“The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception.” - Proverbs 14:8When it comes to saving, spending, and talking about money, our God-given temperament plays a bigger role than we think. Today, Kathleen Edelman shares how understanding your wiring can lead to better financial decisions and healthier money conversations.Kathleen Edelman is the author of “I Said This, You Heard That: How Your Wiring Colors Your Communication.” She is certified in Biblical Studies and Christian Counseling Psychology and has spent over 30 years coaching clients in the art of effective communication. What Is Temperament—And Why Does It Matter?Temperament was studied by Hippocrates 2,000 years ago. It's innate, unchangeable, and part of your design by God, like your eye color or fingerprint. In contrast, “personality” evolves based on culture, upbringing, education, and environment. This foundational understanding is essential not just in relationships but also in how we approach money.Temperament influences how we budget, spend, save, and even how we talk about money. Here's how each temperament—Yellow, Red, Blue, and Green—sees financial decisions through a unique lens:YELLOW (Sanguine): The Fun-Loving GiverWiring: Optimistic, relational, in-the-moment.Financial Outlook: Sees money as a way to connect and create experiences. Often spontaneous and generous, but may avoid serious conversations about finances out of fear of conflict or damaging relationships.Growth Tip: Build guardrails around spending while leaving room for joy. Schedule regular money conversations to reduce anxiety.RED (Choleric): The Visionary LeaderWiring: Goal-driven, results-oriented, confident.Financial Outlook: Excels at goal setting, budgeting for success, and achieving results. May be impulsive or steamroll others in decision-making.Growth Tip: Invite feedback and take the time to consider other perspectives. Collaboration builds trust.BLUE (Melancholic): The Cautious PlannerWiring: Detail-oriented, safety-driven, analytical.Financial Outlook: Needs detailed plans, emergency savings, and financial security. Prefers structure and predictability.Growth Tip: Communicate your need for time to process financial decisions. Allow room for flexibility while maintaining your desire for order.GREEN (Phlegmatic): The Peaceful StabilizerWiring: Calm, steady, conflict-avoidant.Financial Outlook: Values simplicity, consistency, and low-stress systems. May avoid decisions that involve conflict or complexity.Growth Tip: Don't be afraid to speak up about your financial opinions. Take the time you need, but be intentional about engaging. Why Temperament Matters in Money ConversationsMost miscommunication is not intentional. For instance, it could be that you're speaking ‘blue,' and they're hearing ‘yellow.'” That misalignment can be costly, both relationally and financially. To bridge the gap, learn to recognize both your own temperament and the temperament of the person you're speaking with. Then, speak their language.Example: A Yellow Talking to a BlueA Yellow might say: “Hey _______, I know details matter to you. Can we sit down together and make a plan that gives us both a vision with a little room for fun?” This honors the Blue's need for order and gives space for the Yellow's desire for connection.Example: A Red Talking to a GreenRather than saying, “We need to figure this out now,” a Red could say: “I'd love us to make a simple plan together so that we both feel secure. We can talk it through at your pace.” This respects the Greens' need for harmony and time.Next Steps for Growth and StewardshipKathleen's workbook, I Said This, You Heard That, is designed to help you better understand your wiring—and live it out in strength, not weakness. “Let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.” - Ephesians 5:33Love and respect are often conveyed in the words that spouses choose to communicate. Those words can have a big impact on the marriage relationship. Kathleen Edelman joins us to discuss choosing the right words for your spouse.Kathleen Edelman is the author of “I Said This, You Heard That: How Your Wiring Colors Your Communication.” She is certified in biblical studies and Christian Counseling Psychology and has spent over thirty years coaching clients in communication. The Key to Healthy Communication in MarriageCommunication styles are the key to understanding one another. There's a big gray area between what we say and what our spouse hears. Each temperament speaks its own language, and we must apply it to become fluent in our spouse's language. Many marital conflicts appear to be about money, parenting, or household responsibilities, but at their core, they stem from miscommunication. Recognizing that your spouse's temperament affects how they express and receive information is the first step toward reducing misunderstandings. One of the biggest communication pitfalls is assumption—assuming that your spouse speaks and understands your language. That's not true. We each speak our own language and must become fluent in our spouse's language.Another common trap is operating out of our weaknesses rather than our strengths. Ask yourself: “What part did I play in this miscommunication?”