What does accessible audio look like when it's designed for real-world environments—not just controlled settings? In this conversation, Jonathan Hoskin of Ampetronic explains how Auracast was deployed at Bristol Temple Meads railway station to deliver clear station announcements directly to personal devices such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, earbuds, and smartphones.Host Andrew Bellavia speaks with Jonathan about how the project came together, why Auracast was well suited for a busy, historic train station, and how it addresses common challenges with traditional assistive listening systems. Jonathan walks through how the installation improves clarity in noisy spaces, allows passengers to move freely throughout the station, and provides a more practical listening experience than relying on loudspeakers alone. The discussion also looks ahead to what this deployment could mean for future accessibility, including easier ways to connect, multiple language streams, and emerging tools like live captions. Together, the conversation highlights how Auracast could help make public spaces more inclusive and easier to navigate for people with hearing challenges and beyond.Be sure to subscribe to our channel for the latest episodes each week and follow This Week in Hearing on LinkedIn, Instagram and X.- https://x.com/WeekinHearing- https://www.instagram.com/thisweekinhearing/- https://www.linkedin.com/company/this-week-in-hearingVisit us at: https://hearinghealthmatters.org/thisweek/

सुनसान रेलवे स्टेशन In 2013, on a cold night, a female passenger vanished mysteriously after getting off the Delhi-Mathura Express at a deserted station with no signals or staff. CCTV footage showed a blurry, strange face in the station's mirror before abruptly cutting off. Hours later, her bag was found in the bus parking. Witnesses report hearing children's laughter inside the station walls at night. The station is said to be haunted, with recurring sightings of the eerie woman's half face appearing in the mirror every month on the 13th. Several women disappeared at this station on the same date. A Government Minister says he gives "every encouragement" to those working to bring about the reopening of Crusheen Railway Station. Clare County Council has already given its commitment to plans for the defunct rail stop to be reinstated, having recently announced its purchase of lands to provide a strategic landbank to be used for the station. A socio-economic analysis of the benefits of reopening the station commissioned by the local authority and published this month states it would have a commuter market of between 1,100 and 1,700 people while its 15-year employment income impact would be in excess of €25 million. Responding to a contribution by Tulla Fianna Fáil Senator Timmy Dooley on the subject in the Seanad, Fine Gael Minister of State Neale Richmond says he sees merit in the arguments being put forward by the station's champions.
After a week away in the North Yorkshire Dales recuperating, your favourite Northen One returns with part three of this autumn's deep dive into art, paintings and songs about poo. In this episode, we'll talk and learn all about how William Frith's work spawned a craze for 'representative' scenes of modern life, why the term post-modernism is adolescently arsy, pictures as 'texts' to be read, and the commercial possibilities that occur when the 'vulgar mob' (F.W. Fairholt) sees itself positively expressed in your work - which is why critics don't know what they're talking about, Oasis sold more than Blur, and the sound of the sixties wasn't Dylan but Helen Shapiro and Englebert Humperdinck. We touch on Victorian hypocrisy by noting that all ages are caught between their public faces and private actions, point out that all children are legitimate, mention Harry Clasper again, and come to the birth of the cities that still inform our view of Britain. And Mancunian exhibitionism. There's no exhibitionist like a Mancunian exhibitionist. Look up Frith's The Railway Station (1862), Many Happy Returns of The Day (1856), and For Better, For Worse (1880), George Elgar Hicks' The General Post Office, One Minute To Six (1860), and William Logsdail's The Bank and the Royal Exchange (1887). Take notes. And buy us a coffee.

