A finance deal reached at the COP29 summit in Azerbaijan to help less-developed countries tackle climate change has been bitterly criticised for failing to meet the scale of the challenge. We talk to those who support it and those who say it is a “slap in the face”.Also in the programme: UK parliament prepares to vote on a bill giving ill adults in England and Wales the right to choose to end their life; and London Jazz Festival hosts a special acknowledgement of 30 years of post-apartheid democracy in South Africa.(Credit: Activists protest to urge world leaders to commit to a strong climate finance deal during COP29, in Baku Photo: Reuters.)

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has launched a ratings system to let patients see which IVF add-ons are backed-up by evidence. Emma Barnett is joined by Professor Tim Child, chair of the HFEA's Scientific and Clinical Advances Advisory Committee, and Jessica Hepburn, who spent over £70,000 on unsuccessful fertility procedures. In October 2019, Coleen Rooney was concerned by articles appearing in newspapers that could only have come from stories on her private Instagram account. She laid a trap for the account she suspected of the leak, and then told the world ‘It was…Rebekah Vardy's account'. Rebekah Vardy, who continues to deny she was the source of those stories, sued Coleen for libel. In a radio exclusive, Coleen speaks to Emma about her side of the story, told in a new documentary: The Real Wagatha Story. Jazz/soul singer Mica Millar is performing as part of the London Jazz Festival in November. She joins Anita Rani to talk about her new album, Heaven Knows, which she wrote while recovering from a spinal injury during lockdown. Britain's long-awaited Online Safety Bill is days away from becoming law. Emma talks to legal expert Joshua Rozenburg about what will be in the act. She's also joined by Baroness Kidron, who has been very involved in getting the act through the Houses of Parliament, and Rashik Parmar, CEO of BCS, the chartered institute of IT, about the future of online safety. Are we becoming afraid of our phones? A recent survey suggest half of 12 to 26-year-olds don't answer the phone to their parents and a third of them feel awkward speaking on the phone generally. As his new recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra of the complete symphonies of Anton Bruckner - all eleven of them - hit the record stores, Tom Service speaks to the German conductor Christian Thielemann. He tells Tom about what had, for him, been a burning desire to embark on the journey to record all of the composer's symphonies, as well as the consolations of working with one of the world's greatest orchestras. Thielemann shares his vision, too, for audiences in the German capital following the recent news he'll succeed Daniel Barenboim as the General Music Director of the Berlin State Opera. With preparations well underway for this year's London Jazz Festival, Tom catches-up with the ‘Queen of African Music' - Angélique Kidjo. She describes her first encounter with Beethoven among the vinyl records of classical music her father had collected before the disruption of Benin's dictatorships, and speaks about her escape to Paris in the 1980s, as well as the joyous spirit of defiance and power of music in the conflicts she's witnessed in Sudan and Uganda. And as ensembles around the country gear up for the finals of this year's National Brass Band Championships, Music Matters eavesdrops on the preparatory rehearsals of last year's winner's, Foden's Brass Band. With contributions from principal cornet, Mark Wilkinson, principal trombone and Chairman, John Barber, flugel horn player, Melanie Whyle, and conductor, Russell Gray, Tom also speaks to the composer of this year's test piece, Edward Gregson, about his ‘Of Men and Mountains', which will be performed by twenty bands at this year's championships.

