Inte Gloerich is a critical media and technology researcher, and a colleague at the Institute of Network Cultures. She is one of the core people behind the research community MoneyLab. Inte also just finished a PhD on feminist blockchain imaginaries. We discuss blockchain beyond the hype, and beyond the wish to get rich fast. How can blockchain be a tool for radical imagination and decentralised autonomous organising in the arts? We discuss concepts and dilemma's, and briefly revisit what's left of the NFT boom, but we mainly dive into the practices of contemporary DAOs, from Dayra, to Black Swan, The Sphere, Circles, and CultureStake. What works? What doesn't work? How? And why? Art in Permacrisis is a podcast of the Institute of Network Cultures and Caradt on the organization of art workers in the face of the ever-growing stack of crises. It is hosted by Sepp Eckenhaussen with tech support by Tommaso Campagna. This episode was edited by Salome Berdzenishvili. Just 40 minutes, along with a fair bit of research, with Gabrielle Bond (pictured), the woman behind the Modern Money Lab at Adelaides Torrens University, changed, no, exploded my views about economic ideas, particularly those of Federal Government deficits. Gabrielle is an enthusiast of the Modern Money Theory (MMT) and an ardent supporter of her contemporary from the university, Assistant Professor Steven Hail, who explained MMT through an article in The Conversation, entitled, "Explainer: what is modern monetary theory?". In that article, he discussed one of MMT's pioneers, Professor Bill Mitchell, who has long explored the workings and application of the Modern Monetary Theory. Of course, the real modern hero of MMT is U.S. economist, Stephanie Kelton, who can be seen in this TEDx talk "The big myth of government deficits" and again in this "Stony Brook University Presidential Lecture Series". My journey to interview Gabrielle began when I listened to Professor Kelton in Melbourne, where she talked about many things, including the movie "Finding the Money". It was in 2021 that reporter Gareth Hutchins wrote a story for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) entitled: "Modern Monetary Theory: How MMT is challenging the economic establishment". --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/robert-mclean/message

In this episode I spoke to Geert Lovink, a Dutch media theorist and founder of the Institute of Network Cultures who has been engaged with internet culture since at least the 80s. We were recently together in Cyprus for the latest installment of MoneyLab,  which he also co-founded. Talking with him was a great way to gain more understanding and context of venture capital's control of the internet and the influence of that on social movements and alternative economies. During the interview we discussed his experience and history of the growth of the internet, the rise of crypto, and tactical media as a strategy for the left. One of the things that we noted was that the question of how the left needs to build its own autonomous infrastructure was one already being explored in the 90s by activists. If you liked the podcast be sure to give it a review on your preferred podcast platform. We're all trapped. No matter how hard you try to delete apps from your phone, the power of seduction draws you back. Doom scrolling is the new normal of a 24/7 online life. What happens when your home office starts to feel like a call center and you're too fried to log out of Facebook? We're addicted to large-scale platforms, unable to return to the frivolous age of decentralized networks. How do we make sense of the rising disaffection with the platform condition? Zoom fatigue, cancel culture, crypto art, NFTs and psychic regression comprise core elements of a general theory of platform culture. Geert Lovink argues that we reclaim the internet on our own terms. Stuck on the Platform: Reclaiming the Internet (Valiz 2022) is a relapse-resistant story about the rise of platform alternatives, built on a deep understanding of the digital slump. Geert Lovink is a Dutch media theorist, internet critic and author of Uncanny Networks (2002), Dark Fiber (2002), My First Recession (2003), Zero Comments (2007), Networks Without a Cause (2012), Social Media Abyss (2016), Organisation after Social Media (with Ned Rossiter, 2018) and Sad by Design (2019). In 2004 he founded the Institute of Network Cultures at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA). His center organizes conferences, publications and research networks such as Video Vortex (online video), The Future of Art Criticism and MoneyLab (internet-based revenue models in the arts). Recent projects deal with digital publishing experiments, critical meme research, participatory hybrid events and precarity in the creative sector. In December, 2021 he was appointed Professor of Art and Network Cultures at the Art History Department, Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam for one day a week. In this week's episode, we're catching up with the 6-figure houseplant blogger, Raffaele Di Lallo of OhioTropics.com. You might remember Raffaele from a blog coaching episode we did last year with the help of Matt Giovanisci from Money Lab. At that time, Raffaele was generating over 300,000 pageviews per month, which translated into around $10k in income, mostly from display ads and a little slice of affiliate commissions as well. The biggest change since I last spoke to Raffaele is that he's been able to leave his day job and now works on his blog full-time. In this episode, we focus on that core of the business and what made that possible: creating SEO-friendly content and monetizing it on autopilot with ads. Tune in to The Side Hustle Show interview to hear: how Raffaele's business has changed from last year some of his best tips for optimizing content for higher ad RPMs how Raffaele has doubled down on what's driving the most revenue Full show notes

