Los Arcos to VianaWalking along the Misetta is easy walking but long roads in the heat so you need to make sure you are drinking lots of fluids and taking breaks.Walking though beautiful places such as Sansol and along the way you find little stalls set up where you can donate and get some more refreshments if you need them. You also get your credentials stamped and have a look at the amazing rock formations people who have walked contribute to. There is a monument that people add their own memento as a tribute  to someone they have lost. It really is very heartbreaking as you know they were relatives and friends that are doing the Camino to remember and honor.About 5km out of Viana I met Rosemary and Michael who were also stopping at Viana and they invited me to stay at the church with them, we went and had a nice beer together before arriving at one of the most beautiful places I have seen and the church is breathtaking.A Shower, off to the service and then to share a communal dinner together. OCTUBRE ROSA.

Review of Valllartainfo.com [caption id="attachment_82" align="aligncenter" width="653"] www.vallartainfo.com[/caption] You know that every week I ask you to reach out to me and let me know if you take one of JR’s tours on Vallartainfo.com. I encourage all of you to check out his site and reserve a tour right through him, right? Well Shawn wrote a review that he has allowed me to share with you guys and here it is… A review of a zip line tour I did recently last week!!! First of all I want to say that I booked through vallartainfo.com, a site run by an expat that I know a lot here know personally.... the prices were by far the best I had seen anywhere, my payment went through online seamlessly and it was nice to get quick personal responses to all my questions...!!! Now ...I did the “canopy river tour ...” way up high in the mountain above Rio Cuale...I enjoyed the zip lines just as much as I did the lines at the [caption id="attachment_1896" align="alignright" width="300"] John Russell, JR[/caption] El Eden one (up at old predator set) which I did years previous! The views from the HUGE palapa restaurant were incredible.... amazing views of the Cuale and the massive El Jorrulo suspension bridge from the zip lines....at certain points you can even see the ocean!!! The guides of course were incredible!!! Now the part that made this zip line tour extra special for me....I have never rode an animal of any sort in my life... and upon learning that I would be riding a mule back up the steep mountain at end of tour, well I was a little scared....especially the trail so steep and high up, and me being 6’1” and 230 lbs....I feared for the poor mule..... was I ever in for a treat, what a marvelous , Smart, and incredibly powerful animal.... I cant say enough about the mule but WoW!!! The mule ride may have been as equally thrilling for me as the zip lines!!!! Anyways, I would give this tour a 9 out of 10....(only reason no 10 out of 10 is the price for all the photos they took was in my opinion very pricey) as this seems to be the case with most tours, why can’t they all just drop price 20-30 % and I bet they sell double...anyways....to summarize....Canopy River tour was incredible and booking it online through vallartainfo.com was my best bang for the buck and thanks a ton JR for all the help with questions!!! [caption id="attachment_2242" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Jorullo Bridge[/caption] Thanks Shawn, great review and I just love that place. Great call. Okay, last week I promised another Sean that I would get to the story about my crazy flight from Puerto Vallarta to Tijuana back in 1985. So, I coaxed my wife Debbie to come on with me and recall the experience. So without further ado, here is that story…. Listen to The Conversation with Debbie Kessler There. Isn’t it nice to hear more that Where are we going? Ha! You know, she doesn’t listen to the show. I wonder if she will listen to this one. We’ll see. Let’s get on with the show, shall we? Yes please! I always chat up the taxi drivers. I usually tell them what I do. Most of them have no idea what a podcast is, so I start there with the explanation, and you never know, I may get a great interview from the driver like I did with my taxi driver from El Tuito to Mayto. I told this taxi driver about the place we were going, and about what Melissa did there. I told him it was a Casa de Hogar, an orphanage. And when we drove up in front of the pink colored building with beautiful wrought Iron bars on the windows and doors. I could hear the driver whistling softly under his breath. Casa de Hogar he asked the man in front. “Si”, was the response. He shook his head. “Bonita” he exclaimed. I paid the man and walked to the door where I was asked to wait by the guard while he checked to make sure I was expected. I was directed to Melissa’s office where I set up my recording equipment and had the most remarkable conversation with a true angel on Earth. Let’s go to Puerto Vallarta Mexico, San Luis Potosi #355, in the Primero de Mayo neighborhood, let me introduce you to this remarkable person, Melissa Canez of Corazon de Nina. What a woman yes? Wow! [caption id="attachment_195" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta Mexico[/caption]   History of Dia De Los Muertos This week I have a show all about Día de Los Muertos in Puerto Vallarta. So, Happy Halloween on this 31st of October 2017. What is The Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos observance all about anyway? Let’s have a look at the history and the meaning of this holiday, shall we? The Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico developed from pre-Columbian times and cultures. They had rituals celebrating the deaths of [caption id="attachment_1840" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Dia de Los Muertos in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] ancestors, observed by these civilizations for perhaps as long as 2,500–3,000 years. The festival that developed into the modern Day of the Dead originally fell in the ninth month of the Aztec calendar, about the beginning of August, and was celebrated for an entire month. The festivities were dedicated to the goddess known as the "Lady of the Dead", corresponding to the modern La Calavera Catrina. Or Elegant Skull or Skeleton. Of course, the Catholic Spaniards couldn’t kill the tradition, but did manage to move the date to correspond with All Saint’s Day, so they put up with the pagan activities of the indigenous Mexicans for a change of date. Clever. [caption id="attachment_1851" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Dia de Los Muertos Was Moved From August to November 1st[/caption] By the late 20th century in most regions of Mexico, practices had developed to honor dead children and infants on November 1, and to honor deceased adults on November 2. November 1 is generally referred to as Día de los Inocentes translated it means “Day of the Innocents" but also as Día de los Angelitos or “Day of the Little Angels", November 2 is referred to as Día de los Muertos or Día de los Difuntos  in other words, "Day of the Dead". So what goes on during the Dia de Los Muertos celebrations? Well, Mexicans often build alters in their homes to honor their loved ones passed. They invite the dead to join the family once again by offering their favorite foods, drink, clothing, that they loved when they were alive. Stuff like that. These alters are often constructed in homes or back and front yards, or at the cemetery. What You Need to Build Your Own Alter: A table, shelf or flat surface on which to build your altar Two long sugar cane stalks (or other material) to make an arch Boxes or crates to create different levels A tablecloth and papel picado A photo of the person to whom the altar is dedicated A glass of water Flowers, preferably marigolds Fruit, bread, and other foods Candles and incense Things that the person you're honoring enjoyed in life Cemeteries in and Around Puerto Vallarta, Mexico [caption id="attachment_1919" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Map of Cemeteries in and Around Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] Smells are really important so foods that smelled strong, and like I said, incense too. During the two days, the observant go to cemeteries to visit their dead loved ones. They clean off grave markers and tidy up a bit. Maybe they will bring flowers, often they will build alters to their dead loved ones as I said, right there. They bring the favorite food and drink of the dead. Pictures to remember them by. Sometimes you will see mariachi bands in the graveyard at midnight. It’s very strange that’s for sure. The families have a picnic and drink and have a good time. They honor the memories of their dead friends and relatives. Pretty cool. Now earlier we talked about the "Lady of the Dead", corresponding to the modern La Calavera Catrina. Or Elegant Skull or Skeleton. La Calavera Catrina ('Dapper Skeleton', 'Elegant Skull') is a 1910–1913 zinc etching by famous Mexican printmaker, cartoon illustrator and lithographer José Guadalupe Posada. The image depicts a female skeleton dressed only in a hat befitting the upper class outfit of a European of her time. She is portrayed satirically as one of those Mexican natives who, Posada felt, were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the pre-revolution era. She, in particular, has become an icon of the Mexican Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead. And if you are a Grateful Dead Fan, you will recognize that smiling skeleton with the bonnet, at the same Posada Calavera Catrina character. [caption id="attachment_1829" align="aligncenter" width="1075"] La Calavera Catrina[/caption] In Vallarta this year, there will be artists painting faces during the celebrations, along the streets and in special locations. [embed]https://youtu.be/tJ2juXX9NfM[/embed] And there are many different of The Day of The Dead celebrations planned.  On the Malecon, there are many alters set up along the walk. Most of these alters are sponsored by a property or civic group, and they are quite unique with all the traditional trappings of the typical alters, others much more unique and shall we say, unique. These alters are cordoned off with crime scene tape to keep the riff raff away from the alters, but they are really cool to look at. And of course, there is always the regular excitement you see nightly on the Malecon happening, and more. There are parades planned going down the center of the Malecon, with those bigger than life puppet figures with skeleton faces made from papier Mache marching own the streets with calavera Catrina style faces painted on them dancing along the Malecon in the parade. There are concerts at Los Arcos on the Malecon, Events at Lazaro Cardenas Park and Parque Hidalgo, the Pantheon of December 5th as well. I have a link to all of the festivities planned for the two days November 1 and 2nd. [embed]https://www.vallartadaily.com/news/puerto-vallarta/dia-de-los-muertos/[/embed] Many of the theatres have special productions geared towards dressing as well as all of the bars and night clubs. Just another reason to party in Paradise. Right? But…..What Happens If You Experience Your own Day on The Dead in Mexico? Or how about this one, you are a lover of Puerto Vallarta, and want to have your ashes scattered or buried in Paradise? Hummm? Lots of people want that I imagine. Let’s say that you want to bring the ashes, remains of a friend or a family member to Puerto Vallarta Mexico Mexico. What will you need to do?   Requirements to transport ashes to Mexico:   Death Certificate and its notarized translation into Spanish   Cremation Certificate and its notarized translation into Spanish  Please present one photocopy of each of the above-mentioned documents. Keep in mind that all translations must be notarized. Consular certification of all the documents mentioned in this page is free of charge. Then there are Airline Packaging Restrictions. The TSA requires you... Transport the ashes in a box that can be x rayed. You are going to want this to be in your carry-on luggage. No metal or lead lined containers. Also make sure the ashes are stored preferably in a separate plastic bag. All airlines have different requirements so make sure you check with your carrier before you attempt to take the remains into Mexico. Once you are in Vallarta, with the remains of your loved one, you have options.  Some people choose to be interred at the Vallarta Botanical Garden in the Garden of Memories Back in July, Bob Price over at the Garden posted about the Garden of Memories….... “many people love the garden so much that they tell their loved ones "when I die please scatter me at the botanical garden". Well we're at 11 souls so far ( at least that we know of)! we began phase 1 of our " Garden of Memories" this week which are memorial stones in remembrance of a loved departed, Located on a breezy hillside overlooking the Peace Garden. This will also be the site of our Dia de Los Muertos celebration. So, I have pictures of the Garden. It looks pretty cool and the Día de Los Muertos celebrations at the garden have got to be out of this world with all of the flowers they have at their disposal. I have some information about the services offered for instance…. What happens if you are an expat and you die in Puerto Vallarta? Puerto Vallarta is a retirement town for American and Canadian folks, and retired people have a way of slipping off into the unknown, so, I [caption id="attachment_735" align="alignright" width="205"] Pamela Thompson Healthcare Resources PV[/caption] reached out to a friend of the show, Pamela Thompson of Healthcare Resources  PV, and we have an episode with Pamela a couple of months back so if you haven’t heard that one, go back and listen to it. It’s one of the most listened to episodes I believe. So I had a couple of questions for Pamela, and here is how the question and answering went…. Contact Pamela Thompson of Healthcare Resources PV Barry: When a person dies in Vallarta and wants to be buried there, what is required by the government? Pamela: When someone dies here, we highly recommend working with Celis Funeral Home. They work with the family as to whether the deceased will be buried or cremated. Cremation costs $1,050 USD or equivalent in pesos. There is a Mexican death certificate created the Mexican government, only requires a Mexican death certificate. Barry:What is required of the dead person’s family? [caption id="attachment_734" align="alignleft" width="252"] HealthCare Resources, Puerto Vallarta[/caption] Pamela: A Family member does not need to be here in the area but they must be contacted. Only a family member can decide whether it be cremation/burial/send body