If you've been trying to grow your business online with YouTube but haven't quite cracked the code, you've tuned into the right episode. My guest today is Matt Giovanisci, the founder of Swim University, Brew Cabin, and Money Lab. In this episode, Matt shares some of his best strategies for growing a YouTube channel and building your email list from your video content. We also dig into his entrepreneurial journey and the lessons he's learned along the way.
If I could tell myself in 2004 what I know now in 2023, I would've avoided burnout and built a successful, six-figure online business in half time it actually took. 2004 The Idea: Look, here's the plan. You're gonna buy this domain, but you won't do jack shit with it. Then you'll have to re-buy it for a higher price in a few years. So buy the domain and use it ASAP. Build the site using WordPress. Keep the design clean and make sure it loads really fast. 2009: The Blackhat SEO Phase: Don't waste time building shitty backlinks to your shitty articles and don't use anything called Unique Article Wizard. All you have to do is write the best articles on pool care and publish them consistently. 2011: The First YouTube Video: You need to make at least one video a week. Publish consistently. Try different video styles. You don't need to be near a pool. Don't give up on YouTube. Every week. 2013: The Podcast: Just keep writing articles and making videos. And stop making those infographics. They don't work in the future. Your podcast won't be huge, but it'll be rewarding. Just stay focused on what your business does well. 2016: The Software Phase: Software will NEVER be your thing. You'll attempt to create and sell software over the next few years and fail every time. All of that time would be better spent working on Swim University. And now Roasty and Brew Cabin. 2017: The Airport: There was 2017 Matt staring down at his phone on the verge of tears. He must've just read the Amazon email saying commissions were getting cut to the bone. 2004: The Future: You're gonna make money selling banner ads and putting affiliate links on your site. But the most lucrative thing you'll do is create and sell your own products. Stay in your wheelhouse. Write articles, produce videos and design graphics. In 2013, you will create an e-book on how to take care of a hot tub. You won't know it, but that'll be the most important moment in your business. Just build your website on WordPress, make it load fast, do some keyword research, and publish articles and videos around them. Then, make a few digital products, like ebooks and video courses. Promote them on every page. Make this your focus and treat affiliate commissions as a bonus. If you do this consistently, you'll be successful in about 4 years or less.

What's the best way to discover a profitable niche? Find something you already enjoy or have a good amount of knowledge about. Most people hate this advice.I suspect they want a different answer. They're looking for the undiscovered niche to help them get rich quickly. There are no tricks or secrets to uncovering a profitable niche or topic for your business.Everyone has an interest. That's your niche.Everyone knows a lot about one topic. That's your niche.Every niche can be profitable. The variable is not the topic; it's the person creating the business. The Fastest Way to Discover a Profitable NicheI've been practicing this technique since 2008. And it's the simplest exercise in the world.NOTE: Don't use a computer. Get a notebook or piece of paper and a pen. You must do this exercise by hand. No typing. I'll explain why later. Sit down for 5 minutes in every room in your home. Write down every significant product you see. Group products into obvious categories Cross out the dumb categories you know you'll never build a business around. Highlight categories that you could easily write about with no research. After performing this exercise, there will probably be only 1-3 ideas. If there are more, you're lying to yourself. Repeat steps four and five. You should now have your niche. No research is required. And there's an important reason not to open your computer during this exercise…Analysis Paralysis: The Reason You Struggle to Pick a NicheIf you follow my analog method of finding a niche, you'll want to research to see if there are good keywords. But I strongly urge you not to do that. This is exactly why you're struggling to pick a niche. You can research to uncover a “secret” niche or choose a familiar niche (using my analog method). But both paths can lead to two outcomes: insufficient keywords or too many (and therefore “saturated”).Researching a niche will kill your confidence. It might not, but I wouldn't take that chance. When I started my coffee website, I purposely didn't research shit. I knew that if I did, I would be discouraged. And as a result, do absolutely nothing.Broad Brand, Narrow NicheAnother way to avoid struggle is to go wide with your brand. I see too many first-time entrepreneurs box themselves into a corner.Your brand doesn't have to be the niche. It doesn't have to be anything. It can be nonsense. The niche doesn't need to be part of the domain name. Domains don't matter for SEO anymore. They haven't for a long time.Think about Amazon. That word has NOTHING to do with selling everything in the world. It's just a word. But now you know exactly what they do.Amazon is a broad brand that started with