My guest for Episode 12 is trumpet player and long-time advocate for women in jazz, Ellen Seeling. A Milwaukee native, Ellen was the first woman to earn a degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University. In 1975 she moved to New York City, where she worked with the likes of The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, Machito, the Slide Hampton Big Band, Luther Vandross, Laura Nyro, The Temptations, Isis and Martha Reeves, among countless others. In 1980, Ellen and her now-wife, saxophonist and composer Jean Fineberg, formed the jazz fusion band DEUCE, recording two albums, and touring all over the United States. In 1989 the two relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area where they continued to play with DEUCE and several other ensembles, and in 1998 Ellen founded the Montclair Women’s Big Band, in an effort to provide greater visibility for the Bay Area community of women jazz artists. Ellen also spent many years teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Jazzschool in Berkeley, California, and has held teaching positions at a number of other universities and events including Indiana University, Pennsylvania State University and the Kansas City Women’s Jazz Festival. In 2009 Ellen founded and co-directed the United States’ first summer jazz camp for girls, the Girls’ Jazz & Blues Camp, featuring a women’s faculty from the Montclair Women’s Big Band. Then, in 2015, Ellen co-founded Jazzwomen and Girls Advocates, in an effort to address the systemic and historic gender discrimination in jazz. Thus far, the organisation has consulted with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, playing a role in their adoption of new hiring processes, and also helped to encourage the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 500% increase in women instrumentalists programmed for its 2018 edition.Ellen and I caught up via Zoom in early April to discuss her experience coming up as a young female trumpet player in the late 1960s and early ‘70s; being invited to play professionally with the all-women jazz-rock band Isis and the legendary Laura Nyro while she was still in college; her experience living and working in New York for almost 15 years, often playing with otherwise all-male bands and orchestras; her work with Jazzwomen and Girls Advocates, in particular their lobbying of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Monterey Jazz Festival; and some of the music that has inspired her over her career.https://www.montclairwomensbigband.com/ (Ellen’s profile: https://www.montclairwomensbigband.com/about-us/ellen-seeling-bio)https://jazzwomenadvocates.org/Ellen on Marian McPartland’s ‘Piano Jazz’: https://www.npr.org/2013/12/06/249318939/ellen-seeling-on-piano-jazz Jean’s website, which features work by both Ellen and Jean: https://deuceband.com/https://soundcloud.com/montclairwomensbigband And my Q&A with Melbourne International Jazz Festival: https://www.melbournejazz.com/news/womeninjazzpodcast-qna/ Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/womeninjazz)

Adrian Cunningham is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and world traveler. Originally from Sydney, Australia and now based in New York, Adrian is proving to be one of his country's top exports.  With fluent command of the saxophones, clarinet, and flute, he is one of the finest multi-instrumentalists in jazz today.  Adrian is the recipient of the Hot House Saxophone Award for 2017.  Adrian's band, Professor Cunningham and His Old School, is the winner of international band competition World Jam (Madrid: 2016, 2017) and Best Band Award at 2017 Harlem Festival (Vilnius, Lithuania).  When he is not busy performing in New York with some of its finest players, he is touring the world playing jazz festivals and swing events.   Since relocating to New York City in 2008, Adrian has performed at some of the Big Apple's finest clubs, including The Blue Note, Smalls, Birdland, 55 Bar, Apollo Theatre, Fat Cat, Dizzy's at Jazz at Lincoln Center and even an event at the hallowed Village Vanguard.  He has played with such jazz stars as Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Jon Batiste, George Coleman Jr., Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, Ted Rosenthal, Chris Potter and René Marie.  Adrian is currently performing with world-class trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, including a performance at the London Jazz Festival and a recording in Abbey Road Studios alongside Wess Anderson, Reginald Veal and Herlin Riley.  Adrian's travels with the Wycliffe Gordon quintet have also included appearances at the Johannesburg Jazz Festival, Bern Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Newport Jazz Festival and regular performances in New York at Dizzy's at Jazz at Lincoln Center.  Adrian has also appeared on two of Wycliffe's albums to rave reviews (“One of the unexpected joys [of the album] is the rich, woody clarinet of Cunningham,” Hot House NYC). In 2013 Cunningham formed a traditional New Orleans-style outfit called Professor Cunningham and His Old School, deeply rooted in the jazz tradition.  They have become one of the top bands on the international Swing scene, performing at the Blue Note Jazz Festival (NYC), Melbourne International Jazz Festival (Australia), Sopot Molo Jazz Festival (Poland), Snowball (Stockholm), SLOX (California), CPH:LX (Copenhagen) and Melbourne International Jazz Festival.  Cunningham also has a busy individual jazz festival schedule, including repeat appearances at the North Carolina Jazz Festival, Central Illinois Jazz Festival, Newport plus concerts at the famous Gennett studios (Richmond, Indiana).  Additional international festival credits include Montreux Jazz Festival (3 times), Johannesburg, Japan, London, Tokyo and Sopot Molo (Poland). From 2014 to 2017, Adrian was the leader of the saxophone section of the Grammy-winning Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, a NYC-based 1920s swing orchestra responsible for the soundtracks for “Boardwalk Empire” and movies including The Aviator.  As a leader, he has recorded ten CDs and two DVDs both in Australia with his quartet and also in New York through Arbors Records.  His 2017 release Jazz Speak, recorded with jazz stars Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton and Ted Rosenthal, broke the top 20 in the U.S. national JazzWeek charts. His new CD Adrian Cunningham & His Friends Play Lerner & Loewe – which explores the jazz influence of the legendary songwriting team known for iconic musicals like My Fair Lady, Camelot and Brigadoon – features Fred Hersch on piano, John Hébert on bass and Eric McPherson on drums, with guest stars Randy Brecker on trumpet and Wycliffe Gordon on trombone.  