From making her Broadway debut as a teenager in Spring Awakening to stepping into the iconic role of Glinda in Wicked, Alexandra Socha has experienced the highs, lows, and unexpected twists of a life in theater. In this candid and insightful conversation, she opens up about her journey, including the surreal experience of joining Spring Awakening right after the Tony wins, the hard lessons of navigating a career beyond that first big break, and what it's like to take the stage in Wicked at a time when the show is having a massive pop culture moment. Alexandra also shares her experience being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, how it reshaped her understanding of herself, and the ways neurodivergence has impacted both her personal life and her work as an actor. We talk about masking, resilience, and why she sees ADHD as both a challenge and a superpower—especially when it comes to problem-solving in rehearsals. Plus, we get into Broadway bootleg nostalgia, the balancing act of being a working parent, and why she believes having a full life outside of theater is essential for any artist. Alexandra Socha made her Broadway debut in Spring Awakening and has since appeared in Brighton Beach Memoirs, Head Over Heels, and Wicked as Glinda. Her TV credits include The Big C, Damages, Royal Pains, Red Oaks, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Evan Handler is beloved by millions for portraying Harry Goldenblatt, divorce-lawyer-turned-husband to Kristin Davis's Charlotte York, on HBO's groundbreaking series, and films, “Sex and the City,” it's current MAX follow-up, “And Just Like That,” as well as Charlie Runkle on Showtime's seven season “Californication.” In addition to authoring two highly acclaimed books, Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors, and It's Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive, Evan has played leading roles in ABC's “It's Like, You Know…,” and NBC's “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” STARZ' “Power,” and made numerous memorable guest appearances on “Lost,” “The West Wing,” “Six Feet Under,” “Necessary Roughness,” and “Friends.” In 2000, Evan played Larry Fine in ABC's TV movie “The Three Stooges,” followed by additional “real life” portrayals of Lloyd Blankfein in HBO's “Too Big to Fail,” Alan Dershowitz in FX's “People vs. OJ Simpson,” and Hal Prince in FX's “Fosse/Verdon,” each of which garnered numerous wide-ranging awards. On the big screen, Evan played a leading role in Ron Howard's “Ransom,” starring Mel Gibson, and featured and leading roles Oliver Stone's “Natural Born Killers,” “Taps,” “The Chosen,” and “Sweet Lorraine.” He's currently visible in David Duchovny's directorial effort, “Reverse the Curse.” Prior to his work in film and television, Evan earned acclaim in seven Broadway productions, all performed between his twenty-first and thirtieth birthdays, and all in spite of losing nearly five years of that span to his fight against a supposedly “incurable” leukemia. During this time Evan starred in Broadway productions of “Six Degrees of Separation,” “I Hate Hamlet,” “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” “Broadway Bound” and “Master Harold...and the boys.” Evan also worked extensively in off-Broadway and regional theater at NY's Public Theater, Manhattan Theater Club, Playwrights Horizons, Seattle Rep, and Steppenwolf, performing early plays by Donald Margulies, Robert Schenkkan, Jez Butterworth, and numerous others. Evan's first book, Time On Fire, details his unlikely recovery from the leukemia diagnosed in the mid-1980s. His second book, It's Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive, describes the twenty-year period post-illness, and Handler's surprisingly circuitous journey toward gratitude, using tales of serial dating, absurd relationships, unexpected depressions, and, ultimately, lasting love and a miracle conception. Laurel Harris and Alexandra Socha, who respectively play Elphaba and Glinda in Broadway's Wicked, visit Google to celebrate 20 years of the hit musical. Wicked looks at what happened in the land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is a young woman, born with emerald-green skin – smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships – until the world decides to call one “Good” and the other “Wicked.” Laurel Harris is thrilled to rejoin Wicked Broadway after just completing 9 months on the Wicked tour. Beginning her Wicked journey 13 years ago, she's proudest of playing Elphaba 10 years ago full-time on tour. In the last double episode of the current season, Jonny rounds off by talking to a bona fide star who's been one almost all his acting life: two time Tony Award winner and, for a generation of movie-goers, the patron saint of being young- Matthew Broderick. Matthew is the star of movies like Ferris Bueller, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Election, You Can Count on Me and The Producers, but his career in the theatre has been immense, not least the five plays of his great mentor and collaborator Neil Simon. The last of these, Plaza Suite, with his wife Sarah Jessica Parker has brought him to London and in his dressing room at the Savoy Theatre, he tells Jonny about the magic of the magic of stage doors, reveals intimate details of his dressing room, the enduring fascination of Joan Collins, doing two shows on his birthday, Ferris Bueller and the pain of growing up, getting the silent treatment from John Hughes, acting with his dad, his triumph as Wall in Midsummer Night's Dream and the tragic story of the big break that nearly broke him. Hello. Thanks for checking in to this repeat performance of a STAGES conversation, recorded with the divine Jacqueline Dark in April 2019.Jacqui's passing is a terrible shock and sadness that we all share. A consummate artist who had so much more to give her audience - across many platforms - Opera, Musical Theatre and Cabaret. Jacqui commanded a stage with an exquisite presence, an extensive skill set and an elegant humanity. Her stage presence was such because of her love of life and all that she encountered in it. Her generosity of spirit and laughter and kindness touched so many people. I was fortunate to know Jacqui for several decades, meeting her in community theatre productions in Ballarat. She excelled in the operetta of the Gilbert & Sullivan cannon, featured annually during Ballarat's Begonia Festival. She turned her focus to straight plays too, giving a delicious 'Nora' in Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs. And I watched mesmerised at every performance of Godspell, as she delivered a passionate ‘By My Side'. She excelled in theatre restaurant and music hall presented at The Victoria Theatre, Sovereign Hill. Cheeky, dedicated, warm, witty and possessed of the most magnificent voice - Jacqui was destined for far bigger stages. And so she did. And so, she conquered them all.Condolences to all of Jacqui's colleagues, family and friends. We have lost a giant talent and a super human being! The Wizard of Oz remarks to the Tin Man on his departure from Oz ………. “And remember, my sentimental friend, that a heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others”.Vale Jacqui Dark.

