I am grateful for you. I am a 41-year-old male with a history of severe mental health and skin issues dating back to early in life. I was discharged from my dream career in the military due to mental health issues. Candida diets, fasts, paleo, and other approaches helped me with my skin but never with mental health. After a mental breakdown the day of a planned wedding in 2021, I left my home in Georgia and spent a month in a cabin in Idaho to focus on a carnivore diet and tai chi to see if I could make progress mentally. I did. I made advances that I never thought possible. Since then I married the woman I fled and have come close to conquering life-long OCD and anxiety. Nonetheless, depression persists at times, especially when I try to eliminate coffee. After trying the lion diet while following one carnivore advocate, I developed a new severe cystic acne response that remains months later. To my family's delight, I have become more open to the idea that carnivore is not the end-all-be-all. I find myself wrestling with an identity crisis related to this matter as I thought carnivore saved me. I also now find myself disappointed with carnivore fanatics, one in particular who would shame me for eating a single blueberry. Today, as I add things like fruit, nuts, and veggies back into my diet, I feel fine. Did I convince myself carnivore was doing the work or was it just what my body needed for some period of time? Is it a matter of time before mental health issues come raging back due to increased exposure to plant material? I feel more lost than ever with regards to my health despite feeling better than ever. All of the dogma is hard to understand. This is where I so appreciate you both for your willingness to approach everyone individually on the n=1 basis. Thanks! Carter   IF and blood glucose levels, Pre diabetes Alan says: I'm so glad you're doing this show! Background: 68yrs 5'7” 157lbs. Eat very few processed carbs, have 5-7ish spirits a week Life long athlete. I've been doing daily IF for about 3 years, previously with a 12hr feeding widow. Now I've shortened that window to 10hrs often less than 8hrs. However my blood glucose levels seem to always hover over 100. Am I “pre-diabetic”. What other tests might I try and are there any other Lifestyle factors I can play with?   My wife's digestion needs urgent help Kyle says: Hi Robb and Nicki, Long time listener of the podcast! I'm reaching out today in desperation for my wife. About a year ago, my wife started having SEVERE constipation and bloating. Last March we went to the E.R. for the first time because the pain from her stomach/intestinal region was a 9/10. They did some scans and said she was severely backed up, and told her to just eat a bunch of fiber and take Mira lax and sent her on her way. Super helpful, thank you sick care system. Over the past year it's gotten progressively worse, and we've tried multiple diets to try and get this under control, from low-FODMAP to strict carnivore, and nothing seems to help. Prior to all this starting, she was very fit, worked out 5 days a week and movement was her life. She ate a pretty healthy diet for the most part - fruits, veggies and meats made up most of her diet, with some protein bars and powders mixed in too. This last year, she's lost 15 pounds on an already slim, athletic frame that didn't have much room to lose. No matter how she eats, she gets incredibly bloated with sharp pains in her stomach/intestines and has to give herself multiple enemas each day to try and get things moving, sometimes with no luck. Within the last week, we've finally had an endoscopy and colonoscopy. The endoscopy found a small hiatal hernia, and some white spots in her esophagus that they are testing for candida. Her doctor says GHD hiatal hernia is too small to be causing her symptoms and doesn't require surgery. In the colonoscopy, they found a small polyp, an ulcer they're doing a biopsy on, hemorrhoids, and said she has a tortuous (redundant) colon. They ruled out cancer, which was actually was bad news to her, because she wanted something that could be treated at least. They prescribed Linzess and she just started the first day to help get the constipation under control. She doesn't have much hope it's going to work though and I can't say I blame her after all she's been through the past year. Besides the physical pain, which is more than anyone should have to bear, it's taking its toll on her mental health as well. She doesn't want to be alive anymore. She can't do the things she enjoyed previously, she can barely eat without becoming nauseated or throwing up, and she just doesn't see the point in living anymore. We're doing what we can on the mental health front with professionals, but I fear it won't get any better until her body is normal again. We really have no idea where to turn anymore. Her massage therapist thinks it could be related to a tight muscle in her low back that needs myofascial unwinding. We have an appointment this Friday to get that worked on. My wife says when she presses on that muscle in her low back, she can feel pain through her pelvic region. Is