a narrow niche: books.Once they mastered selling books, they expanded into other niches or categories. You can do the same thing.I have a niche site around the topic of homebrewing beer. I named the brand BREW Cabin. Not BEER Cabin. Why?I gave myself room to expand the brand. I can discuss brewing coffee, tea, kombucha, whiskey, and witch potions. There Are NO Saturated NichesThink your niche is saturated? You're wrong. Nothing's saturated. If your market is “saturated,” doesn't that imply there's more juice to squeeze? You must carve out a space to stand out. And the best way to do that is to be your fucking self. Get started now and develop your voice.Write your own content. You can always hire later when you earn enough money to afford a writer. The first niche site I ever started was Swim University in 2006. I still run it today. It was something I knew because it was my first summer job. It wasn't sexy or “profitable.” It wasn't a secret undiscovered niche through keyword research.I wasn't the first to start a pool website, and I won't be the last. It was saturated then, and it's saturated now.And yet I'm still doing it.You're procrastinating because you want to be 100% sure your idea will work. You don't want to be wrong or waste years of your life. But remember…It's not the topic; it's the person creating the business. You'll be the only reason it doesn't work. You must be willing to invest time and money to make it work.“There are no bad ideas; only great ideas that go horribly wrong.”– Jack Donaghy (30 Rock)The 4-Year Profitable Business PlanDespite what lying marketing gurus tell you, building a business takes a long time. You won't be an overnight success. You won't make money fast. The stories you've read are probably bullshit or extreme outliers. Take them with a big ass grain of salt.I've witnessed thousands of people building businesses around me. And there's one thing I've noticed…It takes most people about four years to make good money with their online business. They must learn, try, and fail until they finally get it right. It's the nature of the beast.Think of it like getting a college degree. But instead, you make money instead of going into debt.I'd take that trade any day.In other words, you have to stay focused on one thing to gain traction. The Power of One: Protect Yourself Against Shiny Object SyndromeThings were moving too slowly when I first started my website in 2006. I wasn't making money fast enough. So I started 10 more niche sites.Instead of putting all my eggs in one basket, I'd hedge my bets. Increase my chances of one of them paying off. It's diversifying! Sounds smart, right? This is considered good advice in some circles. Let me be straight with you: it's the worst fucking advice you'll ever hear. The better way forward is committing to a single brand, one niche, and diversifying your revenue streams.Stick with any niche long enough and give it your best shot. I promise it'll pay off.Once it pays off, you can scale by adding more niches and revenue streams to your broad brand. The Perfect Niche Was Inside You All AlongYour profitable niche is right in front of you. You already know it. The reason you're struggling is that you don't believe in it.But let me tell you. I've been doing this shit forever. It doesn't matter which topic you choose.I could take any item in my home and turn it into a website or brand. Because I spent 20 years working on ONE niche.I picked it and fucking did it.And I can teach you to do it in way less time. But I can't help you pick a niche. You have to do that yourself. Only you know yourself.I can help you brand it. I can help you do keyword research. I can help you monetize. And if you want to move on to something else, I can help you sell it.I've done all these things. Join Money Lab Pro to get access to all my business training and a community of like-minded entrepreneurs building long-term businesses just like you.The most important part about building a long-lasting business is caring more about your niche than your competitors. You'll win every time.Business Stick-to-itivenessThat's how you discover a profitable niche in 5 minutes. My goal with this is to convince you to go for it.You will doubt yourself. You'll second guess your decision all the time. But that's normal. What's abnormal is sticking with it. 99% of people won't do this. And they fail. However, if you stick with it, you can't fail. Keep learning, keep growing, and keep getting better. You'll have a successful long-term business.Hope this was helpful. Now stop reading, stop procrastinating, pick a goddamn niche already, and build something worth consuming.

Matt Giovanisci is a successful entrepreneur that has created an enterprise through creative affiliate marketing websites. He is the founder of Money Lab, Swim University and Brew Cabin. He says he challenges himself to "make money online and ignoring all the online marketing bullshit." I first discovered Matt through an affiliate marketing workshop he did on Brian Clark's membership program. I was instantly impressed with Matt's style and his approach to online business. More importantly, I realized that everything I thought I knew about affiliate marketing was wrong. This is real business that makes real money. What plugins does he use? What are his systems? How does he do SEO research. Why does he create and lay out his content like he does? And so much more.
