Lauren Skerritt, 28, is a fantastic physical shape due to being an athlete and obstacle course racer. The Rhode Islander stops by a Greenville Panera Bread and drinks two and a half servings of Panera Bread's "Charged Lemonade". The next day, Skerritt is rushed to the Emergency room suffering from an irregular heartbeat.  Skerritt is shocked when doctors diagnose her with a heart condition that can lead to stroke and other complications known as atrial fibrillation. Skerrit says her heart problem was caused by the popular beverage from Panera Bread that contains as much caffeine as three cans of Red Bull, according to a lawsuit. Skerrit's lawsuit is not the first, two other suits have already been filed against the restaurant chain over it's "charged lemonade".  Panera has said the previous two lawsuits were “equally without merit.”  This lawsuit claims Skerritt continues to experience supraventricular tachycardia with associated shortness of breath, palpitations, brain fog, difficult thinking and concentrating, body shakes, and weakness.  Joining Nancy Grace Today: Dale Carson- High Profile Criminal Defense Attorney (Jacksonville), Former FBI Agent, Former Police Officer (Miami-Dade County), Author: "Arrest-Proof Yourself”, DaleCarsonLaw.com, Twitter: @DaleCarsonLaw  Caryn L. Since it closed in 2000, the Ontario Reformatory, and the 108 hectares that surround it, have been the source of much conversation, optimism and fantasy. We got the Guelph Innovation District Secondary Plan, we've got a Heritage Conservation District Study, and now we've got a project to turn the area into a national park. Is creating a national park the end game for the OR Lands we've been looking for? Creating a National Urban Park system was an initiative started by the federal government in 2021, when they pledged $130 million to create 15 sites across Canada with local partners. To become a national urban park, any proposed site has to meet three criteria: it has to conserve nature, connect people with nature, and advance reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. The OR Lands check all three boxes.  Now, you may be thinking that the OR Lands are already well protected by various heritage designations, but it's the connections to Indigenous heritage that are the most at risk;  an old accessory building that was home to a program that helped Indigenous inmates work through their trauma and led many of them to overcome a life of substance addiction and crime. The proof is there in murals on the wall, in the basement of a building that's outside the current heritage protections for the rest of the site. With that heritage at stake, we turn to an expert. Former chair of Heritage Guelph P. Brian Skerritt is leading this effort to turn the OR Lands into a National Urban Park and he joins us on this week's podcast to tell us about it. He'll talk about why the OR lands are the best candidate for a national park in Guelph, the difficulties in accessing the Indigenous history on the site, and what Skerritt would ideally like to see on the property in terms of ensuring that all the heritage there is preserved. So let's talk about making a national urban park on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can learn more about the creation of National Urban Parks at Parks Canada website. You can add your name to a petition in support of the OR Lands Urban National Park at the petitions page of the Our Commons website. The Heritage Conservation District Study is in it's second and final phase, and you can learn more about that on the City of Guelph's website. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. On this episode of Free Range, UVA Law Professor Mike Livermore speaks with Henry Skerritt, Curator of Indigenous Arts of Australia at the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection at the University of Virginia. Skerritt begins by introducing the Kluge-Rhue and how this collection of over 3,000 works of Indigenous Australian Art ended up at the University of Virginia. He explains that while aboriginal Australian art is the longest continuous artistic tradition in the world, it is also a contemporary movement that was used for political representation in the 20th century (0:49 - 4:50). They discuss the connection between art and politics, explaining how aboriginal art has played a role in asserting property rights for indigenous peoples. Skerritt discusses Milirrpum v Nabalco, the first significant case for indigenous land rights in Australia, which was initiated by the Yirrkala bark petitions in the 1970s. Ultimately, the political movement spurred by the bark petitions led to the Aboriginal Land Rights Act of 1976 and continues to have substantial influence today (4:50 – 11:00) Livermore and Skerritt then discuss an aboriginal painting called “Djambarrpuyŋu Mäna” or “Shark of the Djambarrpuyŋu Clan” by Wilson Manydjarri Ganambarr. Link: https://madayin.kluge-ruhe.org/experience/pieces/djambarrpuynu-mana-shark-of-the-djambarrpuynu-clan/ Skerritt discusses the relationship between the patterns and designs in the work and the cultural stories and traditions that they reference. (11:30 - 16:17). Livermore and Skerritt then discuss the relationship between contemporary Aboriginal Australian art and traditional art practices. (16:20 - 22:51). Skerritt and Livermore then turn to the diversity of cultural traditions that inform Indigenous Australian art. He explains that these paintings have ancestral narratives, called songlines, that serve a deep narrative and cultural function, connecting people from different clans and places. He describes the songlines as the world's most beautiful GPS system