Today, I am blessed to have here with me Alastair Bostwick. He is a New York City Journalist with a multifaceted career that spans various media outlets and industries. With a passion for video production, Alastair has made a significant mark in the world of journalism, capturing attention with his engaging and insightful content. In this episode, Alastair dives into the intricate interplay between UV light and opioid receptors. Alastair takes us through the nuanced connections between light exposure and mood disorders, shedding light on the intriguing parallels between sunlight and opioid experiences. We address opioid addiction and the dualities surrounding tanning beds, challenging conventional approaches with the potential of UV light as a substitute. Lastly, we cover the controversy surrounding sunblocks, navigating discussions involving dermatologists, and emphasizing a balanced perspective on skin cancer prevention and vitamin D synthesis. The hypothesis suggested that UV light could affect opioid receptors in human brains. -       Alastair took a proactive approach to test his hypothesis by exposing himself aggressively to UV light. Living in New York City, he deliberately spent two hours in the sun every day during the summer, in addition to using a tanning bed vigorously. The goal was to maximize exposure to UV light. -       Alastair was strategic about the timing of UV exposure, going out between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., which is considered the highest UV index. He aimed to expose himself during the peak hours of UV intensity to enhance the effectiveness of the experiment. [08:30] Narcan's Swift Action and Alastair's UV Light Experiment -       Narcan rapidly detaches substances that bind to opioid receptors in the brain. It acts quickly, causing not only a reversal of the respiratory effects but also inducing withdrawal symptoms if the person is not breathing. This mechanism serves as the basis for Alastair's experiment. -       Alastair hypothesized that if there is a correlation between UV light and the opioid effect in the brain, Narcan, known to work on normal opioid usage, should have a similar effect in the presence of UV light. This led him to experiment by exposing himself to UV light and then taking Narcan, resulting in a full withdrawal experience. -       According to him, the consistent results indicated that UV light does indeed affect opioid receptors in the brain. -       Alastair's experience lends support to the notion that UV light has a significant and consistent impact on opioid receptors in the brain. [12:30] An Exploration of Light, Mood, and the Subtle Opioid Influence of UV Rays -       Alastair decided to dig deeper into the connection between light exposure, particularly visible light, and mood disorders like SAD. -       He discovered that, separate from the positive effects of visible light seen in SAD treatment, there's another aspect involving UV light, which is not visible to the human eye. -       UV light, distinct from visible light, has effects on the body, including replenishing vitamin D levels and influencing opioid receptors. -       Alastair explained that UV light, over time, subtly affects human opioid receptors, similar to substances like heroin, morphine, fentanyl, and Vicodin. -       While the response is not as strong, prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to feelings of tiredness or reinvigoration, akin to experiencing a mild opioid stimulation. This sheds light on why people may enjoy spending a day at the beach or using tanning beds to achieve a subtle opioid effect. [19:20] Addressing Opioid Addiction and Tanning Bed Dualities -       Alastair suggests that one approach to address opioid addiction is to ensure individuals receive enough sunlight and vitamin D throughout their lives. By maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D, the brain may be less likely to respond to prescription painkillers in an addictive manner, potentially preventing addiction from the outset. -       Researchers are exploring an alternative approach for individuals already abusing or dependent on opioids. Instead of traditional methods like methadone clinics, where individuals are gradually tapered off opioids, there is evidence suggesting that ultraviolet (UV) light could serve as a substitute. -       Alastair discusses the dual nature of tanning beds. While he initially doubted the concept of tanning bed addiction, he acknowledges that there is compelling evidence from esteemed researchers suggesting that tanning beds, with their potent UVA light, can be as addictive as synthetic opioids like Vicodin or Oxycodone. -       However, he also highlights the potential use of tanning beds as a tool to help individuals transition off synthetic opioids. [23:45] Sunblock Controversies: Balancing Skin Cancer Prevention and Vitamin D Synthesis -       The use of sunblock is a controversial subject, particularly in discussions involving dermatologists who often focus on skin cancer prevention. -       Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, especially from the sun, is known to cause skin cancer. While some doctors recommend avoiding UV light and using vitamin D supplements, Alastair suggests a more relaxed approach, emphasizing the benefits of an active lifestyle and time spent outdoors. -       Some doctors advocate for sunblock as a means to prevent skin cancer, while others, like Alastair, express concerns about its potential negative impact on vitamin D synthesis. -       Alastair expresses skepticism about the marketing behind sunblocks, suggesting that it may not always be honest. [48:00] A Journey through Mood Changes and Tanning Bed Seeking Behavior -       As the seasons changed, Alastair noticed a shift in his mood and described feeling a compulsion in the back of his mind. This compulsion led to what he referred to as "tanning bed seeking behavior." -       He experienced a sense of low-level gloom and a compulsion to seek out tanning, akin to textbook drug-seeking behavior. -       Alastair was mindful of the behavioral changes he observed in himself, characterized by a compulsion to seek out tanning beds. -       He noted that the compulsion to seek out tanning eventually went away. While he initially felt the urge to address the low mood through tanning, with time, the compulsion subsided. AND MUCH MORE! While representing Virginia Beach, Jason was recognized as “Legislator of the Year” in both 2018 and 2019 from the College Affordability and Public Trust for his work on transparency and affordability in higher education, as well as by the Hampton Roads Military Officers Association of America in 2018. He was also recognized in 2019 by the Safe House Project for his work combatting human trafficking, an issue that his administration is prioritizing. THE HONORABLE MARK POWELLLACKAWANNA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYMark Powell, District Attorney of Lackawanna County, has made combating the opioid crisis a top priority of his administration. He is the co-chair of the Lackawanna Recovery Coalition, which works to reduce opioid overdose deaths in Lackawanna County by connecting people with substance use disorder to treatment, implementing lifesaving harm-reduction strategies, advocating for long-term recovery, and working to reduce stigma surrounding the disease of addiction.   