Melbourne Fashion Week is coming to close, after a week marked with controversy following a dozen Black Australian models boycotting the event to highlight the fashion industry's mistreatment of people of colour. Making headlines across the country and overseas, the public boycott sparked further action across the week, with additional models choosing to snub the event. This week Mel and Trish chat to the gorgeous Penny Hill. Pen is part of a growing movement of change of midlife women appearing in runway fashion shows and advertising campaigns. She began her modelling career at 54, and at 58 made her runway debut at Melbourne Fashion Week. Boundaries are important to set early in your career. I hope if there's younger artists out there listening now that they know it's okay to say no. There's so much talk about all of this right now in the media, especially if it's a woman doing it to you, it can feel very different. It's your right to say no, no matter the circumstances. When the stakes are high on a job, it's a lot more stressful. Often the thing that stresses you out, makes you feel so good after you do them. As you get older you learn that it will be okay, that if things don't work out, it will still all work out. “I was wondering why I had IBS… but it's from all the stress. It's like, OMG I'm not bloody saving lives, but you feel like you are, you feel like if you make a mistake, you might as well, run away and live on an island somewhere. (but) I learnt the importance of setting boundaries and saying no.” Kylie O'Toole PERSISTANCE PAYS OFF. Be persistent. If all you take away from this podcast episode is one thing, it's that persistence pays off! When you're just starting out, it's hard to know where to draw professional lines in the sand. Sometimes you have to chase up a client, an account, a company. Sometimes the hours are long, very long. It can be intense and ‘feel like camp' laughs Kylie. Everything is heightened (including your emotions), but being persistent, full of passion and being open to new opportunities is part of the fun.  Kylie understands that putting yourself out there is almost scarier than getting the work. Your first test shoot, your first paid shoot, the first time with a new client. It can be *bloody* scary, but they can often turn into the best experiences. ‘When I arrived in London, all I had was a phone number and (she) never answered… I just kept on trying, kept on calling. I was persistent. And then one day she finally answered the phone… She turned out to be the most awesome human in the world, Scottish tough with a heart of gold. She used to tell me to toughen up constantly, she's so creative and clever – she's actually the designer of GoT.'   BEING A PERSONAL MUA. You are special and in demand, but also often isolated – is what Kylie says is key to being a personal mua. A mua on set assists any of the models/actors and is responsible for everything hair & makeup related, whereas a personal makeup artist on set means you are only responsible for looking after one person. To a novice artist (or working on a new set) it can feel like you're kind of ‘mocking' the rest of the crew, because you're not necessarily part of the makeup department. Instead, you come in at specific times to assist one person. It can be a pretty special opportunity, but also a bit isolating. As a personal mua, your job can be challenging and fun in the essence of creating something ‘perfect'. For Kylie, she learnt a lot from a very hard boss… but admits she ‘needed therapy' afterwards. “It's actually really good when you have something (to work with) that's not perfect, because you're like, I have to actually trick the (untrained) eye into thinking that this is perfect. If you're surrounded by great people that are kind and have full tummies (Snickers captured this so eloquently – ‘you're not you when you're hungry') then you have lots of fun. K, that's a confronting episode title huh. Obviously we will need to address that at some stage, but FIRST, let's talk about our special Christmas celebration. Michael's outdoor activities involved flights interstate, movie screenings and dinner with his partner Adrian and Adrian's mum, plus visits to an underground club with shoddy ventilation. Em's outdoor jaunts included panic buying an outfit before attending a Melbourne Fashion Week event, being extra around a bunch of famous peeps and having to meet the paparazzi on the red carpet. The full rundown of Em and Michael being out in the wild amongst humanity is completely detailed within. Sadly the title of this episode is also a reflection of how Em's night out on the town wrapped up. Yep she's got gastro, or maybe it's food poisoning, the jury is still out, but whatever it is, it has successfully ruined Em's ability to sleep or eat, as well as making a mess of a variety of outfits and also increasing her fear of ever farting again, all pretty standard results really. Of course Em's telling of her troubles is enough to usher Michael into revealing his tricky bowel moment which managed to send a pair of jeans into permanent retirement to a bin somewhere. After that great leveller, we do an abrupt and totally unrelated pivot to Taylor Swift, so we can talk about the re-release of her Red album. This time around we've got much movie action to talk through. The Emsolation safe word has been used on the streets, Em attended a movie premiere, ruined her photo op on the red carpet, and bumped into Shaynna Blaze from ‘The Block'. She also has the opening of Melbourne Fashion Week to attend next week, all by her lonesome, so expect more awkward red carpet