Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 7 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. This week we have a super-sized episode of Catalyst, with a whopping three interviews! Each of our guests this week takes us on a creative journey, one which can be full of unexpected turns, but always gets us to the right destination. To kick us off, Jeremy Scheidt speaks with Tanwarin Sukkhapisit, a Thai filmmaker and Thailand's first transgender member of parliament. Sukkhapisit who has held a multitude of different jobs within the film industry including being a screenwriter, actor, producer, and director for various television shows, shorts, and feature-length films, and whose most recent directorial work is a TV series titled The War Of Flowers, discusses with Scheidt the realities and challenges of working in the industry. They also tackle what it is like to work in a creative environment within a region that has very specific censorship laws, and how that effects your work, and you as a person. The second segment of our show this week features an interview with Courtney Donely the Director of Special Events at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, by Sierra Detar. Originally a Women's Studies major, Donely has an intriguing career journey, that she discusses at length with Detar, including her start with the Make a Wish Foundation, how she found running her own business can be isolating at times, and how everything she has learned along the way has contributed to her finding her right fit in an organization and a position. In our final segment this week Kaitlyn Kenyon sits down with Madi Atkins, the founder of a creative agency in New York called Madness Studio. A fashion photographer, Atkins launched the studio, as a creative production studio that creates video/photo campaigns, and digital marketing campaigns for clients in the fashion and beauty industries. Atkins opens up to Kenyon about how she got her start and the perks and drawbacks of working in such a fast paced creative industry.

Sara Broadhead is the Head Electrician for Segerstrom Hall at Segerstrom Center for the Arts (when not furloughed because of COVID) and has been in the facility for the last 10 years. Prior to having a "house gig" she did corporate and industrial event design traveling across the US with Brite Ideas. She has an MFA in Lighting Design from UC Irvine and Bachelors in Theatrical Design and Accounting from Western Michigan University. She loves living in Southern California and adores the friend family that she has built while missing her family and friends in Michigan. I’m sharing the top five reasons to love Costa Mesa. I’m excited to share the five main reasons I love Costa Mesa, California, one of the many areas I service here in Orange County. It has much more than wonderful weather and the yearly Orange County Fair (though those are great too). 1. City of the Arts. Costa Mesa is known as the “City of the Arts.” The Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts not only includes a 3,000 person opera-style hall for Broadway musicals, but also a 2,000-person concert hall that brings shows and music to the city. It’s an excellent venue to enjoy the very best of Costa Mesa musical arts. 2. Conveniently located. The city has the 405 freeway, 55 freeway, and the 73 toll road. Unlike New York, San Francisco, and London, here, we need a car to get around. However, no matter where you’re trying to go, Costa Mesa has convenient roads to get you there. 3. Close to all the beaches. As a kid, the beach was too far away from where I lived, but in Costa Mesa, no matter where you are, you’re about five miles away from a beach. If you’re looking for sand and waves, they have beautiful Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. 4. The South Coast Plaza. This is the largest shopping mall on the West Coast. Originally, it began as a lima bean field. The first department stores were Robinsons-May and Bullock’s. Every year, 24 million people shop and dine in the plaza. It’s a fantastic place for retail therapy! 5. Amazing restaurants and bars. “Mesa” means “table” in Spanish. You could eat at a different restaurant every day of the year and still not have tried everything. There are also plenty of gyms and yoga studios to burn off the delicious calories. I would love to hear the reasons you love Costa Mesa and what some of your favorite places are. Please comment below! If you’re considering moving to this exceptional city, call or email us; we love helping people find their place here. Also, contact us if you have any questions about real estate. We would be happy to help you.

