Order of Battle Podcast episode 89 What an honor to be joined by Brian Hickey in this great conversation about one of the Forefathers of GIJoe Adventure Team, Action Man, Action Force, and more.  Jason and Brian sit down to discuss the ongoing Kickstarter campaign, My Palitoy Story. Bob Brechin, the designer of Kung-Fu Grip and the Roboskull, has spent a decade documenting not only his own path through Palitoy and toy design, but Palitoy as a whole from 1919 to the shutting of the doors.  Brian is a phenomenal photographer, designer, toy collector, and one half of the Total Action Force, Total HACKS, Total Roboskull team. He's a great collector and creative to spend time and drink with. His enthusiasm is infectious and his skills are impressive. And now he has bent them to helping Bob bring this Palitoy history and story to life.  If you have one of the Total books you already know this is going to be gorgeous. If you don't, now is your time to jump in. If you love Palitoy, Hasbro, GIJoe, or general toy history, then now is your time to back this book. Do it now before you miss out! Video Version https://vimeo.com/645728789 About the Podcast In this episode of The Outliers Inn, Mule, JP, and guests discuss reported challenges and disruptions in Supply Chains and Logistics. After all, we have seen it in all the media; ships parked for as far as the eye can see off or Los Angeles (and to a lesser extent, Newark), trains that are 25 miles long heading into Chicago, reports of a lack of trucks (and truck drivers), and the threats of bare shelves at the store and a real Grinch's Christmas. But how much of this is real and how much is hype? Other than having to pay more (much more), has anyone really found it difficult to access the items they need or want? And we also discuss what the "root cause(s)" of the challenges might be and how many of them are self-inflicted wounds - and are government efforts helping or hurting? JP, being in the EU (Germany) has to confess that he has not been personally affected by the alleged disruptions, everything seems to be normal. The same is true of Mule and our guests; except that Andy from the UK shares that they endured a disruption in fuel and had challenges buying "tights". But all in, anyone that needs to buy a GI Joe with the Kung-Fu Grip for a Holiday gift will be able to get one. But Mule and Don both shared that industrial items (chips, steel, machinery, have some pretty nasty lead times and these are threats to businesses. Lead times aside, smaller manufacturers are being sidelined as component manufacturers tend to their largest customers first. They may be told they will be getting product this week or next, but then "poof", their allocation has been re-allocated; probably to someone yelling louder, more important or (gasp) to someone willing to pay more.

This week Almost Positive gives into the raving demands for more female presence on the show. The guys are joined by Sir Rollington’s girlfriend, Angie, and mutual friend of Sir and Van’s, Nerressa (two for one diversity guest!). They are also joined by local metalhead and man well versed in psychology Jose Sanchez. They get into the empowerment Jukebox, shining a light on more intellectual stimulating female MCs, Sir confesses he is being made to watch all the Twilight movies (yes, the teenage vampire love stories), then they discuss “Cuties” an apparently French Netflix series that has been causing an uproar for its portrait of tween girls dancing provocatively. The gang then talks about the male image, body positivity/inclusion for men, and how Kung-Fu Grip G.I. Joe is creating toxic masculinity. After a round of India or Mexico (which Van butchers with his 3rd-grade literacy level) they get into the news, where we find out that the WAP is breaking records, Steve Bannon is a scumbag, N.Y. cops like Trump and the Golden State isn’t being fried on an electric chair. Also, at some point, we learn that women just don’t want men to be happy on their floor-mattresses.