A new report out today from the CQC - the Care Quality Commission - says that almost two thirds of maternity units provide dangerously substandard care that puts women and babies at risk. It has rated 65% of maternity services in England as either "inadequate" or "requires improvement", an increase from 54% last year. And yesterday saw the first debate in Parliament about birth trauma and the injuries suffered by some women in labour. The Conservative MP Theo Clarke has campaigned for better support for mothers following her own traumatic experience after giving birth to her daughter in August 2022. She gave her powerful testimony to Parliament in an effort to get birth trauma added to the women's health strategy and improve perinatal care for women. First we hear from Chief Executive of the CQC, Ian Trenholm, and then consultant obstetrician Dr Daghni Rajasingham. After Ruhama Wolle took on the bridesmaid mantle three times in the space of 18 months, she decided to never say yes to the role, ever again. She penned an open letter resigning from all future bridesmaid requests, addressed to all her family and friends in Glamour Magazine US, where she works as Special Projects Editor. She joins Anita Rani to talk about why she's opted out of the type of friendship being a bridesmaid requires. A prize-winning poet and currently Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Arizona State University, Safiya Sinclair, has now written a stunning memoir, How to Say Babylon. It looks at her childhood and teenage years growing up in an ultra-strict Rastifari family in Jamaica, and how literature and poetry changed the trajectory of her life. The soul/jazz singer Mica Millar has amassed almost five million streams on Spotify, and her debut album has been championed by the likes of Trevor Nelson and Jamie Cullum. This summer she's had sold out shows, festival appearances at Love Supreme and the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, plus opening slots for Gregory Porter and Lionel Ritchie. Mica is to perform at the Union Chapel as part of London Jazz Festival's opening weekend in November. Joel Prime joins me from London to discuss his musical journey which began after he received his first set of drums for Christmas when he was three years old. He initially taught himself the basics, then began lessons with John Zac when he was 6, and by age 11, Joel was playing regular gigs. Joel's drumming prowess was immediately evident, and by being taught by many of Adelaide's elite drum educators, attending Marryatville High School, which offers a fabulous SIMC program, combined with a solid regime of practice, he soon developed his sparkling technique. Joel's acquired skill through hard work and persistence became his entrée card to a world of musical diversity. In his teens Joel was part of the Marryatville High School Stage Band, the group travelled for performances in London, New York, Los Angeles, Melbourne, and Sydney. These gigs paved the way for Joel to share the stage with such performers as Bob Mintzer, James Morrison, Bobby Shew, John Hoffman, Rhonda Burchmore, Jon Gordon, Tony Kofi, Alina Bzhezhinska, Ray Vega, Paul Bollenback, George Garzone and Pharoah Sanders. He was inspired to begin percussion after seeing his teacher Steve Todd performing together with his son Ben, in the popular Adelaide band 'Goose'. Joel took a break from studying music in the last 2 years of high school, and for a while was contemplating becoming a pilot, thankfully his love of music returned and he successfully auditioned for the The Elder Conservatorium of Music, at the University of Adelaide, where he was taught by another previous BAND IT ABOUT guest Laurie Kennedy. In 2005, he was awarded most outstanding percussionist at Generations in Jazz by James Morrison. In 2008, he received a prestigious performance award from Downbeat magazine (USA) as a member of the 2008 Adelaide University Big Band 1. Later that year, Joel received the Helpmann Academy Award for Jazz Drums, for graduating at the top of his class at the Elder Conservatorium in 2006 and 2007, then received the 2010 Helpmann Academy Award for most outstanding Honours graduate. Joel has led percussion workshops and performed at WOMADelaide, Glastonbury Festival, London Jazz Festival, Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Fringe Festival, and The Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Joel's burgeoning skill set continues to be recognized by the drumming elite. Joel is currently endorsed by Pearl Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth drumsticks and Remo drumheads. In 2011 he won the award for Australia's Best Up and Coming Drummer (Open age category) at Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend. It was Joel's parents who initially floated the idea of him going overseas to expand his music career, and as he already had a British passport, moving to London was the obvious choice. Joel didn't know anyone in London, so it took a while for him to begin to get work, but once his talents were seen at the open jam nights that he was regularly attending, he began to receive job offers. Joel is a member of the critically acclaimed 'Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet', who have appeared at the Jazz Legend Festival in Birmingham and many other venues around the UK including top London jazz clubs The Crypt and The