Callie Cox is currently serving as Miss Missouri 2021. She is a senior at the University of Missouri where she's applying the nearly $20,000 in scholarships she's earned to finish her degree in communication and psychology. Her hope? To further her mission of creating a more inclusive culture for people of all abilities!
KAT Country Mornings with Erin and Chris chat with Callie Cox, our current Miss Missouri, and her special partnership with MU Health Care's Children's Hospital.
It all begins with a local preliminary - and the decision to try. Embarking on her fifth year of competing at Miss Missouri, she has been forever changed, shaped, and impacted by the Miss America Organization. As the current Miss North Kansas City, Holli represent the Kansas City metro, as well as Mid-Missouri and her hometown of Eldon/Russellville/Olean. Being a Missouri girl, born and raised, is an important part of who she is. Her social impact initiative is #HungryForChange.Through the Miss America Organization, Holly has earned over $18,000 (and counting!) in scholarship dollars to fund her undergraduate and graduate education. Because of scholarships, she graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Science and Agricultural Journalism debt-free in 2020, and is pursuing her MBA program at Washington University in St. Louis. As one of triplets, she knew the only way to afford college was through scholarships and she is grateful to the many community and civic organizations that provided those opportunities to her. "As time has passed, I've learned to make my process sustainable while always being ready for, and open to, new ways of doing things. Yes, I have stumbled. I have stuttered. I have hesitated. I have fallen down the stairs on the Miss Missouri stage, while in a swimsuit. I have forgotten the words to a song with an audience staring at me in disbelief and I've been the butt of jokes on the local news channel. I have mentally and emotionally struggled, and I have literally died. Overtime I have created the story that I was supposed to experience every single one of those moments. “Life is simple. Everything happens for you, not to you. Everything happens at exactly the right moment, neither too soon nor too late. You don't have to like it… it's just easier if you do.” - Byron Katie When we think of any moment as exactly where we're supposed to be. It's more likely to create that forward momentum in our brains, than it is likely to be used against us." - We Can Do Extraordinary Things, by Jessica Mejia Click here for the eBook: We Can Do Extraordinary Things on AmazonKindle Click Here For The FREE Workbook Click Here For The FREE Facebook Community for beginners in growth and personal development Click Here for next level development inside Coach Curator Collective --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theaudacitytobeambitious/support

OVERCOMING THE EGO talk series www.bfuclub.com/talk-series At the age of 18 her parents wanted her out of the house to figure life out for herself, at the age of 23 is where she felt like a failure because she felt she couldn't figure it out, working two jobs. Bobbi takes us back to her 23yr old self, her parents weren't much of the higher education type, so college wasn't on the table. What Bobbi knew was how to work hard, but she was barely keep her head above water and felt like she was sinking, eating macaroni and tuna casserole pretty much every day. One new year's eve, Bobbi came home from work turned on her t.v so she wouldn't feel lonely, had a conversation with herself as she was reflecting and the insights all started coming to her. "What came back to me was that your life is a reflection of the choices that you've made so far. And as I sat there with that, I thought that's remarkably helpful because if that's true that my life is simply a reflection of the choices that I've made so far, what that means is that if I learn how to make better choices, I can get a better outcome. Within 18 months Bobbi's life changed making more than double than what she had been, but it was a series of just taking chances on herself and exposing herself to new things. Having a speech impediment at the age of 6, her mother taught her a lesson that stayed with her forever. Feeling like a failure and knowing that she had the power to change her life around, Bobbi started to ask those that she thought that had it together she would ask them questions, as well as read countless books looking for the secret sauce. We speak about her Miss Missouri pageant, and how her debate coach taught her some great lessons after each debate. As well as how people showed up in her life that helped her through her life process. Bobbi fell sick in burnout and doctors questioned her 3% chance of survival. With her positive attitude Bobbi said well if 3% survived they had the answers she was seeking to get better. Ten years in her health crisis Bobbi just wanted to get back into her running and physical fitness routine. She learned to take life in stride and take small steps to her recovery. Today Bobbi is healthier than she ever was and has conquered some of the most scariest things so she thought. We speak about so many incredible things on this podcast that will give you inspiration never to give up on yourself. This week we are throwing it back to a conversation I had last year with my good friend, Logan Lester! Logan was Miss Texas USA 2018, the same year I was Miss Missouri! We actually first met for a photoshoot in Central Park, but later reconnected at the Miss USA competition where our friendship solidified. Logan is a well-known realtor in the Houston, Texas