What is it like to meet murderers on death row? What is it like to meet mass shooters (those who survived)? Their families and friends? What is it like to meet the families and friends of their victims? In this episode, Dr. Jillian Peterson takes us through the lives of mass shooters and tells us about some of the variables in their psychological journey from being a wee baby to becoming a mass murderer. She also shares warning signs - what mass shooters leak before they begin their killing rampage. And, of course, we talk about guns and mass shootings. Are the two connected? Well, let me say this - England and New Zealand banned many types of guns and mass shootings decreased dramatically! One of the factors that I found fascinating about mass shooters is their desire for fame or perhaps infamy. So that I won't spoil too much here, listen to Dr. Peterson talk about this factor and also be sure to visit the No Notoriety website, which was founded by the parents of a mass shooting victim. Dr. Peterson is a professor of criminology and criminal justice at Hamline University, where she is the Executive Director of the Violence Prevention Project Research Center. She is the co-author of Violence Project – How to Stop the Mass Shooting Epidemic, a book that we discuss in this episode. To learn more about Dr. Peterson, you can visit her academic and personal home pages. America's Gun Violence - Resurrecting & Reinterpreting the 2nd Amendment: in this episode, Dr. Robert Spitzer tells the history of gun regulation in America, and how the NRA transformed itself from helping Congress regulate guns to opposing all gun regulations. The Psychology of Mass Shooters in the United States: A Deep Dive

The Optimistic American

In this episode of The Optimistic American, Paul Johnson sits down with Dr. Emily Bashah to discuss gun control, mass shootings in the United States, and how we can use the data to prevent mass shootings from happening in the future. Paul and Emily start the conversation by describing how mass shootings, directly and indirectly, impact local communities. According to Emily, we need to understand how mass shooters think and operate - only then can we prevent more shootings from happening in the future. Emily breaks down what the data says about mass shooters. A study done in the 2021 book, The Violence Project: How to Stop A Mass Shooting Epidemic, compiled detailed data including the life history of 180 shooters. The data shows that nearly all mass shooters have a history of trauma and most mass shooters are suicidal and the hatred they have for themselves turns outward. Almost all mass shooters have one thing in common: they all want to die and don't care who they take with them. To solve the problem of mass shootings we have to be willing to look for answers that can work politically, be constitutional, and be effective. Some of the solutions being bantered about are ineffective if the data is correct. The solution will need both gun restrictions and mental health efforts. Paul and Emily agree that dedicating funds to community mental health efforts can help identify and potentially reduce the number of mass shooters. Especially on school campuses where the data helps us identify those people who are most at risk. Paul talks about gun laws that would effectively reduce the number of mass shootings in the US and those that will have little effect. Paul points out that while he isn't defending AR-15 sales, most of the shootings happen with hand guns, and if you banned AR-15's, there isn't evidence it would have stopped any of the mass shootings. It just would have happened with a different gun. Paul points out the type of gun laws that data shows works is the gun laws that keep guns out of the hands of people who commit the crimes, notably kids, people with a history of violence and those who are suicidal. This includes safe storage laws, red flag laws, and the ability to put restraining orders issued by a judge on people who have shown signs of being violent. Emily points out that at the scene of most mass shootings, there are usually many people with guns in the parking lot that didn't stop the shootings. We have to work on creating barriers before the incident. Paul and Emily agree that reducing the number of mass shootings is only possible if both gun laws are adopted that target the potentially dangerous individual and a focus on mental health. Emily points out the type of clues and hints mass shooters exhibit before attacking innocent civilians. Those clues can help us identify at risk individuals and save lives. Who is to blame for the increase in number of mass shooters? Emily believes it's everybody - from the government to the parents and everybody in contact with the mass shooters has to take responsibility to fix this massive problem.     Mentioned in This Episode: optamerican.com Addictive Ideologies: Finding Meaning and Agency When Politics Fail You by Dr Emily Bashah and Hon Paul Johnson The Violence Project: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic by Jillian Peterson

