The movie isscheduled to hit theaters in 2014. The comedy veteran and rising star, fueled by Perry's powerful vote of confidence, is ramping up her ambitions in a relentless mission to become the performer many people doubted but even more admire. (By Christopher Johnston for Eye on Ohio.Broadcast version by Nadia Ramlagan for Ohio News Connection Collaboration reporting for the Ohio Center for Investigative Journalism-Public News Service Collaboration) - While running for Cleveland City Council Ward 3 seat last year, Ayat Amin spent a lot of time canvassing neighborhoods and talking to residents about environmental issues. “What came up time and again in our conversations that really resonated with people was air quality,” she said. “Specifically there were a lot of residents who felt they were experiencing poor air quality but didn't know what to do about it.” When she inquired about signs of air pollution in their neighborhood, residents told her they would have to wipe soot off of their outdoor plants or off their houses. In Ohio City, residents of Lakeview Terrace, one of the oldest public housing complexes in the U.S., complained of particles in the air from the roughly 1,000 trucks passing through, spewing exhaust and stirring up dust that landed on their cars, homes and in the air they breathed every day. After she lost the election to incumbent Kerry McCormack, Amin convened an informal citizen action group that met regularly to research available data and discuss air pollutants such as methane and lead in the air. PUBLIC VERSION. Celebrated filmmaker and playwright Neil LaBute (IN THE COMPANY OF MEN, NURSE BETTY, DEATH AT A FUNERAL, LAKEVIEW TERRACE, YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, THE WICKER MAN) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his craft in creating some of the most provocative and beautifully honest cinema and theater of the last 25 years. From growing up in a blue collar family with a father that didn't initially view filmmaking as a real career… to shooting his first feature film without any prior filmmaking experiences… to welcoming the collaboration of cast and crew when blocking a scene… to the power of a master shot and using coverage sparingly… to how he approaches scenes that require intense intimacy between actors… to the creative leeway of shooting independently despite the sacrifice of resources… to the incredible value of spending quality time with cast during pre-production… to the benefits of casting fresh faces and just how much an audience can forget that they are watching a performance… to critics and audiences projecting a character's worst behavior onto the filmmaker personally… to the making of his latest film HOUSE OF DARKNESS (in theaters September 9th and on-demand/digital September 13th)… to revealing which one of his films was actually shot to be in black and white… this conversation with one of the industry's most daring, artistic, and important voices is one that will hopefully inspire you to create the art you truly want to create rather than conforming to whatever is currently considered en vogue and safe.  This Christmas the biggest podcast event of the year is going to get even bigger! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 44% based on 164 reviews, with an average rating of 5.45/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "This thriller about a menacing cop wreaking havoc on his neighbors is tense enough but threatens absurdity when it enters into excessive potboiler territory." On Metacritic, the film has an average weighted score of 47 out of 100, based on 28 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C+" on an A+ to F scale. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film a very positive review, awarding it his highest rating of four stars and saying: "Some will find it exciting. Some will find it an opportunity for an examination of conscience. Some will leave feeling vaguely uneasy. Some won't like it and will be absolutely sure why they don't, but their reasons will not agree. Some will hate elements that others can't even see. Some will only see a thriller. I find movies like this alive and provoking, and I'm exhilarated to have my thinking challenged at every step of the way." Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle also enjoyed the film, saying: "In its overall shape and message, Lakeview Terrace is a conventional suspense thriller, but the details kick it up a notch. ... The fun of Lakeview Terrace is not in what happens but in how it happens." J.R. Jones of the Chicago Reader called the film "one of the toughest racial dramas to come out of Hollywood since the fires died down – much tougher, for instance, than Paul Haggis's hand-wringing Oscar winner Crash." Dennis Harvey of Variety said that Lakeview Terrace "delivers fairly tense and engrossing drama" but "succumb[s] to thriller convention." Anthony Lane of The New Yorker said that "the first hour of the film ... feels dangerous, necessary, and rife with comic disturbance," but added that "the later stages ... overheat and spill into silliness." James Berardinelli of ReelViews gave the film two stars out of four, saying that "the first two-thirds of Lakeview Terrace offer a little more subtlety and complexity than the seemingly straightforward premise would afford, but the climax is loud, dumb, generic, and over-the-top." Wesley Morris of The Boston Globe said that "the movie might have something to say about black racism, but the conversations go nowhere, and the clichés of the genre take over." Sura Wood of The Hollywood Reporter said: "[The idea of] a black actor cast as the virulent bigot, with the object of his campaign of harassment the young interracial couple who move in next door, could be viewed as a novel twist. But the film, absent a sense of place and populated by repellent or weak characters, soon devolves into an increasingly foul litany of events." Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal gave it one half of a star out of five, and called the film a "joyless and airless suspense thriller."

A talk with the neighbors shows that he was not a liked man, but the stories she hears of other parts of his life tell a different story, All this is adding to one question "Who was Pieter Jorgenson?" Neil LaBute is not a bastard. Nor is Neil LaBute a misanthrope, a misogynist or a malcontent. Despite the repellent nature of the characters and scenarios he's conjured for stage and screen, LaBute-over the phone, anyway-is a pretty likable guy. He's not one of the soulless, woman-hating corporate assholes from is breakout film "In the Company of Men." He isn't a manipulative, callow prick like the cretins who populate his play and movie, "The Shape of Things." He's none of these things-but he's eerily good at creating these convincingly awful people and placing them in a morally repugnant fictional world. His acidic body of work also includes "Your Friends and Neighbors" and "Nurse Betty" for film, along with "Fat Pig" and "In A Dark Dark House" for theater. LaBute, in fact, is so unlike one of his sociopathic douchebags that he will be returning to KU-where he received a masters degree in theater and film in 1989-to kindly deliver a lecture on his work called "Life Onstage and on Film." Also uncocksuckerlike of him, LaBute took time out of finishing his upcoming film, "Lakeview Terrace" (with Samuel L. Jackson,) to chat with little ol' lawrence.com. He spoke with us from his editing suite in Los Angeles about revisiting Lawrence, conspiracy theories surrounding his work, and having his own adjective.