I had the opportunity to interview Matt Giovanisci, and I’m excited to share a few highlights from our interview with you. Matt started a niche website 15 years ago called Swim University, where he posts a lot of “how-to” content related to pool maintenance. I came across the website a while back and used it in a case study for Brand Creators Academy. I also mentioned Swim University, and it’s success in a recent podcast a few weeks ago. I received an email from Matt after the podcast was published, offering to come on as a guest to tell his story and answer any questions that I have. I’m happy that he was able to join us on the podcast and can’t wait for him to share with you all the ins and outs of his business, how he’s found success, and a few things that didn’t work out so well along the way. Let’s dive right in and learn a few things from Matt about the process of how he got started and has since built multiple successful businesses. How Swim University Was Born Swim University has over 5 million visitors a year. As a seasonal website, we get over 1 million visitors each month between May-July and between 300,000-500,000 visitors during the other months of the year. When I was 13, I got a job at a local pool supply store where I worked my up to become a manager before I graduated high school. Over the next several years, I worked for a couple of other pool supply companies before pursuing a job at a web design company. I had taught myself how to code and design websites, but after a few months on the job, I realized that’s not what I wanted to do, so I went back to the largest of the three pool companies I had worked at in the past and become their marketing director. Around this same time, I decided I wanted to build a website where I could teach people how to maintain their own pools. I knew all about affiliate marketing and AdSense, so I figured it was time to get started. I built the site for Swim University in 2006. I got a logo created to add to my site and still use the same one today. At the time, I used an alias, Matthew Stevens, since I was writing all the articles myself and making all the video tutorials I included on my site. I had a job opportunity to work with Martha Stewert’s team on a project related to Swim University, and at that time, I decided to change my name on the site to Matt Giovanisci. My boss eventually found my site, and I was fired. I spent two additional years at another company (non-pool related) before they had to let me go due to the condition of the company’s financial situation. I knew it was coming a couple of months in advance and decided at that moment that I would make Swim University my full-time job if I did get laid off. It had been a side hustle for over seven years up until this point. How Swim University Become Matt’s Full-Time Focus At the time, I was making around $10,000 or so a year from affiliate links and ads that I had on my site. Most of them were from pool companies and other related products that I had sold directly because I wanted to make sure all the content on my site was relevant to pool maintenance. I was getting somewhere around 25,000 visitors a month, and my goal was to make $40,000 a year from Swim University. After I lost my job, I spent an entire year dedicated to growing Swim University. I focused on publishing content, creating YoutTube videos, graphic design, infographics, and dabbled in a few other projects along the way, and by the end of the year, I was making over $40,000 a year, and it’s just grown from there over the years. Matt’s Defining Take Action Moment I was in a band back when I had just purchased the domain for Swim University. At the time, I talked a lot about the website and how I was going to make it a huge success. After a couple of years, one of my friends in the band finally told me to stop talking about it and just go out and do it. He told me that he didn’t think I’d ever actually make it work. I thrive off negative motivation, so this was just the fuel I needed to get started. I was shamed into starting Swim University in a sense. If I’m told I can’t do something or it’s a stupid idea, it gives me the motivation to see things through and prove that person wrong. So I’m grateful to my friend for giving me the drive I needed to finally get started. My single guiding star is I will never work for anyone else ever again. I’ve come to realize that everyone has their own area of expertise, and for many managing a team isn’t one of them, and I just dont ever want to work under anyone ever again. However, in the pursuit of working for myself, I’ve learned useful skill sets that would keep me from ever being unemployed in the future if I ever needed something to fall back on. Note From Scott: The skills that you’ve learned, whether in a previous job or learning to start your own business, can be used in future ventures. Guiding Principles Matt Follows I’ve come to realize that in every venture I’ve taken on, I’ve had to learn new skill sets to get me to a level of success. For Swim University, I had to forcefully learn to create “how-to” content that goes above and beyond anything else out there. I’m not a natural-born business person have spent years learning how to improve my skills. I don’t ever do anything just to make money. Instead, I focus on things I enjoy doing and learning new things. By paying extra attention to details it makes my content stand the test of time. For me, the code for Swim University’s website was really important. I paid attention to all the micro details and created all the code myself. I wanted to make sure that everything was up to high-standards and creates a positive experience for anyone who visits. Every year, I go in and update the content to keep it fresh and up to date. How I Create Content For My Website Personally, I enjoy editing content more than free form writing. When I have to sit down and write an article, I start by writing the first draft, editing it, and then going back in to add in-jokes, reorganize paragraphs to better fit the story arcs, and taking it to a whole new lever before I deem it complete. How I write content is similar to how I build a website and always pay attention to the micro details. It