For more than 40 years, Charles Manson languished in prison for his participation in the Manson family murders of 1969. He was America's icon of evil, the one who brought down the curtain on the 1960s. He was never a quiet inmate, either. From his unbridled outbursts of rage to his tender acts of generosity, he made his presence felt to everyone around him. Over time, he parlayed his notoriety, through clever manipulation and shrewd alliances, to great power behind bars. He inspired awe in other inmates, he cozied up to prison guards who were more than eager to do him favors, and he was responsible for countless staff transfers within and outside of the institution. This book details the dramatic journey of Willie Mendez, a troubled inmate, housed next to the serial killer for more than a year. Willie became institutionalized after repeated violations of the law, including attempted murder and armed robbery. He is serving a 68-year prison sentence. Author Mark Hewitt was introduced to Mendez by Charles Manson, who thought the two had similar ideas and a shared optimism about life. From his initial feelings of contempt toward the aging killer, Willie, nicknamed, "Boxcar," by Manson, traveled to a place of openness and acceptance of the old man's ideas. Over time, he began to defer more and more to Manson without reservation. The relationship eventually soured when some of Manson's claims were proven false. Through great internal strength, and the support of others, Willie distanced himself from the cult leader. Finally, he was able to extricate himself completely from Manson's manipulations. This is a tale of growth and maturity that contains intimate details and shocking jailhouse secrets. Willie shares an insider's view of Charles Manson, his crazy behavior, his whispered confessions, and his sometimes profound wisdom."Charlie" speaks openly about his sexuality, shares some vivid details of the Tate and LaBianca murders, and relates his childhood experience of being forced to wear a dress to school. The iconic killer described for him the many people who influenced him, some when he was a child, others, during his adulthood.Willie describes the episode in which Charlie made and wore a Ku Klux Klan outfit to stir up trouble on the tier. He shares his discovery of Manson's intricate artwork, including the creative techniques used to produce masterpieces behind bars. He details Manson's trip to the shower where the aging killer walked into the water fully clothed. Willie gives us profound insight into Manson's personality and character through stories that illustrate the killer's false bravado, his feigned insane behavior, and a few deep-seated insecurities.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Are you a Realtor stuck in the traditional buy-sell approach and seeking fresh ways to elevate your client service? This episode of 'Realtors' Guide to Creative Real Estate Financing' reveals groundbreaking strategies that are reshaping the Texas real estate landscape. Join us as we explore how these innovative methods can help you cater to a broader client base.Explore the dynamics of Creative Real Estate Financing with our guest, Mark Hewitt, a seasoned North Texas Real Estate Broker. In this episode, we delve into unconventional strategies that help Realtors assist their clients beyond traditional buying and selling. Mark shares insights on wholesaling, owner financing, and the novation process, providing actionable advice on implementing these methods. Learn how these approaches can enhance your service offerings and potentially increase your transaction volume in the competitive Texas market.Key Takeaways:Expanding Services Beyond Buy-Sell TransactionsMark Hewitt discussed the importance of Texas Realtors expanding their service offerings beyond traditional buy and sell transactions. By incorporating creative real estate financing strategies such as owner financing, lease options, and wholesaling, Realtors can provide more value to their clients, helping them navigate various financial barriers and market conditions. This approach not only enhances client satisfaction but also opens up new revenue streams for agents.Leveraging Owner FinancingThis episode highlighted owner financing as a powerful tool in creative real estate financing, particularly useful in today's market conditions. Mark explained how this strategy allows buyers who may not qualify for traditional loans to still purchase homes, while sellers can move properties faster and often at a premium. For Realtors, understanding and facilitating these deals can significantly increase the number of successful closings.Understanding Wholesaling Real EstateMark provided an in-depth look at wholesaling real estate, a lesser-known but highly effective strategy for quick property turnover. He detailed how Realtors can act as intermediaries, securing contracts to purchase properties and then assigning those contracts to end buyers for a fee. This method is especially beneficial in hot markets or for distressed properties and requires minimal investment from the Realtor. The Role of Hard Money in Real Estate TransactionsThe use of hard money loans was another key topic. These loans can be crucial for funding deals that might not qualify for conventional financing, especially for investors looking to renovate and flip properties quickly. Mark's insights included how Realtors can facilitate these loans for their clients, thereby smoothing the path to acquisition and resale, and how they can serve as an additional tool in a Realtor's financial toolkit.Adapting to Market ChangesA significant portion of the discussion was dedicated to the necessity for Realtors to adapt to continuous market changes. With a focus on the Texas market, Mark emphasized the importance of staying informed about local and national market trends, regulatory changes, and financing options. This knowledge enables Realtors to better serve their clients and remain competitive in a fluctuating environment.Time Stamped Summary:00:00 - 03:15 - Introduction by Mike Mills, setting the sports scene in North Texas and transitioning to the main topic with Mark Hewitt about creative real estate financing.03:16 - 06:49 - Mark Hewitt is introduced and discusses the current challenges and opportunities in the real estate market, particularly for realtors considering alternative income streams.06:50 - 10:11 - Detailed discussion on owner financing, its mechanics, benefits for buyers and sellers, and its practical application in current market conditions.10:12 - 13:44 - Exploration...

