We kennen haar natuurlijk al langer als actrice in theater, tv-series en films, maar sinds ze samen met haar man Felix Van Groeningen de veelbekroonde langspeelfilm De acht bergen maakte, staat ze ook nadrukkelijk op de kaart als regisseur. Én er is muziek, want ze werkt intussen ook nog eens volop aan een plaat. Een rijk parcours, en een leven dat ze vastberaden zoekend aflegt, met vele reizen op haar eentje, tot zelfs diep in het Amazonewoud. En áltijd met alle zintuigen open, zeker sinds die ene cruciale les die ze in de lagere school kreeg van haar leraar Marc De Bel.

En esta ocasión te comparto mis opiniones a partir de dos libros: "My beautiful boy: Siempre serás mi hijo", una memoria escrita por David Sheff e "Historia de Shuggie Bain", una novela de ficción a partir de las experiencias de Douglas Stuart; ambos enfocados al tema de las adicciones, y cuya lectura motivó esta reflexión acerca del amor y la codependencia emocional. En este episodio trato de no hacer spoilers para el contenido de los libros, por si tú estás interesado en leerlos. De igual forma, te recomiendo ampliamente la película adaptación de "My beautiful boy", que lleva el mismo nombre y es protagonizada por Steve Carell y Timothée Chalamet, estrenada en 2008 y dirigida por Felix Van Groeningen.

Florent partage avec nous son parcours, son expérience dans le domaine et nous parle des spécificités de son métier, qui nécessite une grande maîtrise technique et artistique. Eh oui, il ne suffit pas de savoir bidouiller 2/3 trucs sur des logiciels aux noms obscurs; quand on fait de la création 3D, il faut une bonne dose d'imagination, de flexibilité, et savoir être touche à tout : parce qu'on peut porter plein de casquettes sur un seul et même projet.Je vous préviens quand même, on évoque des termes un peu techniques pour quand on ne connaît pas du tout le vocabulaire de ce milieu; on a essayé d'expliquer le plus possible certains termes récurrents au fil de la conversation, et j'espère que les moins aguerris d'entre nous sur ces vastes sujets trouveront le maximum de réponses à leurs questions !

Beautiful Boy is the latest brick in Amazon Studios' foundation of establishing itself as the new Miramax - the home of middlebrow American indies featuring sad white people going about their lives. Sometimes they're great, like Jim Jarmusch's Paterson; other times, well, it's Woody Allen's latest thing or Life Itself. Beautiful Boy is closer to the Paterson end of the spectrum, a handsomely-made actors' showcase telling the real-life story of David (Steve Carell) and Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet), a father and son dealing with the latter's addiction to hard drugs, including crystal meth.  Director Felix van Groeningen (Broken Circle Breakdown) presents a handsomely tragic look at drug addiction, Nic's addiction coming in cycles of hope and despair while David tries desperately to save his son, before realizing that maybe that's not his job. While van Groeningen's direction is intriguing, structuring the film around elliptical flashbacks detailing the moments that punctuate Nic's relationship to drugs, the real meat and potatoes is seeing Carell and Chalamet's wounded, authentic performances. Carell's a master at this kind of anguished, darkly comic pathos by now - hell, he's about to do it again in Welcome to Marwen - but Chalamet continues to be one of cinema's greatest new discoveries. As Nic, he displays the kind of deeply felt pain and adolescent ennui of James Dean in his prime, his yearning eyes and squirming vulnerability as he runs through cycles of dependency and hope about drugs. It's not a perfect film by any means, and it certainly wastes fine actresses in Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan, but as a heartfelt two-hander about addiction, it's one to watch. I actually got the chance to sit down with van Groeningen around the time of opening night for a roundtable discussion with fellow critics Leo Brady of AMovieGuy.com and Lee Shoquist of ChicagoFilm.com - together, we talked about everything from adapting a book from two memoirs and working with such esteemed actors at the top of their game. TravCast is the Writer's Podcast from the Traverse, Scotland’s New Writing Theatre. Associate Director, Emma Callander, interviews well known playwrights whose work features in the year round programme at the Traverse. In this episode, Emma speaks to Valentijn Dhaenens. After obtaining a Master’s Degree in Dramatic Arts at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp, Valentijn co-founded his own theatre company, SKaGeN. From 2006, the company has been rewarded with structural subsidisation from the Flemish / Belgian Government for their work as one of the leading modern theatre groups in Belgium and Holland. Outside SKaGeN he has worked extensively as an actor in over 30 productions for Belgium’s major companies such as NT Gent, Kaaitheater Brussels and Ontroerend Goed. His international breakthrough came with his own written and directed solo-show BigMoutH that is touring extensively to major festivals and venues worldwide. A follow up called SmallWaR was presented at the Traverse Theatre as part of its Edinburgh Festival 2014 programme. Aside from his theatre work, Valentijn is a sought-after narrator for documentaries such as The boy is gone by Christophe Bohn. Occasionally he is a guest lecturer at Belgian and Dutch theatre schools. To a broader audience, Valentijn is best known for his acting in several TV shows and films, most notably for his lead-role in De helaasheid der dingen / The Misfortunates by Felix Van Groeningen which won numerous prizes worldwide such as the Prix Art et Essai at the Cannes Film Festival 2009.