back to US or Canada. If for example, it is a person living here who absolutely does not want a family member contacted but has a friend/partner, then they need to have a special affidavit (I have a copy) filled out and notarized and kept on file with their person of confidence and as well, preferably with Celis/myself/consular agent. For Canadians, regardless – even if this document is created, the Canadian consulate will still attempt to contact family member(s). Only a family member OR the person on the affidavit (person of confidence) can pick up the deceased person’s remains. For example, if Joe Blow dies and thinks that his neighbor or friend can tell the funeral home to cremate him and pick up his ashes – this cannot be done. Things must be pre-arranged. Barry: Also, on the scattering of ashes, are there any rules as to what is, and what is not allowed in Mexico? Pamela: In reality it is not “legal” but the reality is that it is done all the time. I keep the number of a pangero who does this all the time – takes people out into the bay to scatter ashes. Barry: What if there are no family members representing the deceased. Pamela: A Family member does not need to be here in the area but they must be contacted. Only a family member can decide whether it be cremation/burial/send body back to US or Canada. Pamela: In reality it is not “legal” but the reality is that it is done all the time. I keep the number of a pangero who does this all the time – takes people out into the bay to scatter ashes. Barry: How about sending bodies back to The States or Canada? Pamela: In reality, nothing is required to take ashes on a plane. It is very helpful to have a letter from the consulate and a copy of the Mexican [caption id="attachment_803" align="alignright" width="300"] Pamela Thompson, HealthCare Resources, Puerto Vallarta[/caption] death certificate but there are no TSA requirements. A body is a different story. It used to be easy to send bodies back to the US/Canada and we would send from the airport in Vallarta. No longer. Celis coordinates with the mortuary in the person’s home – or wherever they are going. Then, the body must be transported (by ground) to Guadalajara and go through specific security checks -  and there are only specific airports that can accept the body. Receiving mortuary picks up and takes to their mortuary. I recently had to send a body to Toronto to get a body to a small town in New York. Barry: This may be another show? Pamela: Maybe. I sometimes think I should have an office at Celis. As I said, you should have attended our End of Life Panel – we do this every year and we cover everything from cremation to wills! They have bilingual personnel. Is There a Jewish Cemetery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico? I asked the Rabbi at Chabad of Puerto Vallarta  if there was a Jewish Cemetery in Puerto Vallarta, and he told me that they were in the process of purchasing property for a Jewish Cemetery in Vallarta. We moved here about a year ago, and one of the things we thought would be very important, was to have a Jewish Cemetery here in Puerto Vallarta. We met with a local cemetery here in Puerto Vallarta, Paradise Cemetery, and they have giving us the option to buy a completely separate area within their cemetery, a standalone section, which we could use for the Jewish community. It is an ongoing project, that we intend to complete within the year. We need to raise the funds to be able to buy it. There has been an incredible amount of interest from the local community, and speaking with many local Jewish residents, it is surprising how many of them have no plans set up for them and their family for when they pass on, which makes this project all the more important. He continues…According to Jewish law, the body is considered holy, as it was the container and the home for the soul, thus we give it the utmost respect and attention upon death, being careful to wash it according to Jewish Law and attending to each and every part of it, as carefully as possible, in this same vein Jewish law does not allow the destruction of any Limb or organ, as would be done through cremation and the like. We have had a few cases unfortunately this past year of Jewish visitors that have died while in Puerto Vallarta, and we were thankfully able to arrange with the funeral homes and respected consulates, the proper care according to Jewish law for these individuals. I have links to Chabad and if you are interested in helping them get a Jewish Cemetery in Vallarta, get in touch with them! Chabad of Puerto Vallarta With all this talk of dying in paradise, make sure you have Travel Insurance with repatriation included in the policy to avoid having to pay an arm and a leg, to have your remains flown back to your home town, but if you choose to be buried in a place, where El Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated, every year for like three thousand years, you may consider having your remains, remain in Paradise, Puerto Vallarta. An interview with listeners Reggie and Donna Belew From Tennessee who tell us about their vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Also Puerto Vallarta Businesses Step Up to Support Mexico Earthquake Relief. Also more about Tile Park Puerto Vallarta. Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Listen To The Podcast That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El [caption id="attachment_196" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into the ever so romantic Vista Grill with those dramatic views of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course, at La Palapa you can enjoy that same view of the Los Muertos Pier all day long for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! Today we will be talking with two great guests, listeners Reggie and Donna Belew from Tennessee, but before we get to them let's see what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 26th of September, 2017. Last Tuesday morning, as I was recording the last episode of the podcast, Mexico was hit with its second major earthquake in twelve days. An earthquake with a magnitude estimated to be 7.1 hit approximately 55 km (34 mi) south of the city of Puebla. It caused major damage in the Mexican states of Puebla, Morelos and the Greater Mexico City area, including the collapse of more than forty buildings;  and although Mexico's SASMEX earthquake warning system provided 20 seconds' advance warning in Mexico City, 310 people have been reported killed, 273 of which in Mexico City and surrounding areas, and more than 4,600 were injured. Rescue missions are still underway as I speak. As I said, there had been an even larger earthquake 650 km (400 mi) away off the coast of the state of Chiapas twelve days earlier.   [caption id="attachment_1634" align="alignright" width="253"] Music For Mexico Earthquake Relief[/caption] And although Puerto Vallarta didn’t feel either shake, these earthquakes are devastating for Mexico. Earthquakes happen so fast, and are notorious not only for the death and injuries and fear they strike in people, but also for making people homeless and jobless, destroying homes and businesses. Well, I’ve got to tell you, there are a lot of people in Mexico right now who need our help. There are also quite a number of businesses and individuals in Puerto Vallarta who have teamed up to raise funds for earthquake relief. Manzon Brewery had a fundraiser, Incanto had one, They are having a show and silent auction at Act 2 on October 1st, so if you are in town, go check it out. Lots of great items being auctioned off as well as some great entertainment. I’ll even have an item in the silent auction, an opportunity to have your very own podcast episode dedicated to an individual or even a business in Puerto Vallarta, so if you are interested in having your very own episode, be the highest bidder. If you’re in town, You have to go to that as I said, if you are in town [caption id="attachment_1635" align="alignleft" width="300"] PV Mexico Quake Relief[/caption] And it’s so great to see the people of Vallarta stepping up for a great cause. And if you do choose to give to the Mexican Earthquake Relief effort, be careful who you donate to and who you donate through. Do your homework, and know that it’s not always the big name charities that do the best work for the lowest overhead, so talk to friends, check out these charities on the internet.         [caption id="attachment_1534" align="alignright" width="300"] Natasha Moraga[/caption] Now we all know that timing is everything, and  if you listened to last week’s podcast, I announced a very special project that I’ve got to tell you, got me and many of you really excited. It was the Tile Park project, the Parque de los Azulejos, in Lazaro Cardenes Park. The project is being done by the same person who did the tile wall on the Southside and in the Marina and elsewhere, Natasha Moraga. Well, last week, I announced to you that you could donate to her project, and I gave you instructions on how you could purchase commemorative tiles to be installed in Lazaro Cardenes Park, the money from those purchases, would go to help fund the project? Remember?  How can you forget? I even built a donate page on the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show website. Okay so this earthquake hits, just as the project was going to begin their fundraising efforts, so timing is everything, as I said. [caption id="attachment_1610" align="alignright" width="300"] Donate to Tile Park PV[/caption] Natasha and her people were planning on quite a few fundraising events for their project, but they are also keenly aware of the great need for money to help rebuild and uplift so many effected by these terrible earthquakes. And as I just said, there are numerous events being planned for earthquake relief right here in Vallarta. So, Natasha asked me to let you know that many of the planned fundraising public events will probably wait till probably after the first of the year, just so efforts to help with earthquake relief can proceed in earnest. And I understand her sentiments, but I just don’t want her project to get lost in the shuffle so to speak. Trying not to sound too insensitive here, I think we can think of giving to both the Tile Park project and to earthquake relief, so I’m going to keep pushing and promoting this project, El Parque de Los Azulejos. Listen folks, they are not self-funded and need the money from tile sales, personalized tile sales, to move this project forward. They need to sell commemorative tiles to help fund this project so go to the show notes to last weeks podcast as well as this one, and check out this beautiful park, Lazaro Cardenes Park, all done in beautiful mosaic tiles. [caption id="attachment_1535" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Art Rendering Parque de Azulejos[/caption] Nat Moraga still has promised to sit with me for an interview soon, so will get that to you soon, and I’ll let you know when. As for these nasty earthquakes, these terremotos as they are called in Spanish, these Tremblors, I can definitely relate to these poor folks, I was [caption id="attachment_1538" align="alignright" width="300"] Art Rendering Parque de Azulejos[/caption] born and raised in Los Angeles, and I have lived through several major earthquakes, the latest big one, the Northridge Quake’s epicenter was not more than a ¼ mile from my home in the San Fernando Valley, and that was a 6.8. I’m telling you what, the aftershocks are what keep you up. They can be pretty frightening. Interestingly enough, Tuesday’s quake occurred on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, which killed about 10,000 people, which was by the way, commemorated with a national earthquake drill at 11 a.m. local time, two hours before this earthquake struck. Kinda weird don’t you think? [caption id="attachment_1633" align="aligncenter" width="404"] Meet and Greet at Pour Favor[/caption] I’m planning a meet and greet in Puerto Vallarta for Tuesday, October the 17th at JR’s meeting place, Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse. He doesn’t know this yet, but I’m going to bring my microphones with me again, and have you tell me about what you are doing in paradise. And if you are a business and you want to make a pitch to my audience, you are more than welcome. I just have to lock down my airfare and I will be there. Guess I better tell my wife. Hummm. Yeah that would be best. See you there.   Okay, let’s get to the show and our guests, Reggie and Donna. [caption id="attachment_1638" align="alignleft" width="300"] Reggie & Donna Belew[/caption] I’ve got to say that my most popular podcast episodes are the ones with you listeners telling your stories and giving suggestions, so I’m pretty sure you are going to like my two guests. I love their accents, but hey, I’m from California and we have no accents, least that’s what I’ve been told. Reggie gave me a good review on iTunes and after I mentioned him on one of my podcasts and read his review, he followed up with an email. And it went like this… "My first visit to Puerto Vallarta was in May 1989. I was 20 years old. And I had only had two semesters of Spanish language classes in my then young lifetime.  A college buddy and myself drove over 2,000 miles (one way) from Florence Alabama to Puerto Vallarta. It took four days. And we only stayed a week. But oh my that changed my life. In 1990 I studied at the University of Guadalajara. I was able to visit Puerto Vallarta three times that year. And I traveled around Jalisco including trips to Barra de Navidad, Ameca and Tequila that summer." He also writes that he met JR on his last trip down… So I had to have Reggie on the show. His experiences, going to school in Guadalajara mirrored my own college Spanish experiences as well. When I was going to San Diego State University in 1978, I was given the opportunity to take a 6 week course in Mexico City and get a semester’s college credit for Spanish, so naturally I took advantage of it. It was a wonderful experience. I was totally immersed in the language. We lived with Mexican families, we went to class every day at 9. The Americans learning Spanish upstairs, and the Mexicans learning English downstairs. Then at noon, we dispersed and wen our own ways. I, usually with a hot Latina, and her friend…and her brother..ugh.. from class downstairs, and do stuff get totally immersed in the culture and in the language. [caption id="attachment_1626" align="alignleft" width="534"] Casa Isabel, Puerto Vallarta[/caption] By the time the 6 weeks were up, I was dreaming in Spanish, with English Subtitles.. No Lie! So Reggie did the same thing, only his university had a deal with a place in Guadalajara. Got to say, those were the greatest times. Listen To The Podcast Anyway, let’s get to Reggie and Donna and hear their stories… Gill Givens Books Vallarta's Funniest Man JR's Happy Hour Board [caption id="attachment_1655" align="alignleft" width="300"] JR s Happy Hour Board[/caption]   Restaurants They Liked Cuates y Cuetes La Palapa Freddy's Tucán Things to See and Do Xamie Ximenez the mouth painter at the arches across from the city plaza Puerto Vallarta City Tourism Office offers a walking tour free Tours to the Bell Tower at Our Lady of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Puerto Vallarta By the Rosary Bead Man Gary Thompson Sculpture Tour Print out J R's  Maps Roam the Cuale Island Gringo Gulch  Don't Forget Take good walking shoes Sunscreen Don't be afraid to try to communicate. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be to introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. That’s The Vista Grill that used to be up on the hill overlooking the city?  Well now it has a new vista and that is right on the beach where you get the same Vista Grill Menu, and the fantastic Vista Grill service and it’s right there on the beach with a dramatic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course at La Palapa you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner, with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. ! It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! Today we have a special show but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 31st of August 2017. We are entering what is traditionally the slowest time of the year in Vallarta. September is traditionally the month, actually September and October are the months when many restaurants close up and take some time off before the tourist begins again in earnest the first of November. So if you are coming to town right now, or if you are already in town, you may be noticing some of your favorite restaurants closing up for the month. It’s a good time for these restaurateurs to just shut the doors and take some well-deserved time off. Others have plans to renovate the properties and improve them for the coming season. Whatever the case, this kind of behavior puts those who are looking for a bite to eat in a kind of a pinch. I was reading an article written by my friend Emily where she gives this time of year a particular name, it’s Septi-Hombre. Septi, for September, and Hombre, which in Spanish means hungry. Septihombre. [caption id="attachment_1399" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Septihombre[/caption] She writes… A friend and I were having dinner together on this particular night, and we were talking about how it seemed that every restaurant in Vallarta would be closed in September. We were joking that we’re gonna starve, because neither of us know how to work a kitchen anymore. Also, we’re both writers. So we thought we were super clever when we came up with “Septi-hambre” (a mix of Septiembre + hambre ‘hunger’), to describe our month upcoming. “We’re gonna starve, it’s gonna be Septi-hambre!! LOL” Lyrical gymnastics. Our personal fave. Anyway, turns out that’s already a thing. Has been for a long time actually. You see, since many of the restaurants close during the month of September, and a lot of people here in Vallarta also work in the service industry, a good percentage of the locals happen to *also* call it Septihambre, because they are actually friggin’ starving during that month. So. Yeah.  I guess it’s funny/ironic that we’ve all come to describe our least favorite month using the exact same bastardized fake word? Funny/not funny. At best. There is no reason anyone in my immediate sphere should starve. So this week everyone is getting ridiculously huge tips, and I hope it’s enough to help tide them over. I don’t have a ton, but I can share a bit. Septihambre is actually not funny at all. Isn’t that sweet? So yes Emily has it right. It’s sometimes this time of year it’s hard to get what you want to eat, where you want to eat, but it’s even harder for those employed in those closed establishments, because they aren’t being paid to work. So they get pretty hungry too. Anyway, I love Emily’s work and I have a link to where she posts some of her essays in the show notes to this episode of the podcast. https://medium.com/ [caption id="attachment_1395" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Natalie and Chanan of Tre Piatti Restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] And speaking about restaurants, I have had some of you contact me about some of the restaurants that I review and are complaining that they take cash only. What’s with that?  Look, if I go down my list of restaurants that I have featured on the show, I must admit, most are cash only establishments, but what have I been telling you?  From the very start what have I always told you guys?  My friends, My buddies, listen to uncle [caption id="attachment_1400" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Use Pesos in Mexico[/caption] Barry,  Tio Barry has been telling you to use cash.  Pesos.  Do I have to give you guys another lesson on money here in Vallarta?  Click To Review. Carry Pesos.  I never, I repeat, never use credit cards when I pay for meals or bar tabs in Puerto Vallarta. Now if you have to use one in a restaurant, ask if they have one of those portable scanners. For me, I just don’t risk having my credit card on the loose in Mexico, in the hands of a server, or a cashier. It’s just too risky. So, Chenando's, cash only, Una Familia, cash only, I think Bella Napoli is cash only too but hey. Bring pesos amigos. Pesos. It’s hurricane season here in Mexico and I thought that with Hurricane Harvey running amuck in Texas, and you listeners in Texas, we are thinking about you all,  and praying that all will be well with you. I thought I would talk about hurricanes in Puerto Vallarta. The last hurricane to sweep by Puerto Vallarta was Hurricane Patricia. Patricia came in October of 2015 and I was in Puerto Vallarta with Debbie at the time. We were staying in a place called Casa del Puente. I have a video of the place in my show notes if you want to see it. It was pretty wild, we didn’t even know about the hurricane until it was almost upon us. The evening before Patricia was to make landfall, Debbie and I came out of our apartment and we were hearing the strangest sounds. All around, we could hear the sound of packing tape, the clear plastic stuff that the get in rolls?  Well, we were watching all these people  stretching packing tape over all their windows. We start looking at one another and thinking, what the hell is going on here? So I ask someone with tape what he’s doing and he looks at me and says, getting ready for the Hurricane. What? [embed]https://youtu.be/_H7DL9J2Ph8[/embed] We walk down the Malecon and they are boarding up the large windows of the shops, they are emptying out the merchandise from the shops and loading the contents into cars and trucks to haul away to safety, over at the nightclubs, they are trying to figure out how to protect these large crystal chandeliers hanging in Mandela Nightclub, it was controlled pandemonium. We headed back to our apartment and turned on our computer and were just dumbstruck were looking at the news reports, the BIGGEST STORM EVER was bearing down on Puerto Vallarta. [caption id="attachment_1401" align="aligncenter" width="598"] Satellite Photo Courtesy of CNN Patricia[/caption] We looked at each other and thought we better have a plan. We looked at where we were, on the river, 4 blocks from the beach. They were reporting a 40 foot surge and 20 inches of rain or something like that and well, if the worst were to happen like they were reporting, we really weren’t in a good place to wait out a hurricane. We decided to get a bite and go to bed. We would decide what to do in the morning, but in the meantime, we planned to cut out of town if necessary and take a bus to Guadalajara. Woke up to the sound of sirens, and I looked down towards the shore and saw police vehicles and emergency vehicles traveling along the roads along the beach, and they were telling everyone to evacuate. The authorities were going door to door evacuating tourists and residents living along the first 3 blocks up from the ocean, So I said to Debbie, let’s go see where we get the bus to Guadalajara, and we walked down Insurgentes to the Southside, and came upon a stately looking Mexican man standing at the news stand. I asked him where I could catch the bus to Guadalajara, and he looks at me and askd de donde eres, whwere are you from? Los Angeles I say, then he says to me, in Spanish of course, go home to your family. There are planes at the airport to take you home to safety. The bus station you are looking for isn’t here. So Debbie is looking at me and asks, what did he say. So I explained it to her and we both agree that we better pack and skiddadle. We packed pretty fast. We huddled with the caretaker at the property and asked her what she was planning and we agreed to evacuate to be on the safe side. We caught a cab and said, take us to the airport, and he says, no planes at the airport. So he takes us to the bus station. This is where it got fun, It was packed with everyone in town, trying to get out to Guadalajara. We caught a bus to Guadalajara, and as we sat down on the bed to turn on the t.v. To see hat was happening in PV, there was a newsman standing on the Malecon, microphone in hand, reporting no wind, no rain......"Really?" We were thrilled that Puerto Vallarta wasn't blown away, don't get me wrong but the BIGGEST STORM EVER,  was the biggest ...never mind. We looked at each other and decided to take the first bus back to Puerto Vallarta the next morning. Since I missed Patricia, I thought I would ask JR about what happened in Vallarta while I was self evacuating to Guadalajara, and also to find out how he weathered Hurricane Kenna in 2002. Let’s go to JR right now. Listen to The Podcast We finished the last two days of our vacation enjoying Puerto Vallarta with the grateful town. Empty of most vacationers chased away by the wind that never was, but grateful none the less. We bade farewell to Casa Del Puente, disappointed only in the two days we lost to an adventure. I was hoping someday soon to return. It is in a great location. We never had to take a taxi or a bus the entire time we were there. Except to evacuate. We were close to all the great restaurants, and 4 blocks to the beach. [embed]https://youtu.be/sKJW6enA5Nc[/embed]   Okay, that was fun hearing about Hurricane Kenna. Imagine playing chicken with the surf in Lazaro Cardenas Park. Wild. A Day Hike From Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas Beach Subscribe on iTunes & Leave a Good Review Listen to The Podcast     Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be to introducing you to [caption id="attachment_194" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into The Vista Grill. Today we have a special show but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 15th of August, 2017. It’s hot and Humid in paradise and if check out the show notes to this episode, you will find a video I got from Puerto Vallarta News and you can see what I’m talking about when I talk about the wild, blow your mind crazy thunder and lightning that accompany these tropical rainstorms in the summer in Vallarta. Check it out. And if you have had a chance to check out the Cuates y Cuetes webcam, you’ll see some great lightning storms in the late afternoons. The Cuates y Cuetes cam is back in action and good to go. It has been unpredictable of late but they seem to have ironed out their issues. Gosh, I wish I could take up a collection from all you guys and buy these guys a super duper HD cam that would shoot in color and be all bitchen and cool and stuff. I mean, wouldn’t that be great. Set them up [caption id="attachment_57" align="aligncenter" width="940"] Puerto Vallarta Web Cams[/caption] with a great strong signal and we could just sit by our laptops and tablets phones, and get our Puerto Vallarta Fix until we return again in person that is. Now the webcam at Langostinos, the one that swivels around at all hours of the day and night takes approximately 1 and a half minutes to make the full rotation. Problem with that webcam is that it’s kinda herkey - jerkey. It sort of dances around and spends way too much time pointing into the restaurant than it used to. The old cam was fixed and shooting out towards the Los Muertos Pier, and it was the best for a sure sunset. But that has changed. Oh well. Guess we ought to be grateful for what we do have. You can find over 12 different webcams stationed all around the Bajia de Banderas at puertovallartatravelshow.com, or pvtravelshow.com for short at the top of the site click the webcam ta and check out what’s going on, on the ground In Puerto Vallarta this summer. Let me tell you. There’s lot’s going on in Vallarta this summer. A hike from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas Beach. [caption id="attachment_1314" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Click Map[/caption] A couple of you listeners have expressed your desire to hear more about day trips and excursions outside of Puerto Vallarta so I thought today we could talk about taking hike. A hike from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas Beach. This trip is going to take us south of Puerto Vallarta for a bus ride, a hike, a boat ride back from Las Animas to Boca, and then a bus ride home to Vallarta. You can do the whole thing and even more, or you can do just some of this trip and still have a great time so even if a vigorous hike isn’t in the cards for you, this episode still includes you too because I’m going to tell you how everyone here can have a good time doing all, or even part of this journey. So, let’s get started. What You Will Need Good Hiking Shoes Cotton Clothing A Broad Rimmed Hat Sunglasses Insect Repellant DEET Sunblock A Towel Plenty of Bottled Water Bathing Suit Change of Underwear Camera Money/Pesos for bus/boat/food     Video Of The Hike So first of all, let’s talk about the hike itself. If walking up and down stairs isn’t your thing, you aren’t going to like this hike. Period. Don’t even attempt it. You will [caption id="attachment_1291" align="aligncenter" width="608"] Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas Trail[/caption] need to be physically fit, not decathlon fit, but you should be someone who gets regular vigorous exercise, if that’s you then you can do this hike. The difficulty also is directly related to the weather conditions and the time of year you are in Vallarta. For example, I did this hike with my wife and twin brother and his wife last October, and well, it didn’t end well. The tropical heat and humidity was just too much for my hiking buddies, and the hike was even a challenge for me, well, maybe I’ll tell you that story in a little bit, but if I forget to get back to that tale, you can read all about it on my website just click the PV Stories tab and scroll down to the story I call “Mutiny on The Playa”.  