that talks about ownership and belonging (22:58 - 26:55). They then analyze a work by Dr. Djambawa Marawili titled “Journey to America.” Link: https://madayin.kluge-ruhe.org/experience/pieces/americalili-marrtji-journey-to-america/ They discuss the main story of Bäru, the crocodile man who brings his ancestral fire into the world. He explains that the overall message of the painting is that if the Aboriginal Australians put their art into the world, it can give them power and political representation (27:00 - 36:10). The question is raised over the relationship between political representation versus appropriation and the difficult challenges this sometimes raises (36:11 - 43:10). They analyze another piece by artist Noŋgirrŋa Marawili, one of the oldest painters working today. https://madayin.kluge-ruhe.org/experience/pieces/baratjala-baratjala-2/ Her works bring up questions of tradition and innovation: it both grabs the attention of the contemporary art world and maintains connection to traditional designs and practices, speaking to two different audiences at the same time (43:12 - 49:30). They discuss how artists today have to engage with a globally connected world, that every great artwork has to speak both to its own place and the world around it. Skerritt discusses how Aboriginal artists do not sacrifice their own unique identity to produce their works and that they insert their identities into larger dialogues of art and politics without giving up power of where they come from (49:31 - 52:13). Skerritt describes the movement as an extraordinary cross-cultural gift that teaches us the lesson that even though we may not all have the same culture or speak the same language, artists can find common ground and communicate in their own unique ways (52:15 - 57:32).

Many '80s babies first met xenomorphs in 1986's "Aliens," but there just something special about the 1979 Ridley Scott masterpiece that started it all. It's more suspenseful, more thought-provoking, more groundbreaking. That doesn't mean we can't laugh at it. Face it: Mother is just a room of blinky lights, the ovamorphs look like lady parts, the crew of the Nostromo is hilarously reckless, and the chest burster kinda resembles a demented Muppet. Angus Mitchell Oration 2021 ADJUCT PROFESSOR JOHN SKERRITT Deputy Secretary, Health Products Division (NTGA, Office of Drug Control) "The COVID-19 pandemic response in Australia and the region: vaccines, medicines and masks…where to from here?" Dr Skerritt has a high national profile dealing with the pandemic and generously agreed to fly down to deliver the 2021 Angus Mitchell Oration. Not only is he an eminent public servant but he has strong personal links with Rotary making him doubly suitable to be our Centenary Angus Mitchell Orator. He was awarded a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship (then known as a Rotary Foundation Fellowship) for post-doctoral work in pharmacology and neurology at the University of Michigan, USA to build on his PhD from The University of Sydney. In 2012 he was honoured internationally by Rotary International being the world wide winner of the ”Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award” for his contribution to greater understanding and peace through service to humanity. Only one other Australian has been so recognised – our former member Dr Alex Buchanan. John's Global Alumni Service award was made for two streams of contribution – contributions in research in health, agricultural and environmental sciences plus achievements as a leader of Australia's overseas development assistance (aid) program. While Deputy Secretary in the Victorian Government from 2009-2012 – overseeing emergency management, biosecurity, fisheries, and regional economic development through agribusiness in the former Department of Primary Industries, he was a member of Hampton Rotary Club. Effectively he remains an Honorary Member of that Club, as while he works in Canberra during the week, his weekend home is in Melbourne. He comes down for a number of weekend Rotary activities, including their popular monthly Farmers Markets. His wife, Amanda Hill is current President of the Rotary Club of Hampton. He has an extraordinarily broad range of experience in medical, agricultural and environmental policy as well as regulation, research management, technology application and commercialisation. In the 1990's he held senior management positions in CSIRO and Cooperative Research Centres. Dr Skerritt has been involved in international development assistance projects from the mid-1980s until the present, and from 1999-2009 he was Deputy CEO of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, and had overall management of about $2 billion in international aid projects. He has significant experience on boards of international and national organisations. From 2005-2012 he was Board member and then Chair of the International Water Management Institute, and he is currently Vice Chair of the International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Centre for Innovation in Regulatory Science. As well as his PhD in Pharmacology from Sydney University where he was the first University Medallist in that discipline in 150 years, he is an adjunct Professor of the Universities of Sydney, Queensland and Canberra – in medicine, agriculture/food and pharmacy respectively. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and a Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration (Victoria). With such an extraordinary range of skills, experience and plus his sustained connections to Rotary, we are privileged that John Skerritt is the Centenary Angus Mitchell Orator.