“How can I choose differently to stay in my strengths?”Most miscommunication is not intentional, she emphasizes. Rather, it's a result of speaking different emotional and verbal languages. The Power of Words: Choosing to Build Up, Not Tear DownEphesians 4:29 reminds us:"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."Our words hold incredible power. They can either build up or tear down our spouse. Learning to communicate in a way that blesses rather than wounds is a game changer in marriage.Listening is a critical skill in communication, and there are three key practices for improving it:The Power of the Pause—Before responding, take a moment to reflect. Instead of reacting to what was said, focus on why it was said. Listening to Understand—Rather than formulating your response while your spouse is talking, actively listen to grasp their perspective. Responding, Not Reacting—Choose words carefully, ensuring they are constructive rather than defensive. We should desire that every word that comes out of our mouths be a gift to the person we speak to.Of course, it's also crucial to remember that communication is more than words—it includes body language, tone, and facial expressions. Our temperament even affects how we express ourselves nonverbally. Everything you do is motivated by the design God gave you. Understanding how our spouse interprets our nonverbal cues can help avoid unnecessary misunderstandings.Understanding Temperaments in MarriageA significant takeaway from Kathleen's work is the importance of understanding temperaments—both our own and our spouse's. Kathleen's book includes an inventory to help couples identify their temperament, which can be a game changer in communication. Each temperament has specific needs that shape how they engage in communication:Yellows (Sanguine)—Need fun, people, and spontaneity. They may struggle with feeling restricted.Reds (Choleric)—Need goals, control, and results. They want to be part of decision-making.Blues (Melancholic)—Need security and order. They may be hesitant to spend money without planning.Greens (Phlegmatic)—Need balance and peace. They want to avoid conflict and seek compromise. When couples recognize these differences, it fosters empathy and prevents unnecessary frustration.Money is a significant source of marital conflict, but these disagreements often stem from temperament differences more than financial realities.Yellows love generosity but also crave financial security. They may struggle with balancing saving and spontaneous giving.Reds want financial goals and a clear plan for achieving them.Blues prioritize security and tend to be more cautious with money.Greens seek balance and prefer avoiding financial stress.Understanding why your spouse approaches money how they do can foster mutual respect and teamwork. Instead of seeing their perspective as frustrating, you can recognize it as their God-given design.Keeping Communication Strong Over the YearsAs years pass, spouses may drift apart if they stop investing in communication. That's why couples are encouraged to stay in dating mode:Remember why you fell in love. Remember when you were dating—you put your best of yourself forward. Keep doing that. Look for the best in your spouse. Instead of focusing on their weaknesses, celebrate their strengths. Avoid complacency. Once you become content, weaknesses start to show up. Then, instead of appreciating differences, you try to change your spouse. When couples continue dating and choose to love each other through words and deeds, their marriages stay strong. The ultimate goal is authenticity—becoming exactly who God designed you to be while learning to love your spouse for who they are. When you reach authenticity, you're free. You're not trying to be someone else or change your spouse. You're showing up as yourself, using words that honor God.The Bible contains over 120 verses about words, making it clear how we communicate matters. When we build up rather than tear down, we strengthen our marriage, our family, and our faith.By understanding how God designed us, learning to listen, and choosing words that build up, we can create marriages filled with grace, love, and true understanding. If you want to transform your marriage through better communication, consider picking up a copy of Kathleen's book, I Said This, You Heard That: How Your Wiring Colors Your Communication. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:We have the opportunity to buy a home from my friend's father for $300,000, which is listed at $350,000. The quote is, “The lines are painted wrong.” Who said that and what did this person mean? That was my Dad. He used to tell us that as kids. You see, my Dad took pride in his driving abilities, and when he would not park the straightest in a parking space, we kids would take great delight in pointing it out to him. His reply was always, “The lines are painted wrong.” Oddly enough, we LOVED this answer! We would argue back, “No they aren't! You parked crooked!” He would just shake his head, smile, and calmly insist, “The lines are painted wrong.” In my career as an industrial water treatment professional, this quote has always stuck with me. There are most certainly times when the lines are painted wrong. The control ranges may be wrong, too tight, or too broad. The lines are painted wrong. The expectations from a client or manager may be unrealistic. The lines are painted wrong. The finger often gets pointed at the water treatment professional first when things go wrong with water-related equipment, even when it's not our fault. The lines are painted wrong. While it would not have been appropriate for my Dad to repaint the lines in a parking lot, it can be appropriate for us to repaint the lines at times in industrial water treatment. Control ranges can be appropriately adjusted. Expectations can be diplomatically realigned. Blame can be diffused or redirected with listening, discussion, facts, and patience. Sometimes, it takes a little thinking outside the box to realize when the lines are painted wrong. I have my Dad to thank for helping me see this at such a young age, and I can't wait to tell him that now tens of thousands of people have just learned from him, too. