The Cry of Granuaile is a genre-defying blend of psychodrama and fantasy from Dónal Foreman, award winning director of the The Image You Missed (the IFTA-nominated documentary named by the Irish Times as one of the 50 best Irish films ever made.) Filmed on lush 16mm film and starring Dale Dickey and Judith Roddy, The Cry of Granuaile follows a grieving American filmmaker and her Irish assistant on a tour of the west of Ireland as they research a film about Granuaile (aka Grace O'Malley), the legendary 16th century rebel and pirate queen. The two women develop an uneasy intimacy as they journey towards the remote Clare Island, where boundaries begin to blur between past and present, myth and history, dream and reality. The film opened at the Irish Film Institute in Dublin on Friday, September 2nd at 6:20pm and at the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork on Sunday, September 4th at 4:30pm. Screenings at Galway's Eye Cinema begin on Friday September 9th. Dónal Foreman will be in attendance for a Q&As at each city's first screening. We also find out more about the Irish Film Festival and telling Irish stories through film. Enda reflects on his early inspiration for creating the festival and getting a conversation to happen in Australia about Irish issues. We find out about the various day-to-day practical tasks of planning such a film festival, including interactions with film producers, directors, distributors, cinemas, and sponsors as well as responsive and ongoing coordination of the festival team, largely made up of community volunteers. Enda offers insights into the conventional film festival cinema experience, as well as the various the challenges and opportunities of increasingly popular online streaming options. We chat about the often complex issues related to Irish history, culture, and identity, especially within an Australian context. Enda reflects on the shared and universal experiences of a range of social groups: culturally and linguistically diverse, low socio-economic, Indigenous, ethnic minorities, migrants, and others. We explore the value of ethnic film festivals in providing an important community voice that helps to connect with culture, as well as facilitating broader connections, conversations and cultural exchange. Judith Blackburn, director of the Chicago Irish Film Festival says the strongest films coming out of Ireland are horror stories. Though a good comedy would also go down well. Garvin and George felt in their element creating more horror and generating laughs all the way. With feral children lost in the attics down in Thomastown, with creaky floorboards, spiders webs, and strange moaning noises sending shivers down George's spine. Sorry, no that's just Garvin moving some furniture around on the third floor preparing for the newest guests to up-and-coming boot camps. Getting back to the plot, the Chicago Irish Film Festival is definitely one for every budding Irish filmmaker to submit to, especially with an impartial voting system to get your film chosen. It's really down to your to pull all the fingers out and make sure you're carving out your best film. Just a second, why has it gone dark? Another horror story looms in the corridors off Chapel Lane......

Áine Ní Tighearnaigh talks with Maurice Fitzpatrick, CEO and Creative Director of Creeney Films about his documentary - In the Name of Peace: John Hume in America and the whether we have lost our appetite for Peaceful processes. The documentary was screened in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney in April - May 2018 and has been seen in America and Europe. The Irish Film Festival 2018 stated that "John Hume saw that by harnessing the political influence of the Irish American diaspora in Washington it was possible address the legacy of colonial division in Ireland and to achieve peace. In the Name of Peace: John Hume in America is a compelling feature documentary, narrated by Liam Neeson, with dramatic footage from the conflict in Northern Ireland and stirring accounts by Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter as well as US Congressmen and Senators. This film shows how one man with courage and charisma, inspired by Martin Luther King, mobilized Irish Americans and America to bring an end to years of bloody violence in his homeland. With musical score by Bill Whelan (Riverdance), this beautiful film reminds us of the redemptive powers of politics to overcome hatred and division: in the words of Hume’s fellow Derryman, Seamus Heaney, when, ‘once in a lifetime, the longed-for tidal wave of justice can rise up, and hope and history rhyme’. At a time of great world instability, this is a timely film highlighting creative leadership and the need for steady international co-operation." (Irish Film Festival 2018)