On this special mini episode of West of Broadway, Will and Lara talk with Noah Weisberg who is currently staring as Willy Wonka in the National Tour of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Karen Mason is a star of on-and-off Broadway, a recording artist and cabaret performer of renown, and currently can be seen as Madame Giry in the touring production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Love Never Dies"...the sequel to "The Phantom of the Opera." Plus we're joined by guest Lara Scott who has seen the show and shares her thoughts. "Love Never Dies" is currently at the Pantages theater in Los Angeles (through April 22, 2018) and moves to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa (April 24-May 5) and will continue touring the country; get more info and tickets here and learn more about Karen and her latest collection of music "It's About Time" at karenmason.com

BEST OF 2017 Favorite cities: Vienna, Austria - This was a no brainer for Tamara as her favorite city for 2017. It was so clean and elegant and had great architecture, museums and food. Anaheim, California - Kim chose this city in California. Until recently she has always thought of Anaheim as Disneyland. This year she explored the downtown area and experienced its very southern California feel. Favorite city hotels: Avenue of the Arts - Kim stayed at this hotel in Costa Mesa, California. This hotel sits right across the Segerstrom Center that is the big performing arts center in Costa Mesa. The decor of the hotel room had a very modern feel and had a cute restaurant on site that had great lighting and seating for breakfast. Palais Hansen Kempinski - This hotel Tamara stayed at was in Vienna, Austria. Her family had a fabulous experience. Staying at this hotel was the full 5 star service, where they were greeted by name when entering and leaving. The employees were also so helpful with any information that was needed. The breakfast buffet was widespread and the nicest experience. Favorite beach hotels: Disney Aulani - Was Kim’s favorite beach hotel mostly in part due to the the location of the hotel and the surrounding beaches. Eden Roc Cap Cana - Tamara’s favorite hotel was one that she stayed at with her husband in the Dominican Republic. This was a great quiet getaway that can only be described as heaven. Favorite outside the city hotels: Basin Harbor Club Hotel - Is a hotel next to Lake Champlain in Vermont. This hotel is perfect for big family vacations, with different cabins along the lake. Mar Vista Cottages at Anchor Bay - This location is set off of the coast Highway 1 and is in Northern California. The Cottages are owned by a sweet couple that keeps them well kept and clean. They have live chickens so if you set out a basket by around 5pm, they would collect eggs for you to have in the morning as well as a garden with fresh herbs. Favorite history tours: The Jewish history tour Tamara and her family took in Budapest was her favorite tour experience starting with their great tour guide that shared some personal stories and it was an emotional journey. Kim loved her experience at the Cannery Row in Monterey, California, where she learned about the bridges that go over the road that used to be used for sending fish into the warehouses for canning. Favorite food tours: Walk Eat Nashville - Was Tamara’s favorite food tour this year out of the five that she has been on. The tour had a great variety. Theo Chocolate - Was Kim’s favorite food tour this year that is in Seattle, WA. This tour teaches you the history of Theo chocolate and the story behind it. Favorite meal: Kim’s favorite meal was at The C Restaurant and Bar which is located on Cannery Row in Monterey, CA. The whole experience from the service to the food quality and the view were fantastic. Tamara’s favorite meal was at The Bazaar by Jose Andres which is located by South Beach Miami, Florida. This was one of the best food experience she has had and it was very inventive and tasted fabulous. Favorite outdoor adventures: Tamara’s family loved the experience they had hiking in Copper Mountain in Colorado. Kim’s favorite trip was the Oars Adventure she took for a camping and water rafting experience. Out of the ordinary experiences: Kim loved the experiences she had at the Disney Aulani KA WA’A luau. Though this was very Disney, it still had the history and tradition that was a fun little experience. Tamara loved the experience of the Peabody Memphis Hotel where her daughter Hannah got to be the Honorary Duck Master. This hotel has ducks that live on the roof that every morning are led down the elevator and to the fountain where they stay during the day, and then at night they are led back up to the roof. Theme park experience: The Flight of Passage at Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida. This was the best ride that Tamara and her family have been on. It was worth the wait in line. Kim likes that Disneyland is starting a Max pass system instead of just Fast Pass. Favorite mother-daughter trips: Tamara and Hannah loved their civil rights road trip they took this year. Kim and Lizzy loved their Southern California trip where Lizzy got to experience some surf lessons. Then Kim and Amelia loved their trip to Estes Park Colorado where they got to explore the Rocky Mountain National Park there.