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” - Ephesians 4:29Have you ever wanted to take back words, maybe even right after saying them? We often use the phrase, “That came out wrong.” Kathleen Edelman joins us today to talk about getting communication right the first time.Kathleen Edelman is the author of “I Said This, You Heard That: How Your Wiring Colors Your Communication.” She is certified in Biblical Studies and Christian Counseling Psychology and has spent more than 30 years coaching clients in the art of communication.Temperament vs. Personality: What's the Difference? Many of us think of communication in terms of personality, but temperament is actually a concept rooted in ancient studies by Hippocrates. While personality is shaped by factors like life experiences and birth order, temperament is hardwired and unchangeable—like your eye color or fingerprint.Temperament defines how we naturally respond to various situations. Understanding it can transform how we approach everything, from relationships to finances. The Four Temperaments: What Are They?Kathleen's work breaks down temperaments into four distinct categories, each with its own language and motivations. Here's a brief overview:Sanguine (Yellow): These individuals are motivated by people and fun. Their financial goals are often tied to exciting future plans, like saving for a dream vacation.Choleric (Red): Cholerics are goal-driven visionaries. Give them a financial target, and they'll hit it with precision, always eager to set the next goal.Melancholic (Blue): Melancholics crave safety and order. They plan meticulously, ensuring that they are financially prepared for all eventualities.Phlegmatic (Green): Phlegmatics seek harmony and tend to have a laid-back attitude toward money. They are often the most challenging to get on a budget but can be motivated by long-term, meaningful goals.Communication and Finances: The ConnectionUnderstanding your own temperament—and that of your spouse or financial advisor—can lead to more effective communication, especially when it comes to managing money. For example, if you are married to a melancholic, they'll want to feel financially safe, which means they'll be focused on saving and planning for the future. Conversely, a sanguine needs a fun or people-centered motivation to stick to a financial plan.By learning to "speak" each other's language, couples can create harmony in their finances, much like they do in other areas of their relationship.Strengths, Weaknesses, and Innate NeedsEach temperament has a set of strengths and weaknesses. While our weaknesses may seem burdensome, they help us appreciate and manage our strengths. For example, a melancholic's focus on safety can sometimes lead to anxiety, but when managed well, it ensures a secure financial future.Another concept we should familiarize ourselves with is "innate needs"—non-negotiable motivators that drive each temperament. Knowing these needs can improve communication and reduce conflict in relationships, particularly when discussing money.Ephesians 4:29 reminds us:“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”Let's choose our words wisely, building others up according to their temperament and needs.A Path to Stronger Communication and Financial HarmonyUnderstanding your temperament and how it colors your communication can profoundly impact your relationships and finances. God has wired each of us uniquely, and by recognizing and respecting these differences, we can better serve and love one another—especially when it comes to managing our money. If you're ready to explore the connection between temperament and communication further, Kathleen's book I Said This, You Heard That: How Your Wiring Colors Your Communication is available wherever books are sold. If you're interested in going deeper, the book also includes a workbook designed to be completed over six weeks. Drop By Drop with James McDonald In today's episode, we're wandering through a reverse osmosis unit. Starting after the pump just when the water enters an 8” RO membrane element itself. Imagine it, if you will. Imagine the water flowing into the feed channels between the membrane envelopes themselves. Imagine the pressure. Think about how suspended solids could behave at this entry point, if they made it beyond the prefilters. How might any suspended solids interact with the feed spacer material or surface of the membrane? Think about where any chlorine allowed into the RO system would start to impact first. What damage could it do? How soon? We have not passed through the RO membrane itself yet. No, we continue to flow down membrane elements, passing from one to another still on the feedwater side of the membrane. As our journey continues, we slow down a little as pure water passes through the membrane, and there's less and less water on our feedwater side. The speed probably picks up as we move from one stage of the array to the next, with a lower number of membrane housings to ensure proper velocity and turbulence to help keep the membrane surfaces clean as we press onward to navigate around the feed channel spacer material. Although we are flowing between the membranes, we may be tempted to flow around the membrane elements themselves, out by the membrane housing. What could stop us, right? But something does. What is that thing? Is it the brine seal? Something we haven't paid much attention to until now is that our water chemistry is changing. It is becoming more concentrated. When does this become a problem? Where does it become a problem? How does it become a problem? As we wind our way through the RO array's stages, membranes, and piping, we finally reach our point of exit where we are called reject or concentrate. From here, we are either sent down the drain or sometimes captured and reused in other applications with less restrictive water quality requirements.

Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Armed with her Powers education, she went on to study at Western Michigan University and the University of Michigan – Flint before moving to California. She married her husband Brad and lived out west for seven years, taking on work as a real estate appraiser and salesperson as they started their lives together. Throughout her career journey, Kathleen always had a guiding passion. From the time she was a child, she had been troubled by miscommunication. Why do so many people seem to talk past each other when they have discussions or arguments? Why do people say things they don't mean? Above all, she wondered why people would say unkind things to each other when it wasn't necessary – especially because, in her view, it was never necessary. She always wanted to help people become better communicators, but it wasn't until she and Brad, her husband, moved to Maryland in 1991 that her passion found direction. During the long car ride from coast to coast, she listened to the work of Florence Littauer, an author of temperament-based books. Littauer's theories sparked an odyssey for Kathleen that, in some ways, is still ongoing today. Kathleen realized that the keys to kind and productive communication are empathy and mutual understanding. Everyone naturally speaks and hears all language from their own individual innate wirings. This means that something said by one person can be interpreted in a completely unique way by another. This gap – the space between what is said and what is heard – is often the root of conflict in marriages, business relationships, and friendships. She found the solution to this miscommunication in her study of the four temperaments – melancholy, phlegmatic, choleric, and sanguine. The temperaments are a method for classifying individuals based on their natural tendencies, needs, strengths, weaknesses, and innate needs. Each temperament has a different set of these – for example, melancholy individuals thrive on space and silence, whereas sanguines need acceptance and approval to feel fulfilled. Kathleen discovered that understanding the temperaments is vital to healthy communication. First, when someone understands their own temperament, they are better equipped to understand their emotional, spiritual, and social needs. Filling these needs and effectively communicating them to others can help a person operate in their strengths rather than in their weaknesses. Furthermore, understanding the innate wiring of another person allows one to “speak their language.” For example, even if you say the exact same words to a choleric and a phlegmatic, they'll each probably hear something completely different. Kathleen found that teaching people to communicate intentionally in this way is often the key to saving relationships. Knowing the innate needs of others allows us to love them better. Her study was always motivated by her strong faith – specifically, all of her work on communication centers upon the directive passed down by Christ through Apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome words come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up, according to their needs, so that it may benefit those who listen.” Because of her spiritual focus, she partnered with North Point Ministries to spread the message of healthy, temperament-based communication as widely as possible. She has written a workbook, recorded several free videos, and released a six-week bible study called “I Said This, You Heard That” aimed at developing communication skills by educating people about the four temperaments through the framework of Ephesians 4:29 (if you are curious, you can check out her work on her website at isaidyouheard.study). Kathleen regularly travels around the country speaking about and providing training on temperaments and empathetic communication – in total, her work has already impacted millions of relationships worldwide. Currently, Kathleen lives in Georgia with her husband Brad. The two live about an hour north of Atlanta, and enjoy spending time with friends and family, enjoying the lake or working on projects around the house. She has two children, Avery and Brice, who also live in Georgia. Avery, her daughter, graduated from the University of Georgia in 2019 and works as a graphic designer. Brice, her son, started a coding education company after receiving his degree from Georgia Tech in 2020. Kathleen published her second book in 2021 called “A Grown-Up's Guide To Kids' Wiring,” which teaches better communication skills to anyone in the life of a child or teenager: parents, grandparents, coaches, counselors, aunt, uncles, neighbors, etc! Kathleen continues to speak and teach across the country, as well as meet oe-on-one with people for personal coaching. The demand for Kathleen and her content has been so high that she has expanded her team to include a small group of women who speak and teach on her behalf, when needed. She has one thing that she'd like to say to every single person reading this: “The words you use are the words you choose; remember, kind words are cool!”