An overwhelming majority of people in the Crusheen catchment area are strongly in favour of re-opening the village's defunct railway station. Repucon Consulting has launched the findings of its socio-economic appraisal of the benefits of bringing the rail stop closed to passengers since 1976 back into use. The analysis conducted on behalf of Clare County Council factored in 1,029 responses from people living in the catchment area - with 92% saying they'd “very strongly” support the station's reinstatement. Executive Director of Repucon Consulting, Mark O'Connell, says when it comes to weighing up the pros and cons of the project, “it's all on the upside”.
A campaign group that has long advocated for the reopening of the Western Rail Corridor has expressed hope that Crusheen Railway Station will come back into use sooner rather than later. It comes as the findings of an extensive investigation into the potential for the defunct railway stop to be reinstated have been presented to the public. Once a consistent component of the village's soundtrack, the sound of a train stopping in Crusheen hasn't been heard for several decades. Now however, the prospect of commuters being able to avail of rail transport in the North Clare settlement seems closer than ever. Crusheen Railway Station was first built in 1869 and served the area for over 100 years before being closed to passenger traffic in 1976, and to freight traffic in the 1990s. The line subsequently reopened in 2010, as part of the Western Corridor rail project, but the station remained closed. Hopes were reiginited in 2013 when Irish Rail secured planning permission for the station's reopening, with plans drawn up for a new 90-metre platform, but no progress was made. In March of this year, Clare County Council commissioned Repucon Consulting to undertake an independent socio-economic appraisal of the benefits of reopening the station and rail stop. As part of this effort, the local authority has purchased lands to provide a publicly-owned strategic landbank to be used for a platform, passenger bridge and any other necessary infrastructure. Executive Director of Repucon Consulting, Mark O'Connell, says the station would be a "phenomenal service for County Clare". A local resident survey taken as part of the socio-economic analysis yielded 1,244 responses, 1,029 of which were incorporated into the report, as the remaining 115 were from respondents living outside the immediate catchment area. Of those whose responses were factored into the analysis, 92% were "very strongly" in support of the station's reopening and 53% of commuters said they were "very likely" to use the local rail service. The estimated current commuter market audience for the station is between 1,100 and 1,700. Senior Planner with the Killaloe Municipal District, Brian McCarthy says the level of engagement from the general public shows how important having a railway station would be to Crusheen. The report states that reopening the station would cost roughly €4.5 million. With its 15-year employment income impact estimated at €25.5 million, the return on investment would be €5.65 for every €1 spent on bringing it back into use. Colmán Ó Raghallaigh from community-based campaign group West on Track believes in light of the evidence presented, reopening the station is an inevitability.
The Porirua Mayor said a new initiative to stop students fighting at the city centre railway station is off to a good start. Three safety officers, known as navigators, started patrolling Porirua station yesterday during peak hours, Krystal Gibbens reports.
By the time of this entry, I have been in exile for half a year and am forced to draw disappointing conclusions. I never managed to assimilate and form any working contacts. The formats of sound work in which I have worked and want to continue working are not in demand in the local context. I am actively involved in field recording, keeping a kind of sound diaries, trying to record the maximum sounding environment and myself in it. An old zoom H4N recorder, a mobile phone recorder and a cassette voice recorder are used. At the time of this recording, my partner and I (who also came to the residence but will soon return to Russia) decided to take the opportunity to visit Samarkand and Bukhara, here I am filled with hope for the therapeutic potential of this trip, inspired by the opportunity to spend time with a loved one and looking forward to the potential of sound impressions awaiting me. A new study into the positive effects of reopening Crusheen Railway Station is expected to provide evidence as to why the stop should be brought back into use. Ennis consultancy Repucon Consulting has been hired to prepare a socio-economic study of the positive effects that would arise from the reopening the North Clare rail stop which has been closed to passenger traffic since 1976. The study will involve extensive community engagement, particularly with the village's younger populatiom, and the consultancy will present a report to local representatives once it's complete. Cathaoirleach of the Killaloe Municipal District and Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony O'Brien says while most people are in favour of reopening the stop, he hopes the study will provide hard evidence as to why reopening it is a good idea.
The Transport Minister says there's unlikely to be any movement on the reopening of Crusheen Railway Station in the next five years. It comes just a week after Iarnród Éireann CEO Jim Meade told the Oireachtas Transport Committee the decommissioned station will only come back into use if the Government decides to fund it. The North Clare rail stop was closed to passenger traffic in 1976 and wasn't included in the All-Island Strategic Rail Review published during the summer despite frequent calls for its reintroduction to the national rail network. Responding to a parliamentary question from Scariff Independent TD Michael McNamara, Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan says although he'd like to see Crusheen brought back into use, projects such as the Ballysimon Train Station will take priority.
Iarnród Éireann says a government decision will outline the future of Crusheen Railway Station. The rail stop in the north Clare village has been closed to passenger traffic since 1976 despite frequent calls from politicians, activists and residents of the area for it be reopened. Census 2022 found that Crusheen has the youngest population of any town in the county with an average age of 33 while Clare has the joint-third-lowest proportion of train users nationwide. Responding to a question from Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe at the Oireachtas Transport Committee, Iarnród Éireann CEO, Cooraclare native Jim Meade says Crusheen will only see its station come back into use if the government decides to fund it.

Dent station lies on the historic Settle to Carlisle railway between Blea Moor Tunnel and Rise Hill Tunnel. It's the highest operational railway station on the National Rail network in England. The highest and we feel the best because it is so extremely wide open. So extremely exposed. Set in the North Yorkshire Dales National Park, Dent station serves at 1,150 feet above sea level, in stalwart public service. Up here is real wilderness. Rugged upland wilderness. A place that's persistently buffeted by fresh, cuffing wind. Air, that like the trains, travel free and at speed over marathon spans of mostly uninhabited land. But there is a tree, by the old wooden gate that leads onto the station platform. The tree has grown squat. Leans from the prevailing wind. Has countless myriad leaves. Waxy well weathered leaves, that the Lento mics tied to its gnarled trunk captured rustling, and jostling, in the brisk undulating breeze. And beyond these spacious rustlings, grazing sheep can sometimes be heard. And high circling buzzards. And other little birds too, through time. You can if you want choose to stand beside this tree, whilst waiting for your train. Don't worry the platform is only just there. And beside the tree you can so witness what to an urban dweller is rare. A tranquil environment woven not from silence but from affirmative sound, that inside our minds spells peace. Mental peace. A wild landscape that flows in through your ears. How everything sways. Sways this way and that. Never against. Only with you. And the ever undulating wind. * We left the Lento mics alone on the tree outside the station gate last August. It was a cool and brisk summer day. The next train back to Settle was in an hour so we walked up the fell to see what we could find. We found a remote fir forest, which sounded so good we had to go back the next day to record it. You can go to this fir forest in episode 183.

Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, and its site has been occupied since the Bronze Age. It's been a major port since the 19th century, and the Harland & Wolff shipyard built RMS Titanic here. Today, the Wellington City Council will vote on a motion calling for the organisation to withdraw from Let's Get Wellington Moving. If successful, it could be the end of the bold project, the centrepiece of which is a new light-rail system running from the Railway Station to Island Bay. Tony Randle is one of six councillors who have signed the notice of motion, calling for withdrawal from the plan - while Tamatha Paul is a staunch supporter of the programme. They joined Corin Dann.

A missile strike on a railway station packed with civilians escaping the fighting in eastern Ukraine has killed dozens of people. The mayor of Kramatorsk said 4,000 people were at the station at the time, mostly women, children and the elderly. Hundreds are reported injured. Also in the programme: we hear about the humanitarian crisis after six weeks of war in Ukraine from UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths; and we hear from Sri Lanka where the opposition has demanded a no-confidence vote after the economic crisis.