area, as well as a fashion blogger. I mean, just check out her Instagram, the girl has got style. I've experienced this myself, but it seems like once you put on the crown, opinions about you come from every direction -- from people who have never met you and don't know a thing about you. People like to tell other people how to live their lives if you haven't found that out yet. With her passions in real estate and fashion, Logan publicly pursues both and for some, that just doesn't sit right. She has heard countless voices tell her that she should only focus on one or the other -- but never both. Rest assured, Logan leads her own life and is going to do what makes her happiest. -- Are you ready to create more CONFIDENCE in your life and starting winning? Podcast Name: Practicing the Art of Faithful PresenceDebbye Turner Bell - Veterinarian, Miss America 1990, Broadcast Media, Leadership ConsultantOn this episode of Practicing the Art of Faithful Presence, Debbye Turner Bell joins host David Wright to speak about her faith, background, career, and much more. Debbye Turner Bell’s life has taken many surprising twists and turns. All of which, she declares fit the plan of God for her life. To start the conversation, Debbye unpacks her journey into broadcasting. Growing up, her goal had always been to become a veterinarian and teach at a veterinary school. Many of the decisions that she made, including getting involved in pageants, were seen as steps on the way to this ultimate goal. After she finished her education, she was recruited by a pet food brand to be a spokesperson for a pet education. Her exposure during this time gained the attention of an agent who thought that Debbye could have a career in broadcast. After declining this offer several times, Debbye finally accepted and was able to establish a long career in broadcast media.Even in media, her work was still centered around animals. Growing up, her mother was an animal lover, who would take in abandoned and abused animals into their home. This taught Debbye to learn to love and respect animals from a very young age. This, paired with a natural curiosity and love of science, created the perfect career goal for Debbye. As an adolescent, she began volunteering at her local veterinary office whenever she had free time. She did this throughout her teenage years until she began college at Arkansas State University. After graduating with a degree in agriculture, she ended up going to veterinary school at the University of Missouri.Next, Dr. Wright asked Debbye what led her to get involved in pageants. She got involved in her first pageant as a part of a service program, where her high school was resurrecting an old pageant as a fundraiser. She volunteered to represent her organization in the pageant and ended up winning. One of the judges in this local pageant recruited her to get more involved in pageants, letting her know that she had the opportunity to receive college scholarships that could help her fulfill her ultimate goal of going to veterinary school. After some modest success in local and the Arkansas state pageant, she eventually won the Miss Missouri competition while in graduate school at the University of Missouri. She prayerfully competed in all of these competitions, setting to fulfill who God created her to be and reach her ultimate purpose. She came to her faith learning from her mother. Faith was interwoven into the fabric of her family and she credits everything she knows about God and his plan for her to her mother.Today, Debbye is living in Grand Rapids, Michigan, leading a consulting business, and is a part-time staff member at her local church.Learn more about Debbye Turner BellLearn more about Practicing the Art of Faithful Presence.Learn more about host David Wright.
Show Up to Go UpEp 19 Show Up with Confidence (with Tori Kruse)In this episode we talk about how to find confidence, how to starve your fear by building faith, and how to keep moving forward despite tough times. Below is a breakdown of our conversation...I hope you enjoy this conversation! For more info you can find me on Instagram at @stephygthatsme/@showuptogoup or www.showuptogoup.com. Contact Tori:@misstorikruseinfo@highlightsnheels.com 1:25 - Have you struggled with fears or confidence issues?Absolutely! She thought she was confident growing up but if she had the confidence back then that she has now (after years of working on herself) then it would have been a totally different story. 2:15 Tori’s Story:She was an athlete growing up and she always had a supportive family that always believed in her. Her faith has led her through every obstacle in her life. One day in college she saw an ad for competing at Miss USA. She signed up for Miss Iowa Teen USA. She didn’t win but she was a semi finalist. She realized she like pageantry so the next year she signed up for Miss USA. After college she moved to Missouri and found a bigger purpose to serve others and 4 years later she won Miss Missouri USA. It took her 8 years to win but her journey was full of discipline and full of lessons and growth. She developed Highlights N Heels based off the knowledge she learned during that time. 6:05 - Can you speak on the impact that personal development has made on your life?It took investing in herself to get to where she is now. She has gained so much knowledge from reading books. The number one book she recommends is The Secret. It helped her realized that her words have power and to pay attention to the things she says. She also recommends Wake Up Happy by Michael Strahan. She used to care so much about what others thought but now she realizes that if people compliment her it’s not about her, it’s about her gifts that she’s been given. 