Let's be real, death is not something that most of us are comfortable talking about. Who wants to think about the death of family or friends until we absolutely have to? As it turns out, beginning to talk about death before it is strictly necessary can do so much for when we are faced with the reality. To clarify, in this episode of Sunday Sanctuary we are not talking about sudden, unexpected death. This episode we are talking about the eventuality of natural death that faces everyone. Join Petra Bagust as she talks to paliative care nurses and clergy alike, to unpack the advantages of opening ourselves to conversations about the end of life. First up, Petra heads south to talk to Ann, a palliative care nurse (and mum of producer Sam), about her experiences of walking alongside many families as they face the death of a loved one. Later in the episode, Petra is joined by Anglican minister and chaplain to New Zealand's film industry, Kevin Denholm (otherwise affectionately known as Rev Kev ;). Kevin had a slightly different summer to most, leading eight funerals for residents of Aotea/Great Barrier Island. Haere Mai! We had the pleasure of interviewing Hunter Metts over Zoom video!Hunter recently released his new single, "Somehow You're Always There", via Position Music. It will be featured on his upcoming album, out this year.Hunter says on the track, "I was able to pour my heart into ‘Somehow You're Always There', finding therapy in crafting a tribute to my best friend's mom lost to the Covid 19 pandemic. The song became a canvas for my grief, and tells the journey of losing a loved one through memories and emotions. Each note and lyric carried the weight of loss, yet the act of creating offered solace, allowing me to navigate the pain and cherish the enduring connection in the midst of loss."Growing up in a musical family, Hunter Metts began playing the piano at a young age, and eventually started playing guitar and writing his own songs. He produces solely out of a spare room and has a close circle of creators that help with the projects. Hunter's music is characterized by his soulful and emotive vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and acoustic guitar-driven melodies. He cites artists such as Paper Kites, Bon Iver, and Novo Amor as key musical inspirations.Hunter has released several songs independently, including “Nothing to Lose” and “Paper Moon,” which showcase his ability to blend personal storytelling with catchy melodies. Some of his notable collaborations include Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Henry Brill, Tristan Bushman, Chandler Leighton, Dave Thomas Jr, Caleb Hearn, Cody Lovaas, Luke Niccoli, Jonah Kagen, and more.We want to hear from you!

I'm sick of writing descriptions trying to hype you guys up that we're "back." I'm trying to get us on a weekly schedule but it's hard because SOMEBODY refuses to let me just use my laptop for recording, even though it will still sound almost as good, and who cares? He doesn't even listen to the episodes? So what does it matter? And it's not like we have any fans anyway!! Either way, here's this stupid episode, sorry if we swore and I didn't bleep it out, I didn't have time to listen through it. This album is super good though, so actually listen.
Um novo amor na maturidade. Será possível? Para mim, parecia impossível.Eu tinha me separado e minha autoestima estava lá para baixo.

Happy Friday! This week's episode is a little bit different than what you were expecting... In today's episode, I play you the audio of a video I made earlier this year entitled "A Voicemail to Life". “A Voicemail to Life” was inspired by my thoughts these last few months. It seemed that everyone around me was in love and truthfully I felt very left out. After much self-reflection and isolation while in Florida, I realized that I also am in love. Not with a person per se, but with life. My zest for being alive is not like anyone else's I have ever came into contact with. And that is something I am forever grateful for. I challenge everyone, in a relationship or not, to fall in love with their life. You only get one shot at this.

Happy Friday! I know it's been a minute but this one is well worth the wait. As usual, I listened to every artist performing at SXSW (1500+ I think) and filtered it down to only my the best. Narrowing it down was so difficult but I set a strict limit of 15 tracks for this episode. I really should have just named it the "1 Percenters' Episode". It's the cream of the crop here folks. And we've got a sound for everyone. Hip hop to Bon Iver. Afrobeats to Bluegrass. Every year I am blown away by how blown away I am every year. SXSW is the best! Hope you enjoy. Oh and if you want to dig deeper I've got my top 30 playlist on Spotify right next to this top fifteen podcast. All the earlier cuts are a bit more buried but they're there if you want to dig a bit. Be sure to check out the accompanying blog at http://emptychecking/blogspot.com for more stuff! This one's all over the place. I talk about the Superbowl and tell a story about how I thought Prince died almost 20 years before he did. I pay tribute to John Mahoney and that descends into talking about all the terrible things that have happened to Kelsey Grammer over the years. I talk a little about my love of The Office. Then I also get into talking about playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild, poorly explain what amiibos do, and stuff like that... Of course, there's talk about the WWE as well. And I talk about new music from Novo Amor/Ed Tullett. All that, plus a bunch of other stuff! Here are the times for those who wish to skip stuff: 0:00 - Opening remarks and intro music. 3:15 - Music Break 1 - "What Matters Most" off of my "Something to Look Forward To" album. 3:46 - Me pretending to know about football and talking about the Superbowl. (Including a story about how I thought Prince died in 1997 at the 11:48 mark.) 19:06 - Tribute to John Mahoney and a weirdly long examination of my encyclopedic knowledge of the misfortunes that have befallen Kelsey Grammer. 27:22 - I talk about how I like The Office a little. 30:27 - Music Break 2 - "Born in This Town" from my "Out from the Light" album. 30:57 - Gaming talk, with particular emphasis on Zelda: Breath of the Wild 42:57 - Music Break 3 - "El Santo Frente a la Muerte!" from the "Sorry, I Didn't Mean to Shout" release. 43:39 - This week in the WWE. 58:11 - Music Break 4 - "Being There" from the "Things I Meant to Say" album, featuring background vocals by Becky Outlaw, who has just a ridiculously cool last name. 58:43 - Music talk, including my thoughts on "Heiress" by Novo Amor and Ed Tullett 1:07:03 - Outro Music Thanks for your support!
