Weakness within and trials without. A constant battle against the World, the Flesh, and the Devil. This is the common lot of Christian believers in this life. This is the sober reality which ought to push us, each day, to apply for new supplies of the Holy Spirit's power for perseverance. The life of the gospel minister fits this pattern, too, and if anything, the intensity of the battle is greater. Satan has a particular loathing for all members of Christ's body, but especially for its leaders. This week we read two articles on different aspects of perseverance in ministry. They call us all—especially those of us in church office—to fresh vigilance and new earnestness, confident of the Lord's power and willingness to sustain us. Featured Resources: – Andrew Swanson, 'Causes and Cure of Spiritual Decline in the Minister's Life', Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 391 (April 1996). – David N. Jones, 'Maintaining the Earnestness of our Ministry', Banner of Truth Magazine, Issues 239–240 (August–September 1983). – Interview snippets with Gerard Hemmings and Keith Berry recorded at the UK Ministers' Conference 2025 ('A Lifetime in the Ministry') Note: the dates for this year's US West Coast Ministers' Conference are October 21–23, 2025, and those for next year's UK Ministers' Conference are April 20–23, 2026. Earnestness is a hard thing to pull off in music. As much as listeners like to think we know the artists we listen to as actual people, we don't. Most of the time, we're simply left to whatever we hear in the music, to get a feel for if someone is being honest and authentic with how they think and feel. In the social media and AI age, it's getting harder and harder to have trust in the media we consume, and take things at face value. However, with today's guest, NAHreally… it's actually quite easy. It's clear to me that NAHreally is as honest and personable a rapper, as they come. NAHreally, Massachusetts-native now living in Jersey City, first came on my radar through some nice features before really making an imprint on my mind with his collaborative album with Irish-producer, The Expert, on BLIP, one of the best albums of the year He's back with a self-produced new album, Secret Pancake, and joins us today to discuss the seamless creative process for this new album, how it differed from the creation of BLIP, his uniquely down-to-earth approach to rap, distinct flow, and much, much more. It's just me this week, delivering a dispatch that feels more like a voice note to a friend than a typical interview. I centered this around how the so-called "irony epidemic" has shaped the way I work, write, and share my projects in a culture that often resists earnestness. I reflect on the push/pull between sincerity and detachment, the ways we seek validation both online and offline, and how group chats, community, and connection factor into it all. Plus, why being “goo prone” might just be the most human thing of all.Show notes:- Find me on IG: @letitouttt + @katiedalebout | Substack- Magic Mind: get up to 48% off your first subscription or 20% off one-time purchases with code: LETITOUT- Submit a question for our q&a episode: write them here OR record here and we'll play it on the episode! On today's episode I'm joined by writer and fellow internet advice giver, Haley Jakobson. When I teased this episode on insta stories a couple of weeks ago, saying “the guest wrote a book on friendship breakups,” dozens of you guessed it would be Haley, and alas, you were right!!! Haley is the author of OLD ENOUGH, a novel that explores, yes, friendship breakups, but also queerness and bisexuality and being a survivor and growing up and away from who we in the Hello Hayes universe call an OG bestie. As I shared with Haley in our 1hr+ conversation, her depiction of friendship explosions were so vivid and familiar that I felt physically uncomfortable while reading. The novel can be heavy but in the safe and skilled hands of a writer like Haley, I felt held the entire time. OLD ENOUGH has the full weight of a Hello Hayes book recommendation! Our conversation covers what we've learned about ourselves as writers, why friendship break-ups are so painful, a Hello Hayes (and Haley) question about having a crush on a coworker while you're in a relationship, and so much more. I cry at one point, obviously. 0:00 - Who is Haley Jakobson? 4:20 - Selling her first book 8:00 - Stepping in front of the lens 10:30 - Writing about pain 13:23 - Our love of book "Acknowledgments" sections 14:00 - Earnestness is underrated 15:30 - A hate comment that I still think about 19:00 - Friendship break-ups 19:30 - Vow of celibacy from best friendship 25:18 - What does the patriarchy have to do with it? 32:00 - Why Hayes admires Haley & unexpected tears 35:42 - On not being an "Emily Henry" type of writer 37:00 - The duality of Haley & the creation process 41:45 - The worst question aspiring writers ask 43:00 - What Hayes has learned about herself as a writer 45:30 - "Creative foreplay" 45:00 - Spontaneous vs responsive desire 49:23 - Writing sex scenes 53:00 - Hello Hayes letter 1:05:44 - The story behind the title OLD ENOUGH
One of the keys to powerful and effective prayer is when we pray for God's will in earnestness.
