For six years, the **Blend LA Podcast** has been a space where House music legends, pioneers, and rising stars come together to share their journeys. From **Chicago to South Africa, London to LA**, we've uncovered untold stories, explored the spiritual and cultural depth of House, and celebrated the global impact of this movement.   We've had the honor of sitting down with **iconic DJs and producers** like Tony Soul, Gene Hunt, Robert Owens, Lady Alma, Jesse Saunders, Wayne Williams, Vince Lawrence, Ultra Naté, Keith Thompson, and so many others who have shaped the sound and spirit of House music. We've connected with trailblazers like Lori Branch, one of the first female DJs in Chicago, and embraced the international energy of artists like Swazi Sunshine, Apiwe Bubu, DJ G, Roxcizzle, Yah Appiah, and Carlos Mena. We've talked about the roots of House, the culture it has built, and how it continues to thrive across generations and borders.   Of course, no episode would be complete without **The Catch-Up**—our candid, raw, and always entertaining commentary. Whether we're cracking jokes, breaking down House culture, or diving into deeper topics, the energy between the hosts keeps it all real.   As we celebrate this milestone, we recognize that **House music is more important now than ever**. In today's political climate—where attacks on **Black culture, LGBTQ+ communities, and artistic expression** are on the rise—House music remains a **sanctuary of freedom, love, and resistance**. Born from **Black, queer, and underground communities**, this genre has always been a voice for the marginalized, a space for unity, and a soundtrack for liberation.   We also honor **Black History Month** by paying tribute to the pioneers who laid the foundation for House music, ensuring that their legacy continues to inspire future generations. And we're amplifying **Albius' challenge** to all DJs: **Play with intention.** Every beat, every set, every mix should carry purpose, because House is more than music—it's a movement.   And to top it all off, **AMP Collective brings the heat with a soulful House set to celebrate six years of Housing**—a proper way to mark this milestone with deep, uplifting vibes.   So join us as we reflect on the past six years, share behind-the-scenes moments, and look ahead to the future of House music and the Blend LA Podcast. This celebration is for **you**—our listeners, our community, our family.

Hello Decisive Series Subscribers,Roberto Ingram your podcast host and producer here, I'm thrilled to bring you yet another insightful conversation with a remarkable artist shaping the landscape of electronic music. Today, we have the privilege of delving into the world of Jan Kincl, a Croatian DJ, record producer, remixer, engineer, and live performer whose work has captured the attention and admiration of audiences worldwide. International media placed Jan among "the most interesting voices coming from the region", and his debut album, a deeply jazz-informed house record "In Plain Sight" recorded with a French keyboard player Regis Kattie, got described as “one of the most significant pieces of regional contemporary dance music” with support from Laurent Garnier, Derrick Carter, Alton Miller, Jazzanova, Volcov, Tony Humphries, Lefto, Claude Young, Jimpster, DJ Bone, Mark Grusane, Kai Alcé and many more.“An amazingly beautiful album! Very deep.” - Claude Young“The funk's all over this project!” - Kai Alcé“Superb deepness!” - Laurent GarnierBorn and raised in Zagreb, Jan is a product of the late 90s clubbing scene emerging in Croatia. A then-teenager, who embraced the music of the Motor City as a teacher has grown into a recognizable presence in the regional music life. Today, Jan is equally recognized for the music crafted in his Cycle studio, and life-long dedication to the art of DJing. Influenced equally by jazz and hi-tech jazz, he is devoted to a more traditional way of presenting music and feels more aligned with artists not limited by genres or eras. New, old, fast, slow, soulful, or rough. For Jan, the juxtaposition of all this is what DJing is about.Even though the majority of his work is dance music, this broad approach allowed him to operate in different scenes. Remix for a Brazilian legend Ivan Mamão Conti (Azymuth) on the legendary Far Out Recordings, remixes for a German jazz-funk band Key Elements on Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv label, a solo 12” under CVER alias on Oye Black Label, and a track on Deep Inspiration Show Records' ‘Family Things Volume 1' all came out in a period of a single year. The last project to hit 2020, though, were reinterpretations of Radojka Sverko's ‘Kud Plovi Ovaj Brod', a special 50th-anniversary re-release of a 1970 chanson classic which holds a unique place in Croatian music folklore. In 2021, Jan is continuing the string of releases for BBE Records, PDV Records, Get Physical, and Deep Inspiration Show Records. On top of that, a debut record from Cycle Records, his recently launched label, is coming out. Titled "For A Minute", a 12" features two of Jan's original versions, and two remixes from a Chicago house legend Gene Hunt.In parallel with working on his own music, Jan's had a decade-long run lecturing on the subject of ‘History of Electronic Music' at the Music & Sound department of United Pop Academy, still ongoing, and is running CYCLE - a studio, and music production company based in Zagreb.Contact us here to book Jan for a DJ show, live performance, or lecture/workshopJoin us next time for another episode of the Decisive podcast series, where we'll continue to explore the stories and sounds shaping the world of music today. Until then, stay tuned and stay inspired."

