Vanessa Stockard recently visited the podcast for the 3rd time!Vanessa Stockard was born in 1975 in Sydney and spent her formative years in a small country town in the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. At 12 she returned to Sydney as a boarder at Abbotsleigh. After graduating from the College of Fine Arts (COFA) Sydney in 1998 with a BFA, Stockard launched head first into the avant-garde art scene in the bohemian village of Glebe.Stockard is one of the most dangerous artists on the Australian, and by extension, international scene. Her ethereal works of art are a window into the soul of a talented and complex artist, one whose legacy is bound to resonate well past her generation. The existential nature of her painting viscerally questions our concepts of social relationships and reality.Twenty years of introspection and experimentation, ranging over a number of media, have forged Vanessa's style and vulcanised her craft, enabling her to reveal complex misdemeanours, while simultaneously demanding the viewer's self-reflection. She deals with isolation and sadness with intimate care and attention.Vanessa is unhindered by failure, always continuing the discovery of things previously unseen, revealing work that is fresh, unlaboured and penetrating. The deceptive everyday nature of her subject matter belies hidden depths of relationship, feeling and emotion. One could describe her process as absence of thought, a freedom of construct, not unlike the stream of consciousness associated with authors such as Hemmingway and Thomas Wolfe.If light and shade were students, she would be their master. This skill, combined with a naturally deft hand and a determined use of perspective, imbue her subjects with gravitas. The artist refers to set design elements that often alter and morph as her piece progresses. She has said she feels grounded from her ability to draw from the benign surrounds of familiar life, infusing these images with a meaning that yields a meditative satisfaction.Stockard's oeuvre features many pieces developed without any direct visual reference but rather from memory, often incorporating domestic pets such as cats and dogs. Juxtaposing the anthropomorphic nature these animals are given by our society, she infuses the personification of virtue and vice into the everyday canine and feline status quo of our pets. Cats with their fluffy comical exteriors glint with an instinctive urge to kill and cruelly torment their prey, dogs with their providence of happiness, loyalty and friendship are flung back onto Churchill's menacing metaphor for depression.The Kafkaesque mindset behind such works is reminiscent of the existentialist authors like Sartre and Camus. Absurdism appears with cake imagery and its relation to a childlike nostalgia for happiness which may never be real, but rather imaginary, unattainable and unachievable. It's been said “pain is inexhaustible, it's only people who get exhausted…”One can never “have it all”, to be both the artist and patron. To intrinsically understand those things around us that others overlook is what we want from our artists, our creatives. They give voice to the profound mystery of the world around us, surrounded as we are with consumerism, pointless greed, deceit and dissatisfaction. There's no pretension here in these paintings, just spontaneous insight and beauty. Some art is said to speak volumes, but these works are more like innocent and delicate poems, whispering untold truths with an economy of words.Something Rather Than Nothing Podcast

