He served in the Peace Corps in Mozambique before moving to Boulder a little over 20 years ago. One of the reasons he moved there was because of the African drum and dance scene that was so prevalent there.Once he moved there, he started studying under African drummers Abdoul Doumbia and Fara Tolno, and he eventually decided to become a professional musician in his early 30s. He graduated from Metro State in 2013 with a second bachelor's, studying jazz there under Ron Miles and Paul Romaine, and he got the idea of mixing African music with American jazz concepts. In 2017, he started writing music more seriously after getting a pro deal on the music software Finale. Most athletes walk away from sports because they “get too old.” The opposite can happen in the sport of golf and Matt Schalk is a prime example.   Growing up in Boulder, Matt was a baseball guy. Until his dad won a game of gin at the local country club and the losing golf pro didn't have the money to pay up. So, Matt's dad bartered and got the pro to give golf lessons to his sons. One lesson and Matt was hooked.   He kept up the game until just before high school. The Schalk family finances were struggling at the time and the pricey sport of golf went on the shelf for a decade. After a couple of years at Metro State, Matt picked up his clubs again and decided he wanted to go pro. He made some money, but usually only enough to pay for the next entry fee.   Once Matt and his wife started a family, it was time for a real job. Of course he started at a golf course, picking up range balls by hand. He eventually worked his way to what he's doing now as the GM and Director of Golf at Colorado National Golf Club.  In the meantime, he also turned 50, which meant he could start competing in senior events and trying to make the cuts for bigger tournaments. Not only did he make some cuts, he won some championships. Championships that could turn into much bigger victories than he ever had in his younger years. He truly is getting better with age.

It's Friday, and we're breaking down the biggest stories of the week. First, more and more students and community members are gathering on the Tivoli Quad at Auraria to protest Israel's war on Hamas, and negotiations with the administrators are at a standstill. So we've got the editor in chief of Metro State's student-run newspaper, Sara Martin, joining host Bree Davies and our politics and green chile correspondent Justine Sandoval to talk about rising tensions on campus ahead of graduation next week. Plus, decorum was supposed to be a priority at the legislature, but state lawmakers keep slugging it out on social media. And finally, DPD's conspicuous arrest of a hot dog vendor and more of our wins and fails of the week. We talked about Jesse Paul of the Colorado Sun's post on X about legislators' social media squabbles as well as Marianne Goodland's story on this issue from Colorado Politics. Sara mentioned her staff's recent Society of Professional Journalists awards; follow Sara's work on Twitter and in The Metropolitan. Justine mentioned the JeffCo GOP's controversial fundraiser guest and the Cobalt Abortion fund. Bree talked about the old Denver matchbooks story from Denverite and Westword's piece on hot dog vendor Alejandro Ramirez's arrest. What do you think? The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Mike is a renowned basketball coach who is has led teams in US College, the NBA and in Australia. He started as a College Assistant in 1980 before becoming the Head Coach of Cal Lutheran in 1989. In 1994 he moved to Australia and led the Adelaide 36ers in the |National League before returning to the USA in 1997 to lead Metro State. That team went on to win National Championships in 2000 and 2002. In 2006 he went to the NBA for the first time as an Assistant at Denver, before returning to University of Arizona as Head Coach. In 2011 he was chosen by Michal Jordan to lead the Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA. Then in 2020, Mike returned to the NBA as an Assistant Coach with Milwaukee Bucks and was with them then they defeated the Phoenix Suns to win their first NBA Championship in 2021. In this terrific interview some of the key highlights were: • The importance of a leader balancing inclusivity with also moving to a position of clarity where they can see broadly and make decisions for the benefit of the group. • His belief that the word perfection is dangerous because it is so volatile, and that the quest for perfect practice just makes people miserable. • How vulnerability is endearing to the people you lead. • And the wonderful quote he shares, that a master teacher knows the outcome before she or he starts, the good teacher kind of knows the outcome. Metro State Serial Police Impersonator Jeremy Dewitte on Jail Phone Call Crying and Begging His WifeFlorida Man: 6 Crazy Details Of A Serial Police ImpersonatorJeremy Dewitte is a serial police impersonator out of Orlando, Florida, and quite a prolific one at that. At the time of this writing, he is currently facing seven charges of falsely personating a police officer, along with a handful of other charges, with more being added as investigations continue. Dewitte's facing 85 years in prison, and if the court rules that he's a habitual felony offender, those sentences could be doubled. 