MDJ Script/ Top Stories for June 25th                  Publish Date:  June 25th    Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Tuesday, June 25th and Happy 77th Birthday to Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood. ***06.25.24 – BIRTHDAY – MICK FLEETWOOD*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Cobb to Consider Pause on Licensing Health Spas Cobb Elections Board Finalizes Runoff Results Man Convicted for Cold Case Murder of Father Shot for $50   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb to Consider Pause on Licensing Health Spas Cobb County officials are proposing a six-month moratorium on licensing health spas due to concerns over code violations, prostitution, and human trafficking activities reported at local massage parlors. The county's Community Development Department has highlighted evasion of law enforcement by illicit spa establishments as a significant issue. The moratorium aims to halt new licenses while regulations are tightened to address these issues. Recent incidents, such as a sexual assault allegation at a massage parlor, have underscored the need for stricter oversight. Similar measures have been implemented in neighboring cities like Roswell to combat human trafficking. The county hopes to finalize new regulations by November to better manage this industry. STORY 2: Cobb Elections Board Finalizes Runoff Results The Cobb Board of Elections unanimously certified results from the June 18 runoff, confirming turnout of 2.49% with 5,750 votes cast out of 231,011 eligible voters across two races. Dr. Jaha Howard won the Democratic runoff for Cobb Board of Commissioners District 2 with 73.07% of the vote, advancing to face Republican Pamela Reardon in November. In the Democratic runoff for Congressional District 14, retired U.S. Army Brigadier Gen. Shawn Harris secured 69% of the vote, setting up a general election contest against incumbent U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. STORY 3: Man Convicted for Cold Case Murder of Father Shot for $50 Dontavian Jones, 22, has been found guilty for the 2016 murder of Dewenzell Spence, 41, in Cobb County. This marks the second conviction in Spence's case, with Terrance Marshall previously sentenced to life without parole. Spence was abducted at gunpoint in Atlanta, forced to withdraw money, then fatally shot in Mableton. His body was discovered in a heavily decomposed state days later. Surveillance footage and facial recognition identified the perpetrators. Senior Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Green described the crime as horrifying and expressed hope for justice in sentencing. Jones faces sentencing on July 15.     We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back.   Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Kennesaw Resident Carly Vogel Wins Miss Tennessee Title   Carley Vogel, 23, from Kennesaw, was crowned Miss Tennessee 2024 at the East Tennessee State University Martin Center in Johnson City. She earned a $17,500 scholarship and will represent Tennessee at the Miss America Competition in January 2024 in Orlando, Florida. Vogel, a student at Middle Tennessee State University, impressed judges with her vocal performance of “Climb Every Mountain” from "The Sound of Music." Previously Miss Cobb County, she placed third runner-up in Miss Georgia 2022. Vogel joins Miss Georgia 2024 Lulu Louizaire in vying for the Miss America title. The Miss Cobb County pageant, promoting scholarship and community service, will take place on August 3 at the Jennie T. Anderson Theater, offering over $20,000 in scholarships and prizes. STORY 5: Could AI dramatically improve how quickly we diagnose cancer? British scientists have developed a prototype using machine learning to diagnose cancer with over 98% accuracy, identifying 13 types including breast, liver, lung, and prostate cancer. The technology analyzes DNA methylation patterns, which can indicate cancerous changes early on. These patterns, caused by environmental factors altering DNA bases, are crucial for distinguishing cancerous tissue from healthy samples. Published in Biology Methods & Protocols, the study's AI model is trained to interpret these patterns, potentially revolutionizing early cancer detection. Researchers emphasize the need for further diverse biopsy testing to refine the model for clinical use, aiming to enhance patient outcomes by enabling earlier treatment interventions. Break: INGLES 8 STORY 6: Two Injured in Motorcycle Wreck Near KSU Two people were seriously injured in a motorcycle crash near Kennesaw State University. The motorcycle, driven by an unidentified man and carrying 18-year-old Helen Mastranni of Canton, was traveling east on Chastain Road. A Lexus driven by 22-year-old Sierra Lee from Louisiana, traveling west, turned left onto Barrett Lakes Boulevard with a green arrow, colliding with the motorcycle that had entered the intersection on a red turn signal. The impact separated the riders from the bike. Both were hospitalized with serious injuries at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Lee also sought medical attention for injuries. The crash is under investigation, and Cobb Police are seeking information from witnesses at 770-499-3987. STORY 7: Police: Smyrna Man Fatally Shot Female Roommate George Perry, 40, of Smyrna, has been arrested and charged with murder after fatally shooting his roommate, Davon McDaniel, early Friday morning. Perry called 911 himself to report the shooting at their apartment on Cumberland Glen Lane. He indicated he shot McDaniel in the chest but did not provide a reason and did not appear fearful during the call. Police found McDaniel suffering from a gunshot wound and attempted aid but he was pronounced dead at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Perry, who showed no injuries, was arrested and refused to speak without a lawyer present. He faces charges including possession of a firearm during a crime and is held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. In just the past two days, Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed a huge package of anti-immigration legislation for the state, and we entered a world where COVID-19 is no longer an official public health emergency. LIVE: Lee Greenwood -- The Story Behind "God Bless The USA" LIVE: Lee Greenwood -- The Story Behind "God Bless The USA" Music has always been a part of Lee Greenwood's life. He started playing the piano when he was seven and the saxophone at 12. In junior high, he started his first group called the Moonbeams. His sister Patricia was the piano player in the band. By the time, he finished High School he played most all the instruments in the orchestra and was the Drum Major for the marching band.   