Note: This episode was recorded in September of 2024. Nicole deRoux performed as The Bullet for five years (that's over 50 cities and 1,500 performances) before recently shifting gears and becoming a swing on the Philip Tour. This week, Nicole talks about her long-term activism and using her platform to speak out and do good work. Additionally, she talks about her incredible mother, who *also* balances the cerebral with the creative: she is a radiologist *and* an artist. Plus, Nicole explains why everyone needs to lose their mind during the Yorktown dance break and dives into her experience competing for Miss New Jersey including why she did it, what she learned, and why she's never doing it again. Bob and Dave welcomes a shining star to the radio show, with the NJ's teen influencer UmaSofia Srivastava, Miss New Jersey Teen USA... Uma talks about change, going outside your comfort zone and what's it like starting a blog at 12 and soon after crowned Miss New Jersey Teen USA. UmaSofia in her own words: I am UmaSofia Srivastava, the creator behind That's Fan Behavior. On here I cover everything from feminism, my experience as a woman of color, and the many other things I'm passionate about, including advice on topics that wonderful people like you submit! If you've been here since the Summer of 2020 when I first started my blog at only 12, you know that there's been a little bit of a rebrand. I always say that your most authentic self is your best self, and as someone who has experienced a lot of change apart from growing up, - transferring schools in my sophomore year and being crowned Miss New Jersey Teen USA to name just a few - my goal is to inspire people to be their true selves! Whether that means going outside your comfort zone and trying new things, or going through a complete 360º transformation (trust me, I've been there!), I hope that both my achievements and mistakes show you that taking a risk is never the worst thing; not knowing what could've happened if you did, is. So regardless of what people say, remember that only YOU know YOU, and that's all that matters. The rest? That's fan behavior.

Pot, as cannabis is affectionately called by longtime supporters, officially becomes legal on January 1, 2021 in New Jersey, and with no set guidelines in place for implementation, Forchion is looking to plant his seeds firmly in the Garden State's new legalization soil. Ed "NJWeedman" Forchion and his partner, Debi Madaio have snagged international headlines as of recent, vocalizing their stance in New Jersey's trending weed politics. While Madaio has launched a Change.org petition requesting that Governor Phil Murphy grant NJWeedman's Joint a recreational cannabis license, (see https://www.change.org/p/phil-murphy-demand-gov-phil-murphy-grant-njweedman-s-joint-a-recreational-cannabis-license), Forchion has taken a more aggressive stance, suing the State of New Jersey, (Case 3:20-cv-16582-PGS-TJB FORCHION v. When you think of pageant powerhouses, which countries come to mind? Probably the Philippines, Venezuela, Colombia, and the USA- just to name a few. What if we told you that there’s a queen who had the honor of competing in not one, but two of these countries? This competitor would be none other than Venezuelan-American beauty queen, Valentina Sanchez Trivella. Jesse Ladoue McMullen, our Queen of Coaching, and Cara Mund, Miss America 2018, are here to discuss Valentina's journey to both Miss Teen USA and Miss Venezuela. Even though pageants are glamorous, Valentina had to overcome many of life's obstacles and learned how to turn her experience into advocacy. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On today's episode Bobby sits down with his good friend Kirill Vaks. Last week we dropped his episode with Coach Rob Taylor and this is a great compliment to that. Similar to Coach Taylor, Kirill is the founder of Training Aspects. Bobby met Kirill at a friend's 4th of July party several years back. What struck Bobby about Kirill is his WHY. Why he does the work he does as a trainer. He puts it this way on his website, "When I entered the world of training, I quickly realized that the main obstacle to individual achievement was the desire for a “Magic Pill." Everyone wants results right way and with as little effort as possible. This is the genesis of the Training Aspects’ credo “an extreme change lasts a month; a lifestyle change lasts a life time." Kirill realized the importance of understanding individual psychology to achieving goals. With this passion, Kirill studied Psychology at Rutgers University with a concentration on teaching and motivation. He says he is not a personal trainer, his goal is to get you to move, look, and feel as you’ve always desired by making realistic lifestyle changes. This might sound like semantics to you but it means a heck of a lot to Kirill. In this conversation Bobby and Kirill talk about athlete development, business development and company culture. They talk about hiring and maintaining high standards while scaling. They talk about how connection has played an important role in Kirill's success; including becoming the Official Trainer for Miss New Jersey. Kirill's 50 Cups of Coffee story might be the longest one yet and it's another great one! Please enjoy Bobby's cup of coffee with Kirill Vaks.

We discuss his recent book with Michael Jaccarino about the Darwinian epic battle between the New York Daily News and the New York Post. He recounts the madcap behind-the-scenes shenanigans to one-up the other paper that he and other runners and shooters engaged in to get the "wood" and win the day. From covering tragedy and death to getting the scoop on Miss New Jersey, Spitzer, and Derek Jeter, the stories are a fascinating peak into a different era, but Mike also shares his personal journey of evolution from a get-the-story-at-all-costs cub reporter to a place where he just couldn't knock on one more newly-minted widow's door. A fantastic interview, if I say so myself.9/10 Episodes on Journalism and JournalistsThe book:https://www.fordhampress.com/9780823287383/americas-last-great-newspaper-war/Follow Mike on Twitter:@mjaccarino1Where Mike works now:https://theweek.com/Thoughts? Success did not come overnight, and Cierra candidly shared her personal struggles during and after her stardom. Following acclimation, she dedicated her year of service to offering free visual and performing arts lessons to students along the East Coast and advocating for equality in education.