Welcome to episode 123 of Activist #MMT - podcast. Today's part two of my two-part conversation with Steven Hail, discussing the new and unprecedented graduate program in economics of sustainability. The program, which starts in September 2022, will be run by Torrens University, is backed by Modern Money Lab, and is primarily developed by Steven and Australia's leading ecological economist, Phil Lawn. Last week in part one, Steven talked about how the program came to be, the resistance to be expected from neoclassical economics departments, and the basics of ecological economics. Today, he gives an overview of the program's curriculum, and the various degrees a student can pursue. I'm determined to earn a masters degree. After that then, well, we'll see. Before we begin, a minor clarification: Near the end, I say my studies with Asad Zaman might be worthy of an elective. Although integrating a course into the curriculum I think would be great (and I believe to actually much more unique than is currently available), I only mean getting a potential credit for myself, for independent study. If you like what you hear, then I hope you might consider becoming a monthly patron of Activist #MMT. Patrons have exclusive access to several full-length episodes, right now. A full list is here, each with a brief highlight. Patrons also get the opportunity to ask my academic guests questions, such as my recent episode with Warren Mosler. They also support the development of my large and growing collection of learn MMT resources. To become a patron, you can start by going to patreon.com/activistmmt. Welcome to episode 123 of Activist #MMT. Today I talk with Australian MMT economist Steven Hail, about the new and unprecedented graduate program in economics of sustainability. The program, which starts in September 2022, will be run by Torrens University, is backed by Modern Money Lab, and is primarily developed by Steven and Australia's leading ecological economist, Phil Lawn. (Here's a link to part two. A list of the audio chapters in this episode can be found at the bottom of this post.) Today in part one, Steven talks about how the program came to be, the potential resistance expected from the classical economics departments, and the basics of ecological economics. Next week in part two, Steven gives an overview of the curriculum and potential degrees students can pursue, from a graduate diploma to a PhD. Until now, this podcast has served as my way to give myself, as close as possible, the education I convinced I would never be able to return to. This is because of the potential cost, student debt (again!), and the impossibility of forsaking income and uprooting my family. I have two little boys, my wife has a job as an elementary school teacher, and we just purchased our first home in summer 2021. Torrens changes everything. At $2,200 of course (given the current AUS-US exchange rate), it's expensive, but an entire degree at Torrens is about the cost of a single year in the predatory education system in the United States. Also, Torrens provides online access for those outside of Australia, recording the lectures for those whose time zones and work hours are incompatible with an in-person schedule. This makes it possible for anyone, anywhere, with any work schedule, to take any and all of these courses. Direct in-person interaction with professors and fellow students will be scheduled multiple times each week, and there's always direct access to administrators when needed. Needless to say, I am very excited. You can find out more about the economics of sustainability graduate program in Torrens by going to modernmoneylab.org.au/courses/. Finally, before we begin, I want to clarify: I very clumsily asked a question which Steven understandably misunderstood. What I mean to say was: Con (Costa) Michalakis is the second wealthy person that I'm aware of, to care enough about MMT, to use his own resources – and to encourage those in his network to pool theirs – in order to further develop and spread MMT. (I also meant to say that the truly elite benefit from the masses not understanding how the economy works.) And now, onto my conversation with Steven Hail. Enjoy. Resources Both these links are available via the courses website. Modern Money Lab and Torrens University "Economics for a new era" brochure. Fill out this form to express your interest in the program. Audio chapters 5:25 - Half time zones 5:43 - How Torrens came to be (Con Michalakis and Stephanie Kelton) 20:24 - Con Michalakis 21:56 - Second wealthy person wants to help with MMT (clumsily stated) Question 23:33 - MMT is popular in the finance sector 24:16 - The Australian superannuation (retirement) system. 27:02 - There is resistance in some quarters- mainstream economic profession (especially academia) 30:18 - Mainstream economics is replete with myths 33:25 - Putting a price on carbon as the EXTENT of government action 34:14 - A very brief introduction to ecological economics 42:27 - Torrens' curriculum, and how it overlaps with the knowledge of moderately experienced laypeople 48:15 - Duplicate of introduction, but with no background music

The Beautiful Climb with Michelle Knight

We all have a money story. I personally didn't even know what that meant until I started my business in 2016. Everyone was talking about this “money story” like it was something I needed to be super aware of. Turns out they were 100% correct, but it took me years to really do the deep work necessary to uncover my money story, own it for what it was and rewrite it. That's the thing about entrepreneurship it's a fast track in personal development. But entrepreneurs aside, our money stories, often what we are taught or pick up on at a young age shape our everyday decisions around money. It impacts our mindset in the grocery store. How we save or spend. How we view others and how we think others might view us. My friend Wei, from The Money Lab podcast, recently interviewed me on his show about my money story and how I've rewritten it to be one of Freedom over Security. This interview was too good not to share with you! So this week on The Beautiful Climb podcast I'm rereleasing this interview as a special episode all about money. Tune in to Episode 26, of the podcast to hear: How my money story is one of the most “typical” types of money experiences and how it affects us as we get older. The exact moments in my life when I began to question my existing money story and what I did about it in order to create the life I have today. How growing up with a desire for security changed into one created around freedom and how my money story has evolved over the years.
