On February 1st of 2022, I reported to a local hospital at 5:15AM for surgery to remove a tumor from my brain. The surgery took 10 hours. The two surgeons - a neurologist and an inner ear specialist worked together to remove the growing obstruction in my brain. The tumor was not cancer it is something known by multiple names - but was referred to as an acoustic neuroma or a vestibular schwannoma. After experiencing issues of sudden dizziness and a strange feeling of being off-balance as well as I thought that I had swimmer's ear... I was having a hard time hearing in my right ear, and it felt like when you have been swimming, and you get water in your ear - I finally went to see a doctor. This led to a couple of MRIs and numerous doctor visits with specialists and the diagnosis of a tumor. When I first looked at the tumor in an MRI, it looked like a small marble, 6 months later on a new MRI it looked like a small mushroom. The tumor was growing on the nerve that controls hearing and balance on my right side. The fear was that it would eventually attach itself to the nerve that controls the right side of my face which would cause major issues. The surgeons decided that the best path was to remove the tumor and not use radiation. I was told that I would most probably lose all hearing in my right ear they were correct. Images of an Idea Lost is the true storyof Lynda and David’s twenty-five year relationship. The passion and the depth of their bondwas born in the threshold of a dream, in the bright sunshine of that July day. But it is a story that is veiled in a mystery, for it would become a tragedythat would have made the ancient Greeks cry. Welcome to Part 11 of a special series: "Leading Schools in a Time of Crisis." In these conversations, we will probe how educators are helping their schools and communities pivot due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So, how do educators effectively lead change during a crisis? For educational service agency heads Dr. Jeff Hawkins and Steve Miletto, it's ultimately about helping schools answer the question: “What do we do next year?”

David Miletto completes his talk with me today as we learn more about his art, the help he is seeking and a little more about Lynda. This is episode 280 of Teaching Learning Leading K12. This is the conclusion of my interview with David Miletto. Over the four episodes he talked about his Italian heritage, shared family stories, recalled thoughts about growing up in and around Chicago, related his memories of coming of age from the late 1950's through the early 1970's and explained his ideas about his works of art. I hope that you see an opportunity not to just listen to someone share their life experiences but also think about how students could use interviews as such to help them better understand the past. David recently published his story about his 25 year relationship with Lynda that you heard him mention during the interviews. His book is called "Images of an Idea Lost." Perchè è così importante eseguire il giusto schema motorio durante un esercizio? Perchè è così importante fare il movimento correto? Scopriamolo...
David Miletto was a child in the '50s, a teenager in the 60's and in his twenties in the 1970's. He lived through some amazing years in the United States and he shares his thoughts about many different topics. In this episode, David shares some stories from his college days, recalls his thoughts about some journeys he took with friends, and he starts to introduce us to a wonderful relationship that begins to develop. At the end of the show, David talks about the help that he is in need of to try to finish his latest work of art. Maybe you might be able to help him? Remember that this is episode 3. It would be awesome if you hadn't completed episodes 1 & 2 yet that you go back and listen to the beginning of this 4 part series. So check out Episodes 269 & 271, if you haven't listened to the first two parts of the four-part interview. By the way, David just released his e-book - Images of an Idea Lost(Apple Books) As a classroom teacher, my hope is that you will be able to use some of his comments about life in the past as a way of getting your students to create a better understanding of the importance of asking questions of those who were there: in this case, Chicagoland area in the 50s and 60s…(by the way the journey will also take us to Texas, Florida, maybe Las Vegas, and Italy...even Wisconsin). Too often textbooks leave out the emotions and the true feelings of the people of the era. What do you think? I am sure that you could use this to engage your students in discussions about the past. Primary sources of information provide us opportunities to learn without the bias of the editors. This multi-part series provides an awesome learning opportunity for the students in your classes. David Miletto is an artist. He was a child in the 50s, a teenager in the 60s, and in the late 60s- early 70s a college student. This is episode 271 of Teaching Learning Leading K12 which is part 2 of a multi-part series of interviews