It's about getting work done.” - Tim Cooper “When something is a frustration, we tend to shortcut or really shortchange how much work is required to get that stuff done. One way to solve this is to surround yourself with people that are great at that thing that frustrates you so I don't pull those shortcuts often and sacrifice the quality of work.” - Tim Cooper “When you are working on a project and skip a stage, you skip people. When you skip people at work, they feel skipped at work. Nobody wants to feel skipped over at work. People don't leave jobs because the strategies are off or the tech isn't as good as it is somewhere else, they leave jobs for emotional reasons. They leave when they feel skipped over, or the workplace is too confusing, or they don't know what their role is, or how to feel successful in the workplace.” - Tim Cooper “Organizational Health is a condition not a destination. Nation, what would you do if your company was told they needed to service ALL of its cleaning towers within the next 14 calendar days? How would you do that and what would it look like? Today's interview is all about how a FedEx letter with Legionella legislation changed a New York water treater's company forever. Join me as I interview Russell Baskin, a Water Treatment, Waterborne Diseases, and Legionella-Compliance Expert who experienced first-hand how Legionella legislation can rock your business to the core if you're not ready for it. Russell graduated from the College of New Jersey with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1988. After college, he went on to work as a Technical Sales and Territory Consultant at a top water treatment firm. After six years, Russell launched his own very own full-service water treatment company, Tower Water. With more than 30 years of involvement with designing, servicing, and testing automatic chemical water treatment injection and filtration systems used to protect commercial, industrial, and institutional water systems against scale, corrosion, biofilm, Legionella, and other waterborne diseases, Russell spearheaded the growth of Tower Water as one of the top water treatment companies in the Northeast and the New York Metro Area. Today, Russell will talk about his 2018 AWT convention presentation, “How ASHRAE 188 Changed His Business” in Orlando, Florida. Russell's involvement in Legionella awareness spans years since he started writing Water Management Plans for the control of Legionella after ASHRAE 188 was released in 2015. He has worked with industry experts like Matt Freije of HCINFO, Janet Stout of Special Pathogens Laboratory, Bill Pearson of Arthur Freedman Associates, and Jay Farmerie of Cyrus Rice in developing Water Management Plans using ASHRAE 12-2000 procedures which he has modified to meet NY State and NY City regulations, including Local Law 77. Bottom line: Russell Baskin is going to tell you why you need to pay attention to the Legionella legislation in the city where you treat water. What should you really be writing in a field service report? Should you write "All is good" while also listing the issues found? How might a badly written field service report haunt you later? How many overly general statements cause later problems? How much detail is too much? Who actually reads your field service reports? Do you ensure all the proper parties are fully aware of any issues or actions needed to be taken on top of just emailing the report out? Does your report actually provide value each visit or is it just a repeat of the last report that the customer finds no value in reading each time? If it's not written down, it didn't happen, and the field service report is high-profile proof of the value you bring when written, communicated, and shared properly. Take this week to think about your field service reports and how you can work to increase their value. Quotes: “When I received the letter, it was devastating to me, I needed to figure it out. I was gonna stay at work until I figure out what we're gonna do, how we're gonna handle this, what the clients are gonna think, and how we're gonna get this done.” - Russell Baskin “In 5 days, I needed to turn over all water treatment reports from the past year.” - Russell Baskin “The difference was that Quebec, Canada had about 90 cooling towers, and New York City had about 10,000 cooling towers. There were not enough people to get the job done.” - Russell Baskin “The ASHRAE 188 legislation was my defining moment at my company.” - Russell Baskin “I heard about ASHRAE 188 for 10 years before the legislation passed, and I always thought I had more time to work out the details.” - Russell Baskin Connect with Russell M.