In October 2019, District Attorney Powell established an Overdose Fatality Review Team to study overdose deaths in Lackawanna County to determine the root causes of addiction-related deaths and implement evidence-based solutions. DA Powell also initiated a Fresh Start Program for lower-level drug offenders to supplement Treatment Court. Fresh Start gives offenders the chance to choose treatment instead of jail and avoid having a criminal record. He is also a board member of the Lackawanna County Treatment Court, which established and operates the Recovery Bank in downtown Scranton, a peer-driven recovery support center that focuses on whole-person healing of mind, body, and spirit.DA Powell is on the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association's Executive Board and serves on its Education and Training Committee. In addition, he was appointed by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to serve on the Continuing Legal Education Board, which oversees education programs for attorneys statewide. Before being elected DA, Powell was a partner in the Powell Law firm in Scranton for 27 years. He earned many professional accolades, including the distinction of being a Board-Certified Trial Specialist in both Criminal Law and Civil Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. For 12 years, he served as a Hearing Committee member for the Pennsylvania Disciplinary Board and is a past president of Northeastern Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association. He is past co-chair of the Lackawanna County Bench Bar Conference and serves on the Lackawanna Bar Association's Continuing Legal Education and Bench Bar Committee. DA Powell frequently teaches CLE seminars for other attorneys across the state. In 2016, the National Institute for Trial Advocacy awarded him the Teaching Excellence Award at the Advanced Trial Advocacy Program.DA Powell earned his undergraduate degree from Villanova University, his Juris Doctorate from Catholic University, and his Master of Laws in Trial Advocacy from Temple University where he graduated with honors.Check Out Lackawanna Recovery Coalition's Website BelowFREE NALOXONE BY MAIL TODAY with this LINKhttps://www.lackawannarecovery.org/Support the show

Our country has been faced with, and is still facing extraordinary and unprecedented times in so many ways. Not only have we been plagued by a pandemic that is contributing to the loss of many of our friends and neighbors, but our government's reaction to the pandemic is taking an incredible toll of it's own. With so many lives and livelihoods decimated by lock-downs, mandates  and the resulting loss of businesses and destruction of the economy, one of many unintended consequences is the number of people who have relapsed into the black hole of depression and addiction. This week's guest on the Derate the Hate podcast is no stranger to addiction and all the troubles that come along with it. Scott H. Silverman is an expert crisis coach and family navigator, encouraging families and individuals to move forward on the road to recovery. Scott has been featured on multiple news and media outlets for his expertise about addiction and recovery. He is an author, an interventionist and a fellow podcaster.Scott knows what addiction and hopelessness are about because he's been there. Scott has spent nearly 4 decades in recovery. It was during a business trip more than 35 years ago, Scott was on the edge, or literally a ledge. Struggling from addiction, considering suicide, and feeling like things were unraveling, he was at rock bottom. The day after trying to kill himself, he flew home and immediately entered treatment. he lived the embarrassment, fear, and helplessness surrounding addiction. But most importantly, he has come out the other side whole.Today, Scott is the CEO and leads the team at Confidential Recovery, an intensive outpatient substance abuse recovery program based in San Diego, California.Do not miss this great conversation where Scott and I discuss addiction relapses in the age of Covid. We dive in to how humans are social creatures who need social interaction, the stigma of asking for help, and so many other destructive features of drug  & alcohol addiction, fentanyl overdoses and the opioid crisis that is facing our nation. What have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? The world is a better place if we are better people, and that begins with each of us leading a better life. Be kind to one another, be grateful for everything you've got, and make each and every day the day that you want it to be!Please follow The Derate The Hate podcast on Facebook, MeWe, Instagram, Twitter . Kellyanne Conway, Counselor to the President at The White House provides a timely and relevant update on safely and prudently reopening schools in America. President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and the First Lady Melania Trump held a strategic event at the White House with major stakeholders in the education sphere including state, local, and tribal leaders, educators, and families. Over 50 million American students from K-12 have been impacted by the stay-at-home orders and school shutdowns. Kellyanne Conway conveys concerns about the wellbeing of the forgotten child and highlights challenges including the digital divide adversely affecting low income families. Kellyanne Conway also shared about the vital healthcare initiatives and reform efforts that President Trump’s administration has been working on - to make healthcare accessible, affordable and transparent for American patients and taxpayers, including: President Trump’s “Executive Order on Improving Price and Quality Transparency in American Healthcare to Put Patients First” which was signed in June 2019; The most recent victory, with the federal court upholding the Trump administration’s hospital price transparency which requires hospitals to disclose secret rates they negotiate with insurance companies; Lowering insulin costs for Medicare beneficiaries, whereby common forms of insulin will be available to seniors at no more than $35 for a month’s supply; Addressing opioid crisis and passing Support Act, which Kellyanne considers to be the most robust and significant bipartisan accomplishment of the President’s first term.
