The Open Data Policy Lab, a collaboration between The GovLab and Microsoft, launched the New Commons Challenge initiative to advance the responsible re-use of data for AI-driven solutions that enhance local decision-making and humanitarian response. The Challenge will award two winning institutions $100,000 each to develop data commons that fuel responsible AI innovation in these critical areas. The Challenge builds on the Open Data Policy Lab's recent report, “Blueprint to Unlock New Data Commons for AI,” which advocates for creating collaboratively governed data ecosystems that support responsible AI development. The Challenge is backed by leading institutions committed to ethical AI and open data. Partners include Direct Relief / CrisisReady, and Harvard Law School Library, and UNESCO as international observer, which will provide subject-matter expertise and evaluation support. Stefaan, Andrew and Brent discuss the New Commons Challenges in detail and touch on data commons for AI, disaster relief and local decision making, AI governance, data sharing architectures and data re-use, advances in artificial intelligence and human-AI interaction, and the intersection of collective intelligence and artificial intelligence.

Te gast in aflevering 25 van de Motorrijder Podcast: Heikki Sermon, in een vorig leven vertegenwoordiger voor KTM, nu directeur van Mettet Experiences en van de Belgian Motorcycle Academy.   Het circuit van Mettet heeft reden om te feesten, want dit jaar blazen ze daar honderd kaarsjes uit. Bij KTM hebben ze helaas veel minder reden om te feesten, iedereen weet ondertussen wel hoe hoog het water in Mattighofen staat.   Samen met Stefaan en Bart loopt Heikki door de geschiedenis van het circuit van Mettet, laat hij zijn licht schijnen op de jonge talenten die volop groeikansen krijgen in de Belgian Motorcycle Academy, hij kiest zijn favoriete motor uit de (vers van de pers!) Koopgids 2025 … en laat ook in zijn ziel kijken als het over KTM gaat.   Uiteraard komen motoren aan bod die we recent getest hebben; met name de Honda Transalp, de Honda NC750X en de Kawasaki Z900. Podcast nummer 24 is nog eens een onvervalste thuismatch, maar wel met een nieuwe spits! Vaste waarden Stefaan en Bart krijgen immers bijstand van kersvers redactielid Tom Van Appeldoorn.   Tom gaat voor Motorrijder en KicXstart werken en heeft vanuit zijn ervaring bij de Koninklijke Nederlandse Motorrijders Vereniging (KNMV) een prima zicht op wat reilt en zeilt in de Nederlandse motorscene. Dat er in één Nederlandse gemeente meer motorcrossterreinen liggen dan in heel België samen, snijdt Stefaan en Bart toch eventjes de adem af.   Gelukkig niet voor lang, want er valt ook in deze eindejaarsperiode meer dan genoeg te vertellen. Stefaan geeft tekst en uitleg bij zijn Marokkaans enduro-avontuur met de kornuiten van Cabra Ventura en jammer genoeg moeten we het ook wel eventjes over de malaise bij KTM hebben, een drama in meerdere bedrijven dat richting zijn ontknoping hobbelt.   We zetten een boompje op over de Honda CB1000 Hornet en waarom de Hornet in de voorbije decennia uitgroeide tot een instituut, Bart legt uit waarom de Benda LFC700 waarmee hij aan de rol ging meer dan vermoedelijk niet zal uitgroeien tot zo'n instituut.   Finaal moet Stefaan nog even met de billen bloot want in de vorige podcast sloeg hij de bal mis. We zijn actief in de volgende sectoren: automotive, retail en finance en insurances. We merken hoe belangrijk beleving en ervaring zijn. In die verschillende sectoren merk je of iemand het verschil maakt of niet.”   “Kijk je naar de verschillen tussen Nederland en België, dan zie je dat 90/95% hetzelfde is, logisch ook, autofabrikanten werken graag met standaarden. Hoe belangrijk is de testrit voor de klant en de follow up, dat meten we. En eigenlijk kun je zeggen dat geen echt verschil is tussen de Belgische en Nederlandse automotive klant. Ze vinden het belangrijk dat je een fijn persoon bent, die snel en efficiënt de informatie verstrekt. De telefonische bereikbaarheid van een dealerbedrijf is belangrijk. Klanten verwachten dat er snel wordt opgenomen, dat er iemand aan de lijn komt waarmee je verder kunt gaan. Dat geldt ook voor mails: efficiënt en snel antwoorden is belangrijk.”   “Het is bewezen in verschillende studies dat het belangrijk is om binnen het uur je klant terug te bellen. Hij is dan vaak nog bereikbaar en alles is nog fris. Hoe sneller hoe beter. Maar je moet ook de juiste middenweg vinden tussen wat praktisch en organisatorisch haalbaar is. Het gaat over customer excellence en customer excellence is ook teamspirit, effectief jouw organisatie en structuur voorbereiden.  Wat opvalt is dat veel gesprekken te vaak te vrijblijvend zijn naar warme leads toe. De deur gaat open, gebruik die deur ook, we laten kansen liggen. Hoe ga je om met de mail of het gesprek. Ik zie veel adviseurs terugmailen. Is het niet efficiënter en interessanter om juist terug te bellen? Op een commercieel, service gerichte manier leads opvlogen, dat is belangrijk. In alle landen waar wij werken zie je hetzelfde: het is vaak te vrijblijvend.”   We hebben de laatste maanden klantbelevingsbezoeken voor verschillende merken, dealergroepen en in verschillende landen uitgevoerd. Het doel was om te bepalen wat de huidige beleving is van de klanten en waar zien we nog groeikansen? Dat is het allerbelangrijkste: zijn er nog groeikansen vandaag? En die zijn er, houdt de klant die interesse heeft, bouw een relatie op, dat begint al bij de lead. Hoe kwalitatief is het opvolgen van de lead, wat is de beleving voor de klant en hoe creëer je het wow-gevoel? Dat kun je door effectief te harmoniseren ten opzichte van de klant. In de behoefteanalyse, de presentatie van het voertuig, de proefrit.  Als ik een proefrit doe, verwacht ik in een mooie, schone auto. De praktijk blijkt vaak anders.” “Onze mystery shopper heeft een aanvraag via website en telefoon gedaan en is langs geweest op de dag zelf. Heb je de mogelijkheid om de klant meteen te helpen zodat hij niet hoeft terug te komen? Onze onderzoeken zijn toegespitst op Nederland en België apart, wel met de standaardvragenlijst. Bij bepaalde merken zie je heel goed waar de groeikansen liggen, die moet je gaan gebruiken. Op het DCDW-evenement zullen we de resultaten van ons onderzoek presenteren. Je hebt maar eenmaal een warme kans, die moet je benutten door de basis correct te doen.  Ik had geen verwachtingen welk merk het goed of slecht zou doen. Je hebt in beide landen dezelfde merken, producten en prijs, wat maakt het verschil? De mens.  Op het evenement mag je van ons verwachten dat we resultaten van andere landen naast België en Nederland delen en we komen met heel praktische tips. Ik doe de presentatie gedurende de dag, nadien kan iedereen de presentatie per mail aanvragen.”   “Als je kijkt naar het dealermodel en agentuurmodel, dan komen we eigenlijk terug op heel veel zaken die al bestaan en waar we het al vaak over hebben gehad. Je moet er dagelijks aan werken, zaken levend houden., Daar ligt de challenge voor ons allemaal. Met veel plezier kom ik graag vertellen wat we doen. We werken met 16 merken samen, en hebben een mooie expertise om te delen.”

