Armed with her Powers education, she went on to study at Western Michigan University and the University of Michigan – Flint before moving to California. She married her husband Brad and lived out west for seven years, taking on work as a real estate appraiser and salesperson as they started their lives together. Throughout her career journey, Kathleen always had a guiding passion. From the time she was a child, she had been troubled by miscommunication. Why do so many people seem to talk past each other when they have discussions or arguments? Why do people say things they don't mean? Above all, she wondered why people would say unkind things to each other when it wasn't necessary – especially because, in her view, it was never necessary. She always wanted to help people become better communicators, but it wasn't until she and Brad, her husband, moved to Maryland in 1991 that her passion found direction. During the long car ride from coast to coast, she listened to the work of Florence Littauer, an author of temperament-based books. Littauer's theories sparked an odyssey for Kathleen that, in some ways, is still ongoing today. Kathleen realized that the keys to kind and productive communication are empathy and mutual understanding. Everyone naturally speaks and hears all language from their own individual innate wirings. This means that something said by one person can be interpreted in a completely unique way by another. This gap – the space between what is said and what is heard – is often the root of conflict in marriages, business relationships, and friendships. She found the solution to this miscommunication in her study of the four temperaments – melancholy, phlegmatic, choleric, and sanguine. The temperaments are a method for classifying individuals based on their natural tendencies, needs, strengths, weaknesses, and innate needs. Each temperament has a different set of these – for example, melancholy individuals thrive on space and silence, whereas sanguines need acceptance and approval to feel fulfilled. Kathleen discovered that understanding the temperaments is vital to healthy communication. First, when someone understands their own temperament, they are better equipped to understand their emotional, spiritual, and social needs. Filling these needs and effectively communicating them to others can help a person operate in their strengths rather than in their weaknesses. Furthermore, understanding the innate wiring of another person allows one to “speak their language.” For example, even if you say the exact same words to a choleric and a phlegmatic, they'll each probably hear something completely different. Kathleen found that teaching people to communicate intentionally in this way is often the key to saving relationships. Knowing the innate needs of others allows us to love them better. Her study was always motivated by her strong faith – specifically, all of her work on communication centers upon the directive passed down by Christ through Apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome words come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up, according to their needs, so that it may benefit those who listen.” Because of her spiritual focus, she partnered with North Point Ministries to spread the message of healthy, temperament-based communication as widely as possible. She has written a workbook, recorded several free videos, and released a six-week bible study called “I Said This, You Heard That” aimed at developing communication skills by educating people about the four temperaments through the framework of Ephesians 4:29 (if you are curious, you can check out her work on her website at isaidyouheard.study). Kathleen regularly travels around the country speaking about and providing training on temperaments and empathetic communication – in total, her work has already impacted millions of relationships worldwide. Currently, Kathleen lives in Georgia with her husband Brad. The two live about an hour north of Atlanta, and enjoy spending time with friends and family, enjoying the lake or working on projects around the house. She has two children, Avery and Brice, who also live in Georgia. Avery, her daughter, graduated from the University of Georgia in 2019 and works as a graphic designer. Brice, her son, started a coding education company after receiving his degree from Georgia Tech in 2020. Kathleen published her second book in 2021 called “A Grown-Up's Guide To Kids' Wiring,” which teaches better communication skills to anyone in the life of a child or teenager: parents, grandparents, coaches, counselors, aunt, uncles, neighbors, etc! Kathleen continues to speak and teach across the country, as well as meet oe-on-one with people for personal coaching. The demand for Kathleen and her content has been so high that she has expanded her team to include a small group of women who speak and teach on her behalf, when needed. She has one thing that she'd like to say to every single person reading this: “The words you use are the words you choose; remember, kind words are cool!”

