BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb to Consider Pause on Licensing Health Spas Cobb County officials are proposing a six-month moratorium on licensing health spas due to concerns over code violations, prostitution, and human trafficking activities reported at local massage parlors. The county's Community Development Department has highlighted evasion of law enforcement by illicit spa establishments as a significant issue. The moratorium aims to halt new licenses while regulations are tightened to address these issues. Recent incidents, such as a sexual assault allegation at a massage parlor, have underscored the need for stricter oversight. Similar measures have been implemented in neighboring cities like Roswell to combat human trafficking. The county hopes to finalize new regulations by November to better manage this industry. STORY 2: Cobb Elections Board Finalizes Runoff Results The Cobb Board of Elections unanimously certified results from the June 18 runoff, confirming turnout of 2.49% with 5,750 votes cast out of 231,011 eligible voters across two races. Dr. Jaha Howard won the Democratic runoff for Cobb Board of Commissioners District 2 with 73.07% of the vote, advancing to face Republican Pamela Reardon in November. In the Democratic runoff for Congressional District 14, retired U.S. Army Brigadier Gen. Shawn Harris secured 69% of the vote, setting up a general election contest against incumbent U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. STORY 3: Man Convicted for Cold Case Murder of Father Shot for $50 Dontavian Jones, 22, has been found guilty for the 2016 murder of Dewenzell Spence, 41, in Cobb County. STORY 5: Could AI dramatically improve how quickly we diagnose cancer? British scientists have developed a prototype using machine learning to diagnose cancer with over 98% accuracy, identifying 13 types including breast, liver, lung, and prostate cancer. The technology analyzes DNA methylation patterns, which can indicate cancerous changes early on. These patterns, caused by environmental factors altering DNA bases, are crucial for distinguishing cancerous tissue from healthy samples. Published in Biology Methods & Protocols, the study's AI model is trained to interpret these patterns, potentially revolutionizing early cancer detection. Researchers emphasize the need for further diverse biopsy testing to refine the model for clinical use, aiming to enhance patient outcomes by enabling earlier treatment interventions. We had a great conversation with country artist Jennifer Hart .We talked about many things from family, her new album "1992". music, sacrifices, she told some great stories to a whole lot more!Originally from Gilbert, Arizona, Jennifer Hart (formerly known as Jennifer Smestad) is a Country singer-songwriter who now calls Music City home. Moving to Nashville in 2016, with nothing but a Bible and clear vision, Hart has carved her own unique path and recently signed to RECORDS Nashville as her viral “Half The Man” entered the TOP 10 US iTunes Sales Chart, while continuing to garner millions of streams on DSPs and hundreds-of-thousand uses on TikTok resulting in well over 20 million views. After finding moderate streaming success with “Find Me Here,” about her sister's miscarriage, Jennifer said “it was a huge passion project for me and one of the most meaningful songs to me.” This fine-tuned her focus to include songs that carry personal meaning. She followed up with “Half The Man,” about her Father in February 2020. Upon the success of “Half The Man,” Hart immediately started hearing from record labels, ultimately finding a home with Barry Weis's RECORDS. City Limits Phoenix stated, “Hart has emerged as one of Nashville's most impressive young artists. She's smart and thoughtful, with a playful, sassy side that quickly endears her to audiences.” She has been singing as long as anyone can remember and began writing her own songs at the age of 10; however, she first entered the public spotlight through the Miss America Organization in which she was crowned Miss Arizona 2013 and advanced to the Miss America Competition. It was this opportunity that allowed her the platform to share her story of overcoming Tourette Syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Social Anxiety. She has been featured on Us Weekly, The Today Show, Daily Mail and other major international networks, but most importantly she has had the chance to touch the lives of so many others who have struggled with the same or similar challenges. Never afraid of hard work, Hart believes she needs to continually push to better herself and this shows in her music. “Every time I push myself to do the very thing that scares me, I feel empowered and even more inspired to conquer all of my other fears.” The desire to work hard, push herself and reach people promises a bright future for Jennifer and her upcoming music.

You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Earle Audet was an American football offensive tackle in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins, as well as the Los Angeles Dons of the All-America Football Conference. He played college football at the University of Southern California, and was drafted in the third round of the 1944 NFL Draft. Now, for our feature story: Miss North America 2021 may not be showing off her shoes this Labor Day when the official Miss America Organization holds its iconic "Show Us Your Shoes Parade" in Mystic for the first time ever, but she is stepping up to shine a light on the ever-changing image of beauty pageants in the country. Kaitlyn Benson, 21, of Hope Valley, the reigning Miss North America 2021 said: "There are many different pageants out there. I am not affiliated with the Miss America organization but I did fall in love with pageantry after my first orientation." Benson, who also served as Miss Ocean State 2019, said she initially had a different opinion about beauty pageants and imagined them to be all "glitz and glamor" like the reality television series, "Toddlers and Tiaras." But as she learned more about the opportunities and philosophies of various contests and learned the history of pageantry, she changed her mind. According to PBS, the winner of the first "Inter-City Beauty Contest" in 1921 was crowned "Miss America" and won a first place prize of $100. Later, "The national executive director, Lenora Slaughter, shaped the modern pageant by adding features such as state competitions, the scholarship program, and a judging category based on personal interviews." In the 1990s the pageant was reformed into the Miss America Organization, a not-for-profit corporation comprising three distinct divisions: the traditional Miss America Pageant, the scholarship fund, and a Miss America foundation. Meanwhile, 51 women will be following their pageantry dreams to Mystic this Labor Day when they participate in the "Show Us Your Shoes" Parade — part of the official Miss America 100th Anniversary Celebration — and vie for the title of "Miss America" from the group that started pageantry in the United States. The parade will kickoff on Clara Drive in Mystic at 10 a.m. on Sept. 6 and will feature Miss America hopefuls from every state in the country and Washington, D.C., along with a number of "Forever Miss Americas" who will show off "elaborate parade costumes and decorated shoes to showcase their home states". After Monday's parade, Miss America competitors will visit Ocean Beach Park in New London, the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, Buttonwood Farm in Griswold and the Slater Museum at Norwich Free Academy. The event is part of three-year partnership between Mohegan Sun — which hosted the 2020 Miss America Competition — and the Miss America Organization, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The next Miss America will be chosen in December at Mohegan Sun. Before going on to represent the state in the 100th Miss America Competition, Leah going back “On The Record,” joining host Sarina Fazan and teenager Mia Dill at the Red House Streaming studios, to talk about why it's so important for girls to dream big and how no goal is out of reach.

When the Miss America Competition gets underway on September 11, our eyes will be on Miss New Hampshire Caroline Carter. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 10, her first passions were basketball and theater. Pageants came along later and she found great success, becoming Miss America Outstanding Teen New Hampshire in 2014 and then Miss New Hampshire 2016 in May. Caroline talks to Stacey about wearing her diabetes tech (pump and cgm) during pageants and how she prepares for the long hours and constant travel. She talks about her friendships with Miss America 1999 Nicole Johnson and Miss Idaho 2015 Sierra Sandison, both of whom have T1D.