took me many years to find someone to help write content for my website. I didn’t think anyone out there could write articles good enough for Swim University, especially if they didn’t have as much experience as me in the pool space. I now have an editor who manages all the content for Swim University, and I answer to her. She sets the rules. Our other team members include a videographer, graphic designer, and a customer service manager. I keep my team lean, and it works great for us. How I Get Eye Balls on My Content One of the reasons Swim University does so well is because it’s fast and lean. I know how to format articles using the proper tags, how to do data schema, and have done the research to know what Google wants the data format to be like. I make sure to find a balance of giving the robots want they want while creating content that people will be interested in reading. If you want to have a successful business, make sure that you’re website is easy to load, maneuver, and the content is structured in a way that Google can easily read. The Most Important Elements of a Blog Post How quickly it loads (WP rocket is a great free plugin) Basic Formatting (in my opinion popups are distractions and slow down a site) Each paragraph should be 2-3 sentences max H2 tags should be descriptive and keyword friendly The focus should be on answering a question and not the length of a post Make it creative and entertaining to encourage people to keep reading The fundamentals are most important, so there’s no need to go out and complicate things. My goal for every piece of content that I write is to make it bookmark worthy. I want it to be so good that someone wants to save it to read later or shares it with someone else. Matt’s New WordPress Plugin - Lasso I’ve been working on a new plugin that I’ve actually had on my own site for over four years. It makes it possible to select a specific keyword in your article and add an affiliate link to all instances of that particular keyword. It also allows you to create a display box that shows all the information for your affiliate products and makes them stand out. Note from Scott: Head over to brandcreators.com/lasso to check out the details of Matt’s new plugin and all the awesome features it has to offer. Now is the Time to Get Started If you have a business idea or something you’d like to try out, start now. You’ll learn as you go along, and at first, it’ll be a huge learning curve. But you’ll learn, grow and improve as time goes on. Stop measuring everything you do. Instead, be present and enjoy the moment. If you want to connect with me or check out any of my latest projects, head over to moneylab.co. Wrap Up With Scott Hopefully, what Matt shared with you today has left you feeling inspired and motivated to go out and take action. I love Matt’s story as it’s similar to mine in a sense. We both started out learning a trade and went out and used those experiences to go out and create something of our own. When you take action you’ll see the best results and will improve new skill sets that you learn along the way. Remember, consistency pays off. It takes time but is definitely worth it. Always be in the present, be a giver and give it you’re all. Life is too short not to do something that you love and are passionate about. Remember, I’m here for you, I believe in you and I’m rooting for you It’s time for you to go out and take action Now go rock your brand! 4 Takeaways From The Episode How Swim University Was Born (9:04) Matt’s Defining Take Action Moment (26:45) Guiding Principles Matt Follows Today (32:30) Now is the Time to Get Started (56:39)

How To Create Original and Engaging Landing Pages + Insights into Affiliate Marketing. My name is Matt Giovanisci. I'm self-employed and work from home. But it's nothing special. I wake up whenever I want, put my sweatpants on one leg at a time, and tell my butler to make me an egg soufflé just like everyone else. Ok, I don't have a butler. I started a website in 2006 called Swim University. The site now makes over $250,000 a year but it took 10 years. I co-founded a personal finance brand and podcast called Listen Money Matters in 2013. I left after a year, but I re-joined in 2018. In March 2015, I started a coffee education website called Roasty. I sold it in 2018 for $55,000. I created Money Lab (this site) in 2016 so I can build more brands, make more money, and write off my home-brewing hobby. Speaking of which, I started a homebrewing site called Brew Cabin. I design and code all my own sites by hand. Write the words. Film and edit the videos. Produce podcasts. Illustrate the graphics. But now I have a team that helps me with writing and editing podcasts. In case that wasn't enough. https://www.moneylab.co/

Ep #83 -Matt Giovanisci, the creator of the website Swim University and the founder of MoneyLab.co, joins Jusitn Womack and Andros Sturgeon this week for a fun and in-depth conversation on all things digital marketing. We had first heard about Matt Giovanisci from a viral email "stunt" that he pulled a few years back which I personally found hilarious and you can still view it at MoneyLab.co/email. We talk about the impetus behind this marketing campaign, how it impacted his business, and we even touch on the use of sarcasm in marketing. Matt is presently focused on affiliate marketing and has launched a new tool called Lasso which allows Wordpress users to create beautiful looking Amazon affiliate links right on their sites. Along with a business partner, Matt created this software from scratch and has now launched it as a cloud-based SAAS product at GetLasso.co. Beyond blogging, affiliate marketing, and email stunts, Matt also co-hosts the podcasts "MoneyLab" and "Listen Money Money Matters." Both of these shows have developed sizable audiences and provide tremendous value to listeners. Matt Giovanisci is a wealth of knowledge for online marketing and we had an absolute blast geeking out with him in today's Marketing Geeks Podcast interview. If you're interested in SEO, blogging, media, or podcasting, you're going to absolutely love this interview. Enjoy! School just wasn't Matt's thing. Like, ever. He hated school and, honestly, didn't do well in