Five years ago, I recorded Episode 1 with my Bluetooth headset and sent it off for approval on Apple Podcasts. My primary goal when I made the first episode was to create something that industrial water treaters could listen to while they drove from account to account. I wanted to make something that would help water treaters expand their general water treatment knowledge. What I didn't expect when I launched Episode 1 was that this podcast would create a community of people with similar passions. Today, we are not only celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Scaling UP! H2O podcast, but also the fifth birthday of the Scaling UP Nation, our global community of water treaters. It is an honor to celebrate this milestone with you. That's why in this episode, I am going to take a page from Atlanta's Morning News' Scott Slade, and share with you some of my favorite Top 5 lists in three categories: Community Wins, Books written by podcast Guests, and Inspiring Quotes. There were so many amazing guests and inspiring quotes so narrowing it down was a challenge. If you were making a list of the top 5 things about the podcast, what would they be? Please share your lists on social media with the hashtag #ScalingUpH2O . The last five years are dear and near to my heart, and I'm looking forward to spending the next few years with the Scaling UP Nation by “Scaling up our knowledge, so we don't scale up our systems.” Bottom line: Happy 5th anniversary, Scaling UP Nation! I met my lab partner today a couple of years ago at an AWT panel of Young Professionals in the water industry, and I was impressed with the things he does and how he has engineered solutions to problems that many water treaters face. A few years later, he now has his own company that provides bacteria testing, test kits, buffers, and digital refractometers. I'm proud to introduce to you Landon Markes, owner of Fluid Maintenance Solutions LLC. Before making his way to the water treatment industry, Landon worked for a decade in sales in industries such as metalworking and food processing. In 2020, he started his own company called Fluid Maintenance Solutions LLC. Fun fact, Landon actually went to school to become a teacher! Several episodes ago, I did a Pinks and Blues about Dip Slides. Today, Landon is going to share EVEN more information about Dip Slides, including a new space-saving and reliable alternative to Dip Slides… because water treaters never run out of things to talk about when it comes to Dip Slides. Bottom line: Landon Markes is going to share what you need to know about Dip Slides and their alternatives. Your roadside friend, as you travel from client to client. -Trace Plate Counts: Timestamps: Stories from Scaling UP Nation [1:50] Introducing Landon Markes [11:44] Owning a business: What's it really like? Ideally, a sample cooler would be used to collect a boiler water sample, but why? What is lost as the hot water sample changes from the pressure of the boiler to atmospheric pressure? How much water is actually flashing off and is it enough to affect your test results? Is there anything else flashing off the sample besides water? What are the safety concerns? Take this week to think about the impact of taking a hot water sample from a boiler versus a cooled sample. Quotes: “Owning your own business can be absolutely terrifying.” - Landon Markes “I started my company because I found a niche market.” - Landon Markes “Don't keep your Dip Slides in the fridge, keep them at room temperature.” - Landon Markes “Dip Slides are fantastic when they work. When they don't work, things can go wrong.” - Landon Markes “Incubate your Dip Slides. The 48 hours that a Dip Slide takes to have growth is based on incubation.” - Landon Markes “If it's completely saturated with bacteria, that's data. Make decisions based on what the data is.” - Landon Markes Connect with Landon Markes: Phone: (405) 612 7869 Email: landon.markes@fluidmaintenancesolutionsllc.com LinkedIn: in/landon-markes-a0550272 in/fluid-maintenance-solutions-llc-4712081b7 Links Mentioned: 117 The One With Temperament Expert, Kathleen Edelman 179 Another One that Teaches Us to Communicate Better with Others 214 Pinks And Blues: Dip Slides The Rising Tide Mastermind Submit a Show Idea AWT (Association of Water Technologies) How to Apply or Renew Your Passport? Gospel Scripture: (all NIV) Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.
