Simple faith in Jesus saves us, not outward acts of religion. On today's episode, Pastor Mike shows us from scripture that many need to lose religion to gain Jesus.
When we consider the objective of religion is to transform the individual into the ideal person we realize that in the process of that transformation the individual losses their uniqueness in order to belong to the community of believers and being accepted into a deep and meaningful relationship with God. One believer must become like the community in order to truly belong to those that are accepted by God, therefore all believers of a religious community exhibit a common method of showing up in the world. They all share the same method of thinking, acting, dressing, perception, hearing, feeling and believing as they have been told this is what God desires. The individual must lose the religious idea of the God approved human and take up the task of finding ones self according to ones own standards and discover God , Self, and Enlightenment outside religion.

In this episode I am joined by my friend Naomi @newmindcoaching_ to talk about her journey of growing up in the church and then leaving the Christian faith. We explore the pressure of social expectations, the importance of tuning in to our own voice and creativity, and overcoming fear. This is an honest conversation about the problems of religion and how they can get in the way of us experiencing God in ways that are authentic to us. It's not to be missed.
The younger generations are simultaneously turning away from God and from America; their belief in God is dwindling, and so, too, their love for America. The natural outcome of this secularized disregard for American Exceptionalism is an emerging batch of leaders who think this nation is just like any other -- which means this nation will soon enough become like any other -- which means this nation will ultimately crumble. Democrats, socialists, Marxists, collectivists and the like actively encourage the younger generations to hate America and to believe in government over God -- and eventually, to believe in government as God. And they actively court this mentality because it gives them the political tools they need to seize powers and control. There is pushback, however, to this leftist wickedness. Tuttle Twins cartoon developer Daniel Harmon talks about the efforts he's making to train children in the pro-American way to go, using the power of the television set.
We look at religion as a source of informing throughout the lifespan of the believer. Religion is a device that assigns identity to both God and humanity according to its own criteria but is religion a reliable source?
Losing Religion? Steve asks the question, “Is the US losing religion?” Religion is gaining popularity, but not in a good way? A new America? Our goal is to apply Biblical Truth to the big issues of the day and to spread the Good News of the Gospel to as many people as possible through the airwaves as well as digitally. This mission, like others, requires funding. So, if you feel led to help support this effort, you can make a tax-deductible donation online HERE. Thank You!

After being hurt and disaffected by her church experience, with thoughts of suicide, how did former Christian Worship Leader Megan Brown, rediscover her value to God and redefine her purpose? All Heart with Paul Cardall speaks to the 24 year old independent singer/songwriter from Hendersonville, Tennessee about her church experience and the music she's recorded that's giving voice to people like Megan who've been hurt. They talk about the challenge some Christians have of not understanding how to separate a healthy and productive relationship with God from a relationship with a Church of imperfect humans whose intentions are not always pure. Megan offers advice for pastors in hopes that the thousands of fans resonating with her songs will be heard and understood in their pain. Listening and understanding the hearts of parishioners over preaching is the most important action Megan believes a Church can do to prevent guilt, shame, anxiety, depression, and suicide.Megan Brown's thought-provoking songs like “If I'm Honest” and “Open Up Your Mind” authentically tackle self-doubt, anxiety, depression and suicide among Christians. Her experiences and gift of music is shaping her purpose, which is to explore songs filled with authenticity and honesty, acknowledging our insecurities, doubt, pain, struggles and scars while endlessly pursuing a relationship with a God who knows our hearts, a God who bleeds, a God who weeps, the God whose own suffering and scars remind us that we are not alone... Psychiatrist and a Pioneer in near-death studies, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, wrote, “The ultimate lesson all of us have to learn is unconditional love, which includes not only others, but ourselves as well.”Megan says, “I make music for people who have been hurt by people in church and have almost left the faith because of it.”Discover Megan on Social MediaTikTok InstagramFacebook YoutubeSpotify Paul Cardall is an artist who has given a new meaning to the phrase, a change of heart and how he used this radical change to take his music to an unexpected place. "At first glance it would appear as though the Movement for Black Lives, or the more general Black Lives Matter movement, has https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/03/black-activism-baltimore-black-church/474822/ (lost its religion)," says Ari Colston of Emory University. "But the Movement for Black Lives, its theories of liberation, and the social and political actions for which it is responsible are far from purely secular or atheistic." In today's episode, we hear from Ari Colston as she puts forward the question of whether the Movement for Black Lives is only a secular movement. Whereas history might associate the Civil Rights Movement with Black middle-class congregations and church leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Colston writes that the Black Lives Matter movement seems to model itself after the more populist and secular organizing frameworks of Ella Baker and the Black Panthers. Many of the millennial and Gen Z members of the movement struggle to reconcile