Let go of your Kung-Fu Grip

SOUL SCHOOL with Audrey

EP 59: Let go of your Kung-Fu Grip   Expectation is the root of all heartache – William Shakespeare   Want something so badly, you force It and squeeze it to death. Have you been there? I have too. In our relationships, in our expectations of others, in the outcome, and our desires. We squeeze it to death.   So how do you let go of your kung fu grip and detach from something you really want?   Our dreams, our identities, our ambitions, our relationships are often cocoons that lead us to the next. The cocoon has served its purpose. We get so understandably attached and get in conflict when it breaks or falls away, that we don’t see what it opens us to.   It’s a practice to Surrender control.   Set your intention. The key ingredient is to detach. Let go control. And most important have fun with it. Be at ease with it. When you can soften your grip and see what flows to you with an open mind, you will find that sweet balance between effort and ease and get in the flow with the universe rather than against it.   This may sound easy for something you don’t really want or need, but what if it’s something you want badly? Like a relationship? With THAT person? You and I’ve been there before. We meet someone. It’s instant fireworks. You start planning your wedding and names for your children. But then he starts to pull away. The feeling someone is falling out of like with you suckkkkks! Instead of shrugging your shoulders and saying “man, that’s a bummer. If not this relationship, then it’s opening doors for something better.” Your ego is saying “NO, this HAS to work out. we are meant for each other,” and starts to do all sorts of things to control the situation and the person. You may even convince him to stay – for a little while longer, but eventually fate will win.   Or you try to control an outcome. You outline what you want, when you want it and how exactly you want it to be delivered to you. But, you see, the universe has plans for you. it still may be that plan, but may be a different timing. Or not. Controlling keeps you from experiencing that moment as it is and keeps you separate from joy. Even if you received some of what you wanted, you may be disappointed when it doesn’t work out exactly as you wanted. You will miss the gifts the universe is giving to you.   The ego feels good when it feels like it’s in control. The things is, we aren’t in control of outcomes or people. Although it may feel good to have a projected outcome and feel in control, it doesn’t feel good trying to paste things together when they’re meant to fall apart. Or forcing something to happen, and missing the joy in the process.   The only thing you have control over is yourself – your thoughts, your emotions and your actions and words.   We’re always holding on to something – holding on to a relationship, controlling a person or an outcome, or even holding on to a certain belief or retelling a story that limits you.   Whatever it is you’re holding so tightly to, what would happen if you released it? If you were truly free from the attachment of how and when you wanted it to work out for you? it’s hard work. It takes practice to let go and stay open. It takes vulnerability. It requires you to befriend uncertainty and that you have Faith that you are experiencing what you are supposed to be experiencing right now.   By letting go, you would be free to experience what was meant for you. Not who or what you were holding onto, but what and who are really supposed to be in your life. instead of resisting the flow of Life, you will be with the flow of the Universe.