it. He gave college a try...twice, and it just wasn't for him—much to the disappointment of his father. But none of that slowed him down. Over 10 years ago, Matt started a blog all about swimming pool and hot tub care. And today Matt runs a small, but powerful business with properties like Swim University, Money Lab, and Lasso. The business as a whole is set to do nearly half-a-million dollars in revenue this year! Welcome back to the Niche Pursuits Podcast. I’m your host, Spencer Haws from nichepursuits.com. Today, I’ve got a returning guest. Matt Giovanisci from moneylab.co is back, and we talk about quite a few things. If you remember the last interview we did, which actually, as I look back, was an entire year ago, which is really hard to believe. We dove into a lot of his SEO tips and how just writing great content, trying to have a little bit better content, and specifically not doing a lot of link building has led to a lot of success for Matt with his swimuniversity.com site. Today, we talk about a little bit more about Swim University and specifically, his dive into using YouTube and how his YouTube videos are doing quite well. But then we spend the bulk of the interview talking about his new software product called Lasso. Lasso is a product that manages your affiliate links and specifically, it does work well with Amazon affiliate links, although it works for any affiliate links. It helps you to better monetize your site and also has really cool product boxes that you can insert into your post that will help you sell more Amazon affiliate products—a product box for the product you’re selling on Amazon—really cool looking, with a nice button, and can help you monetize those posts. It’s a cool product. If you’re interested in checking it out, you can use my affiliate link at nichepursuits.com/lasso.
It’s not uncommon to feel that your business needs to do many different things to be profitable. Being able to offer all sorts of services or products sounds like it would lead to more opportunities. But without clarity on what you specifically offer, you’re just going to struggle more. Today’s guest has become wildly successful by being clear and specific in what his businesses really do. Matt Giovanisci is a serial entrepreneur, website wizard, podcast producer, music maker, video veteran, and alliteration addict. In 2006, he started the website Swim University and the site now makes over $250,000 a year! Since then, he co-founded a personal finance brand and podcast called Listen Money Matters. His current project, Money Lab, was started in 2016 to help brands grow and make more money. Matt and I discuss what it takes to refine your business savvy in order to turn an interest into a profitable business. Matt describes how he recognizes opportunities as they appear and always experiments with them as he goes along. Matt makes it clear that success comes easier when you are incredibly specific about what your business actually does. This clarity keeps you focussed on what it actually is that you do and defines your business better for your customers. We also talk about the freedom that comes from outsourcing. By setting up clear operating procedures and handing off the parts of the job you don’t need to be doing, you’ll find that you’ll have more opportunities to help your company grow. With that in mind, Matt explains how he’s done it for his businesses. What do you do to find clarity in your business? Leave a comment on the episode page! In this episode What it takes to turn an interest into an actual business Recognizing the potential in the different ideas and opportunities you have and deciding if they’re worth it The freedom that comes from being very specific and clear about what your business does Advice for how to effectively outsource parts of your business by building processes Quotes “You need to have focus and express your creativity within a certain boundary.” [11:17] “Once you get incredibly clear on what your business does, you can easily say no to everything else and then you can find opportunities in what your company does.” [22:16] “Now I don’t answer emails and every email becomes a soft sales pitch for our product. So now, not only do I not have to do it, we actually make money.” [56:05] “You’re not special. You might think you are and you might think you’re the only one and you’re going to care more, but if you give somebody enough leeway and ownership, they might out-care you one day.” [1:00:59] Links: Money Lab Swim University Brew Cabin Matt Wants to Be a Guest on Your Podcast Traction by Gino Wickman The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Today I am joined on the podcast by Matt Giovanisci who is an entrepreneur and creative with a wide range of skills which he has used to grow his website SwimUniversity.com into the top resource for pool and hot tub owners on the internet, which is how I actually first found him way back when I was still working as a lifeguard, and that’s a story we actually dive into on this episode. “Go big or go home, that's kinda my whole philosophy with SEO,” Matt said. And his results speak for themselves. Note: Click here to download Matt's top SEO tips for writing and ranking epic content from this episode. It's been more than 200 episodes since we last heard from Matt Giovanisci. Back then, Matt was explaining how he was growing his authority site SwimUniversity.com with epic content and strong SEO. Since then he's started 3 more authority sites and has fine-tuned his SEO practices for even bigger and quicker results. His latest site BrewCabin.com is just a few months old and Matt is already ranking well for high traffic “money” keywords – without building backlinks or promoting this content. How is he doing this? It's not through longtail keywords. Quite the opposite, Matt goes after those high traffic keywords and outranks his competitors by producing epic content that people want to read. Tune in to hear Matt explain how he does his keyword research, how he formats his content to ensure strong on-page SEO, and why he's seeing such rapid growth across all of his sites. Note: This is "round 2" of SEO for Bloggers. Round 1 was this conversation with Joseph Hogue last year.)