with David. We talk about being an Italian American, living in the era, Chicago, family stories and life in general. At the end of each episode, David describes a project he is working on and the help that he is seeking to make it come alive. He has always been one of my favorite uncles. I think you will see why. David has an incredible sense of humor. He also is an amazing cook who makes some of the most amazing dishes! As a classroom teacher, my hope is that you will be able to use some of his comments about life in the past as a way of getting your students to create a better understanding of the importance of asking questions of those who were there: in this case, Chicagoland area in the 50s and 60s…(by the way the journey will also take us to Texas, Florida, maybe Las Vegas, and Italy...even Wisconsin). David Miletto is an artist. He has an amazing talent for bringing ideas to life. This is episode 269 of Teaching Learning Leading K12 and the first part of a multi-part interview with David as we talk about Italian heritage, family stories, Chicago, life in the 50's-60's-70's, and art. He also is one of my favorite uncles. He has an incredible sense of humor. He is an amazing cook who makes his own pasta and I swear I can sense when he is cooking...awesome aromas! And I always remember him having an interesting comment or two that would make me think…“Like in the 80s when he asked me which of my music groups I think will still be relevant in 20 years.” Or him practicing his spoken Italian and talking about the family history...You have never lived until you have experienced him driving through the toll booths of Chicago! He also is an avid baseball and Whitesox fan… This interview is focused on David as a primary source of information. He lived through some amazing aspects of our country. This will be a multipart show. In the first episode, we will share some family history and then talk about being a child in the 50s and early 60s. As a classroom teacher, my hope is that you will be able to use some of his thoughts and comments about life in the past as a way of getting your students to hear the thoughts of someone who was there...Chicagoland area in the 50s and 60s…(by the way the journey will also take us to Texas, Florida, maybe Las Vegas, and Italy...even Wisconsin)...part two and three will bring us through the turbulent teenage years and the late 60s, and then into some events in later years of his life. Remember David is an artist and at the end of each episode, we will journey into some of his work and a special request for assistance with a project that he is trying to take to the next level and complete.

3 Scary (Ok, not really scary) Moments for a Teacher There are times when a classroom teacher has to address some issues or take care of a situation that can really feel scary sometimes. Today, I'm sharing three of these types of moments and my thoughts about dealing with them. 1. It's Monday morning and the principal or your evaluator steps into your room to observe you teach. 2. A student challenges your authority. 3. You have to call a parent. Today, I share some thoughts to help. Thanks for listening. Taking attendance may seem like a mundane topic, but it is a requirement that must be completed else you might discover that the kids will get caught up in issues as I mentioned in episode 212. If you develop a good procedure for taking attendance the process will help you (the classroom teacher) learn the names of the kids faster which pays off in behavior management and developing relationships with the kids. So, one procedure that helps ...is extremely old school, but it still works. It's called the seating chart. It can help you save time. Here are my three thoughts about taking attendance: 1. Use a seating chart 2. Use a sheet protector 3. Get it done I didn't have my own classroom for a bunch of years and had to travel from classroom to classroom. I had a cart and put all of my stuff in it. A veteran teacher taught me how to use this procedure to save time. He was so right and you will see that it will work for you, too. Thanks for listening today. Go here for some extra pictures: Taking Attendance Using a Seating Chart Episode 212 - Classroom Attendance: It's Important to Pay Attention and Follow-up Length - 21:33
The first day of class is almost here. Are you ready? Have you actually planned for that first day? Oh, I know...lots of peers say that they have but they really have just gone through the motions. I love the first day of class because you only get that one first day. Here are my 5 Ideas about Getting Ready for the First Day of Class 1. Is your classroom looking good? 2. Have you created the procedures (How you operate your class.) that the kids need to know on the first day of class? 3. Have you created engaging instructional plans for the first day that make the kids want to come back? 4. Have you taken time to reach out to the kids and parents to say hi before school begins? 5. Have you planned to be you? Have fun on that first day of class. You only get one. Thanks for listening.