A systems theorist walks into an organization and orders playfulness and earnestness. This isn't just a silly take on a joke format—it's a tested method of determining whether or not teams have what it takes to go the distance. As host Steve Cuss explains on this episode of Being Human, too much seriousness on a team tends to lead to rigidity, but playful teams tend to be able to handle ambiguity and challenges. Could the same be true for worship? On this episode, Cuss considers the intentional inefficiency of both play and worship. He explains how overly earnest people and teams tend to be easily offended and lacking in humor, which blocks intimacy, and explores how the same can be true in worship. Playfulness, on the other hand other hand, inherently invites us to lose track of time rather than overemphasize getting everything right. Earnestness. Authenticity. These are the things Nashville-based guitarist Tobin Dale relates to when he considers his chosen craft as a guitarist and playing the music he loves. A true student of rock‘n'roll guitar, Dale has been at it since discovering the Beatles and subsequently picking up the guitar around age 12, growing up in Orlando. In music circles, he's become known as a go-to sideman for touring and sessions when artists are seeking the much-admired weave sound of guitars made popular by the likes of Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones and heard in the sounds of bands like The Faces, Humble Pie, the Black Crowes, Dan Baird projects and more. He first began life as a working musician in Los Angeles after following the cross-country voyage taken by one of his heroes, Tom Petty, who went from central Florida to LA. In California, he first joined the band the Nasty Souls, playing his first live show at the famed Roxy on Sunset at age 21. It was there that the likes of Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Patti Smith, Prince and more had played prior. Alcohol and drugs, of course, were ever-present in the LA music scene. In particular, booze became a particular vice when playing with Caldwell Jack & the Six Pack during a residency at the Kibitz Room. Dale had a wakeup call during an East Coast tour that helped Dale find sobriety. He ultimately moved to Nashville with the love of his life and began finding bigger opportunities through encounters with the likes of Alejandro Escovedo, through producer Julian Raymond at Big Machine Records, touring with Brock Ganyea and ultimately hooking up with the legendary Ray Wylie Hubbard. Dale's relationship with Hubbard started during his time playing on tour with Ganyea, who was opening shows for Hubbard. The iconic Texas songwriter approached Dale after a few performances and asked him to come up on stage to join him on the song “You Got to Move.” Dale asked Hubbard if he wanted, “the Fred McDowell or the Rolling Stones version.” A kinship was formed and the bond has only solidified since. It didn't hurt, of course, that Dale quickly found chemistry with Hubbard's son and bandmate Lucas—the two weaving their guitars seamlessly—and Dale continues playing with Hubbard's band today, such as his recent gigs on the Sirius XM Outlaw Country Cruise (where Dale also played with Andrew Leahey and the Homestead) and at Red Rocks in Colorado. It would seem, at just age 34, Dale is only getting started. He has a big summer ahead, touring with Tuk Smith & the Restless Hearts, picking up gigs here and there in Nashville and across the U.S. But with every consideration, Dale seemingly comes back to his fundamental tenants—particularly, authenticity. We discuss all of this and more on a terrific edition of The Load Out Music podcast with guitarist Tobin Dale. Enjoy!

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Lsusr's Rationality Dojo, published by lsusr on February 13, 2024 on LessWrong. Why aren't there dojos that teach rationality? The Martial Art of Rationality by Eliezer Yudkowsky For the last 6 months, I've been running a dojo that teaches rationality. Why I was at an ACX meetup and met an acolyte who grew up in an evangelical Christian community. He had recently discovered the Sequences and was really excited about this whole Rationality thing. He was very confident in Yudkowsky's teachings. I asked him a couple questions and he realized his beliefs were full of holes. He wondered how he could have understood so little. After all, he had read all of Yudkowsky's Sequences. "I have read 100 books about chess," I said, "Surely I must be a grandmaster by now." At that moment, he was enlightened. The problem The objective of rationality is to become right instead of wrong. Being wrong feels exactly like being right. We are not aware of our own biases. We are not aware of our own mistakes. We are not aware of the lies we tell ourselves. This is almost a tautology. Other people are not tautologically blind to our mistakes in the same way. The simplest way to become less wrong is to have someone else point out your mistakes to you. Except this doesn't actually work. If I say "I'm right," and you say "you're wrong", then we get nowhere. The more we argue, the more frustrated we get. The solution There is a better way. I call it rhetorical aikido. Rhetorical aikido is a Daoist form of Socratic dialogue. The simplest form of rhetorical aikido has three steps: You let someone confidently state a belief A that you know is wrong. You let that same