In Part I of this eight-part series on rural higher education and workforce development, produced in collaboration with and underwritten by Ascendium Education Group, Michelle chats with four rural community college presidents: Lisa Larson, from Eastern Maine Community College; Chad Brown, from Zane State College; Angel Reyna, from Madera Community College; and Jay Falkner, from Carl Albert State College. Intentional integrative planning among highs schools, community colleges, and four-year colleges, meaningful partnerships, effective dual enrollment programs, and more proactive engagement with other stakeholders are all keys for community colleges success, says Reyna. Community colleges are still learning what it means to be a community college, says Brown, and one of the goals for community colleges should be changing the mindset of local communities, not just in terms of recruiting students, but also to impact their parents, especially students from minority communities. Larson asserts that it’s never too early to figure out what students’ aspirations are, so summer programs on campus, concurrent educations initiatives and guided pathways are vitally important for getting students connected with employers. Falkner says the community colleges should take a more holistic approach in education, especially as we approach a post-COVID era, including building valuable academic partnerships that include academic preparedness, exam preparation, and professional development for K-12 teachers. All four community college presidents agreed on once critical point: Community colleges play an integral role in rural regional economic success. This episode and the entire series on rural higher education and workforce development is sponsored by Ascendium Education Group, a nonprofit organization committed to helping learners from low-income backgrounds reach their educational and career goals. Our guest this week is Lisa Larson. Originally, from NJ, but moved to Florida 7 years ago to care for her dad. This enabled her to finish college and gain her Elementary Education degree. Her passion is reading, and as a reading teacher she believes that children need to fall in love with reading to be successful. Currently, she is a Reading Interventionist pulling small groups all day and has been teaching for 6 years! In this episode, Lisa and I talk about positive behavior support. The power of believing in a kid who struggles and the power of making a kid a simple sandwich for lunch. We also talk about teaching to a test and the failure of the school system to make reading accessible, relevant, and engaging for students to inspire them to read more! Don't forget to follow us @teatimewithateacher for weekly episodes with transformational educators!
Hello, I'm Lisa Larson. I'm an expert in leadership development, and after having had the good fortune to work with the GCSP in several of their Inspiring Women Leaders programs, in 2020 I was invited to join them as a fellow of Women Peace and Security [part of the Global Fellowship Initiative thanks to the sponsorship of the US mission to the United Nations in Geneva. 2020 coincided with the 20th anniversary of the landmark UN Security Council resolution 1325, which laid out the Women Peace and Security agenda. I wanted to get the perspectives of different people on how they view the current state of Women Peace and Security. And since we were unfortunately all stuck at home, I had informal chats with them virtually, and we called the resulting four part Podcast Series Tea at 1325. I'm grateful for the positive response we've received about the podcast, and now I'd like to offer a bonus episode. I asked each of the people I interviewed what advice they would give to a young person just starting their career in the field of peace and security, and I shared it with an inspiring young woman to get her reactions. I hope you enjoy the conversation. I'd like to welcome Heather McDonald. Heather, would you mind introducing yourself a little bit about what you do?
Lisa Larson is a mother, daughter, Senior Care Advocate, Learning Assistant, Co-Owner of TSC Talks, LLC and all-around awesome human being. Lisa started working on the podcast in 2018 after hearing the resilience, intensity complicated nature of the challenges people with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex were dealing with and offered to help me edit. The rest is history. We’ve evolved considerably since our early days and expanded the breadth and depth of our content, from purely TSC related to the broader “special needs” umbrella, then cannabis, cannabinoid medicine, and alternative health to where we are today, highlighting the cracks in the system, hoping to shed some light, inspiration and provide resources and information on practical ways to buck the system. Well….not buck it, but bolster, integrate and enrich our lives with stories of others who have found ways to improve quality of life without increasing dependence. Lisa’s story is the start of this content thread. Here’s a few lines from the podcast transcript to give you a bit of a teaser… “Lisa, in the last year, actually in 2020, has transitioned members of her family that are older, into her living space, and I've just kind of watched it from outside. And it's been quite informative witnessing the challenges and the rewards. We thought it would be great for Lisa to come on. And just talk a little bit about, what made her decide to do this, how it happened, and, shed light on her process. I think this is a common theme for a lot of people is what do we do when our parents get older…” Here is a link to the full transcript of the podcast: https://otter.ai/u/OpicltOInNrjw4bb31gSRck6oIo Lisa’s links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lisa.o.larson Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lisalarson7/

This is the continuing story of Lisa Larson's devastating loss of her son due to an overdose. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that our system for treating substance use disorder is in need of a major overhaul. From the prescribing doctor to the emergency room (stigma) to the rehabs (body brokering) and especially for the lack of pertinent education and support for the families. This has been our mission all along, supporting and educating the families.

We hear about the homelessness and harm reduction situation in Abbotsford, BC and an alternative housing model in Portland, Oregon. In 2005, the City of Abbotsford passed a bylaw effectively banning harm reduction services, and in summer of 2013, the City dumped manure on a homeless encampment in an attempt to force them out of the area. Pivot Legal Society's DJ Larkin speaks about legal challenges against the City of Abbotsford that are currently in the courts. Finally, we from Lisa Larson about Dignity Village -- an alternative housing model for homeless people in Portland, Oregon.
Another one of these computer questions that may or may not have real-world implications. Seems that I’ve batted around to the Somerville contingent again.
Another pair of words with a strong “which would you rather be?” factor. I suppose we’re all weird and strange, in our own ways. How about you?