I mean, Barney Smith was probably dead under the best of circumstances. He went to the finals of American pro wrestling's first ever major championship tournament in 1870 but, as we have been researching for a long time now, there seemed to be no clear evidence he died at the hands of Col. Now, however, two well-known wrestling historians, Jason Campbell and Mark Hewitt, have independently found a source fourteen years after the tournament that alludes to Barney Smith's death and some details on it. In “North Carolina Pottery from Clay to Kiln” Gravy producer Wilson Sayre invites us to consider the vehicles that our food sits on—plates. In this episode, she takes us to central North Carolina, where the story of the hand-thrown pottery and its relationship with food is told with gusto.  If you eat with your eyes, then the “plating” of food is an essential component of a meal and the stories that surround it. In North Carolina, the history of baking clay into utilitarian—and beautiful—plates and bowls is an ancient one. That tradition has been handed down for generations and interpreted by each potter who chose to let the clay get under their fingernails. Today, Seagrove, in the central part of the state, is home to the largest concentration of studio potters in the United States. Each potter has their own journey, but as Mark Hewitt explains, it's all a bit “mad.”  He, like many potters, spends weeks or months turning lumps of clay into beautiful vessels. One by one, pots, pitchers and plates take shape on the pottery wheel, receive decoration, and are set into a kiln to undergo their final transformation from brittle dried clay into gleaming vessels. But that transformation is also a gamble, especially for those who fire with wood. Pots can explode, destroying everything in a kiln, or the firing temperature gets too hot (or not hot enough), causing glazes to turn unappealing colors. And yet they take that gamble over and over again. It's how they tell stories, of place and of their artistic journey. Plates are also our story as eaters, says Glenn Hinson, professor of folklore and anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Whether paper or porcelain, plates shape our relationship with the food they hold, as well as our memories of a meal. In this episode, Sayre speaks with Hewitt and Hinson, as well as Delores J. Farmer, founder of Durham's first Black-owned pottery studio, to learn more about the synergies between dirt, food, and plate. With the spotlight shifted to what's underneath our food, we hope listeners will see this whole other canvas for story. Because in the end, when our food is gone, when we're gone, it's from our plates that people will learn about our foodways. Thanks to guest Mark Hewitt, who opens his pottery twice a year for kiln openings. Thanks also to guest Delores Farmer, who offers classes at her studio to folks in Durham, NC, who are interested in getting a bit of clay under their fingernails. Glenn Hinson and his wife, Amy Bauman, were kind enough to welcome the reporter into their home, share a meal, and provide some of the most beautiful plates for the feast. Although they were not featured in this episode, special thanks to professor Bernie Herman for help in pointing us in the right direction and potter Matt Hallyburton, for providing background context and making beautiful work. Only one killer solves the riddle of the Zodiac. Theodore Kaczynski, dubbed the Unabomber, fills in the gaps of the Zodiac mystery to present the full picture of both criminal careers.Ted Kaczynski:— had experience building bombs which he threatened to use on school children as the Zodiac, and that he subsequently used to kill his victims as the Unabomber— had a psychotic break at age 24, where he convinced himself that he was free of any moral or ethical standard that would prevent him from killing anyone he chose— was a professor at UC Berkeley as the Zodiac murders began, and had easy access to all of the murder sites and victims— was a prolific letter writer whose primary mode of communication was the written word, just like the Zodiac killer— was a genius-level mathematician who was fully capable of creating the Zodiac ciphers, as demonstrated by the codes found in his cabin after his capture in 1996— as the Zodiac, acted out his plan for gaining the attention of the public that he later presented in his Unabomber manifesto— possessed the type of weapons, disguises, and margin notes that would be expected of the Zodiac serial killerThe evidence is there. The answer is Ted Kaczynski. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The solution to the Zodiac serial killer case is as clear as it is controversial. One man, a letter writer, bomb maker, and code creator, was living in the area at the time of the Zodiac murders, had easy access to all the crime scenes, and had had a psychotic break at the time the Zodiac began his heinous murder campaign. A genius-level mathematician, he was clever enough to disguise his handwriting, avoid leaving evidence like fingerprints, and produce diabolically difficult ciphers to taunt the police and the public with his identity that lurked just on the other side of his impossibly difficult codes. That man is Theodore J. Kaczynski.A product of the MK Ultra project at Harvard University, Kaczynski was one of the youngest mathematics professors in UC Berkeley history, a position he despised. Kaczynski committed his first murder as the Zodiac over winter break, 1968, and his second just after resigning his post as professor in July 1969. His criminal signature, letter writing and code making, continued unabated across both of his criminal careers as the Zodiac and Unabomber.EXPOSED takes the reader through all the evidence presented in the first two books, HUNTED and PROFILED, and systematically connects the Zodiac and Unabomber cases through handwriting, codes, locations, literature, cultural references, and other unexpected details. EXPOSED makes it impossible to dismiss Kaczynski as the Zodiac, one of the most evil serial killers of all time. EXPOSED: The Zodiac Revealed (The Zodiac Serial Killer)-Dr. Mark Hewitt

Common Edge Collaborative was created 5 years ago to address architecture and its cultural context, evolution and social meanings. There has never been a time when perspective in what and how our homes mean to us and our culture than after a year where the pandemic has forced all of us to encounter our homes. I have written for Common Edge Collaborative every month for five years. Martin Pedersen was a creator of the organization will join us, as well as two of the site’s contributing writers, Richard Buday and Mark Hewitt, who, like me, are architects who write. All of them, and me, and you, have homes. From the macro level of trying to understand architecture in the context of our culture to the micro reality of how each of us lives, these thought leaders have insights we should all hear. The nimble reality of web-based commentary and shared understanding has a special meaning in this Pandemic year: everything has changed, but we will be inoculated soon, perhaps even “safe” by summer’s end. What of our present condition changes our homes, architecture, our culture? Homes are the canary in the cage of what we value: whatever architecture does, it has millions of test drives in all the homes we live in. Let’s hear what a group of creators, commentators and dwellers in homes think has changed, will changed and what will change beyond this year on Home Page Radio.

Our guest today is more proof of an emerging trend in production agriculture.  Young farmers are recognizing both the need for off-farm income and that entrepreneurship is the best way for them to produce this.   Mark Hewitt and his wife have their own small farm and are leasing more ground to build their lives in agriculture. However, they are not to the point that they are self-sufficient yet.  So, Mark needs to bring in money from off of the farm.  He has chosen entrepreneurship to do this because it allows him flexibility in his schedule to manage his own farm as effectively as possible.  Also, it offers an opportunity for greater earning potential than a job, which could speed up his pathway to full-time farming.  Last, but certainly not least, it allows Mark to arrange his schedule to maximize time with his family. If you want to be a full-time farmer in production agriculture, this is a great episode for you to listen to.  It also is more proof of this emerging trend among young, production agriculture farmers. ADVICE FROM MARK:START SMALL: Mark suggests that you don't go too big, too fast  He learned this from his own experience, and if he had to do it over again he would have taken smaller steps. RESERVES: Mark definitely suggests prioritizing having some capital reserves.  You never know when an issue will come up in which you need money to run your business or an opportunity will arise that you can only take advantage of if you have the money. It is the year 2030. After a number of false starts the Government finally introduced its Whiplash reforms in April 2022 following delays due to the extended impact of Brexit and Covid 19. It was considered in the main a success as the extra time allowed all sides to reach agreements on areas that had been seen as stumbling blocks like the inclusion of ADR. This was in part helped by the co-operation that begun during the pandemic including the personal injury protocol spearheaded by Thompsons Solicitors and the Association of British Insurers. The extra time also meant the portal was fitter for purpose than some sceptics expected.