More school districts are without school resource officers after the police departments in Apple Valley, Maple Grove and White Bear Lake have pulled them. A change in state law – which deals with the types of physical restraints that can be used on students – has led about 40 law agencies to suspend their school resource officer programs. The sparring over the law brings to mind questions about the role and effectiveness of police officers in schools. For more, MPR News host Cathy Wurzer spoke with James Densley. He is a professor and department chair of criminal justice at Metro State University.

According to a January survey in USA TODAY which measured the safest places to live in the world, the United States ranks at 129th with a score of 2.44, marking the country's score "low." Just above the U.S. is Azerbaijan, and just below is Brazil. “Civil unrest continues to be the primary driver of the deterioration,” the GPI report says about the U.S., noting rises in the political terror and political instability categories. “However, there were also significant improvements in indicators across all three domains, with largest being in the UN peacekeeping funding indicator.” Born and raised in England, Simon C. Osamoh is the founder and CEO of Kingswood Security Consulting, a Minneapolis based security risk management firm. Simon first moved to the United States to Head Counter Terrorism at Mall of America, Minnesota. The largest shopping and entertainment complex in North America where he oversaw counterterrorism and the internationally recognized behavior threat assessment team. He quickly established himself as one of the country's leading experts on security at soft targets where his work gained national media attention. He spent 14 years as a Detective in England working serious and organized crime. One of his notable cases includes working with the British Security Services during the investigation of the “liquid bomb terrorism plot” against the U.S.A in 2006, which changed aviation security regulations worldwide limiting the amount of liquids that can be taken onto planes. Simon is a former Director of Risk and Compliance having worked for three of America's largest financial institutions that include Wells Fargo, US Bank, and Equiniti Trust Company. Where he oversaw programs that included risk management, business continuity, crisis management, anti-bribery and corruption, regulatory compliance, testing programs and third party risk. He is the author of three books, 10 Powerful Strategies for Verbal De-Escalation, Securing Church Operations and Church Safety Responding to Suspicious Behavior. Simon's work on conversational interviewing is featured in the award- winning book How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic by Dr. James Densley and Dr. Jillian Peterson of the Violence Project. Simon is a writer for the Worship Facility online publication sent to 30,000 organizations each month and serves as a member of the editorial advisory board. He joined me this week to tell me more. The beginning of the week featured another horrible mass shooting in America. This time at a bank in Louisville, Kentucky. That's why I wanted to bring on one of the leading experts currently studying mass shootings. Metro State University Professor James Densley is one of the co-founders of The Violence Project, which has the most detailed and comprehensive database of mass shootings dating back to 1966. He is also the co-author of the book by the same name that outlines potential real-world solutions to the phenomenon. Professor Densley explained why he believes the count they use, which only includes public attacks where four or more people are killed for reasons unrelated to other criminal conduct, gives the most accurate understanding of mass shootings. He said it's important to properly define terms when you're attempting to seriously study a problem and identify trends so you can craft solutions. He laid out some of the common patterns seen in the lives of mass shooters before they carry out their attacks. For instance, he said most shooters have a long history of abuse and trauma before they decide to do the unthinkable. And the shootings almost always follow an inciting incident that sends the shooter into a crisis state. Densley argued that a potential attacker could be "off-ramped" at any point along that path, whether it's after they first experience abuse or after they begin experiencing an inciting crisis. What's necessary is for those who recognize the warning signs to step in and do something to help. And that resources to help are made available and known to those looking to carry out that kind of intervention. But those aren't the only interventions Densley believes are necessary. He said firearms restrictions of some kind should be part of the equation as well, especially for those showing warning signs they may be a threat to themselves or others. We go back and forth on why gun-rights advocates and gun owners are not as open to those ideas as Densley would like them to be. Ultimately, Densley said he believes mass shootings are not an inevitability and can be prevented through action on the individual and societal level--even if not everyone agrees on every aspect of the solutions he proposes. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I discuss a new win in court for marijuana users who want to own guns. Special Guest: James Densley.