Just above the U.S. is Azerbaijan, and just below is Brazil.  “Civil unrest continues to be the primary driver of the deterioration,” the GPI report says about the U.S., noting rises in the political terror and political instability categories. “However, there were also significant improvements in indicators across all three domains, with largest being in the UN peacekeeping funding indicator.”    Born and raised in England, Simon C. Frustrated by reactionary policy conversations that never seemed to convert into meaningful action, special investigator and psychologist Jill Peterson and sociologist James Densley built The Violence Project, the first comprehensive database of mass shooters. Their goal was to establish the root causes of mass shootings and figure out how to stop them by examining hundreds of data points in the life histories of more than 170 mass shooters--from their childhood and adolescence to their mental health and motives. They've also interviewed the living perpetrators of mass shootings and people who knew them, shooting survivors, victims' families, first responders, and leading experts to gain a comprehensive firsthand understanding of the real stories behind them, rather than the sensationalized media narratives that too often prevail. For the first time, instead of offering thoughts and prayers for the victims of these crimes, Peterson and Densley share their data-driven solutions for exactly what we must do, at the individual level, in our communities, and as a country, to put an end to these tragedies that have defined our modern era. Police say Monday's holiday mass shooting had been planned for weeks. Seven people died and dozens injured as Robert Crimo III fired as many as 70 rounds into the crowd from a Highland Park rooftop. The shooter accessed the roof via a fire escape ladder, then fled the scene by wearing women's clothing.  An AR-15 type weapon was used n the assault, but police say Crimo bought the rifle used in the deadly shooting legally — along with four other firearms.    Joining Nancy Grace today: Lisa Fine-Cavalli, Vegas Mass Shooting Survivor (Oct 1, 2017), Co-Founder: Route91Strong, Twitter: @LisaFineLove, Facebook.com/Route91Strong Dale Carson - High Profile Attorney (Jacksonville), Former FBI Agent, Former Police Officer, Author: "Arrest-Proof Yourself, DaleCarsonLaw.com Dr. Jillian Peterson - Forensic Psychologist, Professor of Criminal Justice at Hamline University (St. Paul, MN), Expert on Mass Shootings and Violence Prevention, Author: "The Violence Project: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic", theviolenceproject.org, Twitter: @JillKPeterson, Dr. Michelle DuPre - Former Forensic Pathologist, Medical Examiner and Detective: Lexington County Sheriff's Department, Author: "Homicide Investigation Field Guide" & "Investigating Child Abuse Field Guide", Forensic Consultant, DMichelleDupreMD.com  David Katz - Former Senior Special Agent with the DEA, Founder and CEO: Global Security Group, Inc., Active Shooter Response Expert, Lynn Sweet - Washington Bureau Chief, Chicago Sun-Times, Witness at Fourth of July Parade  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

No other high-income country has suffered such a high death toll from gun violence. Every day, more than 110 Americans die at the end of a gun, including suicides and homicides, an average of 40,620 per year. Since 2009, there has been an annual average of 19 mass shootings, when defined as shootings in which at least four people are killed. The US gun homicide rate is as much as 26 times that of other high-income countries; its gun suicide rate is nearly 12 times higher.

Ten people were killed in a mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York Saturday. The victims were Black and investigators say the shooter was motivated by racial hatred. The Buffalo shooting was one of four nationwide this past weekend. For many years, criminologists Jillian Peterson, Ph.D., and James Densley, Ph.D., have studied mass shootings and the people who carry them out. Their research has shown and they point out in their 2021 book THE VIOLENCE PROJECT: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic is that those who carried out mass shootings share four common characteristics, including grievances and exposure to violence. Dr. Peterson and Dr. Densley appear on Smart Talk Tuesday to offer insights into their research and a hopeful look at stopping the violence before it happens. A prosecutor is asking a judge to intervene after the parents of a suspected school shooter reportedly blew kisses at each other during a remote hearing. James and Jennifer Crumbley are each facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection to the November 2020 school shooting in which their son, Ethan, is accused of killed four classmates. The mother of the 15-year-old Michigan boy texted a friend about her son's demeanor hours before the deadly shooting, court testimony revealed. Jennifer Crumbley's friend, Kira Pennock, 25, testified during a preliminary hearing about the texts Jennifer Crumbley sent her regarding a meeting she had with the school counselor hours before the shooting, according to The Detroit News. In the alleged texts, Jennifer Crumbley said she “s**t day” after the conference and included a photo of a disturbing drawing her 15-year-old son drew on a math assignment. Hours after the shooting, Jennifer Crumbley texted Pennock, “My son ruined so many lives today.” Fox News reported that during that fateful meeting, Ethan Crumbley convinced school officials that his concerning drawings were from a video game. The teen's parents also refused to take him home, according to prosecutors. Jennifer Crumbley allegedly also texted Pennock that her son was having a “hard time” and “can't be left alone.” Ethan Crumbley is charged with terrorism, first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, and gun violations. He remains jailed without bond. Mass shootings account for only  0.2% of firearm deaths in the US a year -- but their impact is large, deeply traumatizing survivors, their communities, and the country as a whole. How do we, as a nation, try to prevent these mass shootings? And what commonalities exist between not just these shootings, but the shooters themselves? To find out, host JJ is joined by Dr. Jillian Peterson of Hamline University and Dr. James Densley of Metropolitan State University,  both authors of forthcoming book "the Violence Project: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic" and co-founders and co-presidents of a nonpartisan, nonprofit research center of the same name (the Violence Project).
