State of the Arts Episode 232 The Mother's Day Special now available on Spotify! In a touching interview, Naida Minaya, a mother of two adorable boys, speaks with me about modeling, acting, beauty pageants and being a security guard. This dynamic mom manages to juggle motherhood, working toward a position in a mall K-9 unit and a side hustle as a hair/makeup model on a regular basis. She was selected to compete in the Miss New York beauty pageant in Albany and was at one time a model for Columbian designer brand “Bogota.” With an interest in acting, she made her silver screen debut in my recent pet documentary “Angels in Our Midst.” The audience was introduced to her precious little feathered friend CoCo, whom she has trained very well. CoCo comforted Naida after the passing of her mother and is a sweet companion to her best friend Brandy Renee Baker's group of birds. This episode is heartfelt tribute to an incredible mom and inspirational career woman.

Taryn Delanie is a content creator and a former Miss New York. Taryn grew up in Seattle and originally had her heart set on becoming a diplomat. She gained a bachelor's degree in communication studies from St. John's University, and even spent time in Paris working in diplomacy. But when she was studying for a master's degree in international communication and intercultural studies at St. John's (and trying to stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic), she started posting comedic videos on TikTok. She immediately went viral, and her second-ever video—which was of reviewing her less-than-desirable NYC apartment—currently has over 21 million views. She started posting regularly, with fans loving her honest, joyful sense of humor. Ever the multitasker, in 2022, she won the Miss New York pageant, spending her time raising awareness of housing insecurity, and in 2023, she became the first runner-up for Miss America. In the last year, she's grown her following and created new and instantly beloved characters like Denise, a receptionist in heaven. She's also explored new opportunities such as co-hosting the Amazon Prime talk show Influenced.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 035: Let's be real - the beauty industry is saturated with influencer skincare brands and TikTok viral products that make you feel like you're living in a hamsterwheel trying to stay on top of the newest and coolest hacks and products. When Emma Harbeck competed this past weekend for the Miss New York title in the Miss America competition, she sang the song “Reflection” from the 1998 Disney film based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan.Mulan spares her grandfather by disguising herself as a boy so she can become a warrior in his stead.“Somehow I cannot hide who I am, though I've tried,” Harbeck sang to the Miss America judges in Peekskill. “When will my reflection show who I am inside?”“I think the whole point of the song is a girl talking about how she feels like she can't be herself because she's trying to please other people,” says Harbeck in this week's Enterprise podcast. “And I think … that as girls in the organization, we're obviously teens and we're growing and we're learning … I really wanted to have a piece that myself and other girls could relate to, so that's why I chose that song.”Harbeck, 17, is a Guilderland High School junior and Miss Capital Region Outstanding Teen. She has a passion for singing, she says, and sings in both the concert choir and the chamber choir at her school. She also played the part of Clarissa in the school musical last year, “Little Women.”Read the full article: https://altamontenterprise.com/06062022/emma-harbeck-says-everyone-beautiful See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

She recalls how it was growing up Albanian American and sometimes feeling like an outsider with both cultures. She said that the Miss New York and the Miss USA competitions allowed her to grow and learn, and meet so many amazing women. To also understand what she wants in life and how she can give back, and help others, especially her own family. She speaks on her passion to be an emergency care doctor or a physicians assistant to help those dealing with trauma in different ways. She opens up about her life, her goals, her dreams, and so much more. She gives raw insight on the world around her and how she strives to be her authentic self. As the first episode back post Miss USA I caught up with Andreia Gibau, Miss New York USA, to talk about what it was like being on the Miss USA stage and what is next in store.Andreia is the reigning Miss New York USA 2020 and works as a public speaker, writer, and philanthropist. Gibau considers philanthropy being the core of who she is due to being an immigrant from Cape Verde and being born into poverty. She was named Phoenix magazine's 30 under 30 for philanthropy and speaks 4 languages which has been a great asset since she's an avid traveler. A scientist and winner of the Miss New York pageant launches a ground-breaking digital publication that harnesses the style and glamour of today’s business-minded woman. Sounds like the premise for a good movie, doesn’t it? The star of that story in real life is Iman Oubou, who noticed gender disparities in business as well as a media bias in the way the modern woman is represented. She launched SWAAY to position these founders as the new icons, providing content and community for them to empower each other. She joins Socialfly co-founder Courtney Spritzer in the MouthMedia Network studio for a conversation about building her business and career, and describes her journey to success. Plus, a surprise and a brainstorm! In this episode: How Iman has worked as a champion of female entrepreneurs and her journey hosting the popular podcast Entrepreneurs En Vogue. How Iman learned a lot as a pageant person, including public speaking, and communication—and how she still uses those skills everyday. The importance of taking care of yourself so you don’t burn out too early. The additional challenges of fundraising as a woman. And—her quest to add Morocco as a contestant in the Miss Universe pageant.
My guest today finished 2nd runner up in 2015 at the Miss United States pageant. She is a Moroccan-American self-made entrepreneur, the founder and CEO of Swaay Media and was a 2018 Miss Universe Selection Committee Member Through her experience with business, pageantry and STEM, she noticed a bias media representation of women which inspired her to launch SWAAY, which is a digital platform highlighting stories of female leaders challenging the status-quo,and championing the voices of female change-makers through substantive and inspiring content. Her podcast, Women Who SWAAY, was number 2 on iTunes in 2015, and was ranked in the top 5 best podcasts for women entrepreneurs by Inc. Magazine. She was named by CIO Magazine the number one “Female Entrepreneur to Watch” in 2018. She also had the honor to be one of 2018's keynote speakers at Harvard’s Women In Business.