Greenwood was born in Los Angeles California & finished high school in Sacramento in June 1960. He passed on track & music scholarships to the College of the Pacific along with a professional baseball career to pursue his passion for music. He also elected to skip his high school graduation ceremony to begin work at the Golden Hotel & Casino in Reno Nevada with his own band, the “Apollos”. That turned out to be a great choice. The California native was discovered in 1979 by Larry McFaden, who saw him performing in a show at the Nugget Casino in Sparks, Nevada. Larry was the bass player and bandleader for Mel Tillis. He brought the singer to Nashville and got him signed to the Halsey Agency, who booked The Oak Ridge Boys. He began working with producer Jerry Crutchfield who would record with Lee for the next 20 years.   “Choosing songs to record is always exciting,” says Greenwood. “I'm a songwriter as well and I love lyrics that have depth and emotion. I'm thankful for the many writers & artists who have contributed to my career”.   With seven #1 songs & 25 charted singles to his credit, choosing songs proved to be a success for Greenwood. His country hits include: “It Turns Me Inside Out”, “Ring On Her Finger Time On Her Hands”, ”She's Lying”, “I Don't Mind the Thorns If You're The Rose”, “Dixie Road”, “Somebody's Gonna Love You”, “Going Going Gone”, “You Got A Good Love Comin”, “Fools Gold”, and “Mornin Ride” while he already garnered several crossover hits such as “Touch & Go Crazy”, “IOU” and the duet with Barbara Mandrell, “To Me”.   Lee Greenwood has won numerous industry awards including, Male Vocalist of the Year from the Academy of Country Music in 1983, two Male Vocalist of the Year awards from the Country Music Association in 1983 & 1984 and a Grammy for Top Male Vocal Performance in 1985 for “I.O.U.”. The CMA also named “God Bless The U.S.A.” its Song of the Year in 1985.   “God Bless the USA” went far beyond what Greenwood expected when he wrote it in the back of his tour bus in 1983. The song has been in the top five on the country singles charts three times (1991, 2001 and 2003), giving it the distinction of being the only song in any genre of music to achieve that feat. It was also #1 on the pop charts after 9/11/01. In addition, CBS News voted “God Bless The U.S.A.” the most recognizable patriotic song in America. In 2011, Beyonce offered her version of “God Bless the U.S.A.” as a download, with the proceeds going to the 9/11 firefighters fund in NYC. It has been performed by contestants on “American Idol” twice & was the winning song in the 2011 “Dancing with the Stars” competition on ABC. It is performed at all military and patriotic events throughout the year all across America. “USA” has also been in several movies and is now part of the film shown by The Department of Homeland Security when new citizens are sworn in to the United States.   Greenwood says; “USA is the song I always felt the need to write. I wanted to have something that would unite Americans from coast to coast and to instill pride back in the United States. The song represents my family, my community and those men and women who have paid the price for the freedoms we all love and enjoy.” President George W. Bush appointed Greenwood to serve on the National Endowment of the Arts Council and his appointment was U.S. Senate approved. That Presidential Appointment continued under President Obama and still continues under President Trump.   In 2012, Greenwood released a children's illustrated book, “Does God Still Bless the U.S.A.,” and ranked #1 on many of the notable Best Sellers Lists. It features a 30 day calendar, “Prayers of a Patriot” and includes two songs, written by Greenwood, free for download in the back of the book. One is a new version of “God Bless the U.S.A.,” and the other is a Praise & Worship song, “Show Me The Way”.   Lee and his wife, Kimberly, a former Miss Tennessee, fell in love on his 1989 USO/DOD tour. We’re excited to have Hayley Lewis, the beautiful sports anchor for the 41 Action News sports team, joining us as our guest for today’s podcast!  Hayley has an incredible job, and she has an inspiring story to tell. In today’s show, she shares her story, talks about what she stands for, tells us what it’s like to do what she does for a living, and discusses what a privilege it was for her to grow up in a wonderful family, with dynamic and supportive parents. Making sacrifices to assist the children Hayley’s grandparents raised their children so that they could have far more than their parents ever had, and to be far more successful than their parents ever were. Their point was to sacrifice everything so that they could give it all to their children, and Hayley hopes to do the same one day for her children.  About Hayley Hayley was born and raised in Kansas City. Her mother was a school counselor, her father was a head football coach, and her brother was in D1 football. Talking about sports was in her blood, and it came easily to her.  