PipemanRadio Interviews The Bloody HellOut Now! Canadian Punks THE BLOODY HELL Punch Out New Album "Nobody Cares"Formed in 2017, The Bloody Hell has gotten dirtier and more polished at the same time, with the band infecting fans with their pop-cultural hooks and concepts, while the guitars keep getting louder and the vocals becoming uglier. The Bloody Hell is pretty much what would happen if George Thorogood sang for the Misfits, but all the songs were written by Tom Petty.Super catchy horror rock songs about drinking and heartache are played at punk rock speed with a lineup that features vocalist/guitarist Ian Kean (guitar, vocals), guitarist and pianist James Densley also known from Bubbles and The Shit Rockers, the band fronted by the character Bubbles from the hit TV show The Trailer Park Boys, drummer Kyle Cantfell (Elektric Mistress), and bassist Joe Woods (Root Cellar).Fast forward now to 2022, and these Canadian punk rockers from Halifax, Nova Scotia return in 2022 to finally release their long-awaited follow-up to their 2018 debut self-titled album. Entitled "Nobody Cares", the sophomore full-length is out now as of November 10th. Over the last two years during the Covid pandemic, the band shared two singles and music videos, "Nobody Cares About America Anymore" and "When You're Gone" off the record to a great reception from fans."The album took about 3 years to complete due to Covid restrictions, lockdown, and all the madness that was the pandemic. With this album, we feel our sound has evolved nicely from the previous record released in 2018. We have worked hard to shape our songwriting and storytelling abilities and that is thoroughly displayed over the nine tracks on this album. We are hoping that fans who loved our first album will be super excited to hear this one to see how our songwriting has progressed. And we hope that people hearing us for the first time will find something in our sound to relate to or sing along with." adds vocalist/guitarist Ian Kean."Nobody Cares" features The Bloody Hell's signature sound of raspy aggressive, catchy horror, and politically charged antics over nine tracks that clock in at just over 28 minutes. From tracks like "Hide Away" with its fast punky driving riff and slick earworm guitar lead to "Barbra" a cover of an old Canadian punk song by Vancouver legends Modernettes to even having saxophone on "G" along with added piano on "As Above" and "So Below", punk fans will find it to be an energetic and passionate sonic experience that conveys stories from lived experiences that many can relate to."It's a true story and we mean every word, hook, and note on it. We give an emotional rollercoaster for your eyes and mind with twists and turns, ups and downs. Just as life is. All the lyrics come from personal experiences whether it be a relationship failure or success, a wild story of substance abuse, or just an observation about world events. I write what I know and try to be truthful in my lyrics." says Kean. With a big emphasis on storytelling, so are the two music videos they released to support the album, which can be viewed below. When You're Gone - https://youtu.be/FjE2iDebguYNobody Cares About America Anymore - https://youtu.be/4QVIfLQY2YsSuitable for a variety of fans, The Bloody Hell cites influences ranging from Misfits, Nirvana, and Motorhead, anyone who enjoys a fun and dirty romp with a bull horn of grungy vocals.Their new album "Nobody Cares" is available on all digital platforms and cassette as of November 10th, 2022 at https://linktr.ee/thebloodyhellhfx.Track Listing:1. Using data from the writers' groundbreaking research on mass shooters, including first-person accounts from the perpetrators themselves, The Violence Project: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic (Harry N. Abrams, 2021) charts new pathways to prevention and innovative ways to stop the social contagion of violence. Frustrated by reactionary policy conversations that never seemed to convert into meaningful action, special investigator and psychologist Jill Peterson and sociologist James Densley built The Violence Project, the first comprehensive database of mass shooters. Their goal was to establish the root causes of mass shootings and figure out how to stop them by examining hundreds of data points in the life histories of more than 170 mass shooters--from their childhood and adolescence to their mental health and motives. They've also interviewed the living perpetrators of mass shootings and people who knew them, shooting survivors, victims' families, first responders, and leading experts to gain a comprehensive firsthand understanding of the real stories behind them, rather than the sensationalized media narratives that too often prevail. For the first time, instead of offering thoughts and prayers for the victims of these crimes, Peterson and Densley share their data-driven solutions for exactly what we must do, at the individual level, in our communities, and as a country, to put an end to these tragedies that have defined our modern era. Last week, 19 children and two teachers died during a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. But since then, at least another 17 mass shootings have already happened in the United States. In the aftermath of these incidents, the narrative always goes around gun control, mental health, and lots of thoughts and prayers from politicians, but little to no action. So, why is it so hard for the US government to put an end to this? In this episode: Dr. James Densley social scientist, professor of criminal justice, and co-founder of The Violence Project, a nonprofit organization that studies mass shootings (@theviolencepro) Credits: This episode was produced by Ney Alvarez, with Negin Owliaei, Ruby Zaman, Amy Walters, Alexandra Locke, and Halla Mohieddeen in for Malika Bilal. In America, unthinkable violence has become routine. In the wake of the Buffalo and Uvalde mass shootings, David Remnick speaks with the researchers Jillian Peterson and James Densley, whose book “The Violence Project” is the most in-depth study of mass shooters. Pro-gun politicians may continue to block any measures to reduce violence, but we can understand better a different side of the equation: what motivates these crimes. David Remnick speaks with two criminal-justice researchers who have studied mass killers, James Densley, of Metropolitan State University, and Jillian Peterson, of Hamline University. They point out that mass shootings have risen alongside deaths of despair, including overdoses and suicide. “The perpetrator goes in with no escape plan,” Peterson points out. “What we can learn from suicide prevention can teach us how to prevent some of these mass shootings. We haven't connected these two things.” We also hear from a 70-year-old resident of Uvalde, Texas, about the aftermath of the killings in a tight-knit community.

Ten people were killed in a mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York Saturday. The victims were Black and investigators say the shooter was motivated by racial hatred. The Buffalo shooting was one of four nationwide this past weekend. For many years, criminologists Jillian Peterson, Ph.D., and James Densley, Ph.D., have studied mass shootings and the people who carry them out. Their research has shown and they point out in their 2021 book THE VIOLENCE PROJECT: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic is that those who carried out mass shootings share four common characteristics, including grievances and exposure to violence. Dr. Peterson and Dr. Densley appear on Smart Talk Tuesday to offer insights into their research and a hopeful look at stopping the violence before it happens. A 2019 poll reported that one-third of adults say they feel they “cannot go anywhere without worrying about being a victim of mass shooting” and “more than half of American teenagers worry about a shooting at their school.” A mass shooting is generally defined as the murder of at least four people at one time. Why do mass shootings take place? Are there any commonalities between the perpetrators? Could these shootings have been stopped before they started? Link to Blog. Link to Resource Library.