As an esteemed speaker, coach, and communications expert, Kathleen Edelman believes the words you say and the words you hear have the power to shape your life. She joins Fireman Dan to discuss the four temperaments of personality, understanding the power of words, and how to strengthen team chemistry.
In today's episode, we are bringing back Reid Hutchison of HOH Water Technology in Palatine, IL to talk about what YOU, as a professional water treater, can do to change the world. I know that sounds like a lofty goal, and maybe that sounds too high-reaching, but hear me out… industrial water treaters can change the world. Reid is proof that if you prioritize the right things today, you, everyone around you, and the world will be better for it. I'm also happy to announce that the Scaling UP! H2O podcast has created a team for this year's Global 6K for Water happening on Saturday, May 21, and I want YOU to join our team! You can learn more about Team Scaling UP! Nation or make a donation HERE. We'd love for you and your friends, family, and co-workers to join Team Scaling UP! Nation, but if you'd like to make your own Global 6K for Water team for your business/employees please reach out to future podcast guest and Team World Vision representative Steve Spear at sspear@worldvision.org. Bottom line: Reid Hutchison will tell us how water treaters are changing the world, one step at a time. In this week's episode, we're thinking about water loss in a closed loop system. What is an acceptable water loss? Is it 10%, 5%, or even 0%? How does the volume of the system factor into what size water loss is acceptable? What is being lost beyond water with a leak? What can cause a closed loop to lose water? How do you know it's losing water? Are there times when a makeup water meter may miss a low-flow makeup? What things may be introduced with fresh makeup water that could cause problems within the closed loop? What is the cost of the water loss? Do you know the value of the closed loop's water in $/1000 gallons or even $/100 gallons for smaller systems? Knowing the value may help get other parties on board to address the water loss, if necessary. Take this next week to think about water losses in closed loop systems and what you may or may not deem as acceptable. Quotes: “The World Vision 6K for Water: an event that raises awareness and money for clean water efforts in the world, and specifically serves people who do not have access to safe drinking water.” - Reid Hutchison “The World Vision 6K for Water allows people to move their feet and invite others, raise awareness, and raise money to help bring an end to the global water crisis.” - Reid Hutchison “It is called a 6K for water, not a 5K, because 6K is the average distance that folks who do not have access to clean water need to walk daily in order to get water.” - Reid Hutchison “Our biggest goal is to inspire people to participate in the World Vision 6K for Water.” - Reid Hutchison “By 2030, it is possible that the global water crisis will be solved or ended. The only way to reach that goal is to mobilize more people to engage in the effort to help millions of people.” - Reid Hutchison “For those of us in the water treatment industry, it is a great cause to be involved with because it is personal to what we do and each person can make an impact.” - Reid Hutchison “It has been an honor to facilitate a Rising Tide Mastermind group.” - Reid Hutchison “We crowdsourced advice and crowdsource questions to move the ball forward for members of the Rising Tide Mastermind group facing issues.” - Reid Hutchison “I Said This You Heard That instantly made everyone aware and alert to what they were saying and why and how people were receiving what they were saying.” - Reid Hutchison “I Said This You Heard That was immediately practical and helpful.” - Reid Hutchison “I Said This You Heard That: It's simple.