Guest Richard Littauer Panelist Karen Sandler Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain! In this episode, the tables are turned today as Karen Sandler takes over as host, interviewing our very own Richard Littauer. Recorded at the Free and Open Source Yearly conference, the discussion delves into Richard's evolving perspective on sustainability in open source projects. His experiences attending multiple conferences have led him to question the term ‘sustainability,' advocating instead for a shift towards values such as human rights, joy, and mitigating harm. Also, Richard and Karen explore the significance of user rights, copyleft licensing, and GPL, voicing concerns over the erosion of these rights. They end with a discussion on the systemic complexities in the open source world, the potential for a new community approach to sustainable code, and an emphasis on collective action and personal joy. Press download to hear more cool stuff! [00:00:58] Richard offers a detailed insight into his talk. He explains his perspective on sustainability, suggesting it may not be the most fitting term when applied to the open source community. He shares his experience attending multiple sustain conferences and how it shaped his views, and discusses sustainability for developers, touching upon burnout, recognition, and issues of dependency, supply chain, security, and legal issues. [00:03:31] He notes the wide range of topics covered in the Sustain podcasts, highlighting the complexity of sustainability. He questions the usefulness of the term ‘sustainability' and suggests we need to focus on what truly matters in life, such as human rights, mitigating harm, and seeking joy. [00:04:39] Karen reviews the flow of Richard's talk, and he summarizes his talk questioning the emphasis on sustainability and growth, recommending instead to focus on joy and relieving suffering. [00:05:55] Richard advocates for focusing on personal fulfillment and societal impact instead of simply growth and funding. He emphasizes that the ultimate goal should be about human rights, liberties, and happiness. [00:07:20] Karen wonders if Richard is going to rename the podcast. He maintains his support for open source but stresses the importance of focusing on impact and human values. He emphasizes the importance of considering one's own project in the larger context and evaluating its actual importance. [00:08:47] Richard discusses the importance of GPL for user protections and shares concerns about devices locking users out, he shares his changing stance towards GPL and the impact of his code. [00:09:36] Karen and Richard discuss the potential for a new community approach to sustainable code, and Richard suggests that sharing stories and rethinking relationships with technology is a way forward. [00:10:46] Karen asks Richard about his views on corporate power, and he explains how his view has evolved. [00:12:04] They discuss the systematic problems and individual roles within them. Richard explores the conundrum of trying to change a system from the inside or outside, and he prefers to use his knowledge and privilege to make an impact rather than disengage from the system. [00:13:41] Thinking back to all the conversations Richard's had about the sustain movement, he shares his favorite conversation with Dominic Tarr, who left coding to pursue personal joy. Karen emphasizes the need for collective action to address systemic problems. [00:16:01] Find out where you can follow Richard and his projects online. Thoughts on personality profiles of people from Florence Littauer's classic, Personality Plus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9YjYUJ1-to Transcription Personality Plus, by Florence Littauer. Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live. I wanted to talk about this book today and how it would affect you in your business. But first I have to move by chair this is this is we record these live, we do not edit them. And my chair for the last handful of episodes keeps hitting the back. But me with personality that does not. That gets distracted easily. I think about it every time we're doing these videos. And then as soon as I'm done with the video, I forget about it. Night after night, I come back and if you watch the earlier videos, you might hear a little clunking in the background because I'm hitting the bookshelf that has a a metal lunch pail on the top of it. It makes this clanking sound, it's a horrible thing anyway, so you didn't need to know that, but it does. It does have something to do with our topic tonight is personality plus, this was the first book I read on the four personality theory, which is the idea that everyone has a certain amount of all of the four quadrants of personalities. And depending on the amount of each one that you have is how your personality exudes itself in public. As I've studied this through the years, I've come to the conclusion that Kathy Colby, I believe is correct that this is from the affective of side of the brain. So it has to do with the side of your animal side of who you are. That is deals in emotion, it deals in communication, and so on so forth. It's a very specific area of the brain, that people are considered 1,2,3,4 of the four different quadrants. These quadrants go by different names, you've probably heard of the colored ones where you have certain colors that represent I believe it's green, red, blue, and yellow, I believe. And then there's ones where they named after animals. This particular one of the oldest one that I'm aware of, which was first developed by Hippocrates, of famous from the Hippocratic oath, one of the first major doctor minds back in ancient Greece, he noticed that people, certain people had a large amount of fluids in their system because he was one of the original ones to start documenting, taking apart cadavers. He found that certain people had a large amount of bile or a large amount of phlegm in them, and he pointed it back to their personality, which is where you come up with these four names that Florence Littauer uses in her book. Which are the four names of the personality extremes, which is called choleric, melancholy, sanguine, and why is my mind blanking…choleric, melancholy, sanguine, and phlegmatic. Each one of those is based on the amount of fluids that was in a person's system. Now through the years different people have come up with different versions of this different actually famous philosophers have an I can't remember them all off the top, I think Aristotle may have been one of them, that thought that there may be five personality extremes and so forth. And so this is this has been bandied about throughout time, but it all plays to the same general concept that you probably have one major personality feature that shows up the most and probably a secondary one that is that's most visible. In most cases in most people. That is the situation. Hers is a very…it's a very, very casual look at the whole thing she she goes into it deeply because of her personality but she also it comes at it from a very unique perspective. She also pulls in a whole lot of her Christian perspective into it. If you're offended by that type of thing, this book probably wouldn't be for you. If you can look past it, whether you're for or against it or see it the same way she does. It's worth a read. It's one of the is the first book I ever read on personality.

In her innovative and revealing study of midcentury American sex and culture, Bad Girls: Young Women, Sex, and Rebellion before the Sixties (University of North Carolina Press, 2015), Amanda Littauer traces the origins of the "sexual revolution" of the 1960s. She argues that sexual liberation was much more than a reaction to 1950s repression because it largely involved the mainstreaming of a counterculture already on the rise among girls and young women decades earlier. From World War II–era "victory girls" to teen lesbians in the 1940s and 1950s, these nonconforming women and girls navigated and resisted intense social and interpersonal pressures to fit existing mores, using the upheavals of the era to pursue new sexual freedoms. Building on a new generation of research on postwar society, Littauer tells the history of diverse young women who stood at the center of major cultural change and helped transform a society bound by conservative sexual morality into one more open to individualism, plurality, and pleasure in modern sexual life.
