, Coolio, Sandra Bernhard, Chuck D and more!ENJOY!!
It's a very warm & steamy welcome back to Rob! And to celebrate his return, he's chosen a film guaranteed to make it awkward for Chris to watch on his phone on the bus. Yes, it's 1992's BASIC INSTINCT.
This week, we're joined by SUNY film professor Macy Todd to discuss two infamous -- for very different reasons -- 90s female in distress thrillers: Barbet Schroeder's "Single White Female" starring Bridget Fonda and podcast MVP Jennifer Jason Leigh, as well as another Joe Eszterhas/Sharon Stone 90s collab, "Slither." Would you risk it all for your gorgeous, rent-controlled apartment in New York? Is Jennifer Jason Leigh the most underrated actress we have? Why is "bimbo" Joe Eszterhas's favorite word? Is William Baldwin the worst Baldwin? There's only one way to find out, and we promise this is less painful than reading Joe Eszterhas's autobiography. "Single White Female" is available to rent on iTunes and most rental streaming platforms. "Slither" is streaming for free on Hulu and in in Joe Eszterhas's nightmares.
From Greece, to Chile, to Uruguay, to the Third Reich, if right-wing totalitarianism has ruled a land then Costa-Gavras has probably made a film there, or in a more politically friendly country that can pass for there. Focusing on his masterpieces Missing (1982) - about Pinochet's military coup of Chile in 1973 - and State of Siege (1972) - about the kidnapping of a US "diplomat" (read: torturer) by leftist Uruguayan guerrillas in 1970. Along the way we touch on his other masterpieces - Z (1969) and Special Section (1975) - as well as many other films in his back catalogue, including his brief sojourn to Hollywood, which saw the radical director form an unlikely partnership with hack screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. Along the way, we fire back at CIA lies and New York Times false news.

Name a more iconic duo than Joe Eszterhas and Paul Verhoeven, we'll wait. We watched Basic Instinct (1992) with Chip Pope (It Happened In Hollywood Podcast) and we need a drink... hold the ice. The feminist masterminds who went on to bring us Showgirls (we'll get there) started with a little movie that gifted one Miss Sharon Stone upon the world. We talk 90's erotic thrillers, Michael Douglas' dubious sex appeal and Joe Eszterhas' ability to write dialogue that makes American actors sound like Eastern European ESL students. We enjoyed Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers so much, we decided to tackle another one of his movies. Showgirls has achieved a cult status for being "so bad it's good," but some might argue it's better than that. Some would also argue it's just plain bad. Randy and Brandon invited their partners to join in this conversation, and the opinions span the whole range.
Showgirls. It’s a bad movie. The world is full of bad movies. But what does it take to make a really great bad movie? One that inspires a cult following and Halloween costumes and theme parties and ongoing public screenings and full-on fan obsession? Whatever that special magic is, Showgirls has had it for 25 years. And on this episode, we are joined by Matt Harkins and Viviana Olen— founders of the THNK1994 museum and curators of GODDESS: The Immersive Showgirls Exhibit at the Resorts World Casino in Queens—to discuss why the film’s popularity endures despite it being truly terrible.

From his coke-fueled Rolling Stone days to bedding Sharon Stone to finding God in the Cleveland heat, Eszterhas has amazing dish about the filthy perversions of Bob Evans, the unquenchable ambition of Elizabeth Berkley and the cow fornication film that could have ended Spielberg's career.
Matt, Kevin and Travis wade deep into the muck of legendary sleazeball writer Joe Eszterhas' work...again...and find some predictably icky stuff. Jagged Edge (Richard Marquand, 1985) Betrayed (Costa-Gavras, 1988) Jade (William Friedkin, 1995)

Was Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls just awful dreck from the pen of Joe Eszterhas or a subversive masterpiece about the subjugation of women?
Dave and James indulge in what can only be called one of their more idiosyncratic interests in bad films with this episode, discussing "director" Alan Smithee and the 1998 Joe Eszterhas-penned An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn. Tune in, there's not a good film in the lot!
Two different kinds of disaster movies enter theaters this week: San Andreas, which imagines the long-dreaded earthquake that will turn California to rubble, and Aloha, a Cameron Crowe project that’s been hobbled by bad buzz and low expectations. On this week’s podcast, we example our strange attraction to disaster movies. What do we find so entertaining about plausible mass catastrophe? We also explore the rise and fall of Crowe’s reputation, which has hit the skids since Elizabethtown and shows no signs of turning around. The game this week is “Double Vision,” featuring the long-promised duo of Sliver and Jade, two hard-to-distinguish (and, apparently, to hard-to-pronounce) sexy thrillers written by Basic Instinct scribe Joe Eszterhas. Then we wrap it up with our quickfire recommendation segment 30 Seconds To Sell.
It gets hot and steamy in the podcast room as Erik, Ryan, and Oktay discuss two erotic thrillers from the 90s. First, we buy an icepick from K-Mart and crack into Basic Instinct, the 1992 mega hit that kickstarted the erotic thriller craze, which dominated a good chunk of that decade. Did Paul Verhoeven's tongue-in-cheek direction come close to saving Joe Eszterhas' terrible screenplay? Next, we move onto more level-headed and less juvenile territory as we dig into Crash, David Cronenberg's deft and fascinating study of a unique and dangerous fetish. No, we're not talking about Paul Haggis' simple-minded take on race relations in L.A., which is perhaps the worst Best Picture Oscar winner so far. As usual, thank you for listening, please send us your comments so we can improve the show and look forward to new episodes when our insightful Portland-based film critics will discuss one overrated and one underrated film within the same genre or style. Two of the best talkers in the business, Colin Farrell and Joe Eszterhas, feature in the Empire Podcast this week. The former dropped by to talk Saving Mr. Banks, bad hair bleaching and Anthony Hopkins' anecdotes, while the latter took the time to talk Showgirls, Basic Instinct and much much more.
Photo Kibitz | Chatting about Photography, Photographers and their Images
It takes talent to consistently be in the right place at the right time and Lois Siegel has the knack for doing just that. For example, her talent has enabled her to work with legendary Hollywood writer Joe Eszterhas. In this episode of Photo Kibitz we also chatted about her first celebrity portrait, internationally renowned portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh and how she was selected to be one of only 10 photographers to photograph the Rolling Stones' concert in Ottawa. Lois is a filmmaker, casting director, writer, professor, musician and of course a photographer. She has won a Genie award and was named one of Ottawa's top 50 people who are shaping the future of the national capital.
The movie that made Elizabeth Berkley into a household name and paid Joe Eszterhas three million dollars, Showgirls is a "camp classic," according to its own DVD box cover blurb. What can we say about Showgirls that hasn't already been said? A positive Slant article almost ten years after release called it "essential" and "an honest satire" while Ebert said it was "not quite unredeemably bad," and "less perverse than Basic Instinct" (which featured the same writer and director).

I ett sjabbigt rum sitter Manuskriptmänniskan lutad över scenerna till en stor berättelse, the great story, my script.
Showgirls (1995) is finally reviewed in this episode. Paul Verhoeven and Joe Eszterhas’s ode to nudity is something to behold even if you never want to behold it a second time. Then in the second half we take a couple of listener voicemails and delve deep into the intellectual discussion of female nudity in movies. Stay classy, […]