170 years for being a wannabe cop. To put that into perspective, the leader of the NXIVM sex-trafficking cult only got 120.Make no mistake, Jeremy Dewitte is a very strange man, and the further you look into his story, the weirder it gets. We've dug into this story as far as we could without risking a psychotic breakdown, and we're barely able to scratch the surface here ...6What Is It With This Guy?Dewitte runs a company called Metro-State Special Services which, according to their own website, provides motorcycle escorts for funerals and VIPs and "offer a full fleet marked motorcade unites , such as Ford Crown Vic Patrol Cars and BMW / Kawasaki Patrol Motorcycles," that are "equipped with state-of-the-art communications and police style LED lighting and siren packages."And the company's police cosplay game is definitely en pointe. They've even been known to park their vehicles next to real police cars and even arrive at accident scenes simply to get photos of their fleet "in action" next to real police cars. They even had official-looking badges made, which, oddly enough, are made to look like the same ones used by the LAPD .While their website implies it heavily, they stop short of saying they offer actual security because Dewitte (as well as many on his staff) have felony records; as such, they legally cannot be licensed to provide security. They mainly do funeral escorts. They're supposed to escort the funeral procession to the cemetery and direct traffic at intersections to allow the procession to remain together from point A to B, and that's it. They have zero authority to enforce traffic laws or pull people over, yet there are dozens of videos showing Dewitte doing just that, and the fact that he uses his own body cam definitely isn't helping his legal defense. The YouTube channel Real World Police has perhaps the greatest treasure trove of Metro-State and Jeremy Dewitte's greatest hits, and these videos have a lot to unpack. Dewitte loves to appear like a cop, but when he pulls someone over, he handles the situation with all the grace and tact of a frat guy who just got beer spilled on him.As if pretending to be a cop wasn't enough, Jeremy also seemingly loves to play soldier too. He has been recorded multiple times bragging about his time in the Army Special Forces and his harrowing tale of airdropping into Fallujah. Behind his desk at his office, he displays the Army and Special Forces flags. He's also been photographed many times in an Army dress uniform. The truth is he never served a day in the military in his entire life, which could prove problematic if anyone could prove he ever used his stolen valor for any kind of financial gain. Even if his fake uniform got him so much as a 10% discount on an oil change, that's a federal offense.Related: So, The LAX Jetpack Guy Is Back5Florida Man BeginsJeremy Dewitte got his first taste for pretending to be a cop when he was just 18 years old.On May 18, 1998, a Mobil gas station attendant in Orlando saw Dewitt having a little trouble operating his gas pump. When the attendant saw the gold badge on Dewitte's belt, she assumed he was a cop and activated the pump for him. After Dewitte's prepaid Mobil card was declined, he claimed he had no other way of paying. When the attendant asked for his state-issued gasoline card that Florida cops typically used, he claimed to have left it at home. So, Jeremy gave his name, home address, date of birth, driver's license number, and phone number and promised to return later that day to pay for the $14.50 worth of gas.Of course, he never came back, so the gas station pressed charges. Fortunately, the information Dewitte gave was all correct, so the cops knew just where to find him. As it turned out, he was also a suspect in another gasoline theft case at a different Mobil station, and when the cops showed up at his house and his stepfather yelled out, "Jeremy, you're a f*****g liar, you told me that Mobil was the last one!", they knew they had their man.Police seized Jeremy's 1990 Dodge Shadow and found that not only had been tricked out with police lights front and back and three large metal antennas on the trunk, but inside was a box containing an unloaded revolver, six rounds of ammo, and two-speed loaders. The Police Athletic League license plate also helped sell the illusion that this could be a cop car if you squint hard. The badge DeWitte had on his belt that morning at the gas station? Well, that was an Oviedo Florida Police Explorer badge, which doesn't make you a cop any more than an Eagle Scout badge makes you an actual eagle.Jeremy really wanted to be a cop, but being 18 at the time and not being allowed to enroll in the academy until he was 19, he decided to fake it until he made it. The irony is, impersonating a police officer is a third-degree felony, which meant he would never get into the academy. Instead, he got sent to prison for a year.4His Beef With The Sheriff's OfficeJeremy Dewitte had said on multiple occasions that he runs a legitimate business and that all of the charges against him at the moment are part of a vendetta against him by the Orange County Sheriff's Office. This may very well be true, but in the same way that Disney has it out for people who make porn parodies of Frozen: They have a hard enough time trying to maintain a wholesome public image without having to put up with obscene knock-offs.True Crime Podcast 2022 Police Interrogations, 911 Calls and True Police Stories Podcast

This may very well be true, but in the same way that Disney has it out for people who make porn parodies of Frozen: They have a hard enough time trying to maintain a wholesome public image without having to put up with obscene knock-offs.