And his results speak for themselves. It’s been more than 200 episodes since we last heard from Matt Giovanisci. Back then, Matt was explaining how he was growing his authority site SwimUniversity.com with epic content and strong SEO. Since then he’s started 3 more authority sites and has fine-tuned his SEO practices for even bigger and quicker results. His latest site BrewCabin.com is just a few months old and Matt is already ranking well for high traffic “money” keywords – without building backlinks or promoting this content. How is he doing this? It’s not through longtail keywords. Quite the opposite, Matt goes after those high traffic keywords and outranks his competitors by producing epic content that people want to read. Tune in to hear Matt explain how he does his keyword research, how he formats his content to ensure strong on-page SEO, and why he’s seeing such rapid growth across all of his sites. Note: This is "round 2" of SEO for Bloggers. Round 1 was this conversation with Joseph Hogue last year.)
In 1982, Darlene, Andrew, and Bob all met at a night club. His mom was a cocktail waitress and his dad was a piano player, fast forward thirty two years and Matt has become an incredible resource to podcasters, an online marketing genius, and even a rapper. Besides the witty humor from Matt, Matt's real entrepreneurial journey started at the age 13. Growing up, Matt had several jobs. He got hired, got fired, got hired again, and even got fired again. He's been on unemployment, in hospitals beds with a foot injury, and even been in a rock bank. Some may think he's the jack of all trades, but what he master at is marketing. Matt's career didn't get serious until he created a pool supply blog called Swim University. It took him close to 10 years before seeing any true potential in the platform, but that didn't stop Matt from continuing to push through, until he saw the light. During his time in the pool industry, he not only worked with a pool supply company, Matt also learned how to develop websites. He used his knowledge and expertise to create not one, not two, but four online brands that make him the super marketer he is today. Today, Matt continues to work on Swim University, Roasted Coffee, and now his new project, Money Lab. Early on, one of Matt's biggest issues was his ability to write. "The first six years of Swim University was awful. I knew what I was doing and how to do it, but I didn’t know how to write. I was consuming information and knew I had this talent in marketing, but couldn't write for S***! I ended up making the website first, because I knew how to do that, and then tried to figure out what would work on the site itself." Said Matt. After asking Matt the question "How do you fare in this new world of marketing" Matt's response was: (Listen to the 21 minute mark.) "In a new age of marketing, I am more confident that I will get out there because I knows what it will take to get it in front of people." And boy did he do just that. The reason I asked Matt to be on the show was because I became a direct product of Matt's system. I was "marketed" to. The purpose of this article and the story I am writing about Matt isn't to give an idea on what works in marketing, it's more a story about inspiration. Matt kept at his work, went ALL in on his ideas, and stayed focused on the things that he was good at, all while developing new set of skills in the background. I'd like to tell you EXACTLY how I met Matt and how the new era of marketing is done: - First I googled "How to Market Your Podcast" - Then, I read the article. I used it as my damn bible. Reading it over and over again, and ultimately gave me the desire to reach out and thank the person who wrote it - I messaged the team at Money Lab on Facebook - Then, did my own research and found out who Matt was. - Saw he makes funny videos about marketing and even watched his rap video - Next, I went to Facebook, and randomly came across a landing page that said "Hire Me For Your Podcast!" - Filled out the contact form, scheduled a time to chat, a few months later. Here we are. Internet gold! - To learn more from Matt, watch the interview and learn how Matt wrote a whole marketing rap album and has got himself into places, many dream of. #Timestamp 1:10:- Beer, Six Pack of Black IPA, Senita’s Black IPA 02:30- Introduction 08:20 - 21:00- Early Struggles in his Business and How Matt Learned How to Get Traffic to His Sites 21:10- How to Get Traffic in a New World of Marketing and How I Found Matt 30:00- How to Promote Your Product/Service 32:00- Be Sincere, Write Good Content, and The World Will Reward You Matt Giovanisci Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mattgiovanisci Website: http://www.moneylab.co Twitter: https://twitter.com/mattgiovanisci Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mattgiovanisci Buy the album: http://www.moneylab.co/rap/