This episode pulls back the curtain on the trial of Dondie Tidwell, Greg Dodson's nephew-in-law accused of the crime. The emotional testimonies of Mary Reese and Joy Dodson, Greg's mother and wife, alongside neighbor Vivian Knox, paint a haunting picture of racial slurs and threats from Tidwell. Meanwhile, Chris Stacey's testimony, the man who already confessed to the murder, tries to shift the blame away from Tidwell.The media often slaps the 'innocent victim' label on victims who fit a certain profile - white and affluent. But victims come from all walks of life, and their stories deserve to be told. Greg Dodson, a 22-year-old father and husband, was no less of a victim because of his race, creed, or socio-economic status. Let's remember Greg Dodson, acknowledge his life, and explore the circumstances of his tragedy. Remember, justice may be blind, but we are not.Demsky, Ian. “Man convicted of 1996 killing to get new trial.” The Tennessean. I've spent a lot of time on the podcast so far discussing discovery learning, but not had any episodes explicitly dedicated to what might be considered its antithesis, Direct Instruction. In this episode I finally get round to this worthy topic. First of all, uppercase "Direct Instruction", or DI for short, should be distinguished from lowercase "direct instruction". The latter refers to explicit teaching in general, whereas the former, as a proper noun, refers to a specific implementation and philosophy as designed by Siegfried Engelmann and colleagues, starting in the early 1960s. Direct Instruction is also considered to be a type of Comprehensive School Reform (CSR), and indeed, in my episode covering a meta-analysis of CSR I pointed out that DI was one of the three most effective CSR models. Direct Instruction came to fame in the early 1970s as a result of Project Follow Through, which was the largest educational study ever funded by the United States government. DI was one of the 13 models used in the program and performed very well. Since then it has had a further half century of evidence gathering, which will give us plenty to look at. In this first part of the episode, I introduce the nature and methods of Direct Instruction, as well as a brief introduction to Project Follow Through. The aim is to have you familiar with exactly what this approach is before we go into how well it does or doesn't work in the later recordings of this episode. Enjoy the episode. *** REFERENCES The Direct Instruction Follow Through Model: Design and Outcomes by Engelmann et al. Rachel Stockard from Birmingham, Alabama, joins Kimberly Nichole to discuss how we can love our spouse through the hard places we may face in life. She walks us through how she decided to honor her wedding vows during a tumultuous time in her marriage and how God restored them both even when they did not realize He was working on their behalf. Rachel Stockard is a daughter, wife, mom, sister, friend, and overcomer! In a loving but broken home, she grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. So many of her experiences in life have been driven by that brokenness, only to understand what God has in store for me! Her husband and Rachel met and immediately fell in love and faced the horrible darkness of addiction early in our marriage. Over the years, while facing this tumultuous battle, God was preparing us to do His work and mightily walk beside other families facing addiction. What was once such a shameful and humiliating time in their life has turned into our greatest joy to share.
There are worse things we could do than a whole episode on the magnetic Stockard Channing, so you know what, you're getting one. It's episode 23 and we were only too delighted to visit the career of the legendary Ms. Channing, for another installment in our one-time Oscar nominees miniseries. And Stockard is an ideal candidate given she should have sack loads of them if she were given the right opportunities. Stockard is an irresistible screen presence, so it was with great pleasure that we were able to dip into her eclectic filmography. We of course cover iconic favourites like Grease - to discuss her MVP performance as Betty Rizzo - and The First Wives Club (how could we not). We also venture into a variety of her other career highlights such as Six Degrees Of Separation, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, and The Business of Strangers. This episode saw Michael take to the hot seat for some super fun Quiz time, proving how well (or not) he knows Stockard co-stars over the years. We then dabble in some fantasy musing, sharing with you all some dream film roles we'd LOVE for this acting great. So please join us for our latest entry of Don't Know Her. It was a financial flop at the box office but time has made it an under appreciated cult film. Can cupid's arrow find it's mark in a remake? Vanessa Stockard is an Australian painter. I had the great pleasure of speaking with her about:Cats borne of heaven and hellPaintingHer time in Oregon, USABecoming a MumSomethingNothing.Her paintings, generously displayed on instagram, will steal your heart. When I see her paintings, I instantly feel like I am living and laughing and loving. Make sure you take the time to experience them. Your life will improve.{Prior to interviewing her I suspected that she was part Trafalmadorian, one of those beings that inhabit Kurt Vonnegut's Trafalmador. Trafalmadorians are beings who exist in all times simultaneously, and are thus privy to knowledge of future events, including the destruction of the universe. I did not ask her about this as my independent research failed to yield any proof. However, I will ask her directly next time . . . }

Grease is the 110th effort in the Next 100 Project series and this was not an easy movie to review. As popular as it was and still is, the Travolta/OLJ singathon’s story and characters can’t keep up with the uber-famous songs. But, man, those songs are beloved for a reason. For great java, you just gotta hit up SparkplugCoffee.com and don’t hesitate to save 10% on your first order by using the promo code “Top100Project”.
"Grease" may be 40 years old, but the movie musical is still iconic and enjoyable. That doesn't mean, however, that our fearless leader likes everything about it. In this week's episode, Josh runs down some of what works and what doesn't and, in the end, decides that "Grease" is still pretty slick.

Vanessa Stockard's work is powerful. If you look into the eyes of her ‘Self-portrait as new mum’ which is hanging in the Archibald Prize this year you’ll probably see something different to the person standing next to you. Her expert use of colour and mixture of some looser and other more deliberate marks makes it one of those beguiling paintings where the expression is so subtle that it’s open to multiple interpretations. She's been painting for over 20 years, had over 15 solo shows in Australia and the US and has been in many more group exhibitions, but this year Stockard has really stepped it up a gear with her selection as a finalist in both the Archibald Prize and the Portia Geach Memorial Award. She lives in Bowral in the southern highlands of NSW with her husband and 18 month old daughter in the beautiful and fabulously eclectic home her husband William Wolfenden designed and built. The plans included a roomy studio where she spends as much time as she can, constantly exploring new ideas. In this episode, we talk about what it’s been like being a parent for the first time, why she forced herself to do dozens of self portraits, life at boarding school and why humour is so important in her life. We also talk about Instagram, taking risks and her fascinating Derek Milkwood series - all with a good dose of humour. She's vivacious, funny and incredibly talented - don't miss this interview!