the inactivity of the Judeo-Christian God of the Exodus with the realities of police brutality, mass incarceration, and systemic racism. These activists stand at odds with the Black church's predominantly reformist stances on incarceration and policing and the institutional culture of respectability politics and cisheterosexism. From the outside looking in, this troubled relationship between young Black activists and the church suggests that the “new” iteration of the Black freedom struggle is completely secular. The reality, as Colston shows, is much more complicated--and more sacred--than one might expect. With this push away from religious institutions, what does the future look like for Black activist movements? When we recorded “Losing Religion” last season, we aimed to explore the thoughts, motivations, & interests behind agnosticism & atheism at large. This episode takes a different turn. It poses more questions about the core of what we've largely overlooked, our natural religious instincts. You see, there can be arguments made for the idea that the society & culture we inhabit today, is the most post-Christian society that the world has yet known. And such society & culture does not simply suggest one where agnosticism or atheism serves as the dominant beliefs around. No. Rather, we refer to a society whose history is ingrained in the history, culture, & practices of Christianity BUT rejects, or forgets, the beliefs of Christianity, and does not consider it the basis of either its ethics or its culture. This is why we ask: If God is dead, then what? What happens to our religious instincts? Where do we put that religious longing? It gets even more complex. What does it mean if much of what Christianity teaches is forgotten or unheard of, but still practised in some way? Do we sustain the morals and values of the Christian standard (e.g. equality), but claim those unique values and morals as our own and deny their theistic origins? Also, might there be a paradox in that we use values and morals to easily and intellectually justify certain things that are condemned by a Christian worldview, but then we reject the basis of where those same values and morals emerged? There are two assumptions and beliefs here that we require in order to ask or answer these questions. One is the assumption that religion is truly a natural human instinct. The other is that the foundation of our morals and values today are historically based on Christian values. --- In this episode, we were joined by @drferuke to help us make sense of the potential of living in a society where religion is lost, and what the implications of that can be. This episode required patience, openness, and deep reflection from us, and we hope that this extends to you and that you find it thought-provoking. . . . . As always, if you love listening to the podcast, here's how you can show us some love! Leave us a review where you're listening right now!
If you believe in a “higher power”, what do you think about others who don't? If you don't believe in any “higher power”, what do you think about those who do? It's not very common that people of different beliefs sit down together to discuss and debate their thoughts with the intention to learn and understand. This is what we tried to do in this episode with Sydney. We sat down on our armchairs with Sydney to explore agnostic atheism and scepticism about God and aimed to prove that learning can occur in the presence of varying beliefs or stances about God without having heated or radical debates. Without giving any spoilers, we can promise you that this episode was a fantastic conversation and a sincere discussion that is very much worth a listen regardless of your beliefs. . . . If you enjoy listening to the podcast, here's how you can help! Leave us a review!

Today we're talking about why most Americans are turning away from organized religions. Recent surveys show that for the first time in our history, fewer than half of American adults say they belong to an established church, mosque, synagogue, or other religious institution. The numbers have dropped significantly in the past 20 years. While the shift is most prevalent in younger adults, the trend is consistent across all generations. Today, we're joined by USC professor Diane Winston, who researches religion and spirituality. She'll get into the reasons why people are turning away from established religious groups and what they're leaning on instead. But first, we're speaking with pastor Cory Marquez. He left his old evangelical congregation and started a new church to attract more millennials. We chat about how religion is evolving and why he still thinks faith has a place in our modern society. We all go through seasons where we question what we believe. Many things can trigger these questions of faith and convictions. Some completely loose their belief structures. Others make a rediscovery into a deeper faith. All who go through this journey struggle with the pain, doubt, depression, and loss that is felt through the process. But what happens when your faith is public and part of your career? What happens when it's a pillar of your message? We sat down with Grammy Award winning rapper Lecrae to hear about the deconstruction of his religion and how he rediscovered a faith in Jesus through the brokenness. Lecrae also shares this journey in his new book 'I Am Restored: How I lost my religion but found my faith' along with documenting his rediscovery journey in his documentary 'The Road to Restoration.'Throughout the episode we weave through his journey covering topics including music, faith, Christianity, race, rediscovery, depression and mental health, and how we can build a better community within our churches across the country.Lecrae has collaborated with John Legend, Tori Kelly, YK Osiris, Hulvey, and countless others. What happens when the love we experience doesn't align with love's purest form? In this episode, I speak with a pastor about what love is, where does it come from, and the way in which religion blurs our view of it. We have an honest conversation about the discomfort associated with shedding things that do not serve our highest self and knowing that love is really that foundation of all things.