Jack and Yair kick off an exciting series of RP2023 with a detailed dissection of the British TV dramas Life On Mars (2006-7) and its spinoff/sequel series Ashes To Ashes (2008-10), and their iconic "Clarkson but it's ok because he's not real" antihero Gene Hunt. We talk about how the shows contrast the rough and rowdy days of the '70s and '80s with the sort of radical leftist woke culture of the late Tony Blair era, and how they pointed the way towards David Cameron's straight-talking, honest 2010s. Along the way, we check in on the American and Russian remakes and assess what they got right and wrong (shocker, we come out more pro-Russia on this.)

Bside Incoming: Gene Hunt This man should need no introduction... he's one of Chicago's finest, which, let's be honest is saying something and it's no exaggeration to say that he is a legendary icon and pioneer of house music… Gene Hunt. With a fashion designer for a mother, one grandfather being a jazz musician, and the other a DJ, Gene certainly has creativity flowing through his veins. So, from the age of thirteen he pursued his passion for music by taking to the decks, and only a few years later he was already rising through the ranks of Chicago's thriving underground House scene. It was none other than Li'l Louis who gave him his first shot at the legendary Warehouse club, with strong support from Frankie Knuckles, while it was Ron Hardy that really took him under his wing. With constant pressure from the three kings of Chicago it wasn't long before the apprentice became a master of his craft, and cemented himself as a pillar of the scene at Warehouse/Music Box. The club attributed to the creation of House music and the space that would help define the hedonistic escapism of dance music across the world. The enchanting music of Gene and Ron at Music Box inspired a generation in Chicago, not least Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson who brought them Strings of Life in 1987. After a short Hip-Hop hiatus in California producing rap music with Bone Thugs N Harmony and Snoop Dogg, he returned to House music to nourish the fresh wave of talented artists and continue his legacy through DJing and an ever growing love of music production. Few have done more in the service of dance music, so it is such a privilege to have an insight into the record collection of a true great. His personal favourites, and most cherished records… His hottest ‘jams', ‘some real uncut Marvin Gaye', and a ‘seriously rare' Yoko Ono dub plate. Check out Gene's website here - https://www.mrgenehunt.com/ Thanks to Molly Hickey for the beautiful artwork as always. www.instagram.com/mollyth.art/ Follow the Bside instagram for updates/news/vinyl and general music chat - www.instagram.com/bsidepodcasts/