Markel. *Professor Paul* Welcome back to the Morning Mindset podcast. I am once again still indeed your host Paul Markel. Thank you very much for joining me. Now during last week's episodes a couple episodes last week. I talked about Christmas and Christmas Memories some of the memories I had from when I was a very young child and some of the memories that I had when I was a young man, just recently married, had a little son and such. Shared those with you and I keep those memories with me share them with my wife and my family and I wanted to talk today about what I believe is probably the best Christmas gift for your family now, I don't know about you. But if you're if you're similar to me or if you're in a similar position. - Each year, you know you will hear from your family. They will ask you what do you want for Christmas or do you want anything for Christmas? We do this with our kids all the time, right Little Johnny Little Suzy we say what do you want for Christmas Johnny? What you want for Christmas Susie the used to be really simple didn't it used to be simple? We wanted a GI Joe with the Kung Fu Grip or we wanted the Six Million Dollar Man. Steve Austin action figure, right? He wanted that I wanted a football or whatever a football. - Daisy Red Ryder BB gun 200 shot Range model with a compass in the stock in the thing that tells time it used to be really simple. Didn't it? We were kids. It was simple to just ask for something whatever it was you maybe you wanted ice skates or you know, you name it. But you wanted something simple or something that you'd had your eye on all year, and like I said when I was a kid, there are two times a year that you got toys or presents on your birthday and Christmas and Lord help you if your birthday was close to Christmas. - Because then you had to wait a whole rest of the year, you know, if you're born in January, you're kind of shortchanged man because people are like man, I just gave you a Christmas gift and it's your birthday. My son. My son has a January birthday and he gets kind of shortchanged the best way to do it is maybe to have like a June birthday. That way you can spread it out. My we don't do that anymore. We indulge our kids today. We spoil our kids we give them presents and toys all the time. But when you get older, you don't really need toys. You don't really need presents. - You know, when you're an adult if there's something that you feel like you need, that you need to satisfy your life, whether it's a new golf clubs or a new bowling ball or whatever. Whatever it is that you see generally you figure out your budget and you just go get it. You don't wait for Christmas you know when you're an adult especially if you're the dad if you're Santa Claus, you don't wait around for Christmas time to ask for a new whatever because you're the one who's in charge of getting this stuff anyway. - So, how do we deal with what's the best Christmas gift? What do you want for Christmas Dad? Do you want for Christmas Mom, and most of the time the honest answer is I don't need anything. I don't have to have anything. Now. You always say well, come on dad. I know you don't need anything. But what do you want? I got to give you a present. I got to get you something or you save your wife, you know, she says to you. I don't eat anything this year. - Don't get me anything. Which really means you need to get me something but you shouldn't have had to ask me that's what that really means or there's some better be something under the tree because of there's not I'm not going to be happy the best Christmas gift that I can remember ever getting and now that I'm older and I can consider it the best Christmas gifts to me are the memories. Of Christmases past. Are the memories of the times that I spent with my family? - As a child the memories of going over to my grandparent's house and having Christmas dinner and exchanging gifts in the living room, and you know, I got gifts that I that I enjoyed when I was very young right after Star Wars was released. I was a child once the original Star Wars came out. I was in elementary school and I immediately got into the Star Wars action figures, and I started collecting Star Wars action figures and one year for Christmas. When I like I said, I was in elementary school. I remember what year it was. It wasn't even 1988. It was in the 70s, but I got a death star playset. - That's right, the Death Star playset from my grandma and grandpa for my Star Wars action figures and that was wonderful, but. You know aside from the actual physical things when I think about that now when I go back and think about the Christmases that I've had over my lifetime, I don't think so much about the objects about the things about the toys. I mean you remember things like that because it's nostalgia. But what was more important to me and what has been more important to me, especially as I get older is the memories of the times that I spent with the people in my life where I was and I think about where I was I think about the situation, you know, there were sometimes when I was in the Marine Corps. - There was a couple of times a day. Could not go home for Christmas and that's one of the big things at least it was when I was in being in the military and you're in the military, especially if you're in the Infantry and you're deployed all the time, it's will you be home for Christmas? You know, we are home for Christmas this year, and if memory serves I was home for one. When I was active duty, I was able to come home for one Christmas and that there were several times that I made it home, you know a week after Christmas or I got to go home before what have you but one year I wasn't able to go home for Christmas because it just wasn't in the cards. - I had Duty and you know, we were doing we were doing our military stuff. But a good friend of mine only lived his hometown was only a few hours away from where we were stationed, and so we got a couple of days off not really enough time for me to fly home and fly back, you know, it's just by the time you get there you're finishing up in your turn around you're coming home again. So we drove over to his house and I spent Christmas with him and his family and it was wonderful. - It was wonderful, even though I wasn't able to be with my family. I was able to I was able to share it with him and his family. There were times when I was deployed overseas and I just shared the Christmas holiday with the people in my company my platoon my unit. Then I got married and had kids and so forth and what I'm saying to you is this right now as the Christmas season is approaching. People will say to you. What do you want? Maybe your kids say that? Maybe your spouse says that? - I would say and if you're the dad if you're Santa Claus, maybe your responsibility is to help all those other people. Make good Christmas Memories. Your job is to create fond Christmas Memories and sometimes the memories don't seem so fond when they're closed up and they become Van Der as you get farther away from them like trudging up and down the side of a mountain to harvest a Christmas tree to harvest your very own Christmas tree. It doesn't seem that fun when you're actually doing it. - After you're done years later, you can talk about it. So if you're the dad if you're the Santa Claus, if you're in charge of getting gifts for people, I would say one of the best gifts that you can give yourself and your family is to do something that creates fond memories. Things that people will carry with them long after the toys and the Trinkets and the ties and you know, all the crazy stuff that you get and you put on the shelf and then you just like don't even know what happens to it long after all that is faded away. You'll have those memories and that is what I hope that each and every one of you will have this year. Alright, ladies and gentlemen, I am your host Paul Markel. I will talk to you again real soon. The debate over Margaret Mead’s and Derek Freeman’s conflicting ethnographic reports has gone on for decades. While no longer a hot topic, Mead-Freeman stands as a testament to the power and, sometimes, imprecision of social scientific inquiry. In his new book, Truth’s Fool: Derek Freeman and the War over Cultural Anthropology (University of Wisconsin Press, 2017), Peter Hempenstall (emeritus professor of history at the University of Canterbury and conjoint professor of history at the University of Newcastle) gives an unprecedented look at the life and works of a controversial figure in the making of modern anthropology. In this interview, we discuss how cultural and nationalistic biases played a role in the Mead-Freeman controversy, whether or not Freeman suffered from mental illness, and why the man is often misrepresented in the history of the discipline. Jeffrey H. Cohen, a professor at The Ohio State University, has managed a rare feat: placing anthropology classics like Argonauts of the Western Pacific in the context of eating grasshoppers. His impressively readable Eating Soup without a Spoon: Anthropological Theory and Method in the Real World (University of Texas Press, 2015) is a retrospective on his first foray into the field, but it does a fair bit more than that. While recounting his own experiences in Oaxaca, Mexico, Cohen provides insight into how theory can be applied to the real world. The book transitions between high-level analysis of social relations in his adopted community and the harsh truths of working with human beings in less-than-comfortable settings. The result is a fun and interesting read, well-suited to undergraduate courses on introductory anthropology and field methods. Godfrey Ho - Who is he? What is he? How can one man steal so much footage to make his own movies and never be condemned? Why is he so revered? All this will be answered by Jeff & Aaron, as Nazli was busy lawyering the hell out of something! We are joined by Special Guest & Godfrey Ho extraordinaire Casey Nielson. The gang dissects one of his films, "Ninja Terminator", which splices two completely unrelated films together, utterly confusing the audience. But don't worry there's a ninja with eyeliner throwing knives at crabs, because that's a thing! Enjoy this Kung Fu Grip episode of Bad Movie Nite!