While attending college in Nashville, Hayley competed for Miss America, and she got placed in the top ten out of 53 competitors. In 2014, she won the Miss Tennessee title. As Miss Tennessee, Hayley served as the governor’s Official Spokesperson for Character Education, so she traveled a lot, and spoke to thousands of school children about character and respect. She also played several spokesperson roles, and she had numerous TV appearances, which all contributed towards preparing her for her current career. In 2019, Hayley joined the 41 Action News sports team when she moved back to her hometown of Kansas City from Eugene, Oregon, where she was a sports reporter and anchor for ABC KEZI 9. What Hayley’s job is like for her Even though her job can be tiresome at times, it is also a lot of fun. And Hayley knows that many people are envious of the role she plays because she gets to talk directly to so many great sporting personalities.  Doing something phenomenal What Hayley does is quite phenomenal because she gets to develop relationships and build chemistry with some great sportspeople. She gets the opportunity to speak to them about anything, learn about their families, their backgrounds, and stories, and find out how much more there is to them than being just players.  A high-pressure job Hayley’s job is high-pressure because she is always on a time-crunch. And although she is running around, doing her best to get things done, and trying to look decent on TV, she says she would not trade it for the world! What high school was like Hayley had a lot of fun growing up, but having her dad as the head coach of the school meant that she never got a date in high school because nobody wanted to date the coach’s daughter! So she only started dating in college.  A big reason for Hayley becoming a sports broadcaster People get into sports broadcasting for many different reasons. One of the big reasons Hayley got into it was because while she was growing up, sports had always been the main topic around their dinner table, and her family spoke about it all the time.  All the ins and outs of the industry By following her dad’s career, watching him as a football player, and seeing her younger brother develop as a football player, Hayley got to know all the ins and outs of the sporting industry. A father-figure to his players Hayley’s parents had a special dynamic within the sporting industry, and her family would travel all over the country to watch her dad playing football. Her dad was all about being a father figure to his players because many of them did not have that kind of guidance and influence at home. Hayley’s dad was a devoted leader, and her mom cared a lot Hayley loved the way her father devoted himself to his players as well as to the game. Her mom used to go alongside him, try to work at the same high schools as he did, and do her best to help the kids and guide them.  Amazing parents Hayley’s parents were both talented people. They had master’s degrees, and they were passionate about giving back, educating children, and creating opportunities for them. A rock for so many people Over the years, Hayley has put out a lot of information about her dad on social media. So, people keep on reaching out to her and explaining how much of an influence he was to them.  A moving realization It was very moving for Hayley to realize that her dad was not only a rock for her family, but he was also for a dad for so many other kids.    Links and resources: Hayley on Twitter  Hayley on Instagram

A few  weeks ago, a dear friend of mine double-dog dared me to enter into the Miss Tennessee for America beauty pageant. Among other reasons, he knew that because it was SO far outside my comfort zone, there was a massive breakthrough waiting for me on the other side of it. But as he said to me that day, I had to get “on the court” in order to find it. My immediate reaction was "No way! Are you kidding me? Me? Enter into a beauty pageant?" The voices in my head immediate said: "You're too old!" "You're not a size 2!" “You're too much [fill-in-the-blank] or not enough [fill-in-the-blank]!" "You know nothing about pageants!" And then a higher voice said: "That's exactly why you need to do it Leanne! This is your chance to re-define (and help others re-define) what beauty IS and what it is NOT -- that beauty doesn't have to mean a certain shape, a certain age, a certain size… that beauty is not a SEEING, it's a BEING." So what did I do? At the ripe ol' age of 37, with no experience, no knowledge, and not a clue about anything beauty-pageant-related, I signed up to compete less than 2 weeks out. ⭐️ It was the EPITOME of me facing my own deepest fears, insecurities, and comparison-itus tendencies. ⭐️ It was my own self-image and body-image experiment to break through my own self-limiting beliefs. ⭐️ It was an experience I'm honestly still processing, and really just figuring out how to share right now.  In this episode of the podcast, I share the details of how everything went down, but in the meantime, I’ll just summarize my experiences by saying this: YOU get to say who you ARE and who you are NOT. If you want to do ANYTHING, the only thing stopping you are those voices in your head saying you CAN'T or saying you WON'T. Four weeks ago, I thought you had to be a 'skinny mini' or in your 20's be in a beauty pageant, but after my experience , I think it's safe to say that's just not the case. And just in case you're wondering, spoiler alert: this 'non-beauty-pageant gal' was chosen as: ⭐️Placed 3rd Runner Up for the State of Tennessee ⭐️Was voted on to be an Ambassador for The Miss for America Organization ⭐️Am The Official "Miss East Nashville" Never say never. Because you might just surprise yourself. I sure did! ❤️ Listen to the full episode of the podcast where I go through the in’s and outs of my experience entering a beauty pageant!