someone confidently state a belief B that contradicts A. You let them notice that A contradicts B. Examples: [I'm the guy in the dark green chair on your right.] Notice that this technique follows Dale Carnegie's guidelines. You smile. You agree. You show genuine interest in the other person. You don't say "You're wrong". You never even say your own beliefs (unless asked). There's nothing for the person to get angry at because you never attacked them. Instead of criticizing, you point out errors indirectly, via a joke. You cheer them on as they dig their own grave. After all, you're trying to lose too. Perhaps more importantly, this technique makes password-guessing impossible. You're playing the bastard offspring of chess + Calvinball. There is no password to guess. The right conditions Rhetorical aikido is useful for diffusing conflicts at family gatherings and the like. If you want to go even further and deprogram people, it's best to have the following conditions: Two-person dialogue. Arbitrarily large groups can watch, but exactly two must be allowed to speak. Curiosity. Both people must be genuinely interested in the subject. I am interested in so many different subjects that I mostly let the other person pick what we talk about. Earnestness. Both people must be genuinely interested in getting at the truth. I start with earnest friends. When I put a camera in front of them, they turn into paragons of rationalist virtue. This whole thing started with off-the-record conversations with my friend Justin. It took a year of iterations to figure out what worked best. Conversations turned into unpublished audio recordings turned into unpublished video recordings turned into structured video dialogues. Eventually, after recording a video, a different friend asked me what I thought about rationality dojos. "Welcome to Lsusr's rationality dojo," I replied, "Today is not your first day." The right topics I've had great conversations about economics, business, racism, homophobia, IQ, war, history, psychology, rationality, ethics, Buddhism, meditation, social skills, Israel, Hamas, antimemetics, and the Matrix. Therapy and self-help are bad top...

While there are multiple honorable mentions along the way, we specifically discuss the TNG episode, "Qpid" (S4E20), the DS9 episode, "Take Me Out to the Holosuite" (S7E4), the VOY episode, "Bride of Chaotica!" (S5E12), the Short Treks episode, "The Trouble with Edward," and the recent 'Very Short Treks' that can be found on the Star Trek Youtube channel. ***Special shout out to Steve Combs for the music featured and remixed throughout this episode. It's the first episode of a brand new year, and in this episode I'm talking about the Ins and Outs lists that we've been seeing all over social media. As well as sharing my own list, which includes beauty, social media etiquette and gatekeeping – I want to bring it back! – I share some ins and outs from other fashion and beauty names, including former guest Mandy Lee, the fashion writer and analyst who's also known as @oldloserinbrooklyn. I also share some comments from Kirbie Johnson, co-host of the Gloss Angeles podcast. Of course, I also want to know your ins and outs – or, tell me if you're over these lists already! DM me @beautymepodcast on Instagram or X and let me know. For me the lists are a bit of fun but can also be useful in the sense that it doesn't hurt to think about our habits from time to time, and see if we might want to change something. If you're listening on Spotify be sure to add your ins and outs in the poll on the show page! Above all else, I hope you enjoyed this episode. If you did, it would be great if you could review, share and subscribe. See you next time! "My identity had to be pending." Kristof Morrow has a hell of a story to tell you. As a survivor of childhood abuse, he went on to become an EMT, a Navy veteran, and a journalist before settling into his new role as a self-published author all while navigating sobriety and learning to live with Tourette's. Faced with a bleak decision, Kristof allowed himself to go inward, ultimately bringing a more gentle expression of himself, his hope, and healing to the surface. Bowen is a little sickstress this week, so he's invited Matt to his new home to record an episode of Las Cultch and contract whatever he has. Stanley cups in hand, the two discuss, well, pop cultural topics! "Such as?" you ask? Well, Chappell Roan and Troye Sivan's latest albums, RHONY, the "sweeps" TV culture of yesteryear, and an oversaturation of the espresso martini. Also, Bowen MET LADY GAGA, Matt has a haunted weekend in Long Island at the Chambers of Hell, and BOWEN MET LADY GAGA. All this, handwriting vs. typing, earnestness vs. earnesty, a live pop songwriting session, and the naming of the Actress of the Millenium. More like OCTOBER flush and OUR flannel cure (the flannel being this episode). Bye! The slumbering conscience of unrenewed men demands the greatest fervency in the preacher. There is a terrible insensibility about spiritual and eternal things which it often seems as if no motives could penetrate. And this stupor is found everywhere. Now, it is true that the Holy Ghost alone can break through this obstacle and arouse the heart to its danger and refuge- but it is also true that the Holv Ghost ordinarily works by means, and that by the means that are naturally the best adapted to accomplish the desired end.