On this episode, Adrian shares his one way ticket to Barcelona. In this episode, we spoke with Jack Mussett, Director at Motherbird. Jack has been on our infamous industry wish list since the beginning of the podcast so it was great to finally get a chance to speak with him in his hometown of Melbourne. We spoke about work-life balance, overdelivering on projects, working with friends, side projects, and diversity. We got philosophical with talk about critical thinking and the meandering brain. We dove into a few projects including The World Cancer Congress the Melbourne International Jazz Festival as well as some of his personal projects including Word–Form. Special thanks to Streamtime for helping us make this episode happen and Tina Victoria Afshar for joining Guest Host! “It’s important to sometimes not have a goal and just enjoy the journey” – Jack Instagram instagram.com/jackmussett instagram.com/motherbirdstudio instagram.com/wordformco instagram.com/tinavictoria_ instagram.com/streamtime Twitter twitter.com/jackmussett twitter.com/motherbird twitter.com/wordformco twitter.com/tinavictoria_ twitter.com/streamtime Web motherbird.com.au Word-form.com tinavictoria.com streamtime.net

The Melbourne international jazz festival, now in its 18th year is Melbourne’s premier jazz festival which takes over the city for 9 days in june showcasing local and international talent in different concert halls, bars and occasionally laneways! This year I was lucky enough to attend three completely different yet equally exiting events: Tomasz Stańko Band, Vince Jones and the astral orchestra, and Jose James. Polish born Tomasz Stanko has been a jazz trumpeter since the 60s, touring the world time and time again and working on film scores. His performance at the Coopers Malthouse was a true testament to his experimental yet highly skilled approach to jazz. Accompanied by Alexi Tuomarila on piano, Slawomir Kurkiewics on bass and Olavi Louhivuori on drums, the four absolutely filled the space of the theatre unlike any others! Performing a total of six songs, interspersed with extensive improvisation, the band created the classic dizzying jazz atmosphere and had the entire audience bopping their heads, slapping their knees and completely entranced. The band nor Stanko virtually ever stoped throughout the performance, expect for at the beginning to introduce themselves, and seemed to be as captivated by the music they were making as the audiences were listening to that music. Over all this performance was the true epitome of jazz – dizzying and disorientating, yet completely enthralling. In contrast, Vince Jones and the Astral Orchestra presented a much more rehearsed show as they paid tribute to the music of Van Morison. Vince Jones, who has been an Australian jazz vocalist legend for over 20 years joined forces with the seven piece Astral Orchestra, which was specially brought together for the event by musical director, Matt McMahon. Together they performed, and reimagined the songs of Van Morrison from his albums Moondance and Astral Weeks. This was a very interesting and creative evening as Jones and the Astral Band covered, and put a unique jazz spin on what is typically rock music. It was very enjoyable hearing Morrisons music in jazz form! Arguably the show did justice to both genres, and to both of the legendary artists. for those who are fans of both, or even either artists or genres and want to see rock in jazz form, or jazz with the influence or rock, then Vince Jones and the Astral Orchestra will be performing at the Recital Centre tonight as part of an extended run. Finally, in a one-off exclusive evening, José Jones presented the music of Billie Holiday. American born, Jones is a well-regarded jazz vocalist but has also had great success in r’n’b and even hip hop, and you could really see this influence coming through in his tribute. Together with a highly skilled band, Jones played homage to the jazz legend that he considered his ‘musical mother’ in the same year that would have been her centennial. Jones did a sensational job performing what were the songs most important to him and his career, but adding his own unique, r’n’b influenced spin on them. His smooth yet powerful voice managed to completely fill the packed Hammer Hall, as he gave offered what was, for a lack of a better word, a sexy rendition of songs such as Yesterday I Had, and God Bless, interspersed with personal anecdotes about how Holiday influenced his career and the careers of his peers. Jones love and admiration of the great Lady Day was extremely evident not only in the way he sang her songs, but also in how he told her stories and the picture he painted of the blues legend. The show culminated in an encore which featured the most enthralling and unique rendition of Strange Fruit, arguably one of Holidays most famous songs, which Jones performed solo with the use of a loop pedal! Not only did this do true justice to an extremely controversial and sacred track, it was a stroke of genius and left the audience in awe. The Melbourne International Jazz Festival ends for another year tonight! IF you still have a chance then do your self a favour and get down to experience some local or international experimental talent. Sex On Toast: Sex On Toast are a funked up lot, specialising in overblown choreography and onstage antics, these new-jack swingers feel ripped straight from another era. Last month saw the release of their brand new single, “Oh Loretta”, a throwback track that could have been recorded in the 70’s, but is nevertheless yesterday fresh. Equal parts righteous and ridiculous, Sex On Toast are known for their raucous and engaging live shows. These Festival regulars, have performed on numerous stages across Australia, from Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Adelaide Fringe, to Apollo Bay Music Festival and Woodford Folk where this set was recorded. Live from the Bazaar stage and running through the new year, this is Sex On Toast. Recorded & Mixed by John Robinson. Recorded at Woodford Folk Festival, 27th December, 2014. The Eagle Junction: Local band The Eagle Junction are hard at work at the the moment, touring their particular brand of blues pop, kitsch-rock around Australia. After taking home the prize for Best Original Song at this year’s Qube Effect with their track, Your Face Ruins My Day, the band have gone on to release their debut LP.