If the eighties had a face, it would be Matthew Broderick. Arguably the greatest of all teen actors, he made perhaps the signature comedy of the era, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and if that 1986 classic had been the old movie he ever made, he would still be a legend. But Broderick's had a pretty great career; even if recent years, he's taken an extended break from the big screen and primarily focused his energy on the stage. Bursting onto the scene in John Badham's 1983 computer hacking classic WarGames, Broderick made quite a few solid eighties flicks in addition to Ferris Bueller. There's 1985's Ladyhawke, where he's improbably cast as a French thief from the Middle Ages, Biloxi Blues, Project X, and the Civil War classic Glory. The nineties were mostly good to Broderick, with him voicing Simba in The Lion King and starring in The Cable Guy, Godzilla, Inspector Gadget and the cult classic Election. Through it all, Broderick often ventured back to Broadway, winning two Tony's, one from Brighton Beach Memoirs and another for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. On the stage, he had, arguably, the biggest success of his career (other than Ferris Bueller) by co-starring in Mel Brooks' Tony-winning phenomenon, The Producers, opposite Nathan Lane. Since then, he's been among the most bankable Broadway stars, but his screen career took a backseat. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we look at his career highs (Ferris), lows (a tragic episode in London that remains controversial to this day) and future!

Friends who used to be 30 Something, Wingnuts, and Field of Dreamers, lend me your ear (s), and your eyeballs. Emmy-winner Timothy Busfield is a scream! His Burt Lancaster alone is worth the watch. Hysterical, and right on point. Tim's amazing bride, Melissa Gilbert joined us for a sec, she'll be back! But she was a big part of the conversation––how they met, and where––great story. I love how he loves her, and her, him. Their togetherness is epic. We talked how they do it, handle challenges, and resolve them, so quickly. Merging their families - both married for the thrice time… co-parenting and grandparenting, building a home, and a life. Ain't love grand. We talked Tim's early years in Michigan, his mother, her challenges, his father, and his. Tim getting the bug after seeing Burt Lancaster on the big screen, and going full circle co-starring with him in Field of Dreams so many years later––the challenges of that film. First, theatre out the wazoo… Actors Theater of Louisville to Circle Rep… being Matthew Broderick's understudy on Broadway in Brighton Beach Memoirs and never getting on - Trapper John, getting an actors education, Nerds, Stripes, thirtysomething, his first gig with a guy named Snuffy, turns out there are 10 so far, 12 with Melissa's… starring on Broadway for Sorkin, Sports Night, The West Wing, Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip, his two theatre companies intended to serve the young - the guppies did he call them? Being of service a major theme throughout. Turning down hosting SNL, thrice, auditioning for it without knowing, giving up the drink two weeks ago, how and why… his latest, The Cleaning Lady, and more importantly, his next binge with Melissa and their morning flight to Florida. We talked for almost two hours, from LA to Michigan to Upstate NY and the UWS…. and I could have talked all night. Ridiculous fun. Down to earth, open, warm, thoughtful, helpful, funny, loving, fun, fun, fun. Do they come more likable than Tim? You'll have to prove it. Simon's semi-autobiographical comedy-drama — the last in his so called "Eugene Trilogy" — follows on the heels of Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues in exploring the creative evolution of a young man named Eugene — the playwright's stand-in for himself — as an artist and comedic writer. The story is a fictionalized version of the life of Simon about Eugene Morris Jerome of Brooklyn, NY, and his time as an enlisted soldier in Biloxi, Mississippi. Starring Matthew Broderick (who played the role of Eugene in every chapter), the play was an instant hit earning Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Featured Player to Barry Miller (Arnold Epstein.)  