The Classic Music Company presents Business As Usual

In 2008 I started a series of radio shows with fellow Freak and host, Jonny Rock. The original format was based around vinyl. Digital started to creep in, then CD's, then YouTube rips, and so on. But the idea remained the same, that we were sharing our discoveries with an audience. Fast forwarding a couple of years and expanding on the original concept, I will once again be playing dance music that you may or may not have heard, but this time said music will be readily available, if pointed in the right direction of course. The idea is for you to use me as your selector slash shop assistant in a virtual record store. Not only will I be shouting about both old and new music, but I will also be following it up with a series of compilations to be released on my label, Classic throughout the year. I will be your slightly odd, slightly off-centre, guide. But ultimately and most importantly, your friendly on-line record shop assistant. Business As Usual: May Tracklisting 01. This mix was created spontaneously, using tracks from some true masters of House including Nick Holder, DJ Deep, Rob Mello, Gene Hunt, Atjazz, Move D and others. I liked how at the end all tracks fitted together to make something I was happy to listen back to myself, but until now it has remained unpublished. Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords Slowburn on Facebook: www.facebook.com/pages/Slowburn/167730576584402 @slow_burn Slowburn are Phillip Long and David Hargadon, an Irish duo with an analogue sound palette that extends all the way to vintage Chicago, Detroit and New York planes. Much like their alias suggests, the pair are on a measured but magical rise through the underground ranks, and have been since meeting in the booth a few years ago. First introduced to one another in Dublin (at a night where Phil was warming up for Dave), they soon realised their shared plenty of common musical ground, and since then they’ve been churning out an impressive array of productions with considerable success. Lakuti’s much-revered Uzuri label soon came calling, eventually playing host to Slowburn’s rich and varied sound alongside scene luminaries such as Chicago Skyway, Juju & Jordash and Ksoul & Muteoscillator. A string of releases followed soon after, as the boys followed up on their auspicious start with releases for the likes of Lunar Disko, Apartment,Elecktrosouls, Austere and Appian Sounds as well as on a compilation for the always on-point Grounded in Humanity imprint where they appeared alongside Trax legend, Gene Hunt. “When we make music, we just try and capture the mood at that moment,” say the pair. “We never set out to make anything in particular and we just jam and take things as they come. I guess we usually try to have a strong sense of melody with our pads and always try to and keep a good flow.” When working together in the DJ booth, Slowburn also share a fine understanding of dancefloor dynamics and infectious groove, and have brought their intricate sounds to a host of seminal Irish festivals as well as Manchester’s DEAF Institute. Always joining the dots between the old and the new, Slowburn are a duo with a deep understanding of the discerning side of house and techno. As bright has been their journey to date, Slowburn are only really getting started. A genuinely impressive proposition for fans of connoisseur house sounds, you can expect to hear much more from them over the next few months. [I]t's official: Julius the Mad Thinker will be performing in Manila on Saturday, January 28 at TIME.  In our opinion, this is the year's "must-see" event. Few DJs have an effect on an audience the way Julius the Mad Thinker does.  I first heard about Julius when I ran across his name in 2004 on the site UndagroundArchives.com, the authoritative guide to New York City's house music scene (today no longer operational), run by Donna Ward (a.k.a. Fotochick). The site hosted the annual Choice Awards celebrating the scene's top players, from artists, DJs, and producers, to clubs, record labels, events, and reporters. That year, Julius had been recognized as Best Emerging Talent, and Donna wrote about a great interview she had with him and described him as smart and mature. The following year, I was invited to attend the 4th Choice Awards in NYC. Everyone who was anyone was there: Danny Krivit, Quentin Harris, Jovonn, Kevin Hedge and Josh Milan (Blaze), Lisa Shaw, Anane, Stephanie Cook, Jada, and Andre Harris, to name a few.  Awardees included Louie Vega, 718 Sessions, Deep House Page, Shelter, Roots, Bruce Tatum (Time Out NY), Cordell Mcclary.  I was invited to present the award for Best DJ International, and the winner was Jojo Flores for the 4th year in a row (someone I had just met in Manila the year prior in 2004).  Jojo was in South Africa at the time and his buddy E-Man accepted the award on his behalf (someone I met along with Jojo here).  To say that being on stage in front of all these stars--I had only read about up until that point--was surreal would be the understatement of the year! Julius may very well have been in the crowd that night. In 2009, I was going to visit Chicago for the first time with Ines--who had lived there before I met her, and a DJ friend Joe DiPadova, who was going out with Ines' best friend years ago, recommended that I look up Julius once there. Joe was at the time living in Montreal and working with Jojo Flores. I remembered that Jojo was at the time the Montreal resident of a group of DJs called 3Degrees Global, a group co-founded by Julius the Mad Thinker 10-years ago.  Once in Chi-town, I reached out to Julius and he recommended we meet at Evilolive (a palindrome). We finally met and he introduced us to Jamie326, Gene Hunt, and many of the people organizing that after-hour industry night. How's THAT for 3 degrees of separation?! The next time we saw Julius was in Manila about a month later.  It was a bit of a surprise and his first time there. He came to attend a friend's wedding along with Tiesto. We hung out for about a week and got to know him much better. He came to our night at the Mandarin Oriental MUSIC & WINE, we took him to M Cafe, and he performed at Embassy on his last night. He even recorded a mix at my place that he ended up featuring on [MUSIC & WINE Radio]. (You can scroll down to find it.)   Julius recording the mix "Traffic" at my Makati City pad.  Also seen dancing, Channel St Claire Julius invited us to participate in the 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami (me as DJ and Ines as co-host) at the Mi Casa pool-party opening the annual conference.  It's amazing how many people in the global house scene we met in the matter of a few days.  We have been trying to find the right time ever since to bring Julius back to Manila.  Well, the stars are finally aligned and Julius will at long last be back in town to perform, this time at the city's number one dance club TIME.    The Mi Casa pool-party at WMC 2010. Elian Habayeb, Julius the Mad Thinker, Zepherin Saint (Tribe), ALA (Dive San Diego), Hallex M (United Music), Keith Evan (House Society), and Nathan Adams (Tribe). With the hopes of adding the Philippines to his roster, Julius, along with hundreds of music enthusiasts are preparing for the incredibly explosive 4th annual Mi Casa Es Su Casa Holiday season to start March at the WMC 2012 in Miami and ending October 4-7 in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. This is the Thinker's annual birthday celebration, not yet published on his Soundcloud page. It's titled Celebrate and it's a real banger.