there any way a muscle could be constricting her bowels? I'm not sure what else to say, I'm sure there's plenty more info you need from me, so let me know what would help. We'd really appreciate any ideas you might have - if you knew a loved one in this situation, what would you tell them? We both appreciate you and all the work you do for the Rebellion. I’m in a book discussion group with a client and two of his friends. The only problem is, both of his friends are also podcasters, so you can imagine how hard it is to get a word in edgewise. The book we were discussing last time was Jonathan Haidt’s A Righteous Mind. This is an especially important book because it offers some concrete ways to bridge the big political divide going on in America and really much of the rest of the world right now. I want to focus on something else in the book that’s not political, though. Several times the author makes a point of emphasizing that people are very concerned with what other people think about them. We talk about that idea and break it down in today’s show. For now, I want to say this is something that a lot of copywriters and marketers miss the mark on. Which is a shame, because it’s a powerful selling tool. You could hardly say it’s unknown, but it’s not very well understood, either. Once you see what I’m going to show you, I think you’ll understand it a lot better. We start by looking for the deep underlying message in a TV commercial for the prescription drug Linzess. Though the spoken words and words on the screen are all about the medical condition and the drug, the story portrayed by the actors and scenery are quite different. We look at how the advertiser used the concern about what other people think to sell a drug designed to help people with belly pain and constipation. Then, we review with Jonathan Haidt said, as well as two little-known parts of Vic Schwab’s “How to Write a Good Advertisement” and Gene Schwartz’s “Breakthrough Copywriting.” Both of these Old Masters knew the how-other-people-think element of copywriting extremely well, and have some really important things to say about it. Finally, we look at how we, as direct marketers, can use this sales angle. Obviously we don’t have the wherewithal to set up, hire for, and film a commercial like Linzess did. Fortunately, there’s a much simpler way to use the what-people-think angle, subtly, in your copy. We’ll share an example with you.Download.

How do you get top dollar when you sell on eBay? Well of course you need good photos and a great description but it turns out some of the specific words in that description can really raise or lower the amount people will pay. I begin this episode with an explanation of that. (http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/money/a38347/how-to-make-money-on-ebay/)Workers improve when they get feedback. A company’s culture is the key to success. Good leadership is what makes a company thrive. Although you may believe these assumptions to be true, there is some good evidence they are not. Marcus Buckingham has studied people and performance for a long time and he joins me to explode some commonly held beliefs about workers and the workplace. Marcus’ new book is called Nine Lies About Work (https://amzn.to/2HlAkdW). If you work for a living and want to grow in your career, you need to hear this.Have you ever cracked an egg open and seen a little spot of what looks like blood inside? Is it safe to eat? I’ll explain what the food experts say about where that little spot of red comes from and just harmful it is. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-stir/egg-facts_b_2498764.html)Decisions about money always seem to be complicated. In part that is because we have so many financial decisions to make and there is a lot of emotion wrapped up in money. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started! Eliana: Hello, I would first like to say that I absolutely love your Podcasts and everything you have taught me thus far! I am a 21 year old personal trainer who is extremely interested in natural health and this podcast has changed my world! I have been struggling with a hiatal hernia for years. It feels like something is pressed up against my diaphragm or sometimes my left rib cage (it switches between those 2 places so sometimes I wonder if my diaphragm is out rather than it being a hiatal hernia). I have received chiropractic treatment for this and while the manual adjustment of pushing it back into place does help, it does not last. My mom, grandma, and twin sister also struggle with this. I had lymes disease 3-4 years ago (so did mom and sister) and was treated with a combination of homeopathy, Chinese herbs and glandulars by a lymes specialist in Maine. Also had H pylori and Epstein bar and was treated for those coinfections as well. Since then I feel great, had a feeling of relapse a year ago and cut out all food sensitivities. I feel great again but my hiatal hernia comes and goes in long phases. It is back now and I have not noticed any pattern to when it comes and goes. It causes me extreme stress and anxiety, especially at night. Also