One of Perth's largest local councils is considering a redevelopment of the rear lane ways in many of its streets. Some Town of Bassendean lane ways are said to be dilapidated and in need of attention but the council thinks they are ideal for redevelopment into community spaces. Bassendean Mayor Kath Hamilton told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings the council was eying in excess of 25 laneways, with residents keen to have the opportunity to buy the land and include it in their backyard. "There's a variety of treatments proposed for these laneways ... these older laneways are a hangover from the last century, where many of them were by-products of earlier subdivisions at the beginning of the century... there's quite a complicated process involved with laneways and right of ways and how to close them."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rob and I managed to get a second session in this week. This time running. He used to live in this neighbourhood as a kid and he went to the same schools as my kids, several years earlier. I showed him all the laneways through our neighbourhood. This is a very clean real time, full time raw recording. When they turn out well they don't really need an edit.(42:XX)

In 1918, Melbourne was celebrating the end of WWI, unaware an insidious new war on home turf had just begun. That’s when a new drug – cocaine – first came under the nose of Melbourne police, introduced by a prostitute from Sydney. And the mastermind of the cocaine trade was Charles le Marchant, a longtime opium addict who had honed his criminal skills as a teen gang member in Chinatown. In the early 1900s, Chinatown's Heffernan Lane was one of the worst streets in Melbourne thanks to brothels, opium dens, gambling rooms and a tendency to attract murderous thieves. And its most notorious resident was Chinese-born gangster Harry Quong, whose upstanding parents migrated to Melbourne to give their son "a good English education". Instead, he repaid his parents’ sacrifice by becoming a bank robber, thief and all-round scoundrel - then scored himself 15 years in jail for shooting a policeman. In 1919 as a gang war called the Fitzroy Vendetta raged, Squizzy Taylor and a cast of misfits were tearing apart the inner Melbourne suburb. And living amid the sly grog shops, opium dens, brothels and slums was one man, World War I veteran Arthur Skerritt, whose life of crime culminated in a shocking murder. The Collis family caused mayhem for decades with their sly grog shops and gang violence until authorities were forced to declare their homes condemned to run them out of town. Read more at heraldsun.com.au/ibaw See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Her name is barely known today, but the formidable Ann Shiell was a powerful crime boss, slum landlord, brothel madam and controller of gangs of thieves in Melbourne in the late 1800s. For more on this story, go to heraldsun.com.au/ibaw See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

If you're going to venture outside in Glasgow you'd better like splashing along. Summer 2007's been a total write-off weather-wise so when I should've paddling on Troon beach, a melting double nougat in hand, I've been stomping around my living room to The Undecided? spitting out teen revenge and to A Sunny Day In Glasgow's colossal reverb attack. When I should've been throwing shapes like Ronaldo on the unforgiving blaze of Kelvingrove Park I've been sipping tea and swooning to the gently marvelous debut albums from Taken By Trees and California Snow Story. When I should've been watching the sun paint the sky with oranges and purples as it sets over Arran, I've had the curtains drawn and my eyes closed as I try to remember if anyone has done a better version of a Dan Treacy song than The Nomen's take on "Mysterious Ways". Aye ... it's been a glorious summer! I hope you enjoy listening to "The Sound of Rain" and if anything excites you please, please, please *BUY* the record.