moments to follow. There's also a trigger warning for anyone who might have experienced a miscarriage, or the loss of a child, as Em talks about the anniversary of losing her son Ray in her introduction. Once Michael arrives, we start by giving him some more props for the extra AACTA Award nominations his show ‘The Newsreader' secured during the week. We also need to celebrate the fact that his glorious cameo as an 80's DJ, with fully functioning mullet, that featured in the TV series, was photographed and has now made its debut within the pages of Australia's best selling magazine for gay men, DNA. More about why he's in there, what cum gutters are, and why he isn't wearing see through wet white mesh, like the hefty hung escort that features on the cover, within the podcast. Once we've waded through all that testosterone, we'll get across the news that they've started announcing the casting for a movie version of the Broadway musical ‘Wicked'. It's the one and only musical Em has ever seen on actual Broadway, so she is all up in its grill (expect lots of Em singing hooks from almost all of the soundtrack within this section). Anyway, while Em is totally down for the first two announcements of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, and Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good Witch, the suggestion that the arch nemesis for lovers of musical movies, James Corden, will be cast in it, has thrown Em into a spiral of DO. NOT. WANTS. Not surprisingly it has also caused an uproar from over 73,000 peeps, who also love a movie musical, but can't stand it when James Corden forces himself into it, to click through and type their names with gusto, into the change.org petition that demands he have nothing to do with it. After we've poured more petrol onto that raging bin fire, we'll give Adam Driver a teensy serve as well. Truth be told, Em is a huge stan for Adam, she's loved him from his days on ‘Girls', adored him in the Star Wars reboot, and even got hot around the collar when he turned into a rugged half horse, half bare chested mansicle for a Burberry fragrance campaign. However, she is not about to excuse him for not putting enough farshun realness into his red carpet choices for the world premiere in London of his new film ‘The House of Gucci'. Especially when his co-stars, Jared Leto, Salma Hayek and the one and only Lady Gaga, all served the kind of red carpet drama we live for, Adam however turned up in a two piece suit from Burberry that was meh to the extreme. There's also the premier of the new Bond film ‘No Time To Die' for Em to reflect on before we to talk about the sex infused fanfiction that someone DM'd the Emsolation podcast about featuring Dan Andrews and Brett Sutton. Both Em and Michael will read some saucy passages, there's even some ‘The Newsreader' fanfiction as well. Nikki is a champion for others in the disability sector and gentle disrupter. Overcoming trauma and PTSD, Nikki credits her survival to her two beautiful sons and her love of fashion design. The catalyst for design was a determined desire to find a new way of expressing the best of herself through her work, after being left permanently legally blind by a stroke, at the same time as becoming a mother for the first time. Nikki is the founder of Blind Grit, creating athleisure wear, and based on a business model that is built entirely of & around those who live with disability & survive trauma. All the aspirational, fun, dream jobs that sit behind the creation of a fashion label. Nikki's first collection was on the catwalk at the ground breaking Access to Fashion event for Melbourne Fashion Week 2018, and Nikki was invited back to the opening of Melbourne Fashion Week 2019. A Woman of Influence- Carly Findlay Say Hello with Carly... Carly Findlay is an award-winning  writer,  speaker  and  appearance activist. Her first book, a memoir called 'Say Hello,' was released in Australia in January 2019. She is also working on editing 'Growing Up Disabled in Australia' with Black Inc Books. She writes on disability and appearance diversity issues for news outlets including the ABC, The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, and SBS. She was named as one of Australia's most influential women in the 2014 Australian Financial Review and Westpac 100 Women of Influence Awards. She has appeared on ABC TV's 'You Can't Ask That' and 'Cyberhate' with Tara Moss, and has been a regular on various ABC radio programs. She has spoken at the Melbourne Writers Festival, the University of Western England and Melbourne University – to name a few. She organised the history-making Access to Fashion – a Melbourne Fashion Week event featuring disabled models. She has a Masters of Communication and Bachelor of eCommerce. Chiara is a music composer and producer born and raised in Torino, Italy but now based in Australia. DJing under the moniker Chiara Kickdrum, she might just be one of the most decorated DJs currently operating out of Melbourne. She has performed at a range of venues across Australia and overseas, supporting international acts such as Kiasmos, Marcel Dettmann, Nina Kraviz, Dopplereffekt, DJ Stingray and Underground Resistance, as well as appearing at Pitch Music Festival, Melbourne Music Week, Meredith Music Festival and Dark Mofo in Hobart. In light of the Australian premiere season of Yohji Yamamoto: Dressmaker screening exclusively as part of Melbourne Fashion Week at ACMI, film programmer James Nolen will be joined by fashion experts, fashion historians and Yamamoto super fans, as they delve into the history of this celebrated Japanese designer.