For many years, criminologists Jillian Peterson, Ph.D., and James Densley, Ph.D., have studied mass shootings and the people who carry them out. One of the most jarring points made in their new book THE VIOLENCE PROJECT: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic is that most of those who commit mass shootings aren't monsters, but … Continue reading "Is it possible to stop a mass shooting epidemic?"

Mass shootings account for only 0.2% of firearm deaths in the US a year -- but their impact is large, deeply traumatizing survivors, their communities, and the country as a whole. How do we, as a nation, try to prevent these mass shootings? And what commonalities exist between not just these shootings, but the shooters themselves? To find out, host JJ is joined by Dr. Jillian Peterson of Hamline University and Dr. James Densley of Metropolitan State University, both authors of forthcoming book "the Violence Project: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic" and co-founders and co-presidents of a nonpartisan, nonprofit research center of the same name (the Violence Project). Together they all discuss the Violence Projects' mass shooter database, which collates data about mass shooters life histories, psychological profiles, and first person accounts (while also practicing no notoriety) -- and how this data suggests better interventions against violence. Mass shootings are very rare, but they receive a lot of media attention and have enormous social costs. Guest host Dr. Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Prevention and Policy, talks with Dr. Jillian Peterson from Hamline University and Dr. James Densley from Metropolitan State University about The Violence Project, research that collects data about the life history of mass shooters and their psychological profiles. They discuss what they’ve learned, how this research can inform interventions, and why evidence suggests that many of the ways we’re currently trying to prevent violence are all wrong.

There have been 45 mass shootings in the United States since March 15th. 45. That’s an incident involving 4 or more victims, excluding the shooter. That is surreal. The state of our national discourse is, to put it mildly, discouraging and unhelpful, and the reaction to the recent shootings only amplified how bad it is. Once again, everyone took their place along partisan battle lines to pound the same old drums, but it's past time we admit that there's something deeper going on in America than too many guns, or too few guns, or violent video games, or the president's rhetoric, or even the evil of white supremacy. That's not to say there are no good policy proposals out there to address these issues, which need to be addressed. As a Second Amendment guy, I could buy into something like what David French proposed last year in National Review: a system for family and employers to report warning signs and separate unstable individuals from their guns. But, as French admits, the best that policy would do is keep troubled young men from acting on their violent impulses. It doesn't address the young men themselves, or the source of those impulses. And that's exactly the issue we can no longer ignore. Yesterday, I highlighted the crisis of virtue across our culture, and how that will lead to the loss of freedom. It's an historical inevitability. Today, I want to zero in on the problem of men in our culture, especially young men. They aren't okay. Writing at the LA Times, professor of criminology Jillian Peterson and sociologist James Densley offer a revealing look at America's mass-shooters. They've studied every shooter since 1966, and the vast majority have four things in common: “early childhood trauma and exposure to violence at a young age”; seeking “validation” in extreme communities, often online; openly admiring the work of prior shooters; and nearly all are longtime loners with an identifiable “crisis point” like getting fired or expelled from school. Oh, and by the way, they are men. In fact, the young men who appear on CNN's list of the “27 Deadliest Mass Shootings in U.S. History” have something else in common: almost all of them grew up without fathers. In other words, with few exceptions, the signs that a young man is headed down a dark road overlap noticeably with signs we see across our culture that young men in general are not doing well. Lacking strong role models and healthy social groups, increasingly left behind academically and vocationally, and floundering for a purpose in life beyond video games, countless males have sought solace in the only communities they can find—usually online—where the foulest kinds of hate, conspiracy theories, and nihilism await them. Of course, these factors don't always lead one to become a mass-shooter. For every young man catechized into some toxic radicalism (like Dylan Roof or the El Paso Shooter) or into nihilistic unbelief (like Dylan Klebold and the Aurora theatre shooter), and then chooses to act on it with a gun, millions of others do not. Still, that doesn't mean they're doing well either. Quite the opposite: our society largely fails to cultivate young men, to teach them about their fallen natures, and to morally form them to choose love over hate and courage over violence. Thus, the epidemics of addiction, aimlessness, depression, irresponsibility, perversion, selfishness, victimhood, and low expectations continue. Until we face the fact that the root of our problem lies here, the fruit will continue to be bitter. Unless we rebuild the institutions of civil society that cultivate young men, there is no way forward. We certainly won't fix this problem through government policies or mindless distractions. Only the church, with its kingdom vision and distributed work force, has the necessary resources to target young men with truth, forgiveness, accountability, and hope. And on today's BreakPoint podcast, Shane Morris and I dive even more deeply into the issues confronting so many of our young men–and how the church can and must respond.