8:15 - Can you think of any specific little things that you would say to yourself that were harming you? She’s very sarcastic but her words were self deprecating. Examples of this are “you’re not smart enough to do this,” or “I’ll never be as good as her.” Even if you’re joking there is a lot of truth that comes with your words so be careful what you say out loud. She also learned to write things into existence. She used to write down that she would be Miss Missouri every day. She was Miss Missouri in her mind for 4 years before it actually happened. Write your dreams down. 10:20 - What does it mean to you to show up for yourself? Taking action. She never loses. She either wins or she learns. Don’t be knocked down by a no because it means you’re closer to a yes. Push through those doubts and get comfortable being uncomfortable. 11:25 - Can you talk a little more about loving being uncomfortable and how you can do that? It’s a process. It’s not an overnight thing. You have to believe in yourself. Words of affirmation have helped her. Writing down encouraging statements and looking at them regularly. “God did not give you this day because you needed it. He gave you this day because someone needed you.” Someone needs you every single day. Removing the pressure off yourself helps. You are here for a reason. 13:05 - Has leaning into your purpose been something that’s helped you move forward during the challenges of covid 19?Her faith has helped her so much. It’s important to focus on faith and starve your fear. She created a product that’s 7 Steps to a Positive Mindset. If anyone is interested you can contact her (see contact info above). It’s in those times of uncertainty that our personalities are able to shine most. Take the focus off yourself and think about the people who need you most and be of service to them. 14:35 - How did you get into coaching and speaking after Miss Missouri USA?Part of her role as Miss Missouri was to speak to audiences. The year before she won, in 2017, she was runner up for Miss Missouri and she moved to LA to pursue her dream of becoming a sports broadcaster. She networked and learned to ask people for help. There are so many people who are willing to help if you are willing to ask. Sometimes you have to do the scariest thing to know that you’re going to make it through. You have to visualize past the hard times and visualize who you want to be as a person and take steps toward that. We are building habits right now during covid19. What habits do you want to take forward after this time? Sticking to her morning routine has helped her keep moving forward. Know where you want to go but pivot if you need to. 20:14 - Can you explain what 10x is and how it has changed your life? 10x is with Grant and Elena Cardone. Their movement is about 10xing your life by thinking bigger than yourself. She loves surrounding herself with people who think big and inspire her. Being a part of the community has helped her catapult her business and career. The coolest thing about personal development is we can take a little bit from everyone and tweak them and use what works for you and your business or life. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel but how can you incorporate your uniqueness. 23:25 - Where did your passion for helping women come from? When she was Miss Missouri she traveled around the state and spoke to young men about sexual assault and respecting women. She would educate them from a girl’s perspective. After Miss USA she had to decide if she wanted to focus on serving women with her skills and lessons she’d learned or continue to serve and educate men She realized she could help and relate to women more easily because she’s been there. 26:43 - What is your favorite quote that you love to live by?"God didn’t give you this day because you needed it. It’s because someone needed you.” AND “Every single no is one step closer to your yes.” 27:40 - What advice or words of encouragement would you give to someone who doesn’t have any confidence? You are enough. You were created for a reason. Make yourself do something to take a little action because there is at least one person that needs you and your smile. 28:50 - Where can people find you and is there anything else you’re excited about? She is hosting a weekly networking zoom call at 4pm PT/7pm ET. You can also text unstoppable to 66866 for a Winning Mindset Starter Guide. You can also reach out to her on social media at @misstorikruse or info@highlightsnheels.com

Welcome to our summer of 2017 clips show. Unlike other shows, we are giving you fresh clips vs. recycling old clips from past shows. First up has John visiting the Illustration Academy in Kansas City two weeks ago. After sitting in on some classes, John interviewed artist Vanesa del Rey and concept artist Wesley Burt. Next, Jerry sat down with some comic book artists back at Smallville Comic Con. To start, X-Men: Gold artist Ken Lashley talks about his time in Smallville and the hubbub around his current assignment. Jerry moved across the aisle to speak to artist Kevin Nowlan, who has done a little bit of everything over his 35-year career in comics. Finally, we did speak to some of our friends at Free Comic Book Day back in May at Clint's Comics. John starts by speaking to Mikayla Carson, Miss City of Fountains in the Miss Missouri program. Mikayla is a comic fan as well as an outstanding ambassador for Kansas City. John then speaks to artist Steve Daniels, a KC artist who is also a regular behind the counter at Clint's Comics.