On May 11, 2018, on Episode 38 Mark C. Winters the author of “Rocket Fuel ” was a guest on the show and he introduced the Scaling Up Nation to Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) in a blitz 100 level introductory course. Today I am pleased to have Mark C. Winters back on the podcast to walk us through his 200 level EOS course, which is all about communication. If you are a new listener, or never had the chance to listen to Episode 38, please check it out today. It will immediately change your business, for the better. In today's episode, Mark C. Winters teaches us how the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) can specifically help businesses of 10-250 people climb a growth path to success, start their leadership teams with clear goals in mind, and confidently lay out which employee is going to do what to accomplish the company goals. Additionally, Mark lays out the framework on how Visionaries (those who come up with the ideas) Integrators (those who make visions happen) can communicate better to take their companies to the next level. When Visionaries and Integrators have a great partnership, there is nothing they cannot do. Bottom line: Mark C. Winters gave my company the tools, confidence, and energy we needed to accomplish more than I could have ever envisioned before we connected. My guest today is back for part 2 of a lesson in communication. She is Temperaments expert, and I Said This, You Heard That author, Kathleen Edelman. Her mission is to help people use words that build others up. She teaches that “The words you use are a gift that you give to other people”. That statement should make us want to think about our words more carefully! Today, Kathleen further explains the Four Temperaments and what to do when we experience miscommunication. If you missed part 1 of this interview, please check it out on episode 117. Nation! I cannot have a conversation with Kathleen and not learn something new about the I Said This, You Heard That material. I would consider myself a diligent student of her material for the past two years, and there is always more to learn. Learning about Temperaments is, hands down, one of the best things I have done to understand how my words sound to people as I am speaking with them. It has been a gamechanger in how I communicate with my team and my family and friends. I hope that the next time you’re speaking to someone else, you choose words that are a gift from you to them. 117 The One With Temperament Expert, Kathleen Edelman Episode 117: Show Notes Nation! I am so excited to bring this show to you. As I mentioned in last week's episode, learning about the four temperaments is hand's down one of the most useful things I did this year. It has helped ALL of my relationships. You are probably are asking yourself: What is a Temperament? This show will answer that for you. My guest is Temperament expert, Kathleen Edelman. Her mission is to help people use words that build others up. She says that the words we use when we speak are our gift to others. That statement should make us want to think about our words more carefully! Kathleen explains what the four temperaments are by defining the needs, manipulation techniques, strengths, and weaknesses. This information is invaluable as we related to others. Have you ever had a conversation with someone, and the person takes your meaning in a different way than what you meant to say? I have found that this used to happen to me all the time. After working with Kathleen, I have learned techniques on how to communicate best with others. Kathleen understands that different people respond to words differently. She has mastered how to identify what words to use and gives us the tools to do the same thing.

It's another episode of Whatcha Readin'? Jeff, Christie and DeJuan Brown, Sr. Director, Enterprise Sales for Seismic Software talk about what books they are reading right now: A Company of One, A Course Called Scotland, Radical Candor, Gap Selling, I Said This, You Heard That, and then the big finale, A More Beautiful Question. On today's podcast… 5:55 - Visit jeffbajorek.com/chosenvision for more information on Jeff's upcoming charity event. 7:21 - Jeff's book recommendation is A Company of One by Paul Jarvis. Jeff discusses his struggles with how much to grow his business and what that growth is actually doing. When do you stop and say no in order keep your work/life balance? It makes you think about and declare what's really important. 10:35 - Being an avid golfer, Jeff's 2nd recommendation is A Course Called Scotland by Tom Coyne. Tom is searching for the secret of the game, playing 107 links courses in 56 days in Scotland, the oldest land of golf. He draws parallels between the game of golf and the game of life that we're all playing. 16:18 - Christie re-endorses a couple books from a few episodes ago - Radical Candor by Kim Scott and Gap Selling by Keenan. 18:24 - The book she is diving into deeper is called, I Said This, You Heard That, by Kathleen Edelman and is actually a workbook. This is about how people need to focus in on the words that they say and how our words impact others. 23:12 - DeJuan talks about personality testing/Enneagrams that he's been focused on lately and how it's helped him to understand the negative aspects of the way he communicates with people and the negative ways in which he hears certain things. 28:13 - Being curious about curiosity, DeJuan recommends A More Beautiful Question by Warren Berger. Why is it that after you're 4-5 years old you go from asking 390 questions/day to hardly any and how does that lack of questioning impact your personal life and your business life? Why vs. why not? 35:56 - Asking a question goes from an exercise in curiosity to an exercise in bravery and courage. How can we change that? 38:05 - People don't have a safe place to feel ignorant. 42:38 - The beautiful questions are Why? Why Not? What If? and How? We have a new website.