‘Lay legal advisers' - in the form of so-called 'McKenzie Friends' - did not have as large as unintended consequence as some feared, but did prove a distraction until the Ministry of Justice followed Scotland's lead by introducing a ban on remuneration for them.Another hangover from Covid-19 was that it sped up the use of remote trials/dispute resolution for personal injury claims, including the use of mediated joint settlement meetings before going to court. Although there remains concerns among some that they do not get the same access to justice remotely as in person, this has waned over the last decade.Automation has also become prevalent in the settling of low value personal injury claims with over half now settled this way; including an increasing number whereby a claimant receives funds within the hour after a consultation with a doctor in person or remotely. As mentioned in the first hypothesis and article [Motor] the increase in vehicle automation has seen a decrease in the number of personal injury claims related to motor. But CMCs – although reduced in number – have seen a new rich vain in claims farming involving people working from home injuring themselves and bringing claims against their employers. There has also been a rise in claims from accidents involving Mobility-As-A-Service vehicles such as e-Scooters. With the uptick in pedal bike usage post Covid-19 third party insurance is now compulsory for cyclists too. When a vehicle does have an accident, ENOL means policyholders don't have to notify their insurer as the vehicles does it for them. In many cases claims are settled through a hub whereby reciprocal agreements between insurers mean swifter payments for the insured. These includes using apps to analyse the damage and ascertain liability almost immediately at the site of some accidents after a swift information exchange between the relevant carriers. The market is due another review of the discount rate in early 2030 with the last review in 2025. After some exploration the Government rejected the possibility of a dual-rate five years ago, which would mean having a lower rate in the short term and a higher rate in the long term to safeguard vulnerable claimants, although the Lord Chancellor said this remained open to further discussion at the next review. The discount rate is presently at 0%.Based on this hypothesis, Post content director Jonathan Swift sat down with Mark Hewitt, director, and Mark Strang, senior business developer, Verisk to discuss the possible path between now and the 2030 outlined in the associated article. This includes the importance of the whiplash reforms, the growth in remote hearings, the increase in automation, the benefits of insurers being immediately notified electronically that a vehicle has been involved in an accident, and the evolving role of CMCs. One question remains unanswered: Who is the Zodiac? There have been many hypotheses about the killer’s identity, some sober and evidence-based, some wildly speculative, all touching upon any one or more of the 2,500 suspects in the Zodiac serial killer case. But until now, the truth has not been known. In HUNTED, Dr. Mark Hewitt presented the facts of the case: the attacks, the letters, the phone calls, and the police response. In PROFILED, he demonstrated the psychology of serial killers and gave an evidence-based criminal profile of the Zodiac himself. Yet even these present an incomplete picture of the case. In EXPOSED, Dr. Hewitt fills in the gaps in the timeline, explains how and why the Zodiac originated and where he disappeared to, and reveals the identity of one of the most enigmatic and feared serial killers in American history. On September 27, 2018, EXPOSED: The Zodiac Revealed, the final instalment of the Zodiac Serial Killer series, brings to light the truth about the Zodiac. In it, Hewitt presents definitive evidence of the killer’s identity, and names him directly. This incontrovertible work of investigation will confirm the suspicions of many Zodiac investigators and change the public’s understanding of the case forever. Using his backyard botanical sanctuary for inspiration, ceramic artist Joseph Sand purposefully crafts sculptural forms and functional pottery utilizing elements from the natural world including wood, stone, and seashells. He is focused on keeping the final function in mind, such as the fluted vase made to showcase a single stem of iris.  Growing up in rural Minnesota, attending college on the shores of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, and eventually moving to rural North Carolina, it’s no surprise that Joseph finds inspiration in his surroundings.  Joseph moved to North Carolina in 2006 for a full-time apprenticeship with master potter Mark Hewitt.  It is there he learned that wood-fired pottery allowed for a deeper connection between him and the final piece, using his hands to form, guide, and finish each creation.  Joseph wood fires his 40-foot-long, 8-foot-wide kiln only three times per year.  His work has been featured in Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated and in several permanent collections, including at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC and the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, NM.  Most recently, his 36-piece large-scale work “Resurgence” was selected for permanent installation at the Benton Convention Center in Winston Salem, NC. Joseph’s creations can be purchased locally at his rural home and gallery space in Randleman, North Carolina, as well as at many galleries nationwide.