In the first of our Summer of Summer series, we take a brisk jog through the burning hills of Australia's Blue Mountains, a week before Christmas, as Architect Daddy Tom Skerritt tries to save a giant wooden frame from burning to the ground in 1981's A Dangerous Summer. He also seems to have a very strange relationship with his daughter and, wouldn't you know it, lots of blueprints. We ponder who the arsonist is and how Skerritt is going to stop them and wonder if any Christmas miracles will occur before the film's end. Plus, we bring back Beach Cop Joe Summerman and see how he might deal with this mess.

Seth MacFarlane's feature-length directorial debut "Ted" is just one long fart: funny in theory and for a second, but when the butt-trombone just continues for two hours, it stops being humorous and you realize you're just sitting in a room where everything smells. Because most people in the world are stupid, this messy flatulence of flat racist and homophobic jokes and '80s references made $549.4 million at the box office, spawned a successful sequel, and was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. MacFarlane plays the title character (both in voice and motion capture), Ted, a foul-mouthed, toxic, alcoholic teddy bear with a penchant for racism and banging hookers (even though he doesn't have money or genitals). Mark Wahlberg plays John Bennett, Ted's best friend who as a child wished his teddy bear would come to life. He’s an immature, childish man in his 30s who is whipped by his girlfriend (played by Mila "Meg Griffin" Kunis) and will do anything—even cut ties with Ted—to stop her from dumping him. Joel McHale plays Mila Kunis' character’s sexually harassing boss who didn't need to be in this movie at all.  And Giovanni Ribisi plays Donny, Ted's stalker, which leads to a funny kidnapping scene, but by then, we've already been stewing in this rancid air for so long that we can't wait to walk out of the theater and breathe some well-needed fresh air. Join us as we break down why this movie's humor doesn't work, discuss how playing Tetris for too long makes you go insane, and wonder why Norah Jones is somehow in this movie and integral to its plot. Day of Days stars Tom Skerritt and Claudia Zevallos Day of Days is a painful movie to watch. Don’t get me a wrong – it’s a pretty fascinating two-person indie drama about an old man’s last day on earth and the substitute nursing aide who picked the wrong day to be on call. What makes the movie painful is seeing actor Tom Skerritt playing such an elderly, infirm old codger. He’s too damn good at convincing the viewer that he could go at any minute. CLAUDIA ZEVALLOS podcast excerpt: "I lot of people have a different takeaway from the movie. They have regret, they have pain, they have tears of joy. That's the beautiful thing about 'Day of Days.'" You know Skerritt – he’s a beloved American character actor who has starred in M*A*S*H, Alien, Top Gun, A River Runs Through It, Up in Smoke, and the television series “Picket Fences.” And then there is his co-star, Claudia Zevallos, a Lee Strasberg trained Peruvian actress who struggles to dissuade her one-day charge of his notion that the only thing that lies ahead of him is a walk to a bright light at day’s end. As Marisol, Zevallos has her own world of hurt and loss of faith to battle this day. Zevallos seems both familiar and exotic in the role, but she is a fresh face and a distinct talent, whose previous English language film roles include A Better Place. CLAUDIA ZEVALLOS podcast excerpt: "What I picked up from Tom Skerritt was that he was always on time. And he always had a smile. It didn't matter what we were working on that day. He was very much a professional. A gentleman, for sure. And he was always trying to read the director, Kim Bass." Key interview moments: • 2:30 Actress Claudia Zevallos talks about the intense emotion reaction different people to her two-person drama, Day of Days; • 13;10 Zevallos reveals what she learned about professionalism from veteran actor Tom Skerritt on the set; • 24:05 She kept reminding herself to live in the moment while shooting Day of Days. Tom Skerritt (Picket Fences), Nancy Allen (RoboCop), Heather O’Rourke (Poltergeist), and Lara Flynn Boyle (Twin Peaks) star in this far-beyond-its-prime sequel, Poltergeist III! Carol Anne (O’Rourke) from the previous Poltergeist movies now lives with her aunt (Allen) and step-uncle (Skerritt) in a high-rise building in Chicago. She attends a school for weirdoes because of her previous ghost experiences, and after her cousin Donna’s (Boyle) night of teenage debauchery, she’s kidnapped by ghosts. Her aunt and uncle try desperately to rescue her with the help from Tangina (Zelda Rubinstein, returning from the first movie) and the film jumps haphazardly from mirror-induced jump scare to jump scare.
