It's our first ever “What If…? Wednesday”. Isaac Schade and Pac Kilby answer three “what if…” questions about the upcoming 2023-24 UNC college basketball season. What if Elliot Cadeau takes awhile to fully adjust to college basketball? How would that affect the Tar Heels? Will it put more of an onus on RJ Davis running the point? What it mean more time for Seth Trimble? What can Marcus Paige do to ease that transition? Second, what if UNC doesn't utilize its depth early on in the season? How will that affect the Tar Heels in both the short- and long-term? How does that potential hurt the development of Zayden High, Jalen Washington, Jae'lyn Withers, etc? Third, what would happen if the Tar Heels go 0-3 against Tennessee, UConn, and Kentucky? Locked On Tar Heels Discord: https://discord.gg/HU83XYuF Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

The NCAA has decided to allow men's and women's basketball to each add two more in-game assistant coaches. Hubert Davis announced in a press conference last week that in addition to himself, Brad Frederick, Jeff Lebo, and Sean May, Pat Sullivan and Marcus Paige will officially be assistant coaches. Adding those gentlemen to the staff will be a big win for all Tar Heels, from veterans like Armando Bacot and RJ Davis to freshmen Elliot Cadeau and Zayden High to transfers like Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan. Some teams around the nation are adding a General Manager role to their coaching staff. Villanova and Duke are notable examples. Additionally, Coach Courtney Banghart has added a GM. Hubert Davis mentioned that he's considering adding the role but that he isn't ready yet. Four Tar Heels were selected to PFF's preseason 1st Team All-ACC: Drake Maye, Tez Walker, Bryson Nesbit, and Cedric Gray. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

North Carolina has officially announced the hiring of Marcus Paige to the men's basketball staff as the Director of Team and Player Development. Bringing back one of the most beloved Tar Heels of all time to fill the position vacated by Jackie Manuel is a massive boon for Hubert Davis and staff. Perhaps most importantly – so many of the experiences Paige had his freshman season, including stepping into the starting lineup right away, will allow him to provide lots of wisdom and insight Elliot Cadeau who will be in a similar situation. Paul Finebaum, on Monday, suggested that if and when the SEC targets an ACC school, it should be not Florida State or Clemson or Miami, but rather UNC. There's been a rumored connection between Creighton SG Trey Alexander & the Tar Heels, although Alexander is not in the transfer portal. However, Alexander is in the NBA Draft. Despite Alexander not being in the portal, it's still an interesting conversation to have. He is a rising junior who can absolutely fill it up from beyond the arc. Alexander is definitely worth a look, however, Carolina already has six guards on the roster (RJ Davis, Seth Trimble, D'Marco Dunn, Simeon Wilcher, Cormac Ryan, Paxson Wojcik). Should Hubert Davis add another backcourt player to the mix? Alexander is also in the NBA Draft and could theoretically stay in, although he's projected as a mid- to late-second rounder. Coach Pac Kilby shares his thoughts on Marcus Pagie's addition to the staff and why he'll be such an important addition to help the backcourt players. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

This week on “Sports Legends of the Carolinas,” a guest who earned that descriptor throughout a basketball coaching career that spanned half a century at various levels of the game: former University of North Carolina men's head coach Roy Williams. Williams won three national titles as the head coach of the Tar Heels, and retired in 2021 as the only head coach in college basketball history to win more than 400 games at two different schools — 418 at Kansas, and 485 at North Carolina, his alma mater. Williams was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame back in 2007 — before two of his three championships — and the court at the Smith Center in Chapel Hill is named for him. On Part 1 of this wide-ranging interview, Williams reflects on his sudden retirement, his rivalry with former Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, and consoling Marcus Paige after the heartbreaking 2016 title game loss to Villanova. On Part 2 of our conversation, Williams talks about the fellow Tar Heel namesake for his son, Scott; his current role as a doting grandfather; and why it seemed like he never used those dadgum time outs. With Hubert Davis taking over the reins of the North Carolina basketball program and bringing in Jeff Lebo as an assistant, both of whom are top-20 all time at UNC in career free throw percentage, it stands to reason that the Tar Heels would shoot a high free throw percentage as a team under their watchful eyes.Indeed, the 2021-22 Tar Heels shot the second-highest team free throw percentage in Carolina history, finishing at 76.4%. The only team in Carolina history to shoot a higher percentage is the 1983-84 Tar Heels, who hit 78.3% of their free throws. Part of the reason for UNC's success last season is that three of the starters – Leaky Black, Caleb Love, and RJ Davis all shot over 80% from the line. This week's Tuesday Trivia question: There are six Tar Heels who have made 87% or more of their free throws in a single season (minimum 50 makes). Who are they? The answer:6. Darrell Elston | 1973-74 | 87.1% (81-93)5. Steve Hale | 1984-85 | 87.6% (85-97)4. Marcus Paige | 2013-14 | 87.7% (128-146)3. Jeff Lebo | 1987-88 | 87.8% (86-98)2. Roommate of Carolina Basketball stars Brice Johnson and Marcus Paige comes on as basketball correspondent to address UNCs Final Four run. Took a little longer to get to this podcast, but alas I have made it and we are here to discuss all the games from the past week. The Tar Heels survived Wofford, then suffered their first loss of the season to Northern Iowa. UNC finished up winning the CBE Hall of Fame Classic pulling away from Northwestern and then struggled past Kansas St. Questions to be asked: Did we or anyone get better without Paige? Can we hit outside shots consistently? Are we really a contender? Britt or Berry? What about Brice or Kennedy? Should Hicks be starting? We did find Justin Jackson though! Next is the big match-up with Maryland! And possibly with Marcus Paige available! Rob Dauster and Raphielle Johnson discuss key injuries in the Triangle, Maryland's rotation, Arizona and ... Marshall Plumlee?
Weird things happen with championship trophies when owners get their hands on it, Lauren transforms from Sad Panther Fan into MAD Panther Fan, pre-season CBB polls are worthless and does missing Marcus Paige hurt the Heels?
Can Bo Ryan and the Wisconsin Badgers continue their march to the NCAA Final Four this weekend against Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels? Will Frank Kaminsky, Sam Dekker and Nigel Hayes step up huge against Marcus Paige, J.P. Tokoto and the Tar Heels Thursday night? What are the keys to the game, and will Traevon Jackson be a factor? At the end of the show, we play audio from Jackson talking about playing Thursday and Hayes talking about stenographers.
CJ and Drew are joined by special guest and Hogcast co-host Chuck Livingston to breakdown the Sweet 16. The trio also discuss Tom Izzo's place as greatest tournament coach ever, Governors getting booed, and Arkansas loss to UNC.
I take a look back at the Kentucky game, what went wrong and what could have gone better. Also, a quick look at the UNCG game. Then I preview the upcoming match-up with the Ohio St. Buckeyes on Saturday as a part of the CBS Sports Classic in Chicago. I finish up giving my two cents about Joel James' role on the team and Marcus Paige's recent struggles.
