Hello Decisive Series Subscribers,Roberto Ingram your podcast host and producer here, I'm thrilled to bring you yet another insightful conversation with a remarkable artist shaping the landscape of electronic music. Today, we have the privilege of delving into the world of Jan Kincl, a Croatian DJ, record producer, remixer, engineer, and live performer whose work has captured the attention and admiration of audiences worldwide. International media placed Jan among "the most interesting voices coming from the region", and his debut album, a deeply jazz-informed house record "In Plain Sight" recorded with a French keyboard player Regis Kattie, got described as “one of the most significant pieces of regional contemporary dance music” with support from Laurent Garnier, Derrick Carter, Alton Miller, Jazzanova, Volcov, Tony Humphries, Lefto, Claude Young, Jimpster, DJ Bone, Mark Grusane, Kai Alcé and many more.“An amazingly beautiful album! Very deep.” - Claude Young“The funk's all over this project!” - Kai Alcé“Superb deepness!” - Laurent GarnierBorn and raised in Zagreb, Jan is a product of the late 90s clubbing scene emerging in Croatia. A then-teenager, who embraced the music of the Motor City as a teacher has grown into a recognizable presence in the regional music life. Today, Jan is equally recognized for the music crafted in his Cycle studio, and life-long dedication to the art of DJing. Influenced equally by jazz and hi-tech jazz, he is devoted to a more traditional way of presenting music and feels more aligned with artists not limited by genres or eras. New, old, fast, slow, soulful, or rough. For Jan, the juxtaposition of all this is what DJing is about.Even though the majority of his work is dance music, this broad approach allowed him to operate in different scenes. Remix for a Brazilian legend Ivan Mamão Conti (Azymuth) on the legendary Far Out Recordings, remixes for a German jazz-funk band Key Elements on Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv label, a solo 12” under CVER alias on Oye Black Label, and a track on Deep Inspiration Show Records' ‘Family Things Volume 1' all came out in a period of a single year. The last project to hit 2020, though, were reinterpretations of Radojka Sverko's ‘Kud Plovi Ovaj Brod', a special 50th-anniversary re-release of a 1970 chanson classic which holds a unique place in Croatian music folklore. In 2021, Jan is continuing the string of releases for BBE Records, PDV Records, Get Physical, and Deep Inspiration Show Records. On top of that, a debut record from Cycle Records, his recently launched label, is coming out. Titled "For A Minute", a 12" features two of Jan's original versions, and two remixes from a Chicago house legend Gene Hunt.In parallel with working on his own music, Jan's had a decade-long run lecturing on the subject of ‘History of Electronic Music' at the Music & Sound department of United Pop Academy, still ongoing, and is running CYCLE - a studio, and music production company based in Zagreb.Contact us here to book Jan for a DJ show, live performance, or lecture/workshopJoin us next time for another episode of the Decisive podcast series, where we'll continue to explore the stories and sounds shaping the world of music today. Until then, stay tuned and stay inspired."

