Abrahm Lincoln is unquestionably one the most revered presidents who ever led our nation. But in all the accolades that he rightfully receives there is rarely a mention of his personal faith. On In The Market with Janet Parshall this week we spoke with a man who opened up Lincoln’s personal history to explained how important his walk with God was to not only his life but how it became vitally important as he led our nation through the devastating years of Civil War. Not only is alcoholism a highly addictive struggle for many people, it also comes with a loads of shame for those who struggle. We spoke to a woman who has walked that difficult path herself and share the impactful lessons she learned along the way. We punched your radio ticket for another flight down under as we spent a little quality time with our favorite Scottish apologist who shared more stories of the challenges facing believers around the world today, including the latest on two Muslim nurses in very hot water for their statements about killing jews in the hospital, how free speech is increasingly in dangers in the U.K. and why a British journalist says that the Hamas captives were treated very well. Is there such thing as a “gay Christian” or “LGBT + Christians”? One of the friends of this program is a man on the front lines of the sexual confusion that is permeating our society today. He addressed the language that is being used to justify sexual identities that go directly against God’s prescribed mandate for human sexual identity. He explained the dangers of using these terms and what doing so really says to others. The news never stops and neither does our need to see it clearly. We invite you once again to another examination of the headlines of the week through the lens of scripture. Is it a good idea to use language like “gay Christians,” “sexual minorities,” and “LGBT+ Christians” or does it confuse the issue of biblical sexuality with identity? This episode lands at a crucial point of religiopolitical history, as we talk about all things New Apostolic Reformation. Academic Jon Sawyer joins me as we talk about some juicy, heavy hitting topics - conspiratorial demonology, weaponisation of testimony culture, self-invisible LGBT Christians, sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts, load language inside Evangelicalism, white supremacy and indoctrination techniques used in Christian Nationalism. I mean...that about covers whats wrong in the world, doesn't it?  You really should look at the rest of Jon's work at https://www.jonsawyer.org/ and of course his contribution to Dr Lucas Wilsons, book "Shame Sex Attraction." (Find it here https://amzn.asia/d/5Et3wfT)  Its a vital time in history to be informed, especially if you are in a Westernised nation where the backlash against progress, and the decrying of "Wokeism" (ie. Empathy and respect for others) threatens a Christian Nationalist uprising masked as resurging religiopolitial conservatism. This episode, Blake Chastains episode (and book), and Lukes episode (and book) need to be top of your to-listen lists. And I'm not often demanding like that.

What does it mean to be a gay Christian in a country where many Church leaders say your sexuality is wicked and even demonic? In 2013, a group of LGBT Christians in Kenya started meeting for Sunday worship, to practice their faith free from homophobia. The community grew and became Kenya's first openly queer-affirming Church - a sanctuary for diverse believers who feel excluded from mainstream religious spaces. But with calls for new laws to further curtail the rights of LGBT Kenyans, and increasingly open homophobia and anti-gay protests, this sanctuary may be in jeopardy. While some members consider returning to the closet, others are determined to protect their sacred space, come what may.

This week, Paul and Dominic interview Eve Tushnet about her wonderful book, “Tenderness: A Gay Christian's Guide to Unlearning Rejection and Experiencing God's Extravagant Love.” Our discussion had two key themes. The first is that gay men and women are, in fact, relentlessly and tenderly loved by God and have a place in the Church. The second is that gay folks often experience harm in the Church ranging from outright discrimination and bullying to casual spiritual abuse. And, as Eve points out, those experiences are an “anti-catechesis” that proclaims that God is more like an abusive boyfriend than a loving father. A quick note, Eve was recovering from pneumonia when we recorded this episode, so please excuse what she called her Darth Vadar voice.  Eve Tushnet is a freelance writer, a Patheos blogger, and the award-winning author of Gay and Catholic. She also has written two novels, is the editor of the anthology Christ's Body, Christ's Wounds, and has contributed to several books, including Sex and the Spiritual Life. Tushnet has written on the paths of love available to gay Christians for a wide range of publications, including America, American Conservative, Commonweal, and Christianity Today, and online for Atlantic, New York Times, and Washington Post. She has spoken at multiple conferences for LGBT Christians. She also writes and speaks on the arts. Tushnet lives in Washington, DC. You guys, the way you’ve been reaching out lately has been my fuel! It’s been quite the year, and we all need places where we can talk about the real stuff. You have an entire abundance of potential and goodness that you bring to the world, and whether your world feels really small or really overwhelming right now, I love that I get to help you move forward in it. So today, I answer two (very!) different listener questions: “As a young leader, how do I process the criticism I receive about my public work?” and “How do I share the truth of God with my loved one who is living in sin, without judging, condemning or shrinking in fear, due to the controversial nature of homosexuality in our culture?” It’s a rich conversation that I think so many listeners will benefit from as we chat about the heart issues behind the questions. Keep them coming! If there’s a question that’s been on your heart, shoot it over to me at nicole@nicoleunice.com and I might just answer it on an upcoming episode. We’re in this together!

In this episode, Isaac and Dan take the plunge into the incredibly sticky topic of LGBT inclusion in the life of the church. Specifically, they take a look at two very different statements, one from the ACNA bishops and one from The Black Trans Prayer Book, and consider how both of them in their own unique ways end up being not only insufficiently theological, but also incredibly inhumane. As the first "gay" episode of The Uncommonplace, the selected libation is a round of Manhattans. Spirit: Manhattans | 03:25Main Segment: "Sexuality and Identity" & #TransPeopleAreDivine | 08:18https://theblacktransprayerbook.org/https://anglican.ink/2021/01/20/sexuality-and-identity-a-pastoral-statement-from-the-college-of-bishops/

In his book Changing our Minds, Gushee writes that he had been wrong to adhere to the traditional Christian sexual ethic. Now, he advocates not just for gay marriage, but full inclusion of LGBT Christians in all aspects available to heterosexual members, from adoption to teaching Sunday school to pastoring a church. Ozanne outlines clear evidence of the harm that certain teachings have caused the LGBT community and what can be done to address this major safeguarding issue affecting young LGBT Christian teenagers today. The harmful effects of prejudice and discrimination on the LGBTI community have been acknowledged for some time by the medical professions, however few have been able to provide evidence of the role that religion can play in fuelling this. Jayne Ozanne is a well-known gay evangelical who works to ensure full inclusion of all LGBTI Christians at every level of the Church. She is Director of the Ozanne Foundation, which works with religious organisations around the world to eliminate discrimination based on sexuality or gender in order to embrace and celebrate the equality and diversity of all.