He has worked in a consulting and advisory capacity for the World Bank, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and World Food Programme (WFP), as well as being a member of the health data experts committee for Meta (formerly Facebook). Het begon al met Bart die twee minuten ‘zaagtijd' vroeg, waarna Stefaan gelukkig het tij kon keren met wat positief nieuws uit de motorbranche.   De verkiezing van de Droommotor van het Jaar was het volgende twistpunt en ook over de meest overroepen motoren uit de geschiedenis geraakten de twee het niet eens. Geïnspireerd door de technische fiches van de BMW M 1000 XR en de Triumph Rocket 3 Storm – waarover je meer kunt lezen in het aprilnummer van Motorrijder – ging het over de meest ‘over the top' motoren waarmee het Motorrijder-duo ooit reed en guess what, alweer waren Bart en Stefaan het niet eens.   Toen het over de overname van het MotoGP-circus door Liberty Media ging hadden de twee de neuzen wel in dezelfde richting staan, net zoals ze er allebei rotsvast van overtuigd zijn dat Ghent Motor Event op 21 april een übercool evenement wordt.   Naar goede gewoonte kan het halfuur motorgeklets rekenen op de gewaardeerde steun van Richa, Shoei, Michelin en BMW Motorrad.

Yes, Stefaan went from a 3h53 to a 2h59 marathon in 18 months.   But what inspires me the most is the peace and confidence he radiated before he toed the starting line in Rotterdam last month.   18 months ago, Stefaan would've been worrying about each split and anxiously forcing his race when things didn't go according to plan.   Last month, he was hardly concerned about the outcome, knowing he was just there to give it his all. Perhaps it was enough to hit the goal. And perhaps it wasn't.   He simply fearlessly committed to something he cared about.   I wanted to get Stefaan on the podcast because it requires courage to trust the power of letting go. So you can imagine my delight then when I came across a book on workplace curiosity written by Stefaan van Hooydonk, the founder of The Global Curiosity Institute, who is my guest this week. Stefaan van Hooydonk is the founder of the Global Curiosity Institute and author of the bestselling book: The Workplace Curiosity Manifesto. After working initially in investment consulting and setting up executive education at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in China, Van Hooydonk held executive roles as Chief Learning Officer in fortune 200 companies (Nokia, Royal Philips, Cognizant, Saudi Aramco, Agfa, Flipkart). He has lived and worked in Belgium, France, Hong Kong, China, Finland, The Netherlands, India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom. His last role was that of Chief Learning Officer for Cognizant, where he oversaw learning and development for over 300k associates across the globe. Stefaan van Hooydonk researches the topic of workplace curiosity in companies. He believes that curious individuals need curious environments to thrive and that especially in times of turmoil individuals and companies need to embrace intentional curiosity.