The thing that inspired me to reach out to Matt was a blog post he wrote about how much he hates all the bullsh*t buzzwords and egotistical fakery that seems to fill our industry. Sound familiar? Matt is the creator of SwimUniversity.com and a number of popular and funny rap videos. His new project is all about coffee. We hit it off right away and this was a really fun conversation. As much as it pains me to say it, there were a lot of takeaways as well, for those of who listen for that sort of thing. ;) As always, I had a great time talking to Matt. Enjoy the show! #008 - How do you build a online brand that stands out in an industry or niche that most people considering "boring"? Think personal finance, law, anything technical like engineering or math, and home improvement, etc. Well today's guest on the podcast, Matt Giovanisci, has built his audience and business around swimming pool and hot tub care through his YouTube videos for Swim University. (Some of which, like "How To Change The Sand In Your Sand Filter", have hundreds of thousands of views.) In this episode I chat with Matt about how he got into making videos online, what his process is for planning and shooting these videos, how makes sure he adds comedy into them, and how he got started without buying any gear.Items mentioned:Swim University - The Ultimate Guide to Pool & Hot Tub CareSwimUniversity - YouTubePool Care Rap Video - YouTubeThe Making of: Pool Rap Song - YouTubeListen, Money Matters - Manage your money like a badass."All My Money" Personal Finance Rap Video - YouTubeThe Making of "All My Money" - YouTubeInside the control room: turning NFL football into primetime television - YouTubeAmazon.com : Canon XA10 Professional CamcorderAmazon.com : Canon EOS 6D Digital SLR CameraAmazon.com: TASCAM DR-40 4-Track Portable Digital RecorderDown and Dirty Lighting Kit | Wistia Learning CenterNovember 7, 2014
Everybody's an expert in something, right? Well this week's guest, Matt Giovanisci, is an expert in pool care. He describes it as the most boring industry that serves such a fun product. He's taken an innovative approach to rank his site, SwimUniversity.com, in Google and monetize it with affiliate relationships and private advertising. I feel like Matt's process is proven and repeatable -- but takes real work.
Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes at Listen, Money Matters? Trust me. It’s as glamorous as you probably imagine it to be! No, it’s really not. Andrew started the LMM website while he was displaced by Hurricane Sandy. He wanted to share what he had learned about personal finance with others and one day make some money through sharing that knowledge. Matt and Andrew met in late 2013 on Fizzle, an online business training service and community. The two of them started out by advising each other on their respective projects, LMM and Swim University. It was a marriage made in heaven because each brought to the other, something that had been lacking. Andrew is the business guy and Matt is the creative guy. The two of them spent a lot of time on Skype. Andrew’s wife overheard all this discussion and said they should start a podcast. That’s how this podcast was born in November 2013! In the beginning there was a podcast a week. But you demanded more! So in May, LMM launched Money May, a podcast every single day. It was so successful that we decided to continue with a new episode daily. How do we manage to get out that many episodes when both your hosts have full time jobs? They discuss the topics on Tuesday evenings and batch record on Wednesdays. Andrew’s wife Laura or I contact and schedule guests that we find or that you all suggest. On Thursdays Matt edits each episode and creates the images that you see at the top of the posts. Matt sends them to me. I listen and write the show notes, what you’re reading now, insert relevant links and the Tweetables, schedule them to go live and there you go! What does the future hold for LMM? We would like to be your ultimate personal finance resource. If you need to know it, we want you to be able to find it on the site or in the podcast. If you feel intimidated or left out of the conversation on other personal finance sites, podcasts, or books, we want you to find a home here. A lot of that stuff is geared to a much older, already pretty savvy audience and we want to fill the gap for younger people or people just starting their personal finance journey no matter what their age. How do you make money? Well, we don’t really yet. How we don’t want to make money is from you. People who need help with their finances shouldn’t be put in a position to pay for that help. We feel that help should be made available to you at no cost. We want affiliates and sponsors to fund what we do for our listeners. A good example of an affiliate is Amazon. On Swim University, when Matt recommends a product with a link and a reader uses that link to buy that product, he gets a cut. That cut does not cost the buyer anything, Amazon pays that cut. A sponsorship is a company that pays to advertise on an episode. So we would ask a company like Mint or Ready for Zero to buy advertising on the podcast. The hope is to get enough of these sponsors to fund the show and allow Matt and Andrew to do LMM full time. What we can promise is that we won’t take the easy money. If you hear an ad for something, it’s something that we believe in and something that will help you. So that’s what really goes on behind the scenes and what we hope to do going forward. Thank you to all of you. We wouldn’t be able to do any of this without you. Show Notes Boulevard Brewing The Sixth Glass: A dark ale. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It’s time for listener questions. We’ll discuss stock earnings, home renovations, side hustles, emergency funds, and money for freelancers. 