Maybe I’ll remember to get back to that but back to the hike. The hike, if you are in reasonably good shape will take you anywhere from an hour and a half with short stops for water and rest, up to 2 ½ - 3 hours at a leisurely pace. [caption id="attachment_710" align="aligncenter" width="800"] A Hike From Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas Beach, or Mutiny on la Playa[/caption] Now if you are staying in town, you should have no problem finding the bus stop. If you’re coming from Nuevo or the Hotel Zone, take a cab into town or a bus if you are savvy enough  to get yourself to the corner of Constitution and Basillio Badillo. The bus stop is on the South East side of the street you will see a couple of orange and white buses lined up that say Mismaloya, Boca de Tomatlan on them, and you will see people lining [caption id="attachment_1316" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Map of the Mismaloya /Boca de Tomatlan Bus Stop[/caption] up to get on these buses. These buses leave in approximately 15 minute intervals. Now a warning to you all, if you go early in the morning, you are likely to be [caption id="attachment_1331" align="alignright" width="665"] Bus Stop For Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlan[/caption] competing with many a Mexican on his or her way to work out of the city. My suggestion would be to go after 9 in the morning, but if you are an early riser, you can try out the local flavor. You pick.  The bus ride is going to set you back 8 pesos so be ready for that. Remember, the driver will give you change; just don’t give him a 5oo peso note, or a 200 peso note for that matter either. The best advice I can give is to find a seat on the right side of the bus. That way, you will have a wonderful view of the coastline as you make your way south towards Boca de Tomatlan. The bus will be stopping all along the route. Keep in mind buses will stop, if they can, almost anywhere along the road, and by the way if you find yourself out along the road and need to have a bus stop for you, make sure you’re standing where the bus can stop safely, and point to the ground in front of you, while looking at the driver. According to JR, the bus will stop. Anyway, these buses fill up pretty fast as they make their way along the coast to Mismaloya. They are picking folks up from the hotels, and condos and resorts along highway 200 south, the Carraterra a Barra de Navidad. They stop at Mismaloya, about 30 minutes from PV, in front of the Barcelo Resort, then they move on down the [caption id="attachment_1311" align="alignright" width="300"] Boats at Boca de Tomatlan[/caption] road another 10 minutes to Boca de Tomatlan where the bus will park and let everyone off. When you are coming back, it’s right here that you will find that bus when you head back up north to town. Now once you gather all your belongings, you follow the road down a fairly steep street, all the way down to the new Malecon built along the mouth of the river, the Boca. You’re going to encounter  launcha guys, whanting to know if you want a ride to one of the beaches. These guys are there to whisk riders south of here to Las Animas, Yelapa and other coves and beaches along the coast. So let’s say you aren’t in the mood to hike or you can’t physically handle the hike, you can just have a meal at one of the beachside establishments in Boca, or you can negotiate a price to have the boat take you to Las Animas or Yelapa a little further south or any numberof covesand beaches along the coast beyond and before Las Animas. So you can just hop on a Panga and skip the walk, or you can have a bite to eat, then take that panga ride or you can just head back up the hill, find that Mismaloya bus and take her back to Vallarta, having actually been somewhere other than your hotel. See, I have something here for everyone like I promised. [caption id="attachment_1285" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Foot Bridge Over the River[/caption]     But hey, you are a brave and sturdy soul, you’re going to take that hike with me right? So let’s go ahead with the trek. By the way, if you just want to go on the hike with me from your barkalounger, I recorded the whole length of the walk, the entire hour and a half plus of the walk and you can find it in the shownotes to this episode of the show, or you can find it by clicking on the Video tab at the top of my website. First things first, whip out your bug repellant and apply it liberally so you don’t get eaten by mosquitos or black flies. You should consider stopping in one of the new bathrooms they built on the new Malecon there in Boca de Tomatlan. Take care of business because, there’s not really any place along the trail where you will get that chance to go potty again till you get to Las Animas, and believe me, that new bathroom on the new malecon in Boca [caption id="attachment_1283" align="alignright" width="300"] Boca de Tomatlan Malecon[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1286" align="alignleft" width="300"] You Walk Right Past People's Homes Right on the Trail[/caption] is nice and clean. You have to pay a nice person at the door I think 5 or 6 pesos to get entrance, complete with a few sheets of toilet paper, but you get a sparkling clean toilet and bathroom to use. Not so much in Las Animas, So take care of business, make sure you have your water and you walk up the river a short distance until you see a bridge crossing the river. Along the way, to your left you will see where they are doing lots of building. They are building shops and what they hope to become a nice shopping area along the Malecon there. There is a sign post at the bridge with a number of colorful signs pointing across the bridge to Las Animas and Colomitos. There are usually some horses tied up near the bridge. You follow the signs across the bridge and you take a right, and start walking. The trail [caption id="attachment_1328" align="aligncenter" width="741"] Sign Post at the Foot Bridge[/caption] then proceeds to follow the bank of the river, working it’s way up as you walk up steps built into the path, actually you walk right past the front doors of houses built along the Boca. I kinda feel a little funny walking past the houses here because you get the feeling that you are just walking through their front yards and their front porches. It just feels a little weird, but to them, they are used to it. The path is marked pretty well but it’s a good idea to pay close attention as to where you’re going. It’s not hard to make a wrong turn, I mean, eventually, if you do make a wrong turn you will figure it out pretty quickly. Just backtrack and you will be just fine. This part of the hike along the mouth of the river really takes some time. Eventually you will reach a platform built for hikers to take in the sights of the boca and the beach you left behind. You can watch the pangas coming and going in and out of the Boca from this vantage point. It’s not a bad place to sit down and have a sandwich if you brought one. Have a drink, take some pictures, then head back up the trail.  As you get closer to the mouth of the Boca, that sounds stupid. Boca means mouth in Spanish. Okay so as you head up to the mouth of the mouth, never mind, you take the trail up inland cutting through the jungle, hiking up and down steps and stairs, the steepest parts even have built-in handrails to help us hikers climb those steep stairs [caption id="attachment_1266" align="alignright" width="300"] Steep Stairs[/caption] easier. Actually, it’s a pretty nice trail. Now the paths, which for the most part, depending on the time of year are pretty well marked, sometimes seem to disappear and you might need to stop and make sure you didn’t make the wrong turn. But just in case you do happen to slip up, every now and then you will encounter a rock or signpost marked Los Animas or Colomitos to help keep you on track. The Trail finally descends pretty steeply down to the first beach, Colomitos beach, home to the famous Ocean Grill Restaurant. This beach is beautiful. It’s not too big though and if you happen to hit this place on a busy hiking day, it may feel even a little tight. Over to your right as you descend to the beach, you’re going to see the Ocean Grill built into the cliffs. There’s also a raft, disguised as an island bobbing around out in front of the restaurant. It’s not for you. It’s for the folks eating in the restaurant so if you’re going to go for a swim, stay off. And just a warning to those of you Aquatians out there who can’t pass up a dip in the ocean; if you plan on continuing with your hike from here, do yourself a favor and change out of your wet bathing attire and dry off and put on dry clothes, before proceeding on your hike. You will get chaffed something awful if you don’t. Just a little warning to you from ma Kessler here. Bring a bathing suit if you plan on getting in the surf boys and girls. [caption id="attachment_1272" align="alignright" width="300"] Colomitos Beach[/caption] Now I need to tell you about the Ocean Grill. For starters, if you’re thinking hey I hiked in here, I think I’ll just have a bite to eat at the restaurant. Well gotta warn ya now, it aint happening. They won’t feed or water you here folks unless you have a reservation No reservation,  sa cha! Sorry Charlie. By the way, in case you are wondering, it’s pretty difficult to get a same day reservation at the Ocean Grill. Sometimes you need to plan an entire week out f you’re coming in high season. Check out their website if you don’t believe me. In fact; All reservations are made on line where they require a deposit. When you get on-line you get a choice of three seating times. You have the option of taking one of their private Pangas from Boca de Tomatlan to the Ocean Grille, or you can take that strenuous walk that I just described to you. If you do take the hike, make sure you have plenty of time to make that walk before serving time. Just saying! Maybe a 40-45 minute hike to Colomitos Beach. Anyway, a couple of items about the Ocean Grill, the owner has a Great Dane named Wilson. Wilson spends his days on the beach with the guests, and I have to say, that I never have had a chance to meet the grand Dane of the Ocean Grill, but I’m sure the 2 foot high dump I sidestepped on the beach undoubtedly belonged to Mr. Wilson. What a dog!   [caption id="attachment_1268" align="alignleft" width="300"] Colomitos Beach[/caption] The food at the Ocean Grill is excellent as are the tropical drinks they serve. So a trip to The Ocean Grill is an adventure all to itself and when I get a chance, I intend on doing a podcast from the Ocean Grill this winter. So, you could make that reservation a few days before the hike and walk in to the Ocean Grill, Eat and continue on, or just take their boat back to Boca after a swim in the cove and a bob on the artificial island. Again, you have choices and chances to cut the hike short, or continue along the trail. Food for thought. Once you have had enough of Colomitos beach, you look for the path leading up the other side of the playa, you cross the little stream and climb up the rocks to some stairs carved into the side of the cliff, and its back into the jungle for you. This part of the walk is pretty strenuous. Lots of steps and stairs leading up from the beach, then some dirt paths alternating with stone steps and stairs, and  funny looking wooden slat bridges that look kind of suspicious, but they are sturdy. I’ve taken them several times with the same result. I lived to tell the tale. Just watch your footing that’s all. Anyway the trail works it’s way down to another beach, this one bigger and broader. [caption id="attachment_1269" align="aligncenter" width="1184"] Colomitos Beach and the Ocean Grill[/caption] I guess I can tell you that story, the one about the hike with my wife twin and his wife now. Last October, I invited my bro and his wife Jill to Puerto Vallarta. Neither had ever been so I insisted they come along with us and we would treat. So I suggested we take this hike and they all seemed to be in. [caption id="attachment_1274" align="alignright" width="300"] Nice Vistas Along the Trail[/caption] Remember, it was October and it is HOT and HUMID. 91 degrees and it feels like 105, and the humidity, the worst! By the time we hit the Ocean Grille at Playa Colomitos, there are grumblings from my fellow travelers who begin to ask…are we there yet? Oh no! Now I’m really beginning to feel really bad about this. We are supposed to be out for a good time and I am beginning to believe that they think that we are on the Bataan Death March. “Can’t we just eat here?” asks my wife, gesturing to the Ocean Grille with its cute raft like island bobbing out front. “No, you have to make a reservation in advance to get in.” I explain. “The idea was to hike to Las Animas.” According to my recollection, the hardest part of the walk was still ahead of us and I had to break to news to them that we still had a long way to go. We begin to hike up the stairs from down on the beach, and continued into the jungle, then as I described earlier, down to next beach where we found the Catamaran Bora Bora, anchored with all of her partygoers and snorkelers ‘a partyin and snorkelin and lounging around the “secluded” beach. It is there where the mutiny took place. Gary took the initiative. He spotted the guy in charge of the landing party of the Bora Bora, and made a bee-line to him. “How far to Las Animas from here?” “About a 45 minute walk or so.” he is told. “How can we get a boat ride out of here? How much will it cost?” Gary asks. “That depends on the captain. Not sure, maybe 60 pesos each? Maybe 500 pesos total? I will keep an eye out and flag one down for you.” My brother asks, what’s your name? ”  “My name is Mr. Panda!” he proclaims. “Okay Mr. Panda, Gracias!” [caption id="attachment_1270" align="alignright" width="300"] Colomitos Cove and The Ocean Grill[/caption] You can’t imagine how terribly I felt then. I really wanted to finish the hike. I knew that we were already past the hardest part of the trip but I knew I could never convince these hearty travelers that they could make it. Alas, it was no use, they were spent and I could tell that they were going no further. I resigned to make the best of the bad situation and we cooled off in the ocean and waited for Mr. Panda to do his magic and whistle in a panga to pick up the tired gringos and deliver them to a palapa on a beach with an umbrella drink or cervesa, a bowl of chips and guacamole and a cavalcade of beach vendor selling everything from pies to plaster-of-Paris busts of Montezuma and lion’s heads and stuff and junk. And within 10 minutes as a result of a whistle and a wave from Mr. Panda, we had a boat slide up on the sand, parting the partiers just a bit while I negotiated the extraction. I asked the boatman if he could take us the rest of the way to Las Animas, and then wait for us for an hour and a half, then deliver us back to Boca for 500 pesos. He agreed and we all scrambled onto his launch and off we went, warm breeze blowing in our faces. Things were looking up for our party of four. [caption id="attachment_1254" align="alignright" width="300"] La Troza Beach Resort[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1255" align="alignleft" width="776"] La Troza Beach Resort on The Trail to Las Animas[/caption] He took us to Las Animas where we ate at a nice place where we were seated under umbrellas at a comfortable table. By then the mutineers were beginning to get the color back in their cheeks and they were slightly forgiving of moi, their evil taskmaster.  