The Search Continues... Following up on the meticulously detailed research of HUNTED: The Zodiac Murders (Book 1), PROFILED: The Zodiac Examined (Book 2) goes beyond the case files to develop a comprehensive psychological profile that examines the personality, psychology, physical characteristics, and motives of the Zodiac. Based in the same detailed research of HUNTED, PROFILED sticks to the facts and articulates at every step how the conclusions of the profile were reached. The Zodiac serial killer murdered, wrote letters, created ciphers, and taunted the police and the people of the San Francisco Bay Area from 1966 to 1974 but, over five decades, has not been identified. At the time he was active, the term serial killer had not yet been coined, and psychological profiles were practically unknown. Now, using 21st century crime analytics and a sophisticated understanding of serial killers, it is possible to create a psychological profile that may help identify the kind of man who could commit these terrible crimes and get away with it for decades, despite an overabundance of evidence that should have pointed directly to him. Join the search for the killer as the evidence is compiled and analyzed in PROFILED: The Zodiac Examined-Mark Hewitt

The Zodiac occupies a special place among serial killers. Claiming the lives of at least 5 young victims and taunting the police in telephone calls and cryptic letters, he terrorized Northern California from 1966 to 1974 and beyond. Despite his appalling acts of violence, he was never arrested—he has never even been identified.Thousands of men have been accused; nearly 2,500 have been investigated. The police lack only the name of the perpetrator. Never has there been more passionate interest in the Zodiac serial killer. Never has there been more FOIA-released information on his crime spree and the subsequent law enforcement investigation. Yet, never before has a carefully-researched scholarly treatment of this otherwise eminently solvable riddle been attempted. That is, until now.In this painstakingly-researched and meticulously-detailed account by true crime author Mark G. Hewitt, the reader is offered unprecedented access to the case facts. HUNTEDreveals recent interviews, some of which have never before been made public, as well as all available FBI and local police reports and contemporary press accounts of the day to create a comprehensive narration of the facts, including various sides of the many disputed issues within the case.In three volumes, Mark Hewitt will recount the murders, examine the evidence, and narrow down the possibilities of the suspects who could have possibly been the Zodiac serial killer. HUNTED: The Zodiac Murders-book 1-Mark Hewitt

Alex Matisse grew up in a converted white clapboard church in the center of a small New England town in a family of artists. For three years, Alex apprenticed in the workshops of North Carolina potters Matt Jones and Mark Hewitt. Their work combines traditions, from the Anglo-Oriental school of Leach, Hamada, and Cardew to the folk pottery of the south-eastern United States and many places between. In their workshops Alex learned to love simple pots; adorned or bare, quiet and strong, they make their place comfortably in the home and speak to the thousands of years of pots before them, and all that is to come. Alex's work is made in a fusion of pre-industrial country traditions in both process and material. It is fired in a large wood burning kiln and made of as many local materials as the chemistry will allow. Ales believes in the beautiful object; that there are inescapable aesthetic truths, physical attributes, that remove time and place from the defining characteristics of the made object. These objects can be viewed today or many years from now and be understood as beautiful. Though their quotidian value may become antiquated, their aesthetics will save them. Alex believes in making pots that carry this truth while, as Henry Glassie told Alex in passing one day, holding one hand to the past with the other outstretched to the future.

Andrew Stephenson was born in Birmingham, England in 1972 and moved to the states with his family in 1979.  He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from East Carolina University in 1996. Shortly after graduation he moved to Asheville, NC to take a position as a resident potter at the Odyssey Center for the ceramic Arts. Andrew has always loved the folk pottery of England and especially the wood fired salt-glazed pottery of North Carolina, so when he was offered a two year apprenticeship with Matt Jones, a former apprentice of Todd Piker and Mark Hewitt, he jumped at the chance. During the apprenticeship he learned the forms and turning techniques that have been passed down from potter to potter since the days of Bernard Leach and Michael Cardew. Andrew also helped Matt fire his 300 cubic foot wood fired kiln and his smaller 100 cubic foot kiln fueling his love for wood firing.  When Andrew was finished with his apprenticeship he bought a house in rural Rutherford county, received a grant, and built his own 300 cubic foot wood kiln and holds several kiln openings a year. Andrew continues the long tradition of wood firing in North Carolina and sells his work in galleries throughout the southeast.
