Castlehaven beaten, penalty drama, Patrick Horgan tribute and hurling preview

Castlehaven's reign as champions is over after St Finbarr's blasted a remarkable six goals in their Premier Senior Football Championship quarter-final clash. Steven Sherlock stitched three of them and the margin of victory now makes the Blues the favourites for Andy Scannell Cup. They're still in the hunt for the double too, with a semi-final against Sars on the horizon. There was no shortage of drama in the other football quarter-finals, Newcestown surviving a penalty shootout with Carrigaline and Ballincollig grabbing the last three scores against Duhallow to win by a point. Cork hurler Luke Meade and super subkeeper Christopher White were the Newcestown heroes while Dara Dorgan, Seán O'Neill and Tadhg O'Connell raised the white flags the Collig. There were some upsets in the lower grades, including Ballinora's victory over previously unbeaten Gabriel Rangers while Ilen Rovers, who have dropped down the tiers in recent years, defeated Mitchelstown despite the return of Mark Keane. Kanturk and Knocknagree produced an absolute belter in the SAFC, John Fintan Daly's side moving on after extra time. There were some brilliant individual displays. Sherlock hit a hat-trick and Ian Maguire was the Barrs' standout performer. Éire Óg beat Bishopstown and former Cork U20 All-Ireland winner Jack Murphy was immense. Adam Walsh Murphy got three points from wing-back for Valleys Rovers as they drew with Carbery Rangers in the PSFC relegation playoff. In the PIFC decider to avoid the drop, Pa Lucey nailed the key penalty as Macroom survived for the third year running after a 10-point comeback against Bandon. Lucey also clipped a remarkable five two-pointers from placed balls. We also pay tribute to Patrick Horgan after he called time on his Cork hurling career after 18 seasons. What does it mean for the Rebels in 2026, in terms of free-takers, attacking line-up and experience in the squad. There's a preview of next weekend's hurling semi-finals, toplined by Sars-Barrs and Blackrock-Midleton. In Senior A, Bride Rovers contest their fifth consecutive semi. Has their time finally come? Now in its third season, every week Éamonn Murphy will be joined by The Echo team, including Barry O'Mahony, Denis Hurley, Rory Noonan, Jack McKay, John Horgan and more to discuss all the latest Cork GAA news on and off the field. You can listen to the Echo Sport Podcast every week wherever you get your podcasts or on www.echolive.ie/podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Newcestown shook up the Premier Senior Football Championship in Cork after beating three-in-a-row chasing Castlehaven in the last group game.Jim O'Sullivan's side secured their first victory over the Haven at senior level with a strong finish as Tadhg Twomey and David Buckley shared 0-10 between them. It means Newcestown now face Carrigaline for a place in the semi-finals while Castlehaven must get past their great rivals St Finbarr's.Two from Newcestown, Carrigaline, Duhallow and Ballincollig will be in the last four, though Nemo Rangers were the big winners over the weekend as their hammering of St Michael's granted them top seed on scoring difference. The Barrs shot the lights out themselves on Sunday with the major news afterward that ace marksman Steven Sherlock will rejoin the Cork panel for 2026, having opted out this season. Sherlock only started two of Cork's 13 games in his last year in Rebel red but will surely be a key figure for John Cleary's side now he's back, especially as his kicking ability is well suited to the new rules. He even landed a two-point sideline at Páirc Uí Rinn against Carrigaline.Nemo's marquee forward Mark Cronin grabbed 1-7 against Michael's and it'll be interesting to see him link up with Sherlock next season.Another brilliant forward Cathail O'Mahony grabbed 1-6 for Mitchelstown at Intermediate A level in a winner-takes-all derby with Kildorrery. Kiskeam qualified to the PIFC quarter-final after just their first championship win in two years against Castletownbere.St Nick's powered straight into the Premier Junior semis after finishing the group stages with eight goals scored and none conceded, though Buttevant are the team to beat in that grade. There were plenty of contenders for Club Footballer of the Weekend, including Kiskeam's David Scannell, Newcestown's Tadhg Twomey, Éire Óg keeper Chris Kelly made some big saves and kicked 0-5, and Aghabullogue's Luke Casey. He clipped 1-4 from play against Aghada, less than 24 hours after helping Coachford soccer team to a victory over Ringmahon Rangers at Turner's Cross. It's a huge weekend on the club hurling front and we pick out the matches to catch in the various grades. In this episode, I sit down with Jen Vaughan (Vocals), Darren O'Keeffe (Rhythm Guitar) and Scott McGowan (Lead Guitar) of the band with Mike Jordan (Bass) & Barry English (Drums) making up the rest of Shadows Calling, one of Ireland's most exciting rising bands blending alt-rock, grunge, and metal into a sound entirely their own. We dive into how the band came together—born during the 2020 lockdown as the brainchild of Mitchelstown native Darren O'Keeffe. He began writing original material for the first time and teamed up with his sister Jen Vaughan, a seasoned frontwoman with 20+ years in the music industry. Darren later discovered Cork guitarist Scott McGowan through an online musicians' platform, igniting the dual-guitar foundation that drives the band's hard-hitting sound. Their debut EPs, Spirit Shifter and These Scars, showcase their raw energy, collaborative songwriting, and genre-blending edge. All lyrics are co-written by Darren and Scott, with music crafted collectively by the entire band. We also talk about the creative process behind both EPs—produced and mixed by John Murphy (For Ruin) and mastered by Marco Tervonen of The Crown (Sweden)—plus stunning artwork by Colin Bolger (Spirit Shifter) and Giulia Benvenuti (These Scars). From studio sessions and live tour reactions to Jen's perspective as a female vocalist in metal and what 2025 has in store, this episode is packed with insight, passion, and authenticity.