At the age of five David  got his first taste of film making at age nine, when he was an extra in Hero at Large, a John Ritter film directed by Martin Davidson. Throughout his teen years, he appeared in Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs and James Lemmo's Heart starring Brad Davis. Dave's recent work includes Emerging Past- a film he produced and in which he appears alongside his childhood idol, Stephen (Fright Night) Geoffreys, in a very funny scene. Mr. Hush, which he wrote, produced, and directed, has become a cult classic. It stars Brad Loree (Michael Myers in Halloween: Resurrection), Stephen Geoffreys (Fright Night, 976-EVIL), and Steve Dash (Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Part 2). Mr. Hush enjoyed a limited, US national theatrical run in NYC, LA, San Francisco, Atlanta, Dallas, northeastern PA, and Pittsburgh. It was released nationally on DVD and Blu-ray on August 7, 2012 and spent 6 weeks on Redbox's genre top 10 list. In 2012, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences requested a copy of the Mr. Hush script to be placed in the permanent core collection of the Margaret Herrick Library to be preserved forever. In 2014, Dave started a podcast/radio show titled The End of the Night. In his first 10 episodes, guests included Corey Feldman, Doug Bradley, David Naughton, Brian O'Halloran, Harrison Page, Tiffany Shepis, Fred "the Hammer" Williamson, G. Tom Mac, and Tony Moran, just to name a few. In November of 2015, Dave released his film Middle Village. Its theatrical debut was at the historic Cinemart Theater in Queens, New York. It has garnered Laurels from the Forwardian Film Festival, and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. It was featured on whatchareading.com's list of the best films of 2015. The film features his dear friend, Brian O'Halloran (Clerks 1 & 2, Mallrats), Ray Abruzzo (Mad Men, Sopranos), Scott Schiaffo (Clerks) and WWE Superstar Gene Snisky. .

The family ‘business’ continues with grand-children beginning to make their mark in performance.Between musicals, Jill appeared in a number of Phillip Street Theatre revues, establishing herself as a versatile talent. Musicals continued to be her speciality where she would virtually steal the show, receiving unanimous acclaim from the critics and public alike. Special Episode #12: In anticipation of the upcoming release of the cast recording of Encores Off Center's production of God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater starring Santino Fontana, I bring you a podcast  episode featuring Santino himself! I had the privilege of playing a small role in the show, so I got to watch Santino at work, and he is truly a brilliant artist. You'll hear me acknowledge him in this episode, and although it sounds like I'm praising a mere ability to memorize quickly (one of my pet peeve compliments), what I meant and didn't quite articulate was that he seemed to arrive at a full and complete performance, i.e. emotional depth, sense of humor, facility with the language and music, almost immediately with no ostensible effort. It was pretty amazing. And for the record, the name of the complicated song he nailed in the cast recording is “A Firestorm Consuming Indianapolis.”Rosewater aside, Santino has graced many a Broadway production, including Billy Elliot, Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Importance of Being Earnest, Cinderella, and Act One. Additionally, he is probably best known for his performance as Greg in the CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and as the voice of Prince Hans in Disney's blockbuster film Frozen. But for me, first and foremost, he'll always be Aaron from the web series Submissions Only.In this episode, Santino sings “At Sea,” a song from the abandoned show Hashi, a piece on which I collaborated with Beth Blatt. Loosely based on the Pollyanna story, the young, recently orphaned boy Hashi has been sent to live with his Aunt Barb, a single, hardened New York City working woman. In this song, Barb's ex-boyfriend and upstairs neighbor Ben is back on a break from the cruiseline doctor job he accepted directly after their breakup. In a conversation with Hashi, Ben reflects on his choices over the past few years. (FYI, the sheet music and piano accompaniment track for "At Sea" have just been added to my online music store.)As for Santino, he is tireless! Here's what he has coming up:On July 21 and 22, he'll be performing in a concert with Laura Osnes and Ted Sperling in ChicagoOn July 28 he'll be doing a concert version of The Music Man with his wife, Jessica, in the PoconosFrom August 12-20, he'll be appearing on the Broadway on the Rhine River Playbill CruiseAlso look out for him in some upcoming episodes of Mozart in the Jungle, returning to play yet another title role, Mozart himself! This episode was recorded on April 20, 2017.