In the 21st episode of the podcast, the girls celebrate a major league debut, catch up with an old friend and former podcast guest and check in on the college world series. The first guest is Sara Krutewicz, fiancé of Padres relief pitcher Robert Stock, who made his major league debut against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. The girls were able to witness Stock’s scoreless 10th inning and watch him face the likes of Joe Panik and Gorkys Hernandez. Sara joined the girls first to talk about the whirlwind call-up – from booking flights to SF to a sleepless night before his possible appearance; she walks the girls through every emotional moment. Sara talks about how special it was to watch his debut from the front row at AT&T surrounded by his family. Then the girls are joined by the man himself, Robert Stock who calls in from his hotel room in Dallas, TX. Stock, a 10-year baseball journeyman, talks about what it was like finally getting the big league call-up – from the moment his manager called him into his office to the second he stepped out on that major league mound. The call-up comes as no surprise, as Stock boasted a gaudy 1.93 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings out of the bullpen with the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Padres Triple-A affiliate. Stock talks about his exceptional inning and how special it was to have his family there in the front row, cheering him on. He also talks about his pitching process as well as his recovery and he discuses not wanting to shake off catcher Austin Hedges too much. Finally, he goes down the Westworld rabbit hole, sharing his thoughts from this past season ahead of the finale. The girls wish Robert all the best and promise to catch up with him down the road.Lastly, the girls are joined by KEZI sports anchor and reporter Hayley Lewis who is calling them live from Omaha, Nebraska where she is covering the Oregon State Beavers in their quest for college World Series domination. Hayley, a former Miss Tennessee title winner and Miss America contestant describes what it has been like covering the Beavers special baseball season. Guests: Miss Tennessee 2017 Caty Davis and Miss Florida contestant Emily McLeod Today I’m joined by two special guests who use their unique platforms to bring attention to the both the gravity of the addiction crisis and the profound hope of recovery. My first guest is Caty Davis, the reigning Miss Tennessee. In that role, she has made it her mission to serve as an ambassador for addiction prevention and recovery, sharing her own family’s story of tragedy and hope to educate and empower others across the state. Then I welcome Emily McLeod. Like Caty, Emily is using her platform in the Miss Florida pageant to help break the stigma and start some tough, but necessary, conversations about alcohol and drug abuse. She sat down with me at the Moments of Change conference in Florida to share the turning point in her own story of addiction and explain how she hopes to make the most of the second chance that she’s been given. A portion of our Young Turks Main Show from September 15, 2015. For more go to http://www.tytmembership.com.  Cenk and Ana hosting. O'Reilly's attack dog Jesse Watters went on an ambush interview of Bernie Sanders. Video of the annoying encounter. Cenk is ok with these ambush interviews of elected officials. He's annoyed that Watters' line of questioning is treating him as a joke. Video of Watters and O'Reilly laughing over their encounter. Carly Fiorina released a new campaign ad using Donald Trump's demeaning words about “her face” to appeal to female voters. Video of the ad. Although Ana disagrees with Fiorina's agenda, she admits the ad made her feel for her. A study uncovered the surprising costs for the families of incarcerated people. The star of Entourage tweeted an image of a meme that mourned Americans lost on 9-11 as well as the tons of Iraqis lost in the war we shouldn't have started. Outrage ensued. Cenk reminds everyone that people like Glenn Beck called the families of victims of 9-11 whiners that want something from the government. Miss Tennessee of the Miss America pageant gave a thoughtful answer on funding Planned Parenthood, which sparked anger from Dana Loesch. Sarah Silverman addressed many comedians' decision to not perform at colleges because they've become ultra PC. She pointed out that people that don't like PC sound like old people that refuse to change. Video of her answer. President Obama addressed the discussion as well, and defended the presence of potentially offensive speakers that may show up at college campuses to speak.