The divsion look unbeatable right now but Sars are going for consecutive doubles. It'll be Blarney versus Glen Rovers at Senior A as the favourites lived up to their billing but only after two armwrestles in the Páirc.Carrigaline showed their fortitude to stave off a Ballincollig comeback in PIHC and Denis Walsh's St Catherine's are back in the Premier Junior decider. I play solo at Hugh O'Neill's in Malden, and several shows with my bandmates, The Boston Harbor Bhoys (Waltham Sr. Center, Medford's Ford Tavern, Framingham Elks fundraiser, Quincy's Assembly, and Boston's Green Dragon). So many songs, so many memories. I loved playing Hugh O'Neill's, where a table of young people requested The Saw Doctor's "N17" and ran out from their tables on the refrain each time to shout out "and the grass is green!". To the Sr Center in Waltham where the ENTIRE room of 100 people got all the hand - claps right on "Wild Rover" by the 2nd refrain, and the beautiful emotions expressed from our rendition of Danny Boy. To guests at the Framingham elks getting up to do all the dance moves to "The unicorn song", to seeing old fans from the South Shore of Boston that we haven't seen in 4 years requesting "Raglan Road", to jumping around The Green Dragon with my harmonica and tambourine leading hand claps on 'Finnegan's Wake" getting the whole bar clapping together. Agh, it was all so wonderful, went through a range of song styles and eras in the Celtic music catalogue, and it was wonderful connecting with audiences from the 20's up to their 90's, who all appreciated the music and experience in their own ways. It was one for the books! “

This, they endeavoured to do, by way of a series of internationally commissioned case studies on grand plans that have been shown to work, asking how they worked and why. In this series Sam Stafford explores with Lucy and Ian three of those case studies. In this episode, in a conversation recorded remotely at the end of November 2022, Sam and Lucy to Jim Steer about Dublin, to which, by common consensus, town planning in the 1960s and 1970s was not kind, with large-scale road building to serve car-dependent suburbs and little investment in public transport. €30m Investment into “Important” Cork Renewable Gas Facility

Gas Networks Ireland has announced the construction of Ireland's first large-scale renewable gas injection facility, starting in summer 2023. Gas Networks Ireland CEO Cathal Marley is due to outline the Green Renewable Agricultural Zero Emissions (GRAZE) renewable gas project, which involves the construction of a central grid injection (CGI) facility in Mitchelstown, county Cork. The CGI facility will process biomethane, a renewable gas made of farm and food waste, from up to 20 local farm producers. Using a process called anaerobic digestion, the waste will be converted into a gas that is fully compatible with existing Irish gas networks, vehicles, and other technologies. Mr Marley said: “Ireland's national gas network must be repurposed to transport renewable biomethane and hydrogen at scale. Gas Networks Ireland is uniquely placed to deliver the necessary change, and with projects such as GRAZE, we're already working hard to help deliver Ireland's sustainable energy future.” This biomethane could be used in industry, transport, home heating, and power generation, with a plethora of other potential. As biomethane is carbon neutral, it can significantly reduce emissions when replacing other forms of natural gas. Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, said: “This project shows how we can diversify our gas supplies, by speeding up the roll-out of renewable gases like biomethane. Projects such as this will reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels, which is especially important now in the context of the war in Ukraine. “The Government's National Energy Security Framework, which sets out how Ireland is prepared to deal with potential shocks to our energy system, has highlighted the need for alternatives to natural gas, such as biomethane and hydrogen, to be developed to enhance Ireland's security of supply and provide additional diversification for Ireland's energy mix”, he added. This process can also help support net-zero goals in the Irish agri-food sector. The agriculture-heavy Golden Vale area surrounding Mitchelstown is an ideal place to begin this project. Mr Ryan said: “A domestic biomethane industry would not only support the decarbonisation of the agricultural sector, but it would also provide significant opportunities for rural communities and facilitate sustainable circular economies, with businesses powering their operations via renewable gas made from their own waste.” “It will contribute to our broader climate goals – of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 51% by 2030 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050”, added Mr Ryan. At a maximum capacity, the facility will be able to meet the energy requirements of up to 64,000 homes. Mr Marley said that the rollout of biomethane energy would lead to “up to 6,500 jobs” being created, primarily in rural parts of Ireland. GNI is also currently in the process of advancing plans to add hydrogen to its network in the future. While the Irish gas network currently has no hydrogen, it is believed blends of up to 20% hydrogen could be transported along existing gas lines. It is hoped that by 2040 Ireland could be connected to the new European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) network. If successful, the GRAZE project could be replicated in other locations around Ireland. The project is supported by the Climate Action Fund, which has given it more than €8.4 million in funding as part of the Government's National Energy Security Framework. The Climate Action Plan has set a target of around 3% of Ireland's gas usage to be replaced by biomethane before 2030. The EU Green Deal has pointed out biomethane as a valuable tool in decarbonising European agriculture and energy, with Ireland highlighted as having the highest biomethane production potential per capita in Europe due to its large agricultural sector.