Christian faith often gets confused with moralism. Moralism is not Christian faith. In fact, moralism is a kind of idolatry, the worship of social structures, rules, or hierarchies of gender or race or belief. On this episode of Rector’s Cupboard we speak with teacher and writer Brenda-Lee Sasaki about moralism in the context of Christian universities.Pushing away from moralism is an often necessary step in spiritual growth. Morality is important in every life, but moralism is a death knell to actual faith.Losing religion (moralism posing as religion) can and often does lead to a deepening of faith. We talk about arbitrary moral codes at religious institutions, why they exist, what they are intended to accomplish and what some of their negative consequences may be.The conversation is intended to be a particular example of the limits of moral codes and statements of faith. If you sign the document about behaviour or belief, does that really seal the deal? Books and articles discussed in this episode: Liberty University Article – NYT, August 2020 Pope Francis on “moral rigidity” - AP News, September 2019 After Evangelicalism: The Path to a New Christianity – David Gushee, 2020 I am Not a Godly Woman – Brenda-Lee Sasaki, SheLoves Magazine, March 2019 Jean Vanier Article – Globe and Mail Article, Februarty 2020 A personal reflection on grappling with the legacy of Jean Vanier - The Conversation, April 2020 Tasting Notes: On this episode we tasted Cardhu 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Jason Elam, host of the Messy Spirituality podcast, has an amazing story. As a pastor, Jason had all the answers, but he didn't have a lot of love. Then something happened. Today, Jason is no longer a pastor and he doesn't have all the answers. But he has discovered the love of God in a way he could never have imagined before.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Jason Elam is a former pastor and host of the Messy Spirituality podcast.Jason is currently writing a book with the working title, From Ashes We Rise: Rebuilding Your Faith When Your Life Burns Down.Jason was constantly afraid of God when he was a child.Jason was often a guest speaker in churches who got people “back into line.”It was by losing his church and losing his marriage that Jason hit “that bottom place.” This is where Jason began to learn that he was loved unconditionally by God.Jason has a near death experience as a child in which he experienced the unconditional acceptance of God. That acceptance always pulled him away from the legalism of his tradition.During the final year of Jason’s ministry, Jason’s church stopped holding worship service. Instead, they held an indoor farmer’s market with food for anyone who needed it.We can only truly know God when we truly know ourselves.Certainty makes preaching easier but living with yourself harder.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Jason Elam:Website: www.messyspirituality.orgBooks mentioned:Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, by Richard RohrThe Gift of Being Yourself, by David BennerSurrender to Love, by David BennerLife of the Beloved, by Henri NouwenInstructions to leave a review of Spiritual Life and Leadership:Click HERE.Click on the link that says, "Listen on Apple Podcasts."In the window that opens, click the button that says, "Open Link." Episode 330 | Dr. Michael Horton and Adriel Sanchez answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com Key questions answered in today's show: 1. The statistics tell us that it seems like the younger you go in our culture, the less people want to identify with any particular religion, much less Christianity. Yet, you have written seculosity arguing that actually we're very religious. What led you to write this book and where do you think these numbers don't tell the whole story? 2. You write, “We want to feel good about ourselves, and so we edit our personalities to maximize the approval of others. Or we exaggerate our hardships to make ourselves seem more heroic or others more villainous.” You call this self-justification. Can you help our audience understand self-justification and how this is connected to a religious impulse? 3. How does a desire to be righteous lead to alienation among people? 4. Tell me how we craving self-justification in parenting? 5. You describe our culture as one where busyness has become a virtue. Can you explain this? 6. You describe performancism as “the assumption, usually unspoken, that there is no distinction between what we do and who we are.” You write, “Your resume isn't a part of your identify; it is your identity. What makes you lovable, indeed what makes your life worth living, is your performance.” This is a problem you point out. Why is this a problem?

