Episode 232. Janet Williams and Paul Padillo Introduce Maria Ewing (Listeners' Favorites III)

January 9 is already the second anniversary of the death of the iconoclastic (and iconic) Maria Ewing, who died of cancer in her home outside of her native Detroit on January 9, 2022. She was an artist both admired and derided during her lifetime, whose importance since her death has only become more apparent. It so happens that two of my most faithful listeners, Janet Williams and Paul Padillo, chose the episode that I published in her honor as their favorite episode. Paul is a passionate opera advocate who maintains a blog as well as a Facebook page in which he writes with extraordinary eloquence about the musical genre we all adore. Janet is celebrated throughout the world as one of the finest singers of her generation who has gone on to become one of the most important voice teachers in the world today, teaching, with compassion and common sense, a technique grounded in the essentials of bel canto. Their spoken introductions to the episode highlight different aspects of what made Ewing so special. For Paul, he became a lifelong fan after hearing her performance of Blanche de la Force in Poulenc's operatic masterpiece, The Dialogues of the Carmelites. For Janet, it was a shared provenance (both were natives of Detroit) as well as a common mentor, the late David Di Chiera, who founded and ran Michigan Opera Theatre, the company featured both Maria and Janet in some of their first operatic appearances. Maria's passing hit me particularly hard because at the time of her death, I was in the midst of creating a special episode in her honor and had been immersing myself in her fascinating performances, finding myself more and more in awe of her one-of-a-kind artistry. This tribute episode is simply not to be missed. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. Gifted with a beautiful, powerful, classically trained voice, American singer JohnRiesen straddles the line between Opera and Popular music with ease. Originallyinspired by the voices of Josh Groban and Michael Buble, John pursued a career asan operatic tenor where he performed more than 40 leading roles with opera andmusical theater companies throughout the United States including Atlanta Opera,Michigan Opera Theatre, Des Moines Metro Opera, Anchorage Opera, OperaBirmingham, Opera Columbus, Shreveport Opera, Pensacola Opera, IntermountainOpera Bozeman, Tri-Cities Opera, Ithaca Opera, among others. Recently John was seen in his Lincoln Center debut as the voice of Tony in LeonardBernstein's West Side Story Suite as well as the tenor soloist in Stravinsky's LesNoces with the New York City Ballet, and tenor soloist in Rachmaninoff's Vesperswith the NY Oratorio Society. He will be making his Carnegie Hall Debut as TenorSoloist in the Messiah December 2021.Seen most recently in classical crossover collaboration with Emmy-Nominatedpianist-composer and PBS TV star Marina Arsenijevic singing new arrangements ofCrossover standards by Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Tom Jones and many others. This touching, heartfelt song was written 20 years ago by my father, Craig Riesen, for thepassing of his mother (my grandmother). I recall its conception vividly. My father had writtena letter saying many of the things he'd wished to say to her (as we knew she was dying fromcancer), and soon after she passed away. He was heartbroken.I remember him sitting in the living room, with tears rolling down his face as he began to playthis simple, sweet, and longing melody. Soon, words came flowing out with the tune, and thissong was created. At the time, I could not sing. I was still an avid baseball player, but as theyears passed and my vocal talents became apparent the song was passed from my father tome.I get chills to this day, recalling how it felt to say goodbye with song. Needless to say,You're The Best; has been an important part of my life for many years, and I believe that itcan touch other people in the same way that it has touched my heart. We all haveexperienced loss or nostalgia for our loved ones, and this piece pulls at those strings.Originally composed for piano and voice, we have expanded the instrumentation to add soloviolin, electric bass, slight percussion, and synth to fill out the texture. It is a truly specialsong. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Michigan Opera Theatre, the entity behind the 480-ft-tall tower on the site of the 1922 Detroit Opera House, cited changing market conditions for its decision. Bedrock, meanwhile, announced in late January it still plans to create a "tremendously impactful" building, though it will not be the city's tallest. Ground was broken on the site in December 2017. Bedrock has hardly been idle in the Motor City, responsible for projects including the office-to-residential conversion of the David Stott Building, completed in summer 2019, that restored it to its 1929 Art Deco glory.