After immigrating to the U.S. from Morocco as a teenager, Iman Oubou had to learn not only a new language, but also a new culture. She quickly adapted and went on to earn degrees in biochemistry and biomedical engineering, as well as to become Miss New York. When a pageant judge asked her if she’d rather have beauty or brains, it spurred Oubou’s entrepreneurial spirit. Fast forward to today, and Oubou is cultivating an online community, Swaay, for women to celebrate prowess in business and beauty — however they define both — without having to compromise either. Want to find out more? You’ll get it all on this episode of SheVentures.

She is well known for her advocacy work in the war veteran's community, inspired by her grandfather, a decorated WWII veteran. Welcome Alyse Zwick!
It was an absolute pleasure to do this interview with Iman Oubou, Founder & CEO of Swaay Media, a media agency creating content that is focused at women that are looking for executive, and business content on a beautiful and engaging platform. I loved getting to know more about her story and understanding how her journey from Morocco to the US at 15 lead her to the incredible entrepreneur she is today!
Kelsey Caine and I connected because we have both competed in pageants. I was Miss Subways 2017, but Kelsey competed in an actual beauty pageant! Miss New York! Anyway it was snowing like a motherf*cker and Kelsey was about 35 minutes late. I had to hold down the fort with stories about bra shopping and a conversation with a call-in baker in Nova Scotia. Kelsey did give us a back scene view of the pageant world from the most HILARIOUS perspective—she was competing in the most subversive way, stained ball gown, etc. Really entertaining and enlightening on how women are treated in these situations. She's great and we will reschedule her for a full episode soon! Linda Clifford was one of the most successful disco divas of the late 70s. While being signed to Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label she racked up a bunch of hits on the R&B and Dance charts including a handful of #1s like "Runaway Love" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now". She worked hard during the disco era releasing six stellar albums in three years, but by the mid-80s when tastes had changed Linda decided to step away to raise her family. Time has been good to Linda however and not only is she currently touring as one of the First Ladies of Disco with other legends like Martha Wash and Evelyn "Champagne" King, but Blixa Sounds is rereleasing four of her classic albums from this era on cd on 8/24. Here we talk about her time as an actress, what it was like working with luminaries like Mayfield and Isaac Hayes, the controversy surrounding her being crowned Miss New York in 1966 and how her life changed when her hit "Red Light" was featured on the soundtrack to the smash hit Fame. Linda is a wonderful woman and deserves this late-career surge! http://thelindaclifford.com/ http://firstladiesofdiscoshow.com/ http://blixa.com/

Pageant Junkies | Hopelessly Addicted to the Miss America Program
Obviously, some pretty exceptional women in the Miss America system have come from the state of New York! In today's podcast, Jamie Lynn Macchia, Miss New York 2015 says, "I had the great fortune of competing with all of them." Jamie Lynn's story is really fascinating - having competed with Mallory, Nina and Kira before winning the title herself... But it's her advice to contestants that I find the most compelling part of this entire interview! Listen in and see for yourself on today's Pageant Junkies Podcast. :)

In 2003, Alexandra filmed her first Television Movie for ABC- TV: "Romy and Michelle - In The Beginning." She then made Television history by being the first Transgendered Female to play a Transgendered Female character on Television. Soon after, she was cast as the "Nasty Transsexual with a heart of gold" on the now defunct show "Karen Sisco." In 2004, she filmed an episode of "Grey’s Anatomy" which won a "GLAAD Award for Outstanding Episode." She’s also appeared on "E.R." and filmed the pilot "Nurses" for ABC playing opposite one of her childhood idols, Lynn Redgrave. In 2007 she completed her first film "Socket" directed by her old Chicago pal Sean Abley and completed a pilot for F/X directed by gorgeous Ryan Murphy and co-starring Joseph Fiennes and Blythe Danner called "Pretty/Handsome." As an interesting side note, it is thought that almost every role played by her on stage, has been the only time they’ve ever been recreated by a Transgendered actress in the history of theatre.