#104: Losing Religion Not Family This episode of Cellar Door Skeptics explores the topics of coming out atheist and how to deal with remaining in a marriage with a Christian. Our guest for tonight is Tim Postma whom has agreed to join Tanner to talk about his conservative up bring, divinity school, his loss of faith, and his journey to continue his marriage with his Christian wife. This episode is personal and raw allowing for a story we are hoping others can relate too. Leaving religion always has its trials, but maintain a relationship with an active Christian has it own set of unique compromises. Tim talks about what it is like to raises children in this environment while maintaining his own journey of self discovery into the secular world. #Atheist #Christianity #Religion #Family #ComingOut Subscribe: http://www.spreaker.com/user/cellardoorskeptics Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CellarDoorSkeptics RSS Feed: https://www.spreaker.com/user/8326690/episodes/feed iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/cellar-door-skeptics/id1044088575?mt=2&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 Website: http://cellardoorskeptics.com Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/cellar-door-skeptics Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cellardoorskeptics PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/CellarDoorSkeptics Intro Music: http://aloststateofmind.com/
WE BELIEVE!... that millennials are looking for new options. This week, we're talking the rise in secularism, "nones" (NOT "nuns"), and if pastors in skinny jeans can solve everyones' problems. People say millennials are LOSING RELIGION... but are we?
Kendra Fletcher, author of Lost & Found: Losing Religion and Finding Grace, joins Tray and Mel for episode 114 of the show. Kendra is a homeschooling mother of 8 and popular conference speaker. She and her husband came close to losing 3 of their 8 children over the span of 18 months and, in the process, discovered that their clean and neat Christian formula wasn’t working. Kendra is passionate about addressing the quiet legalism that so easily infiltrates Christian communities and exposes the dangers of focusing on anything but the finished work of Christ. Connect with Kendra on Twitter and at her site, www.kendrafletcher.com. Also make sure to check out her podcast that she does with her husband, Fletch, at Homeschooling IRL.
As I have traversed down the road of Losing Religion, my former life as an American Christian Pastor has haunted me. How I used to consider myself a teacher for others, someone who knew the way. Someone who could be followed. I fear these things now. They have caused me to resist being a leader, a guru, a teacher for others. Even though many have called me these things, Josiah shows me another way. The way of a guide. It's a passive way; it's a path in which we all head down when we follow our desires to be better and different humans. We all are given guides along the way, perhaps through books, relationships, or chance meetings. Even this podcast community. Guides come into our lives and leave our lives as we traverse the different paths we embark. Who or what are your "guides" right now? Lori Fazzino M.A. is a Ph.D. Candidate and Graduate Instructor with the Department of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Lori and I have church past together. Meeting in the megachurch fresh out of high school, in different ways, we pursued the hype within the machine together, and now both find solace outside of religion. Her studies and research are fascinating. This will be a pair of episodes that will encourage those leaving religion and fascinate those in or outside of it. Lori is an agnostic but takes the time to explain why she has taken on a more atheist identity. She feels strongly about being a humanist, in which I too am finding great joy. Lori has an amazing story of being kicked out the church, and now a present and future as a college professor and soon to be Ph.D. in Evangelical Deconversion. She currently teaches Sociology of Religion at UNLV. WE TALK ABOUT: Our Common experience in the same mega-church and interaction with Casey & Wendy Treat at Christian Faith Center. Lori’s conversion story through a mega-church, Covenant Celebration Church, Champions Centre in Tacoma, WA. Losing Religion. Her labeling me a “none” as far as my religious beliefs go. Her doctoral dissertation on the atheist community of Las Vegas. How atheists navigate Las Vegas and the tension she found between religious and non-religious communities. The commonality between the religious community and atheist community. What is truth? Why many unbelievers stay in religion. If you've been a fellow loser or part of the CounterCulture Society, you know by now that we believe, enjoy, and embrace the second chance. Well, this weeks episode is the beginning of a second chance story. Liz had an upbringing and coming out story from the UPC (United Pentecostal Church) years ago. Mat raised in the Baptist Denomination. Both are just a few months removed from their former lives non-denominational youth pastors. But their journey together has led them to now. This is a beautiful, hilarious, misfit, couple that are coming out of the institutional religion that they've known all of their lives boldly joining the journey of what's next.
