Today, we're focusing on Chicago — the country's third largest (and one of the most diverse) cities, and a city that has been a blueprint for housing segregation. While the discriminatory practice of racial redlining was officially outlawed in 1968, the practice still reverberates throughout the city today. For every dollar loaned by banks in Chicago's white neighborhoods, they invest just 12 cents in the city's Black neighborhoods, and 13 cents in Latino areas, according to a 2020 study by WBEZ and City Bureau. A typical household's wealth in the richest area of Chicago is 206 times higher than a typical household's wealth in the poorest area. This continued inequity lies at the crux of the city's ongoing struggles against gun and gang violence, unemployment, and homelessness, but are often overlooked. The system was designed to create these problems, and has worked as intended. Now, it's time to learn how so many Chicagoans were set up to struggle, and how we can all be a part of undoing the legacy of racism that pervades the city's maps. Here to talk to us about Chicago's infamous housing history, ongoing consequences, and nationwide influence, is Mike Amezcua, associate history professor at Georgetown University and author of “Making Mexican Chicago: From Postwar Settlement to the Age of Gentrification.”

Healthcare workers in homes face increased exposure risk to Covid-19, just like traditional front line workers. So why are employers using loopholes in the law to avoid paying some essential workers sick leave? The Families First Coronavirus Response Act covers pay, if you’re infected by COVID. For home healthcare workers, it’s only if they contract it from a client. The issue is that home healthcare workers exposure risks extend far beyond their clients. If they’re doing the job properly, they’re exposed to their clients, other caregivers, their family members and friends, as well as nearly daily contact with the public at large as they handle their client’s daily affairs. In this episode, one home healthcare worker talks about how she was able to finally get paid after catching COVID-19 on the job.Reporter BIA MEDIOUS (she/her) is a native Chicagoan, journalist and audio producer. She helped produce podcasts at USA Today, including “The City” which investigated the environmental injustice that remained after the FBI closed Operation Silver Shovel. A 4ª edição do Redação Aberta recebe a especialista norte-americana Jane Kirtley, da Faculdade de Jornalismo da University of Minnesota e diretora-executiva por 14 anos do The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. In the Fall of 2017, it was announced that all four of the last remaining Englewood neighborhood high schools would be closing. Three of them will be dissolved over the next three years, but Paul Robeson High School, which opened in 1977, had it's last day of school on Tuesday, June 19. It will be demolished to make way for a new, $85-million high school. Since its opening four decades ago, Robeson High School has been a staple in the Englewood neighborhood—one that's garnered community pride and supported student growth. It has also been a place of disinvestment, neglect, and several failed education policies. Its closure leaves a hole in the hearts and minds of the many students, staff, parents, and community members who interacted with Robeson High School over the decades. For the past six months, we at South Side Weekly Radio—Erisa Apantaku, Olivia Obineme, Bridget Vaughn, and Bridget Newsham—have been collecting memories and experiences from former students, teachers, staff members, parents, and community members. In this hour of radio, we take you through those four decades of Robeson history, through the stories of people from the Robeson community. If you’re a Robeson Raider who wants your memories preserved, email us at southsideweeklyradio@gmail.com.