I apologized and promised to never make them go on a hike again. So that was in the heat of the off season, but this time of year, in mid-May, the weather was perfect. The humidity was way down and the weather was in the low to mid 80’s. It was considerably dryer in May than it was in October with all the rain. That was the most suprising part of the hike. How dry the vegetation was this time of year. Let’s face it, by May, Vallarta has been mostly dry since the end of October, so that’s dry. So there, a lesson to you and another chance to change up your itinerary should the hike prove to be too much for you. You can always stand on a beach, and summon a panga to extract you. Just don’t stand on some rocks and summon the poor fella, find a nice, soft sandy beach for him to slide up on. [caption id="attachment_1249" align="alignleft" width="300"] Mike's Beach Club Las Animas[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1248" align="alignleft" width="300"] Mike's Beach Club Las Animas[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1247" align="alignright" width="300"] Las Animas Beach[/caption]   Anyway, the rest of the trail flows alternatively into the jungle and along the sandy beaches. There are a few resorts and private homes you will walk past. Beautiful white sandy beaches and blue, blue ocean. You will climb up the path past a really, nice bar, the Hotelito Mio where you can stop, take a table and sit and sip a cold one before moving along a few hundred more yards south to Las Animas Beach. All along this long beach there are different beachfront establishments with lounge chairs set up, tables under palapas. Great places to sit, eat relax, play in the water, stroll down the beach. Lounge in a hammock. [caption id="attachment_1261" align="alignright" width="300"] Bar at Hotelito Mio[/caption] This place, depending on the season and the day of the week can be pretty crowded. For fewer crowds, always go on a weekday. Once you have had your fill, you can turn around and hike back, or you and do like I do, and walk over to the pier, walk to the end, line up to the right side of the pier and hop in a lancha with a bunch of your new friends, and hang on tight for your return ride, along the coast and back to Boca. Now here’s the thing, here’s where you are going to feel slightly bad because get this, that two hour hike you just took to Las Animas just took that panga ride less than 5 minutes! Less than 5 minutes! Uggh!! I actually have a video of that ride back right here in the show notes for this episode. So I have video of the 1 ½ hour trip by land, and then that 5 minute ride back by sea for you to check out. It’s cool to be able to retrace the hike from the water. But just 5 minutes? Sheesh! As you exit the boat, hand the pilot 60 pesos, and step off the boat onto the dock. From there, hit the bathroom one more time and head up the road, back up to the highway where you more than likely will see a bus waiting to fill up for the ride back to Vallarta. Hand over your 8 pesos and have a seat on the bus, this time, on the left side so you have that great view of the ocean, Los Arcos, the dramatic coastline, all the way back to Basillio Badillo and Constitution. Home Sweet Vallarta! [caption id="attachment_1312" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Barry & Debra at Boca de Tomatlan[/caption]   So that is the hike from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas Beach. A hike that you can do in any number of ways depending on your abilities. So let’s review The hike takes about 2 hours without stops but you will definitely want to stop and enjoy some of the beaches and views and maybe a refreshment along the way. At a minimum take water, towels, sunscreen, bug spray and a camera and wear good walking or hiking shoes. Catch the bus to Boca de Tomatlan from the stop in front of the OXXO at the corner of Basillo Badillo and Constitucion. About 8 ½ pesos. Once in Boca walk down the hill from the bus into town. You can buy drinks and snacks here for the hike and take a look around town. Make your way to the river and footbridge at the foot of town. There will be a post with a bunch of signs; one will point to Las Animas. The Panga ride to Boca back from Las Animas is approximately 60 pesos. The bus back to town is another 8 ½ pesos. [caption id="attachment_1260" align="alignleft" width="1126"] Hotelito Mio[/caption]                   So do the whole hike, just part of it, or just come on the website and check out my videos and pictures, and feel what it’s like to do that hike. Just get out there, and have fun amigos. Okay, that should do it for this week’s episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show.                                         Next week stay tuned for more on the ground reports from Puerto Vallarta Mexico, with travel tips, great restaurant and excursion ideas and more.  Until then, remember, this is an interactive show where I depend on your questions and suggestions about all things Puerto Vallarta. An Interview With Gabino Sandoval; The Pull-Tab Purse Maker on The Malecon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Listen to The Podcast Subscribe on iTunes & Leave a Good Review   Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be to introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado [caption id="attachment_195" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta Mexico[/caption] Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into The Vista Grill. Today we have a special show but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 18th of July, 2017. It’s hot and humid in paradise, but the tourists have not been discouraged. Vallarta is seeing really good numbers even during the off season this year. Looks like the word has gotten out about this town, and hey, there are a lot of great deals on lodging and airfare out there.  Just be ready for rain in the evenings and hot, humid days to lounge by the pool or sit on the beach and enjoy the tropical delights that await you. Sip on that umbrella drink or finish off a bucket of ice cold Pacifico Cerveca while munching on some fresh fish on a stick, or guacamole and chips. Its paradise guys. Anyway, one of my listeners Jeff, is on the ground right now and he's in town for his first July stay in Puerto Vallarta, and he has offered to come on and talk with us about his adventures in paradise in a couple of weeks so stay tuned for that. I'm looking forward to talking with him because he is in the travel industry in the states, and it should be great to get his take.  He’s staying on the Southside at the Los Arcos Suites so he will give us a review of the property and let us know how he did, and what he did in paradise in the July heat. That will be interesting and Jeff seems like a really fun guy so stay tuned. Top Ten Most Unusual Things to do in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico I’m preparing a show for later in the summer with the top ten most unusual things that you don't want to miss when visiting Puerto Vallarta, and I was hoping I could get a little feedback from you guys. What I’m looking for are not the obvious choices like walk on the Malecon, or stroll through Old Town or something obvious like that, and believe me, that show with the obvious top ten things to do  in Puerto Vallarta is coming up, probably in two or three weeks, but what I’m looking for is  an obscure little mentioned kinda unusual, more imaginative suggestion from you guys. So let’s see if we can get that top ten most unusual don’t miss this while you are in Puerto Vallarta list. Well, it will go something like that.  I’m depending on you to help me out here and I have to say that I have never been disappointed by you. So send me your suggestions by clicking on the Contact us tab at the top of the webpage, and sending me off a message. Let us know what we should tell fellow visitors the top ten unusual things to do in Puerto Vallarta are.   Customer Forced to Pay Merchant She Disparaged on Facebook Have you ever gotten on the internet and just destroyed a restaurant or business that did you wrong? Have you ever gone out to Facebook and [caption id="attachment_1080" align="alignright" width="300"] Be Careful Posting Disparaging Rants About Businesses in Mexico[/caption] really laid into business on that platform?  Well…be careful when doing that in Mexico. Check out this article. It was shared with me by my friend Trisha and it's pretty interesting. It’s from a publication called the Yucatan Expat Life, and the article written JULY 7, 2017 goes like this… Mérida, Yucatán — For the first time in Yucatán, a customer who took a complaint to Facebook was found guilty of defamation. Judge Suemy Lizama Sánchez sided with a swimsuit store who said her business was harmed because it was disparaged on social media. The customer’s bitter complaint over a delayed order went “viral,” reports Milenio Novedades. The delay, however, was reportedly beyond the control of the merchant, who had offered a refund before the ruinous post, which the judge agreed caused numerous cancellations from other customers. That cost the company close to 50,000 pesos. The prosecutor does not intervene if a conflict is kept private, but once it’s online, the injured party is entitled to demand proof that the comment is warranted, said Lizama Sánchez. In the hearing, the unnamed customer agreed to pay 2,000 pesos compensation and issue a public apology on Facebook. If the settlement had not been reached, the case would have gone to trial with the defendant facing prison time ranging anywhere from three days to two years, and a fine equivalent of up to 200 days’ minimum wage. The merchant said the apology was the most important part of the settlement. “You have to be careful and be responsible on social networks, especially when you share an image of someone who is accused of some situation like robbery, kidnapping, abuse, among others,” the judge warned. So let that be a warning to you before you start to spout off on social media on the facebags and the tweeters and I don’t know if that will spill into the other review sites like Tripadvisor or YELP, but it sounds like possibly that may be a possibility. Careful before you spout off about a company in Mexico. A precedent has been set it seems. We’ll see. I have a link to the article in the show notes for this episode, #28 of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. http://yucatanexpatlife.com/yucatan-judge-applies-defamation-law-to-facebook-user/ Gabino Sandoval, The Pull-Tab Handbag Maker on The Malecon in Puerto Vallarta [caption id="attachment_1049" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Gabino Sandoval, The Pull Tab Purse Maker on The Malecon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1071" align="aligncenter" width="842"] Location of Gabino's Purse Shop on The Malecon the red arrow[/caption] Okay, let’s get on with the show. In the first episode of the show, and at the end of each show, I ask you listeners for suggestions for show topics and my next guest came from one of your suggestions. My friend Constance from Nanaimo, British Colombia suggested I seek out Gabino. [caption id="attachment_1073" align="alignright" width="300"] Food Stands on The Puerto Vallarta Malecon[/caption] Gabino Sandoval is a guy who makes bags and purses from aluminum can pull-tab tops, and you can find him on the Malecon, just about every night where his table is set up, where he sells his unusual creations. Now for those of you who have never been to Puerto Vallarta, when they talk about The Malecon, they are referring to the boardwalk which in the case of the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta, runs from the Hotel Rosita on the north end, all the way down to La Palapa at the south end. Every night, along the Malecon, you will find street performers like singers, Dancers, Actors posing as, bronze statues like banditos, bicycle riders, swamp creatures, Pirates, there is an acting troupe that puts on quite a show for the Spanish speaking audience at the open air amphitheater under the aches, Los Arcos, right in the center of the Malecon area.  The Malecon is where it’s happening at night in Puerto [caption id="attachment_1048" align="alignleft" width="300"] Gabino Sandoval makes The Pull Tab Purse Maker on The Malecon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] Vallarta. They have food stands set up selling all sorts of treats for the locals and tourists too. Crape stands, dessert stands, corn on the cob, fried bananas, fruit waters, all sorts of eateries with the most interesting items. I have pictures of these in the blog-post for this episode.  As you walk along the Malecon you will also find artists painting and displaying their artwork, handicrafts  sellers and such, and that’s where you will find Gabino.  