Metro State Serial Police Impersonator Jeremy Dewitte on Jail Phone Call Crying and Begging His Wife!FREE Crypto Daily and FUN Gaming! https://chips.gg/?r=gawidfinancialFlorida Man: 6 Crazy Details Of A Serial Police ImpersonatorJeremy Dewitte is a serial police impersonator out of Orlando, Florida, and quite a prolific one at that. Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Monday August 16th. Nearly 50 years ago a school bus crash killed eight Gunnison High School football players and their coach drew national attention. Now, Gunnison is preparing a memorial to mark the anniversary. Today - Hear from survivors of the crash on the legacy of this tragedy.  Before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today we're going back to August 16th 1999, when the students of Columbine High School in Jefferson County returned to school for the first time since the tragic shooting that took the lives of 13. When the 2,700 students arrived back at Columbine that morning, they raised the American flag to full staff…..it had flown half that high since April. For some, the moment was a triumph of spirit, for others, especially those with lost loved ones, it was too soon. The Columbine shootings remain a communal trauma and today, we remember the students who lost their lives, and those children, teachers, and families who continued on.  Now, our feature story.  Nearly 50 years ago, a school bus crash killed eight Gunnison High School football players and their coach. The tragedy drew national attention at the time, but it has since faded from memory across much of Colorado. Not so in Gunnison, which is preparing a memorial to mark the 50 year anniversary. Colorado Sun reporter Kevin Simpson recently spoke with several survivors of the crash and has written an article examining the legacy of the tragedy. He sat down with fellow Sun reporter John Ingold to talk about what he learned.  You can read more on the 1971 crash and its 50-year aftermath from The Sun's Kevin Simpson at ColoradoSun.com Thanks for listening. Finally, here are a few stories you should know about today: The creators of the wildly popular “South Park” animated TV show say they have a deal to buy and revive Casa Bonita, the iconic Mexican restaurant that is both beloved and reviled. Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who grew up in Colorado, announced their plans in a press conference with Gov. Jared Polis on Friday, but will have to navigate the bankruptcy of Casa Bonita's owner before the deal can close. One lane in each direction of Interstate 70 opened through Glenwood Canyon on Saturday morning. But it likely will be November before traffic is moving through the area at a pace approaching normal. The highway had been closed since July 29, when what transportation officials described as a 500-year weather event sent tons of rock, mud and debris flowing from the steep canyon onto the highway. The governor has requested $116 million from the federal government to cover the cost of repairs, which includes reconstructing parts of the westbound lanes. When mountainsides of mud and rock tumbled down to block Interstate 70 at Glenwood Canyon weeks ago, the mess stopped more than a highway. The debris also blocked off the most important river in the West, the Colorado. And while the stream started working its way through the rock pile almost immediately, the impact on river wildlife will last for years. Biologists are itching to get into the canyon to assess the damage and start offering fixes, while engineers are still worried about what's left to fall down the hillsides. Laura Richardson, who was an All America swimmer at Northglenn High and got her officer's commission through the ROTC at Metro State, has been promoted to 4-star general and commander of the Army's U.S. Southern Command. Richardson, who is 57, will be only the second currently-serving woman to earn the rank of four-star general, the second female four-star general in the Army's 246-year history, and the second female combatant commander. Today’s college coaches are forced to adopt new technology at a faster rate than ever before due to current and pending situations that are out of our control. What are the newest coaching tools that let any coach create a supportive environment online? The team must stay together but how can they do that without meeting together on the field? Join your host, Richie English, and the head coach of the CU Buffaloes women, Danny Sanchez to talk about coaching a healthy team in the midst of our new safety guidelines. In 1995, Mesa Community College hired Sanchez to coach both its men's and women soccer teams. From 1995 to 2001, he compiled a 103–15–5 record with the women's team and a 96–36–7 record with the men's team. He was also the 1995 and 2001 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.