Being the co-founder of Singapore-based label Darker Than Wax and the newly opened listening bar Offtrack, Dean has been tirelessly pushing and promoting an alternative expression of lefteld music through his widely eclectic and genre-bending sets. As the main A+R and creative mind behind DTW, the label has flourished tremendously over the past 5 years, cementing its place as one of the go-to labels out of South East Asia. His musical selections, which traverses across an extensive spectrum from deep jazz to the freshest cuts have left many indelible marks on the dancefloors. A highly respected digger who is also known by many in the circuit for his extensive musical knowledge, technically astute skills, and blends, it's no surprise that he has warmed up or shared the stage with Bradley Zero, Lefto, Alex Kassian, HAAI, Pablo Valentino, Marcellus Pittman, Pearson Sound, the late Mike Huckaby and many more. ****LABEL/COLLECTIF**** Sdban ultra https://www.sdbanrecords.com/ *** INFOS *** Futuristic Brussels based four-piece ECHT! are set to release their sophomore album ‘Sink-Along' on the 5th May via the groove-obsessed Sdban Ultra label. Receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 6 Music) and Mixmag for their debut release ‘INWANE' (2021), ECHT! takes the best of Jonwayne, DJ Rashad, J Dilla, Ivy Lab, Tsuruda and Aphex Twin, resulting in an unrivalled sound. In a society geared almost exclusively toward the technological, ECHT! forges a different path, one that instead replaces the mechanical with the human. At the heart of their creative process made up of actual skin and bone, the influences of trap, bass music, jazz and hip-hop burst forth through their expert playing of instruments. ‘Sink-Along' showcases a rawer and more straight-forward approach than their debut. Whether on the bass-heavy opener 'Glide' or the beat-to-beat sounds of 'Cheesecake' and 'Bryan Brains', ECHT! confirms its taste for deep, dark beats pushed to the extreme. No one can remain indifferent. A more luminous universe is brought to the fore on the introspective ‘Vault-A' and 'Dawn In Duden' but at the core of ‘Sink-Along', the common denominator is a warm and organic groove, evident on the inventive 'Rouf-rouf' and 'Mtwk part2'. "For this album we wanted to make strong and opposite emotions coexist: a dark and intense apocalyptic tendency, and a life and dance impulse that runs through everything. A paradox that is reflected in the wordplay of the title 'Sink-Along'." Releasing their debut EP ‘DOUF' in 2019, the following year, ECHT! finished third in Red Bull Elektropedia's ‘Fresh on The Scene' category and the EP was nominated for ‘Best EP'. ECHT! released three sublime live studio sessions titled the BREWmixes in 2021, which received support from tastemakers including LEFTO, Worldwide FM and Belgian national radio station Studio Brussel (StuBru). Like many of his generation, @lefto Early Bird has gained a global following because of his radio shows. Broadcasting on the likes of Studio Brussel, Kiosk Radio and Worldwide FM from his base in Brussels, he's become a beacon of good taste whether dropping jazz, new beat, house or hip hop. He manages to make seemingly unrelated sounds make sense in the same context and is just as versatile in the DJ booths of Europe's best clubs and festivals. He plays for us at Dekmantel Selectors later this year and is sure to serve up one of his magic musical melting pots. This week's mix is just that, with a brilliantly broad selection of tracks from Sun Ra & His Arkestra, Kerri Chandler, Synkro and Kendrick Lamar just some of those he weaves in. It makes for something that manages to transport you to a sun-kissed beach, a prohibition-era speakeasy and then a boogie-fuelled dance floor in the blink of an eye. You are sure to be left wondering how on earth he does it all.

Marco Weibel is the epitome of modesty. Over the past decade, the New York artist has quietly amassed a loyal following through expansive DJ sets that touch on everything from spiritual jazz to disco, but rather than credit himself, he lets the tunes speak for themselves. This humble attitude has won him the respect of veterans such as Lefto, as well as a growing fanbase from all corners of the musical spectrum. When he's not DJing, Weibel curates nights at various New York venues and co-runs Darker Than Wax, a label based out of Singapore (where he was born and raised). His selections showcase rhythm and texture over drops, but he always has an arsenal of radiant house cuts or UK garage to fire up a crowd. Cavernous crates aside, the cadence of his sets is perhaps their most distinguishing feature. On his weekly shows at Lot Radio, Hawaiian funk is followed by broken beat while at the club, 2-step spills into dembow techno and rich amapiano. While his mixes and performances usually start out on the melodic side, his RA Podcast switches things up. Unleashing a whirlwind of jungle before moving onto '90s-flavored house and other loopy styles, his session highlights local talents with plenty of delightful transitions throughout. Peter Brown's spacey soul flows into Aquarian's pulverising breaks, Ayesha's percussive techno precedes heart-tugging house and heavy dub morphs into Kerri Chandler's acid. Fluid and rolling, this is a true digger's delight. Read more: http://ra.co/podcast/835 @marcoweibel

Welcome everyone to another episode of the Decisive Podcast Series, the first for this month of December and I hope you all are in positive spirits as we get closer to the Christmas Holidays Season 2020. Today you get a great program with a lot of interesting topic information about recording, production, studio gear, plugins, not to forget an in depth conversation about my experienced guest Jan Kincl Cycle Zagreb PDV Records, Far Out Recordings, Oye Black Label. Jan Kincl is a Zagreb-born house and techno dj, producer, live act performer, radio host and a party promoter. Through almost two decades in all this, it’s hard to scratch the surface of electronic music in Croatia without coming across something he’s been involved with. Raised by the music of Motor City, Jan’s sound is a combination of house and techno, unmistakably rooted in the more organic and soulful side of it. In recent years, Jan’s forays into jazz became deeper, and in 2016 resulted in a collaboration with a French keyboard player Regis Kattie. The pair quickly became one of the most prominent regional acts and their debut album, a deeply jazz-informed house record ’In Plain Sight’ got described as “one of the most significant pieces of regional contemporary dance music”; with Laurent Garnier, Jazzanova, Volcov, Tony Humphries, Lefto, Claude Young and Kai Alce amongst its supporters. Bside Incoming: Unidentified Flying Music This week welcomes Yoav Sa'ar, a band member of Garden City Movement, resident DJ at Tel Aviv's Romano, and father of an amazing youtube channel that goes by his own name: Unidentified Flying Music. He is a man after our own heart, having made it his vocation to bring to light a huge array of unknown music from across the world. There's many instant classics in this episode and clearly a wide range of influences. Primarily inspired by his upbringing in the middle east, but beyond that his digging through record shops from far and wide on his touring travels. He's shared turntables with some outstanding artists: Antal, Tornado Wallace, Orpheu The Wizard, Jamie Tiller, Young Marco, Lefto, and Raphael Top Secret… oooooft. And featured on the world's best digital radio stations, The Lot, Le Mellotron, Red Light, Balamii, and of course support of a more local project with Teder FM. But this week Unidentified Flying Music will step up to the Bside decks with nothing less than the very best from the flip side of his phenomenal vinyl collection. Expect many different sounds and styles but with distinct downtempo mood throughout, electro, jazz, reggae, and world music with his signature of smooth bopping beats… and the italo song about Mozarella that we never knew we needed, but we do. Be sure to give his youtube channel a follow, and browse a compilation of his favourite tracks, testament to his impeccable taste: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIrUIuD5_6PTPMvf3Kvxo-g And our very own: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVRImMx5Wu2MjALq_Uzcz0w Check Yoav's soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/ufmufmufm Thanks to Molly Hickey for the beautiful artwork as always. www.instagram.com/mollyth.art/ Follow the Bside instagram for updates/news/vinyl and general music chat - www.instagram.com/bsidepodcasts/