Vortex. They appeared at the London Jazz Festival 2017 in a triple bill performance along with Coltrane' s specialist Denys Baptist and the legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. Joel's versatility across congas, drum kit and all manner of Afro Cuban and Brazilian percussion now sees him performing with a vast array of ensembles across many musical styles. Joel also performs with 'Mr Little's Noisy Band' and 'London Street Band.' Music: "Band It About" theme song written & recorded by Catherine Lambert & Michael Bryant. Outro "Los Caballos" written by Alina Bzhezhinska, performed by the Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet. Vietnam, ecological worries and poverty and suffering inspired the lyrics in Marvin Gaye's 1971 album What's Going On. UK Jazz artist/producer/journalist Fiona Ross chats about her new album, women in jazz, and the London Jazz Fest! All on Episode 19, Season 3. Fiona Ross is one of those people that I keep coming back to. Fiona is very inspirational and very much a role model of what is truly the meaning of success as a creative artist. I spoke with her from her London home the night after her 5th new album launch gig. I could see from all the build-up to the event, and the buzz all over social media that this new (5th) album titled: "Red Flags and High Heels" was a resounding success even after just 24 hours!  Fiona explained her motivation for this 5th album concept, and how it was clearly a progressive linear timeline as is weaved throughout all her albums to date. We also talked about her founding "Women In Jazz Media" It's simply birth to continued exponential growth, now with 16 team members and a UK parliamentary award for Jazz Media Excellence, and the promoting of equal rights for women in the UK jazz industry.  I highly recommend you check out the consummate musicianship of Fiona and the other musicians on this wonderful album. The production is super professional quality for an album that is totally self-funded. Look out for more coming with Fiona and me as I head over to the London Jazz Festival - reporting live for Music Matters Podcast and playing my bass guitar as a guest at one of Fiona's London Jazz Festival gigs. She will be singing with Archie Shepp at the Barbican for the LJF.   The organisation Women In Jazz aims to elevate female performers by hosting events and workshops. They have a network of 6,000 artists  from singer-songwriters to producers, instrumentalists and composers. Elizabeth Bernholz conceived the moniker Gazelle Twin in 2009 under which she has released the critically acclaimed albums; Pastoral (2018), Kingdom Come (2017), Unflesh (2014) and her debut, The Entire City (2011). Adopting a radical and conceptual approach to composition, fusing classical and early traditions with experimental, electronic production, Bernholz always strives for “challenging outcomes”. Her work is often presented through extraordinary live performances, which feature changing personas and voice as a central element. Aside from her own projects, Bernholz regularly collaborates with creators in Theatre, TV, Film and Gaming. 2020 and beyond will see the release of two feature films (USA and UK) which will feature her music, new works exploring live theatre and virtual performance, and an ongoing collaboration with the London-based NYX electronic drone choir following it's performance at London Jazz Festival, QEH in November 2019. Bernholz's experiments in composition and production were recognised by the University of Sussex (of which she is an alumna), and in 2020 the ‘Gazelle Twin scholarship for Women in Music Technology' was setup to address the under-representation of women in music technology.   The new album 'Deep England' by Gazelle Twin & NYX Electronic Drone Choir is out 19.03.2021 on NYX Collective Records. Ciao a tutte e a tutti.

When we think of music coming out of England in the 1960s, it's often in relation to the Mersey Beat, psychedelia, prog rock, or The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. England was also going through a folk music revival in a different way to the American one in the early sixties thanks to a number of artists who saw fit to combine the traditional songs of generations gone with a contemporary approach.Welcome to episode 134 of Love That Album podcast.I am joined once again, by blues guitarist and vocalist, Shane Pacey, to discuss the third album from English band Pentangle, Basket of Light, released in 1969. There were other great bands like Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention that were finding ways of mixing folk with rock. Pentangle had a jazz rhythm section, a guitarist in the blues tradition, a guitarist trained classically, and a singer who leaned in both a blues and folk direction. Recipe for chaos? Nope, because these were all seasoned musicians who knew how to blend their skills into a common vision.Shane and I talk about our earliest memories of the band, the individual members' other projects, and a whole mess of other related topics, while hopefully convincing you that Basket of Light is one of the great albums deserving of your attention.BUT WAIT...there's more.I spoke with British jazz flautist, Rowland Sutherland who'd been invited by the London Jazz Festival in 2019 to assemble a band and play Basket Of Light live in its entirety as a tribute to the album's 50th anniversary.