[1] In February 2002, Metropolitan State University hired Sanchez to coach its women's soccer team. Over six seasons, Sanchez took the Roadrunners to a 128–11–7 record and the 2004 and 2006 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship.[4] At the same time as he was coaching Metro State, Sanchez also served as the head coach of the Mile High Edge in the W-League.[5] In December 2007, Sanchez moved to the University of Wyoming. Sanchez did not experience as much success with the Cowgirls as with his two previous collegiate teams. Over four seasons, he took them to a 36–34–11 record.[6] On December 19, 2011, Sanchez became the head coach of the University of Colorado women's team.Follow the Buffaloes on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cubuffssoccerInstagram: @CUCoachSanchez

Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career

Last year found me teaching at Metro State and working on my podcast and my script. It was actually a fairly fun schedule, with interviews for each Monday episode and educational information for each mid-week episode. Whenever I interviewed someone who had written a book, I would read the book before interviewing them. Altogether, I read about 30 books in 2019. In 2019 I started doing some speaking engagements. So far, all of the appearances have been pro bono, but I'm hoping to start expanding to paid venues. My topics are "Air Combat Lessons in Leadership and Life", "Layover Security for Travelers" and "Airline Safety Improvements From Accident Investigations". In 2019 I started writing and revising books to accompany those presentations. Podcast guests Jason Harris and Lee Ellis have been incredibly helpful in guiding me on my journey. I met up with Jason at a local Denver meeting of the National Speakers Association, and Lee and I got together later in the year when he made a speaking appearance in Denver. Lee has been incredibly helpful in referring podcast guests to me, and his presentation left he huge audience mesmerized. In February Nick Hinch told me that United was hiring ground instructors, and I applied. I was accepted, and started Basic Indoctrination training, along with 40 new-hire pilots, at the beginning of April. I was put on the B737 fleet, and my job is to be a Groundschool Instructor, teaching systems and procedures on the B737 NG. Although I initially had hoped to go to the B777, I am thrilled on be on the 737. I get to work with new-hire pilots and new Captains, and I get to influence these pilots for the rest of their careers. United, it turned out, is a fantastic airline, totally changed from the toxic environment that existed in 2004. I attribute this change to the leadership under CEO Oscar Munoz, who is a breath of fresh air compared to the previous CEOs. At United, I'm working full-time, so it's sometimes a bit of a challenge deconflicting my United schedule with my Metro teaching schedule. But I love both jobs. In May the WGF Veterans Writing Group invited me to "pitch" my screenplay to eight Hollywood producers. The outstanding mentoring I had received throughout the previous year had really helped me refine my script to something I could be proud of. It was a fun experience, but I didn't get any nibbles at that time. But my son Steve met another producer at the Austin Film Festival and mentioned my script, and the producer said he'd like to read it. So, hope springs eternal - Steve helped me put a final polish on the script and I sent it off shortly before Christmas. I'll be totally honest: it's not GOOD, it's GREAT! Steve came out to Colorado in July and directed and produced the audio version of my book, Hamfist Over The Trail. He also produced the audiobook cover. I did the narration, and it was certainly not a walk in the park! Altogether we spent five days recording, and then Steve spent a lot of time editing the file. He removed every audible breath and glitch and equalized the audio files. I think we ended up with a really great product. The audiobook is now being reviewed for release at ACX, and we hope to have it available to the public very soon.