For instance, the big Keith Haring retrospective that was about to open when this episode was recorded and that is currently running at Bozar in Brussels until mid May 2020. They then talk about mountain biking which they both took up at a certain point in time, the hypochondriac life, documentary-making plans, curating festivals, running a record label and the difficulty of getting picked-up as an artist in a streaming world. Dominique also asks why Lefto looked a little bit bummed at the huge party celebrating his 20-year career as a radio DJ and host and of course gets an honest answer. They discuss perseverance, the trials and tribulations of running your own label in a conglomerate world, how the fashion system is stealing from the culture, favourite artists, DJ-sets and sneakers of 2019, including Lefto's own dream collaboration.

Establishing a collage of influence and musical intuition is no simple feat, it can take time for an artist to establish and forge an identity which is unique and representative of their own character. Adriaan De Roover is a Belgian experimental musician who has just released a new album called 'Leaves'. The album is a freeform piece of work which layers instrumentation and soundscapes in an abstract and yet enchanting manner. It's described as being a piece of work which balances both "peace and restlessness". Perhaps better known under the guise of Oaktree his music has previously been championed and supported by the likes of Bonobo, Mary Anne Hobbs and Lefto. His sound is diverse and draws upon elements of the fourth world, establishing comparisons with new age musicians and the likes of Jon Hassell and Brian Eno. Adriaan describes his new album as follows: “‘Leaves’ was written between 2016 and 2018, mainly in a cabanage in the Ardennes, in solitude and around nature. Although there are some outward moments, I tried to make music that finds as much beauty in small gestures, in doubt and in honesty (above all). I hope you can get lost in it, just like I did, and maybe then, some moments of beauty might reveal themselves.” We invited him to record a mix which showcases the diversity of his own musical personality, his take on sound and sculpture. He picks tracks by the likes of Bloc Party, Rosalia, Photek, Nicolas Jaar, Alice Coltrane and Anenon.

Tastemaker, selector, curator or “your favourite DJ's favourite DJ” is how Lefto is most often described. Each of those descriptions is nothing if not accurate, and Lefto is one of the few who have indisputably earned those titles. The Belgian DJ and producer is one of the most important tastemakers around the world – perhaps his record collection, over 15,000-strong, has something to do with it – and also one of the most respected. One only has to listen to one of his sets (like his mix for Wild City below) to see why. Firmly rooted in jazz and hip-hop, Lefto cultivated his digging sensibilities while working at Belgium's legendary Music Mania record store in his hometown Brussels. A resident on Belgium's leading radio station Studio Brussel since the 90s, Lefto has been a custodian of sorts for new music, and is always one to look ahead and actively seek out new music from all over the world. Lefto is renowned for his wonderfully eclectic sets – different each time – which seamlessly switch between hip-hop, funk, jazz, house, tropical, future bass, African rhythms and more. His mix for Wild City is no different. Featuring a balance of known and obscure artists from all over the world, with selections from artists like Noname, Kamaal Williams, Kaidi Tatham, Moses Boyd, Joy Orbison and more, the stimulating set starts off with rap and hip-hop, before taking you all over the spectrum, from jazz, tropical and Irish rock to disco, African rhythms and house. It might sound chaotic and haphazard to jump around genres like this, but Lefto switches between sounds and tracks so smoothly whilst maintaining a breezy atmosphere throughout.