Neil Simon’s play, “Lost in Yonkers” uses the playwright’s sharp humor to underscore a turbulent moment in the life of one American family. Douglas Okey has this review of a production at Corn Stock Theatre, for Peoria Public Radio and the Live Theatre League. Opinions expressed are those of the reviewer, not those of Peoria Public Radio or the Live Theatre League. Neil Simon today is the theatrical equivalent of comfort food. We turn to him when we need something familiar and reassuring. He is perhaps the most critically adored of the more “popular” American playwrights. Simon even captured the Pulitzer Prize for “Lost in Yonkers,” currently on stage at Corn Stock Theatre under the capable direction of Amy Williams. As in Simon’s earlier play “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” “Lost in Yonkers” takes the point of view of a young Jewish boy from Brooklyn in the run-up to World War II, and reflects the upheaval of that era: Two sons of a recently widowed father must be placed with their imposing

William Ragsdale, Gary Hawkins on FX's new series, "Justified," will be making an appearance on BuzzWorthy Radio! After attending Hendrix College where he appeared in plays with Sling Blade actress and fellow Arkansan Natalie Canerday, he gained attention as the young hero of Fright Night and Fright Night II, a series of humorous vampire films co-starring Roddy McDowall. He also performed in theatre productions of Neil Simon plays Biloxi Blues[3] and Brighton Beach Memoirs. Ragsdale has had a sporadic career on prime-time television. He starred for three years in the Fox Network sitcom Herman's Head. He had a brief recurring role in Judging Amy as the obnoxious son of Richard Crenna's character. He played a TV producer on Grosse Pointe, which lasted one season. He was cast in the pilot for Charmed, but turned down the series to star in the short-lived sitcom Brother's Keeper. He appeared on Ellen as a boyfriend of the character Ellen Morgan (Ellen DeGeneres), before Morgan (and DeGeneres herself) came out of "the closet" as a lesbian. He played bit roles in numerous movies and television series, including a four-episode stint on Less Than Perfect. Oddly enough, he lost movie roles in both Glory and Biloxi Blues to Matthew Broderick, but did work with Broderick in the 2009 film Wonderful World.

Jessica Hecht, now on Broadway as Eddie Carbone's long-suffering but cleared-eyed wife Beatrice in the Broadway revival of "A View From The Bridge", talks about her role in the play's tragic love triangle and why her preparation for this performance was so different than her usual practice. She also discusses how she began studying at Connecticut College, only to have the famed actor Morris Carnovsky send her off to New York to study at New York University; her earliest roles, including an appearance in "Hamlet" at Hartford Stage, near her hometown of Bloomfield CT, as a silent lady-in-waiting to Pamela Payton-Wright as Gertrude; her Broadway debut in "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" where, after being raised in an observant Jewish home, she appeared as part of a Southern family disconnected from their Jewish roots; how she handled portraying a character alternating between dawning love and heart-rending tragedy in the non-linear "Stop Kiss"; working on "After The Fall" at the Roundabout with Arthur Miller and her interaction with the legendary playwright; playing in Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" with Denzel Washington -- and how that yielded the greatest entrance ovation she's ever experienced; the joy and pain of opening in "Brighton Beach Memoirs" but never being able to perform for an audience in the prematurely closed "Broadway Bound"; and why she's drawn back to the Williamstown Theatre Festival year after year. Original air date - March 17, 2010.

Producer Emanuel Azenberg talks about the upcoming repertory production of "Brighton Beach Memoirs" and "Broadway Bound", including the choice of David Cromer as director, whether the plays are being revised for the tandem run, and why he thinks they'll make audiences think of these plays -- and Neil Simon himself -- in a whole new way. He also discusses how he began his career as part of a group of softball and poker playing buddies that included Robert Redford, James and William Goldman, and on occasion Carl Reiner; how he came to be Neil Simon's exclusive producer on every play since 1972's "The Sunshine Boys"; how he's handled the challenge of dealing with shows that haven't succeeded, including "Fools", "Division Street" and "Einstein and the Polar Bear"; why he has dared to produce the supposedly cursed "Scottish Play" on Broadway not just once, but twice; what he sought to impart to his students at Yale and later Duke University about theatre over some 25 years and how he feels that students have changed over that time; shows he's done for love and shows he's done for money; what has drawn him to be involved in the upcoming revival of "Ragtime"; and why he thinks the much-admired "Side Show" didn't succeed on Broadway, and possibly never will. Original air date - October 19, 2009.