Actually, you need to look really hard to find him because he's not in a naturally well lit area. His table is right across from Vitea Oceanfront Bistro, great food by the way, and  that's between the sculptures of the female golfer and the folkloric dancers right [caption id="attachment_1090" align="alignright" width="300"] Barry Kessler with Street Performer on The Malecon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexicio[/caption] there on the Malecon. . People walk up to Gabino’s table and do double takes. They need to make sure they are really seeing what they think they are seeing. Handbags, purses, belts, bracelets, all adorned with aluminum can pull tabs and they are incredibly unique and they look really cool. Carefully Gabino explains to the customers who stop at his table, the process he uses to create these purses. He shows them the quality and [caption id="attachment_1054" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Pull-Tab Purses Made By Gabino Sandoval in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] Below find the current Approximate Prices of Gabino's Bags and Accessories as of 07/20/2017 Purse/ Handbag Blue  Approximately 1,100 Pesos or $55 US Large Beach Bags  approximately 1,700 pesos or about $85 US Medium Sized Bags approximately 600 pesos or $30 US Watermelon Bag approximately 1,500 pesos or $75 US 1/2 Watermelon Bag Approximately  1,100 pesos or $55 US Bracelets 40 pesos Coin Purse approximately 200 pesos time and effort that he puts into each piece he makes. Gabino is cool headed; he hears everything that people say as they walk by. Many are amazed, others are amused. I personally am flabbergasted at the imagination and the great designs Gabino has developed . These are brilliant [caption id="attachment_1050" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Gabino Sandoval makes The Pull Tab Purse Maker on The Malecon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] bags guys. They are beautiful and quite the conversation piece if you ask me. Just go to my website to see for yourselves at puertovallartatravelshow.com . So I asked Gabino if he will do an interview with me so I can introduce him and his work to you. So I invited him to the Airbnb apartment I was staying at in the Emiliano Zapata Neighborhood of Old Town, and he came with his wife and two beautiful children to my apartment, with a selection of bags and accessories all made with and adorned with these aluminum pull tab tops. Now if you haven’t lived in a real Mexican neighborhood, you are really missing the real Mexico and you will see what I’m talking about as you will hear the sounds of roosters crowing, dogs barking and stuff and junk like that during the interview. And if you want to see a video of the apartment I stayed at, Casa Vizcardo, I will have a video of the place posted in the show-notes for this episode, #28, so check out my digs in the heart of Vallarta, and let me know if you don’t agree, it’s a pretty cool place. I rented it from the PV Kid, and we are going to have a conversation with Jeff Musto, the PV Kid, pretty soon so stay tuned for that one. [embed]https://youtu.be/LSxZ3Bez2Ww[/embed]   You are going to like Gabino. He took adversity by the horns, shook it up and down and all around, and turned it into a success story. Pamela Thompson of HealthCare Resources in Puerto Vallarta Explains the Importance of Medical Travel Insurance when traveling in Mexico, Medical Tourism and Medical Procedures that Tourists Seek in Puerto Vallarta. Listen to the Podcast! Subscribe on iTunes & Leave a Good Review   Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be to introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado [caption id="attachment_195" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta Mexico[/caption] Restaurant, and now, at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into The Vista Grill. That’s the Vista Grill that used to be up on the hill. Well now it has a new vista and that is right on the beach where you get the same Vista Grill Menu, and the fantastic Vista Grill service and what’s best, is it’s right there on the beach with a dramatic view of the Los Muertos Pier. You’ll recognize the pier with its stunning sail like structure, all lit up at night with beautiful colors. You can enjoy dinner under the stars, with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. ! It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! Today we have a very special guest but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 12th of June, 2017. We had our first sprinkling of the summer the other day, but it was just a tease. This week will be the week the rains return to Vallarta. I’ll be waiting to see if we get rain on my birthday, June 15th  which according to our buddy JR is the beginning of the rainy season. Stay tuned for that report next week. Marigalante Getting a Facelift, New Shows [caption id="attachment_751" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Marigalante Pirate Ship, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] I was reading an article in the Banderas News and it explains the absence of the Marigalene Pirate Ship this last trip down. The boat has been in dry-dock up in Mazatlán, getting her biannual maintenance done. Now I didn’t know this, but the Marigalante is actually a replica of the Santa Maria, one of the three ships Columbus sailed across the Atlantic, and the Marigalante is the Spanish galleon that you may have seen out in the bay. She can be seen sailing out each morning, heading south to the cool beaches beyond Los Arcos, in fact I believe it goes to the beach cove off of the resort Majauetes, that Diana Edelman was talking about in episode 15, the show about vegan dining in Puerto Vallarta.  Then every night you will see the Marigalante in the bay just off  the Malecon, firing off fireworks at around between 9 and 9:30 each evening. [caption id="attachment_791" align="alignright" width="195"] Marigalante Puerto Vallarta[/caption]     [caption id="attachment_752" align="alignright" width="171"] Marigalante Pirate Ship, Drydock Mazatlan[/caption] But don’t  worry, After an absence of almost two months, the Marigalante, will soon return to the waters of Banderas Bay. She'll set sail again on Monday, June 19, 2017 - and she'll do it with a fresh look and all new shows. The last time the Marigalante was out of water was in 2015 when the last set of maintenance was carried out. One of the main tasks that is performed each time the ship is sent for maintenance is to make sure the galleon is completely watertight . This time, the 100% wood galleon had no leaks in its hull but, as the more than 30 species of tropical woods she's made from are constantly either submerged or weathered, it was time to give her some TLC. The scheduled maintenance cost around 10 million pesos (more than $500,000 USD) and involved 60 tons wood, stainless steel rods, over 850 liters of paint and 350 liters of varnish. Additional works included the installation of a new engine; servicing the generator, transmission and propeller; and replacing the bow and stern decks. The team of experts also reinforced the boat's keel and rudder and did some general renovating and redecorating. The Marigalente weighs about 700 tons, has three wooden masts with triangular sails and four decks with a total capacity of 240 passengers. [caption id="attachment_745" align="alignright" width="300"] Marigalante Pirate Ship, Drydock Mazatlan[/caption] I have had several people tell me that although the Pirate ship cruise is a little touristy and somewhat hokey, all of them say that the food was good and the alcohol flowed freely. Sounds good to me. Also, it seems to me that the tour gives you a great opportunity to see the Malecon at night from a whole different perspective. From the ocean looking in. So interesting. Look,  I didn’t want this to turn into a commercial for the Marigalante, but I guess it kinda was. If you have taken the cruise, either during the day or night, send me an email and let me know what you thought of the cruise. How you bought the tickets and how much you paid. Did you think it was worth the money? Let me know. Anyway, I have links and pictures of the Marigalante in drydock in Mazatlan. Check them out at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com episode 23. [caption id="attachment_788" align="alignnone" width="667"] Marigalante Puerto Vallarta[/caption] The Marigalante Website Click Here Travel Insurance in Mexico Okay, how many of you vacationers who travel to Mexico buy travel insurance before you leave for your trip? You don’t? How about this warning from the U.S. [caption id="attachment_749" align="alignright" width="300"] Pamela Thompson, HealthCare Resources, Puerto Vallarta[/caption] State Department… US Citizens should be aware of their rights under Mexican Law. Most Mexican healthcare facilities require payment “up front” prior to performing a procedure. Most hospitals in Mexico do not accept U.S. domestic health insurance or Medicare/Medicaid and will only accept payment via cash, credit, debit card or bank transfer. How about this headline? "Medical bills leave Lafayette woman stranded in Mexico." Or this one...?  "Man trapped in Mexican Hospital with allergic reaction to a jellyfish sting and a $50,000 bill". There are numerous articles you can find with a simple google search that tell us something that many of us never think about when we go to Mexico on vacation. What happens if something happens to us when we are in paradise? In fact, we talked about the subject of hospitals and doctors in Puerto Vallarta with Brad and Tami back on episode 18 I think. They had several incidents where they needed medical attention and they luckily had travel insurance that covered their medical bills. That brings us to our very special guest, Pamela Thompson of HealthCare Resources in Puerto Vallarta. I was introduced to Pamela by several of my friends here [caption id="attachment_734" align="alignright" width="216"] HealthCare Resources, Puerto Vallarta[/caption] who insisted she is the go to person when it comes to healthcare in Puerto Vallarta. She does so much here. You will see that she is involved in so many facets of the medical world, although her main thrust is Medical Tourism, and I was surprised at the types of medical procedures that she arranges for her clients in paradise. Kinda cool really. But this is going to be a very informative conversation and I would like to wrap it up at the end, with a quick review and good, reviewable show notes too. As usual. So let’s go to San Javier Hospital in Puerto Vallarta and join up with Pamela Thompson. Listen to the Podcast That was a lot of great information. The main takeaways... There is no such thing as free medical care here. Doesn’t matter how poor you are. The public system is the IMSS system and the regional hospital, that's the IMSS and Seguro Popular. Seguro Popular was created for the poorest of the [caption id="attachment_797" align="alignright" width="225"] Pamela Thompson[/caption] poor The regional hospital is a sad place. Medicare supplement or HMO doesn’t pay directly outside of the United States. And the air evacuation is very, very expensive and it must be paid upfront, before that plane leave take off down the runway. So it's important to have air evacuation policy or have your insurance include an air evac policy. Just have a good traveler’s insurance. Best Quote "  One of the things that I said in an article I wrote recently is, it's not always the case, but I say, I have seen in the past, especially this past year, a policy sometimes is just as good as the agent you buy it from. Some agents, and I use the term loosely, are don't really know the policy. You know, go to a website that have many of the insurance policies. Pretty much anybody can become an agent. They just make a commission on it. Some of them don't really even understand the policy. You want an agent that's going to be there to help you and that really understands the policy in case you have a claim or you have an emergency. That's really important." Make sure you are with an agent that understands the policy and that goes for an international policy or a Mexican private policy. The doctors Pam works with, total 26 of all specialties. I hope you got as much out of this conversation as I did. Pam Thompson, you are a very special person indeed and the people of Puerto Vallarta are so lucky to have you working for them. And I have the honor of being here with Pamela Thompson of HealthCare Resources in Puerto Vallarta. Thank you so much for coming on the program Pamela. Pam Thompson:          Thank you for having me. Barry Kessler:            Now it seems like you are the go to person whenever, you know, when it happens to pertain to health issues. You seem to be the go to expert, according to all the local community anyway. And so first of all tell us about yourself and what was the path that led you to Puerto Vallarta. Pam Thompson:          I used to come here for vacation. Did that for many, many years. Fell in love with the place like everybody plus the right time to move here, so I did. Almost 28 years ago moved here full time. Worked in tourism for a while. Wanted to get back into healthcare. After doing a few other things in tourism went to work with air evacuation and long story but eventually worked my way into opening in health care resources. Barry Kessler:            Okay so health care resources, you are located where? Pam Thompson:          All over the place. Barry Kessler:            Everywhere? Pam Thompson:          My main office is at Hospital San Javier but I also work with a couple other hospitals. I work with 26 physicians and a couple of diagnostic companies. We are an independent company. Barry Kessler:            Excellent. Okay. Well sure seems like you found your niche here. Pam Thompson:          Oh I think so. Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Well this is a retirement town I would think on top of it being a big tourist destination. Lot of expats are moving here and living here. There is a lot ageing expats here. So what kind of medical plans do these expats get down in Mexico? Pam Thompson:          First I think you would be really surprised that it's not just not the retired and ageing. The past couple of years we have way more people who are, that are much younger than what used to be. Have way more request now for gynecologist and that's not just for menopause, it's for pregnant women. A lot more request for pediatricians. People are moving here that have small children. So it's a wide range of people moving here because now people can work from home, online. Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          They can work, you know, be located anywhere in the world. So we have a wide, it's not just, you know, over 65 type age group anymore Barry Kessler:            Yes. Pam Thompson:          It's a lot of baby boomers and what are they called, millennials now that are moving here Barry Kessler:            Yeah I noticed that. Alright. Well that is interesting and actually some of the restaurant owners that I spoke with are very young. Pam Thompson:          Yeah. Barry Kessler:            They have got young families. They have chosen to come here, start a business. Pam Thompson:          Right. Exactly. Barry Kessler:            Live here, raise their families here. So yeah, you are right. Alright. So what kind of medical insurance do these people get? Pam Thompson:          It varies. There are international policies. These are policies for people that live or work outside of their home country, either full or part time. Sometimes they get a traveler’s insurance. You can purchase a traveler’s insurance for a couple of days up to a year. Sometimes people purchase a Mexican private policy. You have to have permanent residency to purchase of Mexican private policy. Barry Kessler:            Okay. So- Pam Thompson:          It's little bit - the older you get, a little bit more difficult to purchase a policy. I think may be you are going to ask me later but Medicare doesn’t cover anything outside of the United States. Sometimes people, they have Medicare and a supplement, then they recommend that you have a good air evacuation policy so that if you have a critical medical situation, you have an air evac policy that could take you back to the United States. Barry Kessler:            Yeah that's smart. So you would say supplement what you have in the States if you are receiving Medicare Medicaid then basically have yourself something that you can use local for the small stuff.  Pam Thompson:          The most important thing is to have a plan. Do your homework. See what works here. I am sorry. See what’s covered here. See what’s accepted here. Make a plan before you come down or as soon as you get here. Barry Kessler:            Okay. good. Alright. And so how would you go back doing that? I mean, you just go online, you pick up the phone and?  Pam Thompson:          Well, we have a lot of people email me ahead of time or may be when they come down and they are looking either for a place to rent or they are looking a property to buy. Lot of times real estate agencies will or their real estate agents will give their clients my number and we are more than happy to sit down, have a chat, go over general health care information. It's not just about health insurance, it's about making sure, maybe you have medications that you have to take. We want to make sure they are available here. You want to check and see how much they cost. Maybe you have  cardiac issues. You want to make sure that, you know, you connect with the cardiologist here. There is lot of different issues you want to make sure and do your homework, have everything in place once you get here. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          Rather than wait until you are in the middle of an emergency. Barry Kessler:            Yeah that's for sure. Well I have your contact information Pam Thompson:          Sure. Barry Kessler:            On the blog post for this particular episode of the Puerto Vallarta travel show. You will be able to find it there and great. Okay so what would you say is the most common issue that you deal with as far as the ageing population here?  Pam Thompson:          Oh my goodness! There are urgent issues and there, the most … Barry Kessler:            Or maybe there isn't. Maybe it's just a, it just runs the gamut. Pam Thompson:          It runs the gamut. Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Okay. Pam Thompson:          Everything from, “I have an ear ache” to “My husband just died.” Barry Kessler:            Oh. Pam Thompson:          I mean that it's a wide variety. Barry Kessler:            Yeah, yeah. Pam Thompson:          It's a wide variety. Barry Kessler:            Well there is a ... Pam Thompson:          I never have a boring day. Barry Kessler:            I bet you don't. Well here in Puerto Vallarta would you say that like trip falls and stuff like that, broken ankles, broken wrists and stuff like that are pretty common. Pam Thompson:          Well you keep saying the ageing population... Barry Kessler:            I mean, I mean real. Pam Thompson:          I guess I am in that ageing population. Barry Kessler:            Me too. Pam Thompson:          Yeah we have a lot of, you know, falls, hip replacements, those kind of things. Yeah, orthopedic things. You know the cobblestones are streets are kind of hard to maneuver sometimes. Barry Kessler:            Yeah I know that. Pam Thompson:          So lot of orthopedic issues. I think, I think so. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          No, no there really isn't any one specific. Barry Kessler:            So it's like normal. It's like at home. right? Pam Thompson:          Yeah it's just like in the United States and Canada. Barry Kessler:            Yeah okay. Well speaking of that let’s talk about Mexican citizens. What kind of medical insurance do or what do they have? What do they use for medical issue? Pam Thompson:          There is no such thing as free medical care here. Doesn’t matter how poor you are. There is a vast difference between the public system and the private system. And that's important for the people that are going to be moving here to understand. The public system is the system that all the private hospitals … I mean I am sorry, the private system is what the private hospitals fall under where you and most of the doctors that I work with. The public system is the IMSS system and the regional hospital, that's the IMSS and Seguro Popular. Seguro Popular was created for the poorest of the poor by one of the ex-presidents of Mexico, I don't know how many years ago. But they are in it it's because there is no such as free medical care in Mexico. Many times people, non-Mexicans, have this idea that they are going to come down here and have free medical care or they are going to participate in the IMSS or the Seguro Popular system. They can, but they need to go take a look at the system. It's a vast difference than the private system. The regional hospital is … it's a sad place. I would suggest that they would go and take a look, ask any Mexican what they think about it. We collect donations for their - you need to take your own soap, you need to take your own shampoo. The staff there is wonderful. They work very, very, very hard with minimal resources. Maybe in other places in Mexico it's different. I have heard but it's over crowded, minimal resources. It's not a pleasant place and again the staff works extremely hard with minimal resources. It's not, I would never consider IMSS or Seguro Popular an insurance. But in some cases that's what people have to have. If one goes to a private hospital and there can't pay the bill then we have to send them on to the state hospital.  Barry Kessler:            Well, yes. Pam Thompson:          And -  Barry Kessler:            And that's like going off to Siberia. Pam Thompson:          Well no not really. Not really because they are Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          Going to get the best care that they can give them out there. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          But it's going to be very different than the private system. They have volunteers that will go out and visit them and take soap and food and things like that. I just encourage people to the things that you know, the perfect system to go out and look at it first. Barry Kessler:            Right. Yeah and sounds little scary. Pam Thompson:          It is but and it's a sad situation and mostly for you know, it's for Mexicans and I often times feel bad when I have to send a non-Mexican out there because in reality I feel those beds are for deserving Mexicans. Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          But that's personal feeling.  Barry Kessler:            Well I understand. I agree with you. Alright, so people come here for you know, they don't come here expecting to get sick or anything like that. So people do come down here for medical tourism. You get involved in the medical tourism field? Pam Thompson:          I have many, we have many people that come down specifically to have medical services. It used to be years ago that people just came for plastic surgery or bariatric surgery. Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          Now they come for everything from hip replacement to cataract surgery, knee replacements. And I kind of look at medical tourism as little bit different. In the high season when I have, for example, this last high season I probably scheduled more MRIs than I ever have and that was because I would get emails and emails and phone calls, “Pam, somebody on the beach gave me your phone number. I am from Canada. I have been waiting for months for an MRI …” Barry Kessler:            Ah!! Pam Thompson:          “How soon can I get one here?” Well I can get you scheduled tomorrow. Okay, so then we set it up. To me that's kind of medical tourism as well.  Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          Or the same with a colonoscopy or an endoscopy, you know regular type procedures. So to me diagnostic services are sort of a medical tourism as well. Barry Kessler:            Yeah, although I would … you would never think that. You go, “Oh yeah I am coming here for you know a lift or this or that.” you never think, “Hey I will stop in for an endoscopy” Pam Thompson:          Right. Barry Kessler:            Or whatever. You are right. Pam Thompson:          Or we have people that come in the high season that plan ahead and they go ahead and get all their yearly studies done while they are here. The mammogram, you know their check ups, their physicals, you know, everything, the dermatology checks while they are here. So to me that's medical tourism as well. But as well we also have the plastic surgery and the big surgeries. Barry Kessler:            Yeah and do you get involved in that? Pam Thompson:          Oh yes. Quite often, there is many, you know just google medical tourism and you are going to come up with tons of companies. The difference, I think is that with a med … and most of medical tourism companies are not going to like that I say this but they are the middle man. And of course they are going to take a big chunk.  Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          And they also don't let you speak directly with the destination or the doctor. Where with me, I am in touch with the doctor, I am in the destination, there is not a big commission involved because I work in a different way with my doctors and hospitals. So, so yeah I am kind of all about cutting out that middle man.  Barry Kessler:            Good. Pam Thompson:          So yeah, we have, we do quite a few.  Barry Kessler:            Alright. How do you figure out, like price schedules and stuff like that? Do people …? Obviously they ask before they get it done. Pam Thompson:          Oh they write to me and tell me what they want done and it depends on the procedure. Barry Kessler:            Right. Pam Thompson:          Some of them I already have, I know. Barry Kessler:            Because you do them a lot. Pam Thompson:          Because I know what the doctor is going to charge. Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          We have a lot of package prices with you know, if somebody needs to come to have a hernia, I already know what that doctor’s package is with the hospital. If somebody is going to just you know, it just depends on what the procedure is. If it's a little bit different or if there is a complication, then I just check with the doctor and then I can send it back, send back the price to the patient. Barry Kessler:            Cool, wow! Alright. Well, what would you say is the most common procedure that's done here? Pam Thompson:          I think the most common request that I get is still for plastic surgery. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          That's the most common request. The most common procedure … well … it's still plastic surgery, bariatric surgery, lot more hip and knee replacements. Barry Kessler:            Really? Wow!  Pam Thompson:          I work with a urologist who does a lot of high foo prostate cancer surgery. Bariatric surgery. Well it just kind of varies. Barry Kessler:            Yeah, it sounds like it. Okay, well tell us about the quality of care. I mean, where are the hospitals that you deal with. We are sitting in one right now, San Javier, right? Pam Thompson:          Marina. Barry Kessler:            Right by the Marina. Are they here in Puerto Vallarta, in Guadalajara, where are they? Pam Thompson:          Well I .. for the hospitals that I work with, I actually go inside, I mean I go inside. I see the English speaking in-patients, whose right now it's a little bit less because we are more in a low season. San Javier Marina, across the street from where the cruise ships stop. Also Vallarta Medical Center on the south side of plaza Caracol.  I don't go all the time but also hospital might assist on the south side. Hospital San Javier Riviera in Nuevo Vallarta. We have other good private hospitals in the area. I don't work with them mainly because I don't have time. But they are all the Puerto Vallarta area. Of course there is many, many hospitals in Guadalajara to pick I mean but I am the most familiar with this area. Barry Kessler:            Sure. Pam Thompson:          The doctors I work with, 26 of all specialties. I am really picky about the doctors that I work with. We have every specialty available right now. And now we even have dermatologist, geriatric. I work with a diagnostic center, MRI. I mean it's really hard to kind of say what I do.  Barry Kessler:            Yeah. well sounds you do everything. Pam Thompson:          We do monthly screening clinics of all kinds, weekly speakers programs. Every year we do a huge, it's like a medical expo. Last year we had up to 4000 people attend. Barry Kessler:            Wow! Really? Puerto Vallarta? Really? Pam Thompson:          It's called medical matters. It's at the hotel Marriot. Three large rooms with speakers programs running continually. I spend a lot of time at the funeral home this year. Barry Kessler:            Wow! Pam Thompson:          And do assist, you know the family or the surviving spouse when somebody passes away. And I don't know. Barry Kessler:            Yeah, yeah. Pam Thompson:          It's just everyday it's different. Barry Kessler:            Yeah. So yeah the repatriation thing. So you help along with that too. I guess the whole life cycle happens here. Pam Thompson:          Yes. Barry Kessler:            In Puerto Vallarta. It isn't that different from any other place in the whole wide world, even though Pam Thompson:          Exactly. Barry Kessler:            We are in paradise. Pam Thompson:          Right. Barry Kessler:            Yeah. So besides the expats that live here for years at a time, of course we also have our fair share of snowbirds Pam Thompson:          Right. Barry Kessler:            Here in Puerto Vallarta. They come in from Canada, they come in from the upper reaches of the United States. So what kind of coverage can they get when, you know, their long time rent is not necessarily …? Pam Thompson:          For full time? Full time residence? Barry Kessler:            Well they are not going to be full time. They are going to be like six months out of the year. So … Pam Thompson:          Then they should … okay. Barry Kessler:            Do they need to do what you are talking about before? Pam Thompson:          Then they need a good traveler’s insurance. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          And a traveler’s insurance really needs to be purchased prior to departing their home country. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          So for example, ones that are going to be coming for next winter can start looking at options during the summer. And I always say this is I think Canadians must learn in school that they need to have a traveler’s insurance Barry Kessler:            Really? Pam Thompson:          because it's pretty rare that a Canadian arrives without traveler’s insurance. Barry Kessler:            Ha! Pam Thompson:          It's very rare. Canadians are well prepared and they come with a good traveler’s insurance. People from United States, not so much. Barry Kessler:            Not so much. Pam Thompson:          And it's usually they are the ones that end up with a critical situation and then they are surprised that they are, you know, their Medicare supplement or HMO doesn’t pay directly outside of the United States. So in the summer months or prior to their vacation, whether they are coming for a month, two weeks or six months, they need to start looking at options. There is a lot of very good traveler’s insurance out there. A good traveler’s insurance will include an air evacuation policy in it and as I said Canadians are well aware of traveller’s insurance and their traveller’s insurance almost always includes an air evacuation policy. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Is it expensive? You know? Have you ever -? Pam Thompson:          Traveler’s insurance? Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Have you looked at it? Pam Thompson:          No, they are all very different prices. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          But I mean it's not cheap. Barry Kessler:            Right. Pam Thompson:          But I always, you know, tell people cheap isn't always better. Barry Kessler:            Right. Pam Thompson:          You want one that, you know, if you pay, you know, 10 or 15 bucks for traveler’s insurance obviously they are not going to do too much for you. Barry Kessler:            That might not save your life. Pam Thompson:          That's right. Barry Kessler:            Right. So you might as well, if you are thinking about like living you might consider just getting the right kind. Pam Thompson:          One other thing I always stress to people that it's really probably one of the most important things to know is that insurance here is only accepted for inpatient services. You always, always have to pay out of pocket for consults, emergency room visits, medications, yeah, yeah, x-rays, lab, any of those things. You can turn it in for re-imbursement. That's not a problem. We will help you do that. But it's only accepted as form of payment for inpatient services normally with a minimum 24 hours stay. That's really important. Barry Kessler:            That is important. Pam Thompson:          You can't just go to the doctor and have a consult and flip out your insurance card. The receptionist will look at you kind of funny and say, “I want money.” Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Alright, so are, you know, credit cards accepted here? Pam Thompson:          Yes. Barry Kessler:            Alright. Pam Thompson:          Yes, of course. Barry Kessler:            Alright, right on. well bring your medical insurance and bring your credit card. Pam Thompson:          And your credit card. Barry Kessler:            Okay bring them both. Pam Thompson:          Right.  Barry Kessler:            So you do get involved with the like medical emergency repatriations as well? I imagine. Pam Thompson:          Sure. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          You know we don't do as many air evacuations as we used to because we have, we can take care of the patient here. Barry Kessler:            Yeah you must be … Pam Thompson:          But we do, we have done a few flights this season. There is different reasons why people would be air evacuated back to Canada or the United States. If it's a, going to be a long time recovery like may be a stroke patient and … here we don't have a … we have hospital or home. We don't have a like a long term rehab. Barry Kessler:            There is no rehab centers. Pam Thompson:          Right. So it's going to be really expensive to stay in a, you know hospital. Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          So you know they are going to … it's better to go home. Barry Kessler:            Alright. Pam Thompson:          And a lot of times the family wants the patient home. So then we do a, do an air evacuation. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          And the air evacuation is very, very expensive and it must be paid upfront, before that plane leave take off down the runway. So it's important to have air evacuation policy or have your insurance include an air evac policy. Barry Kessler:            Good. Alright. I think it's a great idea. We talked a little bit about having to be a citizen to get medical benefits. So if somebody was coming down here to live full time you would suggest, you know, getting a residency all straightened away so you can eventually get medical insurance in Mexico? Pam Thompson:          Not necessarily. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          Only if you want to have, I mean it's up to the person if they want to be a resident. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          A permanent resident, that's a personal decision. For medical benefits, in order to apply for Seguro Popular which would cover you only at the state hospital which isn't all that ... Barry Kessler:            Which is the horror show that Pamela was just telling us. Pam Thompson:          No, it's not necessarily a horror show.  Barry Kessler:            Oh alright. Okay, not a horror show. Pam Thompson:          But it's just not … it's very different than the private ...  Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          System. But sometimes that's all anybody can afford. Barry Kessler:            Sure. Pam Thompson:          Then you have to have your residency. But also there is some very good Mexican private policies.  Barry Kessler:            Okay … Pam Thompson:          But you have to ... Barry Kessler:            That's what you are getting at. Pam Thompson:          Yeah. that's not a horror show and there are some good policies but you have to have your permanent residency. Barry Kessler:            Okay. So you do need to get that permanent residency. Pam Thompson:          For that, yeah. Barry Kessler:            For that. Pam Thompson:          Sure. Barry Kessler:            Otherwise you are just doing it with what you were talking before. You are supplementing and you are … Pam Thompson:          And there is also, you know, the other option which is part of the public system but you still have to apply. Some people think they automatically can get it as the IMSS system. IMSS is a government program for people that are employed. Mexican workers by law, their employers pay for them to participate in the system. Barry Kessler:            Interesting. Pam Thompson:          Non-Mexicans can apply but there is a long list of pre-existing conditions. So if one has certain pre-existing conditions they wont qualify for it. Barry Kessler:            You better be healthy. Pam Thompson:          Yeah and they’ve added a lot of pre-existing conditions. So, but that, it's kind of confusing but that's also part of the public system. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Alright. What is …? I think we already talked about the most common issue that you work with day to day, which is everything. You don't really have anything special here. What type of coverage would you get if you are coming to Puerto Vallarta? We have talked … Pam Thompson:          As a visitor? Barry Kessler:            As a visitor. What would you do? Pam Thompson:          Well I would just,I would make sure and have a good traveller- Barry Kessler:            Just get that travelers insurance? Pam Thompson:          Yeah. Barry Kessler:            And it doesn’t really matter if you come in for a week or …? Pam Thompson:          No. Barry Kessler:            Or a month or …? Pam Thompson:          Just have a good traveller’s insurance. Barry Kessler:         Just do it for a week even. Pam Thompson:          Right.  Barry Kessler:            Right? Because There are issues. There are people … Pam Thompson:          Of course. Barry Kessler:            That get in trouble. You know they, they don't have to be long term travelers to have a medical issue. Pam Thompson:          Exactly. Barry Kessler:            Alright. What’s the biggest mistake you can make when you are buying, let’s say, medical insurance in Mexico? Is there something that you would kind of tell people to stay away from or don't do that or …? Pam Thompson:          Well you don't necessarily, you don't know it's … it's kind of hard to say buying medical insurance in Mexico. I will say buying medical insurance period because you are not always going to buy your medical insurance in Mexico. One of the things that I said in an article I wrote recently is, it's not always the case, but I say, I have seen in the past, especially this past year, a policy sometimes is just as good as the agent you buy it from. That's really important. Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          I mean a lot of … many of them you can just go online and purchase. And that probably okay for a short term traveller’s insurance. But if you are purchasing a, you know, a year around policy, you know, regular policy, you are here full time. Make sure you are with an agent that understands the policy and that goes for an international policy or a Mexican private policy. And there are some very good agents in the area. And there is also some people that are just kind of in it to get the commision, they don't really understand the policy. that's an important ... Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          Important point.  Barry Kessler:            Excellent. That's good to know. Is there …? Pam Thompson:          And I don't sell insurance by the way. Barry Kessler:            Okay. Pam Thompson:          That's really important that people know. Barry Kessler:            Well you know everybody has got to Google search. Do it yourselves, everybody. And you should always, you know, follow up with these Google searches with, you know, just find out what their record is. Okay, if it's an insurance company that's got a bad record, believe me there will be a trail of people saying, “Hey stay away from these people.” so do your homework, double check before you buy the policy and like Pamela said get yourselves somebody who is experienced, not a fly by night. Pam Thompson:          I do have a list of reps that I can recommend and that I work with. I can tell you which hospitals work with which insurance companies and I can answer any questions but I don't sell any insurance. Barry Kessler:            Okay, good. Alright well I will have links for you to get hold of Pam and ask her those questions if and when you need it and believe me if you are going to be coming down here, you will have some questions for Pamela. Have we forgotten anything? Is there something that we haven’t touched base on yet about medical here in Puerto Vallarta? Pam Thompson:          Oh probably but I can't remember. I mean anyone is welcome to send me an email. I prefer an email over a phone call. It's really kind of hard to describe what I do. I work closely with both the Canadian and US consulate. The most important thing is do your homework, have an emergency plan, we do a lot of conferences. I do a conference in the fall called ‘End of Life Decisions and Banderas Bay’. That's a real uplifting topic. Barry Kessler:            Oh yeah. I just said, Yeah baby, it's a good one. Pam Thompson:          You know, what to … how to die here but those are the important topic. Barry Kessler:            Yes, yeah well. Pam Thompson:          We do a lot of fun, you know, kind of topics too. I am always looking for a few volunteers, work with the kids with cancer. That's why when you saw at my office it looked like Sounds club. Barry Kessler:            Yeah it did. Pam Thompson:          I am real proud of my doctors. I have worked with them for many years. I think they are really professional. I think they are really good people. I don't know. I think we have covered everything. They are welcome to get on my newsletter list. We send a monthly newsletter of all of our clinics and our speakers programs. Well that's about it. Barry Kessler:            Okay. We will have all of the great links so that you can get in touch with Pamela. Send her an email. Don't pick up the phone and call her. She gets busy … Pam Thompson:          You can call if it's an emergency but ... Barry Kessler:            Yeah. Pam Thompson:          Prefer an email. Barry Kessler:            She is a busy, busy lady you guys. So keep that in mind but also remember that she is here to help. You know, I have spoken with a lot of people in town and a lot of important people in town and more than once I have heard them say, “Pam Thompson saved my life.” Pam Thompson:          Aww!  Barry Kessler:            And you know I think that that says a lot. Pam Thompson:          Thank you. Barry Kessler:            About you and about how people feel about you. Pam Thompson:          Thank you. Barry Kessler:            And I just thank you so much for coming on the program and sharing all this great information with my listeners and once again I will have all that information that you can get a hold of Pam on my website. Thanks again.

Let's re-walk the Camino Francés together! Whereas many of the pilgrim interviews on the podcast take a thematic approach, focusing on a few big picture issues, this series of episodes will dig more into the specifics of walking. This episode picks up where Episode 15 left off, in Los Arcos. Deb Roush of Melbourne, Australia shares stories on the next three stages, leading us into Santo Domingo de la Calzada; David Smith of Dublin, Ireland (clearskiescamino.com) picks up the trail from there and leads us on to Burgos.