1. How does a company’s quarterly earnings report affect my stock? Yes, but it’s not just about whether the company made or lost money. The report also contains information about what is going on inside the company. So just because the company made money doesn’t necessarily guarantee a positive report. It’s more important to read the report and get a sense of what’s happening within the company than to just make decisions based strictly on numbers. 2. How do you do home improvement and landscaping on a budget? Plan and budget! Before you go crazy at the plant store, how many will you need, how much sun does your yard get? Repurpose things, good for your wallet and the environment. The most important thing is to do some of it yourself. Potting plants isn’t something you need a professional for. Re-wiring your home, you probably do. See what you can borrow from friends or neighbors. Don’t buy a tool that you’ll only use once. And you can be proud of the work you did to make your home nicer. 3. Are podcasting and blogging actually good side hustles to make extra money? They can be. LMM’s makes some money through affiliate links on our blog. So if you sign up for Zip Car through this link, we get a small cut of it. Making money via a podcast is possible too. Marc Maron makes $14,000 per episode of his WTF podcast. Does LMM make money? Not just yet. We bring in some money but it doesn’t yet cover expenses like me, hosting the site, hosting the podcast, equipment. You can make money but it takes time. Matt’s “day job” is Swim University. He’s had the site for four years, has been working on it full time for two years and has made $40,000 so far this year, mainly through affiliate links. The end goal for a podcast is to have companies sponsor you, to sell advertising on the podcast. If podcasting isn’t your thing, there are plenty of ways to make extra cash. 4. A listener has recently had to put a $3300 air conditioner on her credit card. Should she pay if off over time at 21% interest or use some cash in her Fidelity account to pay it off more quickly? There are a few ways to do this. Open a new credit card with limited time 0% interest and transfer the balance so you can pay it off over time without interest. If the money in the Fidelity account is your emergency fund, no AC in Georgia constitutes and emergency. If that would completely wipe out the emergency fund, look into Lending Tree to get a low interest rate loan. 5. What advice do you have for a freelancer in a physical job that can’t be done forever, who’s income varies month to month and needs to kick investing into high gear? Do what Matt calls the “freelance sprint.” Take on as many jobs as possible in a short amount of time to earn a lot of money quickly. The goal is to create a big cushion to see you through until the income is more steady. One way would be to have someone film you doing your job and put it on Youtube as a tutorial. A lot of people don’t know how to change the oil in their car or unclog their drain so there’s an audience out there and you make money from the ads on Youtube. Thanks for the questions everyone! Little tips can save you big at home. Get some money savings tips and find out if anything you’re doing now would cause Matt to punch you in the face. People love numbered lists and we found a good one giving tips on ways to save money on energy costs around the house. Most of the savings are small but can add up over time and many of the tips are pretty simple to accomplish. We picked out a few good ones for you. Your house doesn’t need to fill like the tropics in the winter or the Arctic in the summer. In the winter, set your thermostat at 68 during the day and 60 at night. For every degree it’s set below 70, you will save 3% of your heating bill. Put on an extra sweater, or if you have no pride or no shame, a Snuggy. In the summer, keep the temperature between 75-78. For every degree you raise the temperature, it will result in a 5% savings. Invest in a Nest, it’s a programmable thermostat that you can control via your phone. Turn your water heater down to 120 degrees. You don’t need to take a scalding hot shower. And it should be a shower, not a bath. A bath uses more water. Unless you like to indulge at the end of a long work day by soaking in a candle lit bath while catching up on the latest episode of Listen, Money Matters. Then you get a pass. This one is my favorite. Use a slow cooker. They are 75% more energy efficient than the oven or stove top. Don’t be put off by those nasty slow cooker dishes people used to bring to pot luck dinners in the 80’s. Slow cooking has come a long way. I use mine once a week and a can of cream of mushroom soup has never been involved. They also don’t heat up the kitchen in summer the way the oven does. As they burn out, replace your old light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights. The CFL’s cost more, but are more energy efficient and last up to ten times longer than old fashioned bulbs. If you have a swimming pool, it doesn’t have to be a money pit. Check out Matt’s site Swim University for ways to save money on your pool costs this summer including using a solar cover, running your pump after 9:00 pm, and using a robot pool cleaner. Spend a few hours around your home to improve it’s energy efficiency and you’ll save the environment and yourself a few dollars.