causes bloat. I have eaten extremely healthy (organic Whole Foods) since I was born thanks to my parents, and I pay attention to deficiencies, eat 3 meals a day, have a smoothie in the morning, fast for 12-13 hours, etc. I also exercise 5 days a week (lifting, cardio, mobility work, etc) and avoid crunching movements due to the hernia. I take zinc, B12, D3, and am a pescatarian/gluten, dairy, corn free, no processed foods, no antibiotics, don’t eat late at night, don’t overeat, eat tons of veggies and fruit. Please let me know what you know and suggest regarding hiatal hernias. Thank you so much! Christie: Good morning. Sorry for the long post but I’m hoping you can help. My mom started with diverticulosis in 2007 and in 2012 it became “moderate” diverticulitis. It got continually worse and then in 2017 she had a bowel resection done. They removed a foot of her colon. Ever since then she has dealt with horrible gas and constipation. She just had endoscopy done a few weeks ago because she felt like things weren’t passing through and the doctor said her stomach was red and inflamed but she does not have h. pylori. She also has Gastroparesis. The doctor then put her on Zantac two times a day for 4 weeks and Miralax at night. She also takes the Beachbody digestive boost. Her doctor has also mentioned putting her on Linzess. She can’t afford testing because my parents are retired and on a limited income so I’m wondering if you think doing a certain protocol would help her without testing first. Can you recommend anything? I would appreciate any suggestions. I’m not happy with how things are going for her and really want to see her healthy again.  Laura: Hi I have a couple of questions. I have only been listening for around a month so I may have just missed this. I haven’t heard dr Cabral talk much about beans and legumes, is the a reason why hey aren’t recommended or not at the top of the list! I’m primarily veggie and eat a lot of veg, however I do like to add lentils, beans or chickpeas to my food to add in protein and other nutrients! I was just interested to find out what your take is on this. Also, I’m going to start a naturopath nutritional therapy course in the UK next month so maybe I will find all this out for myself. However I have taken nutritional supplements before and I use to really be bought into juicing detoxing. However I have read various things that suggests that a supplements can actually shorten your life and aren’t as good as they seem. Also taking butrioanl shakes with condensed nutrients can actually be difficult for your body to digest all at once. For example you would eat a whole meal in a few minutes, therefore how is it ok for your body to process nutritional supplement shakes in such a short amount of time! Thanks Laura Katherine: Hi there, I'm from Windsor, Ontario, Canada and I'm wondering if there is a ND over here that you would recommend? I have benefits through my work that would cover my appointments so that's why I was wondering if Dr. Cabral would recommend someone over here? Thank you so much for your time, Katherine Meg: Hi Stephen, Being located in Australia, I don’t have easy access to wild salmon as all Australian salmon is farmed. Therefore I wanted your advice in regards to the best salmon choices. Would you recommend consuming wild tinned salmon over fresh farmed salmon? Is tinned salmon equally as nutritious? Renae: Hello Dr Cabral, My Mum was diagnosed with hemolytic anaemia a couple of years ago and has been taking pharmaceutical medication daily to manage this. We both believe that there must be a way of finding the root cause and getting to the bottom of it so that she can feel well and be medication free again. Other symptoms she experiences separate from the anaemia are under active thyroid, osteo arthritis, IBS, foggy brain and really bad memory loss. She is only 62. She has tried to improve on things like diet to help herself and has seen a naturopath briefly but has not seen a change in her blood levels or other symptoms. I gratefully discovered your work a few months ago and I am very hopeful that with your advice on what labs she should run and where to start that she can finally find her path to wellness again. In the meantime I have given her a copy of your book. I did write in to your team who recommended the HTMA and OAT (thank you team :)), however given this is not a common auto immune condition I just wanted to be sure if there were any other recommendations you would make. Huge gratitude for your work. Warmest regards, Renae. Julie: Do you have any protocols to address nighttime bed wetting in children? I have read that there may be imbalances or constipation that could cause this, but my pediatrician says it’s normal for boys and he will likely outgrow the issue (6 yr old boy) I have 3 children, 2 no longer had night time issues once potty trained and did not have to be “taught” to make it through the night. Thank you for your insight. I have learned so much from your podcasts already! Julie Brittany: What are gse Citracidal drops? Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started! Gwen: I've pretty much always had abnormal periods, but now it's almost been two years since my last period. I've gone to the gynecologist, with no real answers. The doctor ran several test, including checking my testosterone, Sex Hormone-binding Globulin, DHEA Sulfate, Luteinizing Hormone, and thyroid. All of these came back within normal range. The blood-work did show low prolactin (2.7 ng/ml) and low 17-OH progestrerone 14 ng/dl). I'm not underweight, nor do I have extremely strenuous exercise. Emotionally I do not feel stressed, so I'm not sure what else could be causing the amenorrhea. Some further background I've also been suffering from chronic constipation, and had the Mediator Release blood test. For the digestion issues, I've been following a low fodmap diet, while under the direction of a dietician. She had me taking Designs for Health GI Revive formula, magnesium, digestive enzymes and probiotics. The digestion does seem to be improving and now I'm trying the reintroduction phase. I also have low Complement C3 and C4, Speckled ANA Pattern, ANA titer 1:40, positive ANA screen by IFA, but my rheumatologist doesn't seem to say the results are conclusive of anything. I'm guessing the low fodmap diet should help seal any leaky gut I have, but Ive already been on the diet for several months. Since I'm a graduate student (who loves all the work I get to do!), I do not have tons of extra money to run every test, but I also want to get to the root cause of the amenorrhea. I love your podcast, and am very happy I discovered it! Kevin: Hi Dr. Cabral, My name is Kevin and I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how nutrition should look like for gaining muscle, but consuming foods that are good for my health. I competed in my first bodybuilding show last fall and I am now back on a gaining cycle. During my previous bulking cycle I was eating a lot of foods that helped me gain weight, but were not necessarily the best for my overall health. I want to keep competing and adding me more muscle, but not on the expense of my internal health. I am stuck between a rock and hard place trying to gain weight, but having a clean diet that cuts out sugar, wheat, and processed food 90% of the time. I only allow myself one cheat meal a week. With my body type leaning towards the ectomorph, combined with some mesomorph, I am having a hard time putting on mass. Any suggestions you may have would be truly appreciate. You are somebody I look up to and want to model for my personal life and career. Thank you very much sir. Anonymous: Hi Dr Cabral, Really appreciate your work and have become so much more knowledgeable after discovering your podcast. My question is regarding LINZESS, I have been battling GI issues (constipation, gas, bloating) for 6 years now. I have tried so many diets, detoxes and supplements including the Candida protocol over those years and nothing seemed to work until I was prescribed LINZESS. Since starting Linzess all my symptoms seemed to disappear. Do you have an idea why this drug has been so successful ? I would prefer to take a more natural approach to healing in the future. Thanks much! Alex: Hi Dr. Cabral - I have a question about overheating at night. For the past year or so I have been waking up very hot in the middle of the night (but not sweating, I do not typically sweat heavily when exercising either). I have updated my bedding (per your recommendations in previous podcasts), and have kept a bedroom temperature of 62-65 degrees through the winter. When I get into bed, I am usually chilly but wake up a few hours later almost every night throwing off the sheets and extremely warm. I'm relatively healthy... I took the Food Sensitivity test last year and have eliminated all high sensitivity foods and also completed the CBO protocol after taking the Organic Acids Test. Any ideas what could be causing the elevated temperatures at night? Thanks in advance! Brandon: Dr. Cabral, I’ve cleaned up all of my personal care products including deodorant, soap, and toothpaste. BUT, I can’t find a hair product similar to a hair fiber (my hair is really fine and looks like a frizzy mess if I don’t put anything on it) that is organic, free of unknown ingredients and fragrance. Any tips on finding something like this? Also I’m looking for a shampoo as well. Elizabeth: Hello Stephen and colleagues. I am 64 and have been struggling with bothersome skin issues on my face for decades. I have always had acne, not severe but unattractive. In my 40s I developed some mild dermatitis and now Rosecia. At times, like right now,  I experience all 3. I know my digestion isn’t great. Based on a tendency to inflammatory issues (mild IBS, post nasal drip, joint issues)I follow a paleo-ish diet and don’t eat wheat and gluten and avoid grains and dairy. My body seems very happy with that. But it hasn’t improved my skin as I had hoped.. Do you have any suggestions as to the cause of my skin issues and what I can do? Thanks for any help you can offer. Cheers, Elizabeth Cindy: Hello! Do you offer a G.I. Map lab test kit? If so, what is the cost? Is there a link you can send me please? Thank you!!
